Mae Martin is an award-winning Canadian comedian, writer and presenter of podcast GrownUp Land. In these two collected BBC Radio 4 series, she explores her generation's views on addiction and sexuality.
Mae Martin’s Guide to 21st Century Addiction Mae draws connections between her obsessive, all-consuming patterns of behaviour and examines why they might occur
Mae Martin’s Guide to 21st Century Sexuality Mae explores how millennials are transforming the way society thinks about sex and gender.
So funny. So relatable. And also oddly insightful for a comedian. The part about sexuality was particularly well done. What I love about comedy is it speaks to people in a relatable language that they can understand. Gender theory, and even doctors don’t do this enough. Hoping to be a little Mae Martin, and a little Leslie Feinberg and a little Sanjay Gupta when I speak about gender health.
It's a perfect book for people who are at the very beginning of educating themselves on LGBTQ+ topics. In a very casual way the book covers the basics like nature/nurture debate, labels, coming out and other themes with a lot of little funny anecdotes and stories from Mae's life. However, despite the entertaining delivery, the book doesn't loose the seriousness regarding the importance of some of the topics.
I was expecting more of a book but the audio version is basically their stand up. I adore Mae Martin but their stand up is repetitive and I've already heard everything they said in the book. They are still hilarious though
I am a huge Mae Martin fan, so this was a real treat to listen to. Not so much a book as a recording of a BBC radio show series they did a while back, but still relevant and hilarious. They shared great information and insights, especially about Gender in society.
I listen religiously to the Handsome Pod every week (Mae along with Fortune Feimster and Tig Notaro), and had heard several of these anecdotes already, but Mae’s delivery makes it feel fresh each time!
A delightful little listen. The voice Mae uses to impersonate their childhood self gets me every time. Also love the image of the giant shrimp in our heads we're trying to keep asleep as a metaphor for dopamine-seeking behavior of all kinds. I'm guessing it's not much new material for people already familiar with their stuff (I'm not, and even I'd heard a good chunk of it before from podcast appearances) so that may explain the low review count.
Mae is a doll! I listened to the audio version because I wanted the full Mae Martin experience. They did not disappoint. I laughed so hard and so many valid points were made. I love how genuine and honest they are.
This was essentially the same as Mae’s stand up shows, that being said she is always very funny and her jokes are top notch. She is both funny and relatable, and I appreciate that thoroughly.
Such a quick read/listen! Only 6 chapters is not enough. I found myself contemplating the nuances of gender yet howling with laughter at the same time. Mae strikes again. “Me liege” *bow*
I thought this was a book. It’s a radio broadcast, as far as I can tell. I heard Mae Martin interviewed on a podcast and downloaded this gem to my Audible account.
4 Star - Audiobook - Short 2hr compilation of Mae's podcast. Some great refreshing perspective and insight into some of her own life examples growing up. Did what it came to do as a quick snapshot. Would definitely read a memoir if she came out with one!

How did they mix the light and educational elements so well altogether?! It’s funny and inspiring, like shower thoughts you get from the bath time. I really relate to the broad definition of addiction, and I can clearly recognize that I also have this very addictive personality and obsessive tendency. Maybe it’s pure luck that my career is something I deeply love, so I get to use this obsessive tendency to my advantage. But in interpersonal relationships, more often than not, it causes trouble for myself and for others. I see it now, and I want to change that.
I listen to this program because of my current addiction to Mae Martin, and this program may have just cured my general addiction a little bit. It’s never too late to build new neural pathways, and my journey starts now.
