When three prostitutes are found dead, all mutilated in the same way, Chief Inspector Jim Ashworth has to accept he has a serial killer on his patch. From the author of FLYING PIGS, JEOPARDY'S TALE and POETIC JUSTICE. Part of the CONSTABLE CRIME series.
The eighth book in this series is excellent. Such a shame though that at the end you don't find out what happened to the suspected villains. It's as if there were supposed to be more in the series but we will never find out as this book was published in 1998 which is when the author passed away.
A Slice of Murder is the eighth book in the Detective Jim Ashworth series by Brian Battison. It is a British Detective series that follows the investigations of Chief Inspector Jim Ashworth. With crime and investigation, mystery, suspense, interesting cases/scenarios, tension, intrigue, and a bit of a whodunnit feel. Another serial killer and a race against time to capture him before more victims turn up dead. Inspector Ainsworth is a bit of an ‘old-school’ detective, dedicated to his job, which involves many and varied investigations- from serial killers to pedophile rings, as well as dealing with gangsters, drug dealers, and even an extortionist. He is thrust into situations where he is in a race against time to uncover the truth, while personal dramas play out in the midst of it all. Happy Reading…
I worked out who the villain was the first time he came up in the book although I did have him pegged for something else at first. There were rather too many loose ends left behind in this story
Thus one got the 5 stars ! Was totally engrossed in this episode , you need to read all 8 in series to see why it was poss one of the best in the series !
A body is discovered in an ice covered lake, that of prostitute Julie Stevens, but she will not be the last. That coupled with problems on the local council estate keep DCI Jim Ashworth and the rest of the police station busy. An entertaining modern mystery. Originally published 1998
This is a typically fast paced story with plenty of suspense and tension from Battison -he doesn't waste a single word. The town seems to have grown in size since the earlier books, but that could be me, as I'm loathe to say anything derogatory about this finely written series of books. A great shame Battison died so young, some great characters in this series who I'd liked to have followed further.
I used to quite enjoy the books before Holly Bedford came on the scene. No Police woman would behave as she is written, well not in the police station I worked at...also have never witnessed policewomen in high heels!! The story seemed to be as much about Holly Bedford as the plot which I had worked out soon as Marks interest in her was announced. Ashworth appears to be mellowing as does the story line.

Being the only female detective on the force, Holly does her male counterparts well in tackling the murders in her patch the only way she knows how…with commitment, determination and grit. She is never again going to miss tell-tale signs of a insane, too-motivated paramour.
I enjoy the plots in this series and most of the characters apart from DSHolly Bedford, who is always causing problems for the rest of the team with her behavour. I don't think a police officer would behave the way she does and still be on the force.
