Port Willis Romance #3

Like a Silver Bell

Rate this book
Kara Elise Gentry’s trust in men is shattered...

...especially wealthy ones.

But after spending seven years as the wife of a powerful CEO—a praiseworthy man on the outside, but a monster behind closed doors—who can blame her?

Now, three years after finding the courage to leave him, Kara is trying to make a life for herself and her young daughter. She’s moving forward, working a job she loves at Boston-based New Dawn Women’s Council, the very non-profit that made her second chance possible.

That job lands her overseas in the quaint village of Port Willis just two weeks before Christmas. As the special events coordinator for New Dawn’s main office in Boston, Kara is overseeing the fundraiser that will help to finance and launch their London office.

And, like every good fundraiser should, this one includes a three-night stay at a historic English estate and a Winter Ball.

Kara has planned for every contingency—except Warren Kensington.

The handsome president of the charity’s board of directors seems like a good guy. Then again, so did Kara’s ex until they got married.

Still, there’s something about Warren that draws Kara to him. Can she let down her walls and trust again, or will they both return to Boston broken hearted this Christmas?

Lose yourself in the magic of this modern-day Austen-esque romance, where the friendships are sweet and the kisses are sweeter.

“What counts is what’s on the inside, that it’s what we do with what we’ve been given that matters most.”

Sigh. What a lovely Christmas novella set in lovely Port Willis. I always enjoy going back to this beautiful English town to catch up with old friends from previous stories and to soak up the spirit of the season. This return trip brings Warren and Kara together and we also get fun updates on all the other couples. Warren is such a sweetheart and a gentleman. Kara, though hounded by fear and insecurity, is a brave and self-sacrificing woman who is just trying to keep her head above water. I loved watching their friendship bloom and was cheering for Warren from the very beginning. If you love Christmas novellas, you will surely love this one. I received the book from the author and was under no obligation to post a positive comment. All opinions are solely my own.

This was such a heartwarming and comforting story about learning to find yourself and to trust again after experiencing physical abuse from the person who should love and protect you. I feel that the author did a great job of making Kara's emotional struggles and fear feel realistic.

This is the third book in the Novella series, but the fourth book set in Port Willis, and unfortunately the first I've read for my OCD with reading series in order. This one can be read as a standalone, but I will definitely go back and read the rest of the series soon.

I appreciated how the author took a difficult subject, one a lot of people have to deal with, and highlighted this struggle in this sensitive and warm Christmas theme story.

Take a trip to Cornwall this Christmas in the pages of Lindsay Harrel's Like a Silver Bell. Kara Gentry is slowly getting her life back—or what passes for her life after her divorce from her powerful husband three years ago. Being a single mom on a limited income isn't easy, but she won't touch Jeff's money. All of that goes straight to Rose's college fund. And Kara has no desire to get involved with a man again, especially not one with any kind of wealth to his name. She's seen where that lifestyle leads, and it's not for her.

One of the ways Kara finds redemption is in working for an organization that helps abused wives, and now her job is taking her to England for a December fundraiser. Running the huge weekend event is taking up all her energy, except for the part of her that worries about what Jeff might be telling Rose while she's out of the country. And the part that won't stop thinking about Warren Kensington.

Kara has known Warren for years, but she's never considered him in any special way until now. In close proximity as they both prepare for the fundraiser, she notices many new things about him. His wealth puts him squarely out of her self-imposed boundaries, though her emotions are not paying any attention.

But is the enchantment of being in a fancy place for a special time just that? Is Warren as good a guy as he seems?

This is a sweet story that perfectly captures the Christmas spirit and the heart of a battered woman. You cheer for Kara yet completely understand her wounds and hesitations. If you need a touch of romance balanced with depth, this is a Christmas story you should check out.

I received my copy of the book from the author. All thoughts in this opinion are my own.

A Sweet Christmas Romance

After meeting Kara in earlier books in this series, I am thrilled that she finally gets her own happily ever after. This story is charming and a quick and easy Christmas read. Kara is a fantastic character who has been through a lot and Warren is a perfect Prince Charming. Loved this one!

