Aspen Crossroads

Rate this book
To protect those most vulnerable, Haven Haviland must trust her heart--and her regrets--to a mysterious newcomer in this moving contemporary romance.

Few in the community of Whisper Canyon have actually met Jace Daring, a handsome recluse who lives at Aspen Crossroads, the farm at the edge of town. But that doesn't stop the rumors about the multiple women who live with him. He must protect the truth--that his farm-to-table restaurant will provide new livelihoods for women rescued from human trafficking--or he risks the safety and futures of those relying on him. But he can't do it alone.

Haven Haviland has always been everyone's safe place to fall until one mistake closes her counseling practice and leaves her open to the town's gossip. Trusting men has gotten her in trouble before. However, accepting Jace's job offer to mentor the rescued women seems like the perfect way to right her wrongs.

When the mayor's campaign to clean up Whisper Canyon targets Aspen Crossroads, the restaurant comes under fire, dangers from the women's pasts are awakened, and Haven's sins are exposed for all to see. Jace would sacrifice himself to save Haven and the women under his care, but his efforts might not be enough. And in the end, it might not be the women most in need of saving after all.

Jace Daring has come to Whispering Canyon to start up a farm-to-table restaurant employing women who’ve been rescued out of trafficking or other at-risk situations. The company behind this set-up is committed to helping women get on their feet financially while providing mental and emotional support as they work towards their goals. For this, Jace needs to find a counselor to work with the women, and even though he feels an inconvenient attraction to Haven, she fits the bill perfectly.

Haven Haviland shut down her counseling practice after a mistake that makes her question her judgement. So far, she’s had no luck finding other employment, until she sees the ad for Aspen Crossroads. Haven would love to help these women who’ve gone through so much, struck by all the hardships they’ve had to endure, but it’s no easy task. She also worries over her attraction to Jace hoping it won’t complicate her position.

Jace was reluctant to come to Whispering Canyon because his mother’s history in the town, and it’s a painful mystery to unravel for him. He was a sweetheart through and through and my heart broke for all that he and his mother went through. He was a bit unreasonably committed to moving onto the next job and leaving, but as this is a romance, I knew the situation would somehow work out.

Most of the folks in Whispering Canyon were supportive, but here were a few judgmental people, and I felt bad that Haven was tainted by her mother’s past behavior, but I was outraged even more by the self-righteous Mayor Trent Garrison! A true villain in this story, hellbent on making Haven miserable and running Jace out of town. I loved how Jace and Haven didn’t allow him to impact their lives in any real way, however, I eagerly awaited his comeuppance!

I don’t read Christian Romance for the most part, but I’ve read and enjoyed another story by Janine Rosche. I didn’t feel like the story was specific or preachy.

Aspen Crossroads
was a heartwarming story of two people overcoming adversity, reconciling the past and falling in love. I hope we get a story focused on Haven’s brother Daniel and Lizzie next.

What a stunning story! This novel was, at times, equal parts uplifting and heartbreaking, yet hope was woven through each chapter. Jace and Haven were scarred individuals working to help other scarred individuals, hoping to offer them a second chance at life.

The town was controlled by a very twisted man and for a while, it seemed to me that there would be no way to pull that control away from his grasp. It made me feel helpless as I read of the various threats and ways he worked to sully Haven’s name and also tried put a stop to the restaurant’s opening.

Jace and Haven’s developing connection and the romance that grew between them was the perfect amount of chemistry and angst. They had some things they needed to work through and there were some trying moments, for sure, but it was clear that they belonged together.

This novel dealt with the upsetting reality of the human trafficking market, with some of the characters having been forced into that world as children. The author handled the descriptions of the lives that these characters suffered through with grace, however, I was pleased that the author included a warning at the beginning of the story as a heads up for the reader.

You could imagine my squeal when I got my greedy little hands on Aspen Crossroads by Janine Rosche! And this book! You guys, it had everything I loved in a novel - great character development, sparky banter, heartwarming romance. And oh my classic-movie-loving soul, there were timely Audrey Hepburn references! Score!

This story also addressed some deeper issues not often touched in Christian fiction. I really admire this author's delicate approach and superb balance of heavy and light moments.

It's just such an amazing start to what's promised to be an awesome series!

I can't believe this is my first book by Janine Rosche!!! I've missed her debut series and a couple of Christmas stories...how did that happen?! (hanging my head in abject bibliophile shame.)

