My name is Ember Dixon. Ever since a magic rift swallowed my partner, Ash, I’ve hunted alone. The guilds call me a poacher, but I prefer to play it safe. I can’t trust anyone with my secret.

I’ll take any job that pays—even a suicide mission into uncharted wilderness swarming with dragons, deformed monsters, and wild magic.
My world gets turned upside down when I find out Ash is leading the hunt. Not only is he miraculously alive, but he’s returned with a terrifying new power, one that will change everything.

This time, if things go wrong, I have nowhere left to run.

Rift Walker is the exciting Ember & Ash series, a contemporary fantasy with a slow-burn romance that unfolds over several books. If you like self-reliant, butt-kicking heroines, dangerous magic, and fantasy adventure with just a dash of romance, you’ll love this new series from E.A. Copen.

Meet Ember and Ash friends from childhood in this kick ass fantasy read! It’s a fantastic action packed read full of danger, monsters, suspense, secrets and magic. Our female mc is strong and a total bad ass who hunts alone as she believes Ash is gone but surprise surprise he’s back and with a new power. The world building is incredible, the magic is dangerous, and the storyline gripping and exciting.

Rift Walker - a review by Rosemary Kenny

E.A.Copen's exciting new Ember and Ash series opener, Rift Walker, begins as Ember Dixon, a freelance bounty-hunter/poacher, joins her returned from the dead, longtime friend Ash's hunting party, for an elder dragon that disappeared into the Rift years before - at the same time as Ash, who'd been presumed dead for the last 5 years.

What secrets are Ember, Dex and hunt commander Ash hiding from everyone else - and one another?

An unofficial quest, with covert intent by its leader and a variety of magical, mythical creatures, vampires, a necromancer, a poacher, elves, gnomes, dragons and dwarves, plus magical portals/rifts, a half-elf hero (working for DEMO, to see what forbidden magic, etc has been committed), a magic brooch, an Elven sword, with a magical 'stag man' inside it and much more, makes EA Copen's beautifully-crafted tale of dungeons, dragons and derring-do, Rift Walker, sure to be one of the year's fantasy best sellers...get it today!

When I first started reading this book I wasn’t sure if I was going to like it and now that I’m done I don’t know if I’m going to read the next book in the series either. Ember is a monster Hunter that does freelance and is not attached to a monster hunting guild. She lost her friend Ash in a rift five years ago and thought she’d never see him again, but she was wrong. Since she does not belong to a guild she is also called a poacher. She escorted a caravan to a city and there she seen Ash again for the first time after five years. He was trying to assemble some hunters to kill a dragon. Ember was told the Dragon heart can cure illnesses such as the one that she is dying from. Unfortunately, during this adventure she finds out that ash is a very different person after he came out of the rift than he was when he went in. I believe Ember is also starting to be interested in one of the other hunters in this book. I am still not sure whether I’m going to read the next book in the series or not. This book was a little boring in the beginning.

Ember lost her friend Ash a few years ago and has been surviving in a fantastical, future version of the US ever since.

In a world torn apart and hosting dragons, elves, dwarves and others she exists as a poacher (freelancer) in a world filled with guilds to do the danger jobs of escorts through the wilderness, exterminator of Bad Things and more.

She has a bit of excess baggage she can't talk about to others.
Then she takes a new job - one with her lost friend and things change in ways she couldn't have expected.

The storyline is engrossing, the pace quick, and the characters are well-developed.

This is one fantasy world I'm glad not to live in. But I'm very happy to read about it!
It's a grand start to a series and I look forward to reading more.

The author has created a world that has the post-apocalyptic messiness and pain of Gail Z. Martin's Wasteland Marshals series set in a multicultural mileau that sounds a lot like Michelle Sagara's Elantra books. Our heroine would fit very well in the same sisterhood as Kate Daniels, Erin McLane, Jane Yellowrock and Mercy Thompson - up to and including the romantic challenges. What is it about these women that attracts such challenging men? Second-chance romances can be painful, but they are not supposed to be literally lethal. Okay, Ms. Copen, you have my attention. What happens next?

I received an ARC from the author and I am voluntarily leaving a review.

This story is complicated but simple at the same time. Complicated because of Ash. I wounder about him. I don't want to give away the ending so I will try to explain as best as I can. I don't know what Ash found inside the Rift and walking in the Black City. So is it a dead God or spirit of one who wanted to close the Rift long ago? I was surprised at the end by what the heretic call Ash, but it seemed fitting too.
Simple in Ember; she just wants to do the right thing and to survive. A good story. It caught me from the first sentence and just kept going. I enjoyed it. I received a complimentary review copy of the book and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

I knew this was going to be a fantasy type book but I didn’t realize it was going to be a post apocalyptic type book. That piqued my interest in this book even more.

I loved Ember from the first line. Her baggage makes her character relatable. All the characters were well written, but she’s definitely a favorite for me.

The story is fast paced and well written. I’m not really a fan of straight fantasy, but I am really enjoying the urban fantasies and this definitely fit the bill.

I’m glad this is going to be a series and I’m already looking forward to the next one!

I received a copy of this from the author in exchange for an honest review.