"My grandma used to say that lies lose their power when exposed to the light. I'm not a therapist, but I do think there's power in telling your story. And maybe some of that fear, that shame, that you still feel will lose its potency if you speak it out loud."

Kara Elise Gentry does not feel brave. But many others would think so. Three years ago she left her powerful husband who seemed like the perfect guy unless you lived with him. She is in the middle of a fresh start, but she is still finding her footing. Although she likes the idea of going to Port Willis, England, she does not like the fact that she has to leave behind her daughter with her father. Will she come to recognize how strong she really is?

I appreciate the fact that the heroine has to be tough. Walking away from an abusive relationship would be so hard. Reading about a second chance is inspiring as I think these survivors definitely deserve to be loved in a kind and caring way.

Kara and the other main character, Warren, are introduced in the 2nd Port Willis book, "Like a Christmas Dream." While you could read this book separately, I would read the whole series. I enjoy the English setting at Christmastime.

What I appreciate about Lindsay's stories is even though they always have an element of romance, that aspect is simply a part of the story rather than the focus. Relationships seem to develop naturally rather than being the main focus. Her books are about real life.

I did receive a complimentary copy of this book from the author. I would have read the book no mater what as I wanted to read it. All opinions are my own.

Set in the quaint Cornish village of Port Willis, this is another tale that comes alive with festiveness, charm, and sweet romance. The word pictures and dialogue were so sweet and truly helped to capture the flair of life in England.
Christmas is always a time of celebration and family, but this year Kara felt so alone. Being in another country away from her daughter and not really having any family just added to her sadness. Yet here she was, needing to bring the sparkle and joy of the holidays to a group of people she didn’t know and didn’t really like, just so they would help fund her very worthy program.
Life had been hard for Kara, and it all started when she was young. Now she just wants to build her life as best as she can for her and her daughter.
Lindsay Harrel has brought a warm tale of healing from the pains of someone struggling with being abused and dealing with very low self-esteem. The author brings in the love and support of friends and the deep love of God who takes our pains and heals them with His love.
When we can put ourselves in the characters’ lives and understand the pains and joys, that is what makes a book great! This author has done that!
I really enjoy reading books written by Lindsay Harrel. She brings such wonderful lessons to our hearts through her books.
I really enjoyed this book and liked how it got me in the holiday spirit. I highly recommend you pick this book up.
I was given this book by the publisher which did not influence my review in any way, all thoughts and opinions are my own.

I love returning to Port Willis in the author's Christmas novellas! "Like A Silver Bell" carries that characteristic feel of wonder, delight, and characters you fall in love with. Because my eyes were causing me some trouble and I couldn't read via electronics, I mostly listened to this one via the automated voice on kindle - I made sure to download a British voice so it felt more authentic, even if it was still very monotone XDI really liked Kara and her story. She has trouble trusting men - understandably so - and she went on such a journey in this sweet novella. I loved watching the plot progress, and more so, the relationships. Nothing felt too forced or cheesy, and it was just such a pleasant read while still carrying a depth I appreciated along with a good faith element. And the ending was awe-dorable. ^.^Another lovely novella!

Ahh ... another fantastic installment in the Port Willis Romance collection! I loved catching up with familiar faces, as well as reading new characters' story.

Kara's experiences with domestic abuse were heartrending; only a couple scenes went into much detail (for which I was thankful). Harrel does an admirable job at communicating gravitas without going overboard. And how she weaves hope, redemption, and encouragement throughout the book, especially given these tough situations, is fantastic!

I especially enjoyed the B&B scenes; there's something about winter in a cozy environment (especially involving holiday food/beverages, books, and Christmas décor) that I just love! (Three of my favorite highlighted quotes might be variations on that exact theme... )

The entire series is absolutely recommended, and perfect for this time of year. Also, for once in my life, I read them all in order ... :D and even though each can be read on its own, I appreciated reading in order and knowing all the characters' back stories!

