Serena Levaanton was the Alfurian princess of Goma, the city where the Alfurians lived in their towers enjoying security, the most innovative technology and peace whilst the humans lived in the city below, in the impoverished slums breathing polluted air and drinking polluted water and fighting in the arena to their deaths as gladiators, for the pleasure of their masters. The Alfurians kept the humans in this state of inequality through the imposition of the enforcers and their light batons, and the manus readers on every humans wrist. Serena dreamt that one day humans and Alfurians would enjoy equality and live in harmony. but the rest of the council disagreed. They saw humans as inferior and closer to animals so when the rioting started in the city below they decided it was time to cull the humans. However they were not aware of Rydian Holt, the human gladiator who had fought against Rotin aka Serena, in a fight to the death, but who had spared her life and for this he had been expelled without his manus reader thus exposed to the feared haze. Everyone thought that Rydian was dead however he had bonded with a leopard, and they had discovered that they could wield the light as they were light givers, whilst the Alturians were light takers thus dependant on the humans for their very survival. So our hero returns to Goma and a revolution is set in place but Rydian and his friends were to find out that there where worse monsters out there than the Alfurians and that they had just given them the gateway to come for all of them. Is this the end of Talamh? This 2nd book in the Alfurian Chronicles is so exciting that I had to keep on reading right through the night till the very last line was read. I am a sucker for a revolutionary tale and this one is so powerful and the twist at the end is very unexpected. I am so looking forward to book 3, I really cannot wait! This is a fantasy, sci-fi with a touch of magic series with strong heroic characters and many twists and turns to the story so that one does not know who to trust in the end and what is truth and what is lies!

A riveting book that takes you into unknown with the Alfurian's in charge and think humans are nothing except to get light from them. There was a Haze that made humans go mad but people had enough and started rioting and burning down things. A ragtag of people joined Rydian to change things and help people that believed the human factor should be allowed to live like real people instead of under the Alfurian's thumb. The ins and outs of this book are mind boggling as is the exciting ending. Another good book!

A must read sequel to Defiant! A perfect blend of SF and Fantasy! A tale that will keep you riveted from the first page to the end. A solid plot, exciting action, high tension, great characters, uneasy alliances, fast paced and gripping. With an amazing twist I did not see coming! I thoroughly enjoyed following Rydian and the others in this story. I was so immersed that I lost all track of time. This book is fantastic and I can't wait for the next one...

The mystery intensifies

I enjoyed reading this second instalment of the Alfurian Chronicles. Some questions from the previous book got answered but now things have become more entangled and complicated with knowledge of why the Alfur have enslaved the humans and who the real victim is. It is faced paced but easy to read. I am looking forward to the next book.