On a happier note -- I'm in on the start of her new Whisper Canyon series! And I'm in love with the way Rosche delivers a gritty, emotional read infused with hope. Puts me in mind of Varina Denman and T.I. Lowe. You know, the kind of hard-hitting, punch-in-the-gut, feel-your-way-to-the-end kind of compelling read. Punctuated with humour and toe-curling romance.

In fact, this book has one of the sweetest, electrifying meet-cutes I've ever read! It made me grin and swoon and commit myself wholeheartedly to Haven and Jace finding their way to a happily ever after.

But, oh, the drama! Complicated family histories make them wary and their small town harbors some truly narrow-minded individuals who make life miserable for them. Not to mention the slime-ball mayor who's all about serving himself, not his constituents. Classic politician run amok who raised my blood pressure to dangerous levels.

An emotionally charged, exhilarating rush of a read!

What a refreshing book! I'm a huge fan of Christian romance, and this one's just lovely. But beyond the chemistry and sweetness between Haven and Jace there are wonderful threads and truths that bring depth and lovely complexity to their story. Both have heart-wrenching backstories that have shaped who they are, how they view their world, and their responses to each attack on their character. And attacks there are in plenty. Whisper Canyon is both a lovely and horrible place depending on where the characters fit within it. And I loved how Ms. Rosche used both sides to point out spiritual truths that extend beyond Whisper Canyon and into the real world.

These quotes, for example, perfectly illustrate the points that resonated within me so much:
"But since the beginning, people have done a good job of bringing bad to what the Lord meant for good. Church is no exception, but then again, what is?"
"My savior didn't die on a cross so one man can tell another whether he's welcome to join the Lord's church. The church is full of sinners like us. We all need mercy. We all need grace."

From church hurt to trafficking to small-town life, Ms. Rosche has delivered a poignant love story packed with grace and truth that we can all benefit from hearing and taking to heart. Sensitive issues are sensitively handled without sugar coating, and with every laugh, tear, and small victory, my heart was completely engaged in the lives of these characters and cheering them on. I adored her Madison River books, but she's upped her game with the start of this new series.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher, I received an advance review copy of this book. However, my review is freely given without expectation or solicitation. I recommend this to any romance fans who enjoy a book that goes far deeper than a mere love story and unashamedly tackles hard issues with grace.

So, so good!! This is a story about redemption and grace, which are both portrayed so beautifully. Some of the characters struggle with trust and shame, and I loved reading about how they worked through and helped one another with these issues. I love the way Ms. Rosche points to Jesus throughout the story, and I love the way she included family relationships (including found family!). The issues tackled in here are serious, but they're well-balanced with moments that made me smile and there is also a very sweet romance. Haven and Jace grew in relationship as they worked together with survivors of sexual assault and trafficking.

Haven is a counselor who has recently had to shut her practice down. In looking for another job that uses her skills, she comes across an ad for a resident counselor for a group of people that have had a difficult life. She of course gets the job, and finds that the people under her care are a small group of women who have left trafficking situations. Her skills are really put to the test as she grapples with earning the trust of these women. Jace has opened a "group home" if you will. He, through the company he works for, has provided housing and job opportunities for these women. He meets Haven when she comes to work with the women, and this is the start of their slow-burn relationship. They both have baggage and have some things to work through, but theirs is a very sweet beginning and I'm looking forward to hearing more from them as the series progresses.

I truly loved every minute I spent reading this story and it really touched my heart. There is one specific quote that was extra special to me: "God can look after us no matter where we are. His eyes search the land for ways to help his people."

Haven Haviland signs on at Aspen Crossroads, after a misstep has her closing her counseling practice. There she meets Jace, a man shrouded in mystery and rumors. When the mayor of Whisper Canyon targets Aspen Crossroads in his goals to clean up the town, Jace and Haven must fight to save Aspen Crossroads.

Twisted family histories come to the surface as Jace and Haven work to make a Aspen Crossroads a success. Jace can be reclusive, but he is kind, with a heart for his work and farming. I loved the chemistry between them when they first met. And I liked how they came to trust and depend on each other as Haven becomes more and more comfortable in her new job. There is a full cast of characters, in their small town, and at Aspen, and it was fun getting to know the ladies.

There is definitely a lot going on with current concerns about the mayor trying to close the center and trying to get the restaurant going. A clean read with winsome characters, overcoming their pasts and standing up to injustice. A well written read!