I received an eARC of the book from the author. All opinions are my own.

This holiday novella is a spin off of Lindsay Harrel’s book Of Paper and Ink and the third of the Port Willis holiday series. It’s been a while since I’ve read any of these other books, so I was a little confused who was who at the beginning, but figured it out quickly enough to enjoy the story. For a short novel, LH handles the serious subject matter (domestic abuse) very realistically and respectfully, like she always does when handling deeper issues in her writing. The story was short and sweet, and very enjoyable, a perfect light read for the Christmas season.

Five Silver Bells! I’ve loved each installment in the Port Willis series and was so excited to find out there’d be a new one this year. Traveling to Port Willis is becoming a bit of a holiday tradition for me. My anxiousness over Rose spending an extended period of time with her dad was no doubt equal to Kara’s. But oh, to get lost in the season! The setting is always so magical and the characters flawed but lovable. There’s a Christmas Ball and a tree lighting!

Trigger Warning: domestic abuse
The author always handles this topic in a delicate way and without going into graphic detail. In this book, the abuse is in the past and the heroine is working through the repercussions. The abuse is not detailed.

This was a really sweet and uplifting story. Kara is a great character, with a tragic past who is doing her best to move forward with her life. Warren is a great match for Kara with his compassion and gentle nature. I appreciated how this book dealt with abuse, bringing awareness to the topic, without getting too graphic. I love the quaint town of Port Willis and enjoyed the updates we got on characters from the previous books in this series. This was a great Christmas read. I received an ARC, and this is my honest review.

WONDERFUL CHRISTMAS NOVELLA!

Lindsay Harrel has gifted readers with an early Christmas Gift in her wonderful new Christmas novella, Like A Silver Bell: A Sweet Romance (Port Willis Romance Book 3). Harrell uses the powerful story of Kara Elise Gentry’s victimization at the hand of her wealthy and powerful husband’s abuse as the background. Upon hearing of such an atrocity, another wealthy and powerful man, Warren Kensington, sets out to help women like Kara and do so anonymously. He has seen firsthand the effects what that type of abuse can do to a woman. When Kara and Warren find themselves forced to work together on the Fundraiser for the New Dawn’s Women’s Council, they began to see each other for who they really are instead of their preconceived notions. As the Fundraiser is close to beginning, the Keynote Speaker has to cancel leaving Dawn to fill in her place. Will Warren be horrified at all her weaknesses and turn against her like her ex? I highly recommend reading this novella so you can discover the amazing conclusion to this story!

This next installment in the Port Willis series can be read as a standalone, but is best read after the other stories in order to understand the characters and events.

Kara is heading to Port Willis, England to help coordinate the New Dawn charity fundraiser for abused women. She is leaving her little girl, Rose, with her ex-husband Jeff for Christmas because he insists on taking Rose on a cruise with his girlfriend. Though this is tough for Kara, she allows it because of Jeff's threats. When she arrives in England, Kara reunites with good friends, as well as Warren Kensington, the attractive and kind man who is on the board of New Dawn. As Kara falls for Warren, she struggles with her fears lingering from Jeff's abuse, and she will ultimately have to decide whether those fears will keep her from the good future God has for her.

I enjoyed this story just as much as the previous installments. Kara's story is heartbreaking and compelling. I was touched by her determination and care for others in spite of her own problems. The biblical truths about life, different types of relationships, and trusting God for His best encouraged and convicted me. The characters and setting came alive from the page through the detailed and realistic writing. I would gladly read more stories from Port Willis! I highly recommend this series, and I am looking forward to the author's next book.

Like a Silver Bell is a sweet Christmas story full of romance, second chances, and the power to overcome the past. Kara is probably my favorite heroine of this entire series, with such a past (relationship) to overcome. Harrel writes her character perfectly, reminding readers that certain situations in life can really leave you broken, but you don't have to stay broken. Sometimes there are people who can help pick up the pieces, little by little, and leave you breathless in the process.

