Blood-sucking mosquitos, dark tunnels, heart-pumping mountain roads (and the occasional run-in with police) are just some of the challenges a trio of friends encounter on their cross-Canada adventure. After completing high school, Aidan Garcia Sadler, Zachary Rohland, and Jeremy Mercado put into motion a plan that would test their mettle and their friendship. The three men-two on bicycles and the third providing support in an old Volkswagen Jetta-embark on a journey that takes them from Vancouver, British Columbia to Halifax, Nova Scotia.
This unique travel memoir unfolds in triplicate, with each friend sharing his first-person perspective on the day's trials and triumphs, covering a dizzying 6,000 kilometres in 47 days. It's a road trip like no other, fuelled by local fruit pies and greasy fast food, punctuated with hilarious "quote of the day" reminiscences, and head-scratching and heart-warming encounters with colourful characters along the way. More than simply an adventure or travel story, Out for a Rip is a thoughtful memoir that offers lessons learned about challenging yourself, the power of friendship and faith, and the kindness of strangers, while leaving readers to ponder the unsolved mystery of more than 100 banana peels.
Is there a 10 star option for this book! So many wild and crazy adventures were experienced across Canada by these adventure seeking guys. After reading the book I have questions. Maybe, I will buy some cans of Chef Boyardee Ravioli and have my favorite of the three authors over for dinner. If you are not sure if this book is for you, I suggest reading page 355 first (it’s not cheating) and I’m sure that will prompt you to cycle back to the starting line and begin the adventure.
As a student of the marketing arts, I was excited to read this ad for Chef Boyardee, Tim Horton’s, and McDonald’s. It was so fun how the authors threw in a few scenes about their bike ride as well! (But rest assured, it did not distract me from the main point!)
This book was very endearing and I had a swell time reading it! There were several times where I cracked a smile and even chuckled out loud. What an inspiring story of friendship and perseverance! I hope to never ride a bike that long!
*just quickly want to point out a discrepancy from day 19, in case the authors happen to be taking a break from writing their “where are they now” sequel to check goodreads. On Day 19, Aidan said they spent 4 hours stealing wifi in Tim Hortons, but Jeremy said 6 or 7. Just wondering what the truth is here. Thanks.
These guys put in a lot of hard work! 6 weeks of bike riding. I laughed, I cried, and enjoyed the ride! I’m glad I could go across Canada this way and not go on the ride myself.
Such a charming book about friendship & doing hard things. These sweet boys have such fun and interesting outlooks on their trip, and reading along felt like spending time with friends.
…but this is a grand spankin’ adventure that is told in triplicate, unlike any other book that I’ve ever read. Fresh and fun, it’s a family friendly romp of three amigos through the wild and wonderful beautiful Canadian lands.
I hope you read it, groan at the lame jokes, laugh at the weird and strange moments, and have a smile brought to your face through it all.
I hope that you’ll embark on your own fun adventure because of this read!
Such a fun book! You feel as though you are going on the adventure with them. I loved seeing each person's point of view of each day, it really made it feel so real. I loved everything about it! Great pictures as well!