Aspen Crossroads is written with Janine Rosche’s signature style of romance, beautiful scenery, and a story that will deepen your faith.

One of the things I loved about this book was the meet cute. It was so adorable and had me wondering how Haven and Jace would come together.

Another plus is Ms. Rosche doesn’t shy away from hard topics, but instead shows the power of God and how faith gets us through. Sometimes the topic was a bit heavy (human trafficking is a heavy topic) but it was one that provided a much needed view into the horrors.

All in all, Aspen Crossroads is another good read from Ms. Rosche.

Thank you in advance to the author, Janine Rosche, for providing a complimentary review copy of the book through JustRead Publicity Tours. A positive review was definitely not required or requested in any way; all words are my own.

This is my first introduction to the author’s writing; however, it certainly will not be the last. I am eagerly awaiting a return to Whisper Canyon. How could I not with the stunning cover and that beautiful couple holding hands to face what life deals them. Even reading the description on the back, I was drawn to the story like a moth to a flame. And, I knew what I was getting into.

Unlike some reviews where I warm up to the hard stuff – trigger and content warnings, this is one book where it needs to be done right off. Even the author addresses the content of the book right off.

While this is a beautiful, inspirational fiction/romance story; it deals with sensitive and traumatizing topics that might be difficult for some readers. These topics are:

🔹 Human Trafficking
🔹 Sex Trade
🔹 Sex Workers
🔹 Sexual Assault
🔹 Homelessness
🔹 Promiscuous Behavior
🔹 Infidelity
🔹 Childhood Sexual Assault

While there are not explicit details, even the characters’ backgrounds can be triggering for some readers. The author takes care to note that some victims’ experiences are far darker and grittier than depicted. And, as readers can see, there is a lot packed into this novel which is 335 pages worth of story.

Despite the “busy-ness” that this novel seems; Rosche is able to craft a beautiful, endearing, edgy, emotional, gripping, richly intense, realistic, and inspirational story that has some humor sprinkled in. There are also some TV references as well. One part that wasn’t funny, but was in one respect – when Daniel takes Haven to an interview. He doesn’t want to go inside as he doesn’t want to give a prospective serial killer 2-for-1 victims. Note: there is NO serial killer in this book.

The characters; are perfectly and deeply developed. The good ones became like family as I was reading this. The bad ones? Bad indeed. I also loved Rosche’s use of unusual names for the Haviland girls.

There are a lot of characters in this book –

🔹 Haven
🔹 Jace
🔹 Jillian
🔹 Rosalie
🔹 Sonny
🔹 Elijah (Sonny’s 3-year old son)
🔹 Mayor Trent Garrison
🔹 Bo Radford (nickname from Dukes of Hazzard – TV show given the time period)
🔹 Haviland Family – Daniel (Haven’s twin); Rarity (sister); Dash (sister); Valor (sister); Nina (deceased mother); Michael (father)
🔹 Garrison Family – Elaine (Trent’s wife); Samuel (Trent’s Father); Aiden (Trent’s Brother)
🔹 Horst Family – Reverend Horst, his wife, son Jimmy

Despite all the characters, this is told from Haven and Jace’s POV.

This was, for the most part, a quick read. Not because of the subject material. But, Rosche’s use of short chapters and engaging story-telling, moved the story forward and I had to keep reading to see what was going to happen next. It definitely had a rapid pace, but not so much that it feels rushed or hurried.

Rosche not only sets the background for the story, the town, but the characters. But, she does so in a way that it is relevant and doesn’t look like “fluff” or “filler”. Each background micro-story is carefully woven into the main story as a connection.

By the end of chapter 3, I HAD to know more. After a while I found this hard to put down as I was drawn in so much I felt like I was inside the book.

The Haviland kids, more specifically Haven, are constant sources of gossip given their mother’s past deeds. It’s clear she has hurt a lot of people with her promiscuity. At a farmer’s market Haven happens to see a poor little chick with a deformed foot. She names her “Audrey Hepburn”, but a nice man buys the little one and dubs her Audrey Henburn. That man? Jace Daring.

Jace has his own secrets when it comes to Whisper Canyon, a place he never wanted to return to after his mother’s death. Yet, it has been chosen for a farm-to-table restaurant that will help Jillian, Rosalie, and Sonny permanently leave behind the world they were rescued from – the sex trade.