This is the story of Ember and Ash, childhood friends who meet up after 5 years when Ember thought Ash was lost and dead in a rift. Instead Ash is alive and heading a monster hunt. And thus begins a story with monsters, action, danger, and many secrets hidden my our cast of characters on the hunt for a dragon. It was easy and entertaining to read. Enjoyed the setup of a world in the future with magic, monsters, and the main character Ember. Was hooked from the beginning and found it hard to put down.

Really enjoyed Rift Walker. I was fortunate enough to win it through an Authors XP promotion and was only on the second page when the thought "Oh, oh! I'm in trouble" ran through my mind. I do NOT need another new author, but oops, here I am.

Rift Walker seemed like it should be just a fairly ordinary paranormal story, but boy, was I ever wrong.
So, so many twists and turns that I never saw coming.
Ember and Ash seemed like so many other "fated " couples, but....
If you enjoy paranormal stories that aren't just run of the mill, try this one!

I read probably about 90% of the book before I just could not do it anymore. The world is super interesting, the story intriguing, the heroine amazing, but I could not stand the "hero." He was a terrible person but I felt like we were supposed to at least like him a little. And this book is not a stand alone, so issues with the hero were not going to be resolved any time soon. I may revisit this book again when more are out and I can see where things go, but as for now, it was just one I did not want to spend any more of my time on.

This is one of those books that I wanted to fly through to see what happened next - but at the same time slow down and really take in the story. I became invested in Embers journey almost from the start. I love the world the author has created for the series and the writing allows the reader to easily visualize the story unfolding. Lots of action, suspense, twists & magic has me eagerily awaiting the next book!

Great world building, a wonderful main character, and plenty of action and twists make this book great. Add in a once close friend who has returned from the dead and has a huge secret of his own and you have a story that will keep you riveted until the end.

ok

This is an interesting new world. I liked Ember. I just struggled once we got past the initial set up I just didn’t like the characters so never invested in the story. The ending is very ambiguous too.

An amazing story full of danger, action, monsters and suspense. Once you start, you’re lost in the book. There’s no leaving until you get to the end.

KINDLE UNLIMITED

This was a very vague dystopian setting with magical rocks that turned people crazy. I won't be continuing the series.

Good

Five years ago, Ember was injured and Ash disappeared into a magical rift.
Now Ember lives with a ticking time bomb, and suddenly Ash is back, with a powerful magic he didn’t have before.
With a group of mercenaries, they head out on a dangerous quest.

This is an intense urban/post apocalyptic fantasy, set in a dark and dangerous world, filled with the kind of magic that can kill you.
And some of the characters are rather dark too.
Described as a slow burn romance, it’s worth noting that the romance is significantly lacking in this book; not that it makes the book bad, because it doesn’t!
It’s a fast paced, action packed fantasy, with an unfinished story, lining you up for subsequent books.
The characters are interesting, the world building well thought out, and the story itself gripping.
I will certainly be looking for the future additions to this series!

Recommended for those who enjoy urban fantasy/fantasy and post apocalyptic fiction.

What made this book so great for me was the characters. There are so many characters that you absolutely love or love to hate, but all are written so well that they deserve their own Spotlight. I want to learn more about Ike and The Necromancer. Can't believe who she still ended up siding with try, not to give it away but yes oh, can't believe it.

The world-building was absolutely amazing, you can kind of picture the geographical area and then the added Magic just turns it into something unique get something the reader can absolutely visualize. I am horrible at writing reviews but I thought this was a great book and being that not many people had read it, i thought I would get my best review. Hope I'm doing it justice but either way this was a really good read.

Post magic apocalypse in Atlanta

The hardest part reading this series is to remember that the Atlanta in this tale is completely different from Kate Daniels' Atlanta. This is very much character driven yet there are enough details that it feels like a true future world where rifts releasing magic have restructured society. This is a great start to a new world of magic much different from horror and darkness found in other E. A. Copen novels . Fans of Iliona Andrews, Patricia Briggs and anyone else that creates characters to love our hate with plenty of action and magic will enjoy this adventure.

Seriously though, I couldn't put it down. It's an interesting take on the fallout of magic taking over the world. The gritty world descriptions and the characters pulled me in right away and there was a good flow to the story. There's just enough background to give weight to the story's history without taking supplanting your imagination. I'm really looking forward to the next book in the series. I already pre-ordered it! :)

I don't give 5 star reviews often, because I read a lot of the same genre, and it's unusual to find a new take on it. For that, and because I just really love E.A.'s writing style - it's refreshing - I heartily endorse this book.

Rift Walker by E. A. Copen is Book 1 in the Ember & Ash series. The world building and story line are exceptional, a little different look at the end of the world. The characters are well developed and interesting. Ember is fighting for her life on a dial basis, Ash can be an ass and you want to kill him, and Dex is charming. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this action packed adventure and highly recommend it. Received an ARC and this is my voluntary review.

Every book gets better and better

This book is nothing like previous books by this author, and it’s incredible to see the growth. I really enjoyed this book, and the ending was not what I expected at all. I read it in one sitting- I couldn’t put it down. I’m anxious waiting for the rest of the series.
