Learn how to strengthen your immune system, for life.
Our immune system is our body’s fortress — without it, we would be vulnerable to all sorts of infections and diseases. Yet misinformation about how to boost the immune system is everywhere. In Immune, Dr Servaas Bingé breaks through those myths, translating the latest scientific findings on immunity into clear advice with which you can optimise your lifestyle.
Using no-nonsense language with a touch of humour and lots of creative thinking, Bingé takes us on a fascinating journey through our immune system. He explains how we become ill and how best to protect against it, providing superb guidance for the most important thing you can do — stay healthy.
Over the last couple of years, I’ve been devouring books on pandemics, immunity and COVID-19. I think understanding the history and the science behind the scenes has helped me to work through why decisions have been made for the whole community. In Immune, Dr Servaas Bingé takes the now topical idea of immunity and applies it to the individual. What can a person do to boost their immunity? How does immunity work, not just in relation to COVID-19, but general health?
Immune is both highly enjoyable and interesting, making it very accessible and easy to read. It would suit someone who hasn’t had any formal learning on the topic. For health professionals, it’s a fun way of revising and gives an idea of how to phrase such complex topics to patients and families. For me, I really enjoyed the microbiology chapter. It’s was fun, and went through all the fundamentals in an easy to understand way. I wish I had this chapter when I was at university – it made things clear and interesting instead of dry and boring. Likewise, the immunology chapter goes into the cell types in a really fun, novel way. Picture them as trading cards (Pokémon or otherwise). Each cell type has a picture, followed by their speed of action, how good they are at killing invaders (e.g., bacteria, viruses) and their overall immunity power. It’s simple, effective and easy to compare cell types. The lifestyle and recipes chapters are very approachable and give an insight into how an individual can improve their sleep, stress levels and diet. There is even a quiz to see when you are most active – are you a morning person or a night owl? The final chapter is about COVID-19, which as we all know by now, has information that changes rapidly. However, this information is quite general and still useful (e.g., transmission, R numbers). It’s fairly short though, so this isn’t a book to read if you solely want to know more about COVID-19.
Overall, this is fun read that will get you motivated to consider how to improve your immunity as well as understand how it all works.