While only the mayor knows the real story behind Aspen Crossroads, there are rumors of a polygamist cult or harem. And, it’s clear that no matter what is going on there – the mayor doesn’t want them there. In fact, he is quite blunt and honest about it.

Jillian, one of the “saved” girls, has a “thing” for Jace. That puts him in the uncomfortable spot of discouraging her. If he does, he is shaming her or rejecting her. And, it is clear there is no right way to do it.

And, it is his “need” that Haven helps fill – in-house behavioral counselor.

Given where the interview is, Haven’s twin brother takes her there. And, after a tense introduction – Jace tells Haven what the job entails. He warns her that an association with Aspen Crossroads will tarnish her reputation with the town.

Still, she takes the job. And, it is clear – the mayor is going to be trouble. He threatens her siblings and her father, and she decides to quit before starting. That is until Jace finds out and like the others – offers to keep her safe after he hears her own story.

Haven’s job at Aspen Crossroads isn’t easy. Rosalie sees her as a bestie, Sonny doesn’t need her, and Jillian sees her as competition (despite Jace not wanting anything to do with Jillian). And, Haven takes an interesting approach to get them to open up – she moves in.

Despite not wanting to get involved as he’s going to be moving on, Jace develops a special relationship with Haven.

The restaurant faces several hurdles and it clear to everyone that the mayor is behind it.

In between the restaurant and the relationship, Haven is also helping Jace discover his origins and his mother’s story there in Whisper Canyon. It is during a horse ride that he learns the truth – the name he knew his mother by wasn’t her name. And, then he learns of a connection to Aspen Crossroads.

That was a SHUT THE FRONT DOOR moment for sure. But, Rosche is nowhere near done with this story. I loved how she had a big reveal at the end of chapter 25 (page 195) then picks up in chapter 26 like there was nothing there. I wanted to ask “are we not going to discuss that”? No, she didn’t want to.

Haven and Jace meet up with Bo, who reveals where he got his nickname and why – the similarity between him and a character from Dukes of Hazzard (1979-1985). He knew and grew up with Jace’s mother.

It is Bo who gives them information that eventually leads Jace to his mother’s aunt who tells him the remaining information needed.

The community stands up and behind Jace and the girls after a rather unpleasant incident. But, they’re not the only ones “outed”.

I absolutely adored the ending with Audrey (the chicken). I thought it was actually adorable.

I have to give it to Rosche, this was one book that was packed with “one thing after another” but didn’t have a cluttered feel or that it was trying too hard to entertain. There were certain elements that took me by surprise and others I saw coming. Rosche gives just enough realism with the sex trade in establishing the characters’ history without overwhelming or pummeling the reader.

The only part I had issues with was Jillian’s attitude, and while not surprising, it was a bit annoying. Her character growth came at nearly the end. It was a surprising turn, yet in some ways, it could’ve been predicted. And, what she reveals is surprising.

I definitely related to Haven while she was waiting for Rosalie. I’ve read in a car while waiting (as recently as this January), but I had my coffee with me. I understood how Valor felt about mimes. I have a deep problem with them as well as clowns. And, with what Rosalie did with Skittles (one of each), I tend to do that with M&M’s. It was fun to see characters with those little traits.

I also loved the reference to The Smith’s song “How Soon is Now”. For those who don’t know, it was the theme to the series “Charmed” that ran from 1998-2006. I have fond memories of seasons 3-5, as well as a very special episode in season 7.

One thing that impressed me was Jace taking Garrison to task with regard to Garrison’s attitude towards the women that Aspen Crossroads was helping. Garrison stated that the people of Whisper Canyon wanted “virtuous, righteous, and pure” referring to the women as “prostitutes”. Jace’s response was spot on …

“If they are godly people, then they’d know that no one besides Christ is perfectly virtuous, righteous, or pure. If they own a bible, they’d understand that Christ didn’t mind eating or spending time with prostitutes”. This was referenced in the short-lived TV show – G.C.B.

That cannot be repeated enough. And, I love the author’s courage in expressing that sentiment which not many people espouse.

Despite the gritty reality of the sex trade, this is considered “inspirational romance”. There is mention of God, church and bible quotes. There are tones of forgiveness, grace, and second chances.

Fans of the author and those who enjoy a deep read, won’t want to miss this one! I’m ready for the second book in this series!

Janine Rosche is quickly becoming an auto buy author for me!

I loved this third instalment in her A Whisper Canyon Romance series. Not only for the sweet romances she portrays but also for the depth and variety of her characters. As well as the faith she interweaves in every story.

Jace and Haven were a great (probably will go down as a favorite couple dynamic of 2021) I loved their realistic feelings, reactions, and redemption story! Very well executed.

Plus, the setting is Colorado… I mean how can you go wrong with a romance set there?

Overall, Janine Rosche pulled me in, and I could not put this book down (my laundry does not thank her!) but I definitely do 😊 5 Stars.

This story packs a wallop in its pages for sure. First of all, this has one of the best meet cute scenes ever! It was adorable and definitely one of my favorite parts of the entire book. Jace and Haven are great characters and I really enjoyed their budding relationship. There are difficult elements to the story though, from the back stories of the girls Jace is trying to help, to the town villain and his evil schemes and in Jace's and Haven's histories as well. These made me so so sad. The end of the story is really good and has a happy ending which I really enjoyed. It's a beautiful story overall.

Christian Romance books are one of my absolute favorite genres to read. Add in a Western Theme and it is a MUST read. Aspen Crossroads by Janine Rosche fits into all those catergories, so I recently had the opportunity to read it.

Jace Daring is a recluse who lives on Aspen Crossroads, a farm at the edge of town of the Whisper Canyon Community. Rumors around town is that he has several women visiting his Farm to Table Restaurant. The truth is that he has a rescue community for Women rescued from Human Trafficking. He cannot reveal this truth to the Community or the lives of these women would be at risk. Haven Haviland had a successful Counseling Center in town, until a mistake forced her to shut down her services. Jace asks Haven to be mentor to the Women who are living at Aspen Crossroads. Haven feels that mentoring the women would bring comfort to all and it also might help bring her reputation back. The Mayor of Whisper Canyon wants to "clean up the town" and he targets Aspen Crossroads. It seems he is unaware of the "cause" behind the Farm to Table Restaurant. Jace is now in a fight to save the women he and Haven are helping. Will Jace deter the Mayor of Whisper Canyon and save the cause of the restaurant and ultimately the Women and Haven? Will Jace and Haven find that they work together so well, that a romance flourishes?

WOW!! I was truly engrossed in this storyline from the first Chapter and it is definitely a "can't put it down" book! The author does a WONDERFUL job at tackling a sensitive topic in a very eloquent way. Jace and Haven both are people who have always "worked for the Community" and I really like how they come together for this cause of helping women out of Sex Trafficking and Homelessness. The relationship that develops from them working closely with each other is just amazing. This book is one of Forgivness, Faith and helping others. I LOVE how they don't allow the town gossip to get them down. They rely on God to help them through the difficult times. GREAT BOOK!

"We can only choose to live each day with purpose and with grace."

Another fantastic book by Janine Rosche! The author is so good at weaving together broken, hurting, real characters into a beautiful tapestry of hope, forgiveness, and redemption. She will pull at your heartstrings and make you cry ugly tears and happy tears. The book does deal with some heavy topics like trafficking, abuse, and abandonment, but the author approaches them with care and thoughtfulness. Haven and Jace are so lovely - they are one of my favorite fictional couples of 2021. Both have had much tragedy in their past but their commitment to help others, their loyalty, compassion, and perseverance make them immensely lovable despite their mistakes and failures.

I can't wait for the next book in the series! I'm hoping the series will feature all of Haven's siblings. I received the book via JustRead Publicity Tours and was under no obligation to post a positive comment. All opinions are solely my own.

Author Janine Rosche has outdone herself with this first book in her new series. Aspen Crossroads has so many well-woven intricacies, I am certain multiple reading will bring more to the surface.

Haven and Jace are two hurting people in a sea of hurting people. From the moment these two met on the page (without knowing what they carried with them from their pasts), I was rooting for them. First there’s Haven with her large family and the rumors surrounding them. Jace was a little more of a mystery but once I uncovered that, fairly early in the book, my respect for the guy shot up.

Rosche’s characters range from sweet and friendly to gruff to downright sinister. There are two sides to the coin in Aspen Crossroads—those trying to help the less fortunate who are trying to turn their lives around and those who want exclusivity for the town. I learned early on who I disliked and didn’t trust.

I could go on and on about this book, but I don’t want to give any of the surprises awaiting new readers away. So many of the characters in Aspen Crossroads have experienced pain but are finding redemption and hope in this Colorado town. Rosche manages to balance on that fine line between awareness and compassion touching on difficult and dark topics. Bravo to the author for a beautifully written story that left me with a complete sense of satisfaction while ramping up the anticipation for what she’s going to bring to the page next.

What a surprise this book was to me.

I wasn't expecting such an emotional story. I love the story of redemption that runs through it all.

Jace and Haven will have you laughing, crying and frustrated - sometimes all in the same few page.

I love the strength of the ladies at Aspen Crossroads, and adore the way they move on from their pasts, especially given the crap that the town Mayor likes to throw their way..

Now, I didn't realise when I requested this book that it was a Christian romance, so all the religious stuff was a bit much for this athiest, but it didn't stop me reading and finishing the book like other books have done, so that it testament to the story

This powerful story reminds us that even in tough times, God has a plan for each of us. As this is a new series for Rosche, she has the chance to delve a little deeper into some of the more difficult things people face.

Haven Haviland is a woman who has always lived by the ethics she believes to be true--which has recently cost her the counseling practice that she's invested so much of herself in. Due to the rumors as to why her practice closed, life has been a struggle.

Jace Daring doesn't mind rumors. If he did, he'd never be able to help women escape the evil of human trafficking. He's passionate about the cause and ready to put his convictions into action. He's a protector, a provider for the undervalued. He is content to live on his farm on the outskirts of town, far from prying eyes.

Haven ends up targeted by someone who is not content with ruining her reputation--they want to pull Jace and his work into it, too. He can't allow this campaign to interfere with his commitment to women in crisis. He reaches out to Haven to see if she's willing to work with his clients to help them get much needed counseling. As things progress, a sweet romance begins to blossom. Can Haven clear their names and encourage the community to support Jace and his work? Or will this be yet another war she must fight?

This story of second chances, facing trauma and overcoming obstacles is definitely one that will stick with me for some time. There are difficult topics involved that could be hard for some to read, so keep that in mind. Rosche has a compassionate, endearing way of dealing with delicate topics, which is why her last series was so relatable. It appears as if the Whisper Canyon series will be just as lovely as the Madison River series!

"Aspen Crossroads" is a contemporary romance. Jace passionately cares about rescuing women from human trafficking. He works for organization that helps set these women up with new skills and jobs--in this case, a farm-to-table restaurant. But the women need counseling as well, which would be better from a professional and a woman. Haven closed her counseling practice in shame because she broke her professional standards when a client manipulated her when she was hurting emotionally and needed someone to talk to. Desperate for a new job, she takes on helping these women who have learned not to trust or be vulnerable to anyone. Making an already difficult job even harder, the mayor's determined to get rid of the ex-prostitutes even if it means underhanded dealing.

The main characters were complex, well-developed, and reacted realistically to events. Neither Haven or Jace felt like they deserved or could handle a loving, romantic relationship. However, they were attracted to the kindness and caring that the other showed toward the hurting. They built each other (and others) up and helped them to heal and hope for a better future. There was no sex or bad language. Overall, I'd recommend this intense novel.

I received an ebook review copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley.

I enjoyed this book to much!
This author has a way of sucking me in with complex characters and an interesting plot that has me eagerly reading as fast as I can to see how everything works out.
This book centered around a small town and people who were involved in helping survivors of sex trafficking. This book gave a tiny glimpse of some characters stories, but never too much or over detailed. Just enough to make it real, just enough to really make you think about what real people have to face.
The romance was so good! I loved the meet-cute I loved how they had to work together and I loved how they both had Shadows in their past that they needed to grow from.
It has some great kisses which is always a win for me.
The chemistry was spot on and the struggle tugged my heart.
Loved!
I do wish that I got to see a bit more of the hero's spiritual journey but it was good.
And this author once again has a villain that I just loved to despise!
And twist that I I didn't see coming!
And, and , and we get a look into some side characters that I can't wait for their story to be told!
Bravo!

Will the mistakes of your past haunt you forever? Haven Haviland has always lived up to her name, but now she's floundering after one misstep forced her to close her counseling practice. She's unsure what's next, especially as rumors fly about her character.

Jace Daring came back to Whisper Canyon, the one place his mother made him promise never to revisit. His job helping women get out of sex trafficking has led him here, where he is establishing a farm-to-table restaurant as a source of work and income for these ladies. Opposition meets him at every turn, as the mayor has made it clear he does not want this outreach staining the community image he is trying to build.

In attempting to help the least of these, Jace hires Haven to mentor the women under his care. He'll only be staying in Whisper Canyon long enough to establish the restaurant before he moves on to the next project. But Haven's sweet, wounded spirit makes him reconsider his hard and fast boundaries regarding relationships.

This is a lovely and touching novel from Janine Roche. Despite the heavy and sensitive subject matter, everything is handled in a beautifully moderate and grace-filled way. It's still real and heart-wrenching, but never gritty or gratuitous. You ache for the ways the sins of others have shaped the lives of our characters. Yet that ache is hardly the overall feeling of the story, for it leaves you with hope that these things can be overcome, that truth and love still win no matter the darkness encountered before.

Rosche has set up a lovely new series full of secondary characters I want to know more about. I can't wait to see what's coming up next for her!

Janine Rosche, a new author to me, writes about her characters with empathy, consideration and kindheartedness. Her talent and aptitude for addressing sensitive issues of great importance, seldom seen in Inspirational and Christian fiction, is a rare gift.

Due to a nefarious, lying character, Haven Haviland, who has lived in Whisper Canyon her entire life, becomes the target of a smear campaign. Jace Daring, who works for a company that rescues women from human trafficking and homelessness, becomes caught in the crosshairs of the smear campaign.

Aspen Crossroads highlights a bittersweet story with many aspects of the rescued women’s lives recounted, making it difficult to read. Your heart aches for the women. The story line is complex, cutting-edge and unconventional-reminiscent of Ginny Yttrup and Francine Rivers- difficult to read and challenging those who do.

**The details recounted may be triggering for those who have suffered abuse. **

Aspen Crossroads features faith and faithlessness, hope and despair, vision and shortsightedness, all tied up in a tale of deliverance and redemption. There is also a thread of a tender romance interwoven softly through the book.

I received this book from Penguin Random House through NetGalley. However, my review is voluntary, and all opinions are my own.

Aspen Crossroads
A Whisper Canyon Romance #1
By Janine Rosche

Haven Haviland made a mistake and now she's living with the consequences of it. Unfortunately, Whisper Canyon is not a forgiving place and due to the sins of her late mother, they aren't about to forgive or forget the rumors that are circulating. But Haven needs to find a job soon and the closer to home the better.

Jace Daring promised his late mother that he would never return to Whisper Canyon. But when the company he works for decides this small community is perfect for their newest project. There's just one problem - Mayor Trent Garrison.

Trent Garrison has a hold on Whisper Canyon that he isn't about to let go of. Worse he has the power as mayor to destroy any and all who get in his way and Aspen Crossroads is in his sights.

This is a book that deals with several sensitive/delicate issues that have a direct bearing on the characters, their past, their present, and their future. A few of the characters are victims of sex trafficking and are being offered a chance to reclaim the life they may have had if they had been given the chance. But second chances are not easy, especially when dealing with real people with their prejudices, fears, and preconceived notions. The various aspects are handled delicately offering the reader a chance to get to know the women behind the abuse as people.

Aspen Crossroads is a well-written book that will keep the reader's attention as you root for the success of the restaurant and its employees. I would recommend this book that was my introduction to the author and her work. There are no graphic scenes to give readers pause though the various characters do discuss their pasts in a limited fashion.

I was provided a complimentary copy of this book with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion. All thoughts expressed are my own.

Wow! A 'cannot put down' read. The complexity of the characters reels you in from the first page. Difficult topics are addressed in this book which includes redemption and grace. Haven and Jace both have secrets and reasons not to get involoved with each other. Yet, God has other plans for them. Working together to help women who are victims of sex trafficking brings them together through many difficult times. Weaving bits of humor throughout helps to lighten what may otherwise be a heavy read. Janine Rosche has, once again, woven a work worthy of recognition.

A good story about a difficult topic. I enjoyed the characters and look forward to meeting more of the residents of Aspen Crossroads and Whisper Canyon.

I'm going to give this book 3.5 stars. I like Janine Rosche's writing and the fact that she's not afraid of writing about heavy topics that most wouldn't pick. I really liked the unique characters.

I was absolutely gutted by this book...there are some brutal, beautiful moments, some parts that I had to stop the audio for and just take a moment to process and grieve, and some pretty lip gloss melting chemistry between Haven and Jace. The way these dark and light moments are balanced within the story really proves what an amazing writer Janine Rosche is. Jace & Haven's romance (from meet cute onward) was just lovely, and I cannot even wait to read the next Whisper Canyon installments (and I totally feel that Old 6 Toes knows who is up next) because I'm crazy in love with all of Haven's family. But what really made this book stand out was the sensitive way it deals with an extremely difficult topic that is often shied away from, especially in Christian fiction. Yet somehow, the author finds a way to honor and respect those who have been personally touched by trafficking. I listened on audiobook and the narrator really brought all of the characters to life. It was just a stunning story, and I'm so glad to have read it.

A nice start to her new series. It took me a while to warm up to the main characters but hanging in there was worth the effort. Not quite as enjoyable as the Madison River series but good enough that I'm looking forward to Book 2.

Haven has always been there for her family. Except for the times that she wasn't - then everything fell apart. But she is determined to stick it out in Whisper Canyon even though the town continues to gossip about her and her family.

Jace Daring promised his mother he would never come to Whisper Canyon, her hometown. But when his company decides to start their next farm-to-table restaurant in the community, he feels he has no choice but to go. This business venture is unique because it helps women who have escaped from trafficking to find new start. What happens when he comes up against a community that is not completely welcoming.

This book is definitely for an older audience - high school teens and up - because this book does talk about what happens when God's blueprint for sex (one man, one woman for life) is not followed. The consequences are not pretty. That being said, this book is doused with grace - God can give a fresh start no matter why we need one. Besides tackling trafficking, this book deals with rape and more. The author did not give very many details about the acts, but yet it could be triggers for certain readers. For me, it showed me how easily a person could be persuaded to give a way a part of themselves and also how easily a person could be trapped into trafficking.

The characters are definitely compelling. The parade part is definitely powerful. So is the realization that everyone is struggling. In God's eyes, we do not have to do anything to deserve a second chance. So why do we expect that of other people? I do agree with this statement. But I also think that sometimes because of the choices that we make (or are made for us), the consequences do not easily go away. Their was so much emphasis on understanding that maybe it could have been balanced a bit more with the need for restitution and recovery from mistakes.

The only part I was slightly confused about was how the rescued women knew how to run a restaurant already. There did not appear to be a time of training. But maybe they were picked to be a part of that business because they were already skilled. The farm-to-table part is mentioned, but that is definitely not the focus of the book.

This is the start of a new series for this author. She left several parts unfinished at the end, so I can guess at what stories are yet to come. I definitely plan on reading them all.

My final rating for this book: 4.8 I did receive a copy of this book as a part of a publicity campaign. I wanted to review the book. All opinions are my own.

Haven Haviland needs a job. A mistake on her part led to her closing her counseling practice in Whisper Canyon. Her strong ethics led to that decision. Unfortunately that mistake has led to rumors and gossip about her and has caused job opportunities to dry up. When Haven's sister Rarity gives her a lead for a job Haven very reluctantly checks it out. Haven's new job takes her to Aspen Crossroads where Jace Daring is working on opening a farm-to-table restaurant with women rescued from sex trafficking. Jace feels these women need counseling and advise. Not that these three women, Rosalie, Sonny and Jillian want any counseling or advice. Breaking through to them was going to be tough. Spending time with Jace Daring who Haven was attracted to and keeping their relationship strictly professional was going to be tough too.

Jace Daring works for the Secondly organization. This organization gives people who have suffered major life pitfalls like surviving sex trafficking or being forced to live on the streets opportunities to turn their lives around. Jace was a recipient of such an opportunity himself. Jace Daring had a really rough childhood living day to day homeless with his mother. He remembers spending time in homeless shelters. He remembers being freezing cold sleeping in their car with his mother - sometimes the only shelter they had. He remembers his mother's death when he was just fifteen years old and living on the streets. Quite the incentive to work for the Secondly organization. He can personally identify with the people he helps. His rough childhood contributes to his walled-off heart and lack of trust. All that changes when Jace meets Haven Haviland. Jace knows he needs to keep their relationship on a professional level. He sure doesn't want to though.

There are a number of tough themes addressed in this story. I applaud this author for bringing forward the hardships of those rescued from sex trafficking. The plight of single mothers on the run is also addressed. These are disturbing facts of life but this author covers them with honesty and grace. I really liked how these topics were handled and how Ms. Rosche still maintained an entertaining romance story. All in all I feel this storyline is entertaining yet instructional, the characters are well-developed and the conflict and resolution quite satisfying.

I received an ARC in exchange for a honest review.