Although a short read, it was packed full of goodness. The romance wasn't rushed at all, and Harrel really gave Kara the space she needed to grow and move on. And who wouldn't like the chance to be with hunky hero Warren? Warren felt straight from the Hallmark channel and I was definitely here for it :)

For those readers who want to get lost in a sweet, romantic Christmas story with a bit of depth to it, I highly recommend Like a Silver Bell. It's some of Harrel's best work! Like a Silver Bell is a sweet holiday tale that is guaranteed to warm your heart and curl your toes. Kara is set to travel to Port Willis for the holidays and is saddened to be traveling alone. Thankfully, she has friends there, which made for a fun reunion to revisit some previous characters. I love the setting and the work descriptions as she prepares for a big charity event. Part of the event is a one of her coworkers, Warren. Warren is kind, sweet, and wealthy. An automatic turn-off for Kara, but he quickly proves he is not like other wealthy men she has been exposed to. He is warm, patient, and gentle, and exactly what Kara needs to help draw her out of her shell. I love how their friendship quickly warms into more and Kara finally embraces the good gifts coming her way.

Like a Silver Bell is another delightful and charming story by Lindsay Harrel. Set in the village of Port Willis in Cornwall, it’s the third in the series, and I loved revisiting the town and the characters from Harrel’s other Christmas stories. This tale features Kara Gentry who has lost trust in men, especially wealthy ones, due to abuse in her former marriage. Warren Kensington, who is on the board of directors for the charity Kara works for, may just help her regain her trust. These characters had me immediately immersed in the story. They are both endearing and likeable. Warren is a fantastic hero who knows just what Kara needs to heal.

Lindsay Harrel pens delicious, heart-warming contemporary romances, and I love reading them. I always look forward to her books. I recommend her books to those who enjoy clean and wholesome books with heart and inspiration.

I really enjoyed my return visit to Port Willis since I've read the previous books in this romance series. It was fun to "catch up" with the women from the other books, though the main character was Kara. She had come through much difficulty in a previous marriage so wasn't quick to trust herself with a new relationship. I liked the way the other women, Sarah, Ginny, Sophia, and Joy, helped her by sharing not only their friendship but some of the obstacles they had faced. I especially liked this part of what Ginny said to Kara, "I could either take on the label of Failure or find my value in the fact that God loves me no matter what I do or don't do. He loves me simply because I'm his." Kara had always felt that she was on her own, that she didn't matter to God. Meeting Warren caused her to reevaluate what was really important. This Christmas romance novella has quite a bit of depth and I recommend it.

It was fun to return to Port Willis for Christmas. I thoroughly enjoyed the return of characters and the updates in their lives. If you aren’t familiar with these characters, it won’t matter because this romantic tale revolves around two people whose story is great. Personally, I just wanted a happy ending for them. But of course, there were real issues that needed to be addressed first. The romantic scenes involved some familiar Christmas activities with unique twists and conversations. I also loved the meaning behind the silver bell. The setting provides a gorgeous backdrop as this story unfolds and all I want is more! Hopefully Harrel will return there soon. A sweet, amazing short story perfect for a cold winter's night. It weaves the backstory throughout to paint the characters for the reader and leaves you with an ending to warm the heart. I really enjoyed this novella. It is written with such hope, the need we all have for love and second chances.
And in the midst of it all Kara learned how to trust God and hand over her fears to him led by a caring group of women who all have a story. I loved the character of Warren and how he led by example as he modelled love to Kara.

An amazing, heartwarming Christmas story.

New author that I will follow.

I have really enjoyed this series by Lindsay Harrell. She's a new author to me and I have not been disappointed. This series of books set at Christmas time dealt with real life issues... reconciling relationships and starting new ones, facing our fears and weaknesses, being who God created us to be, not allowing others expectations to do that. After her characteristics tried to go it alone on their own strength she made it clear that apart from a relationship with God life won't be ok no matter what. He is the only one with the answers. He is the only one who loves us like no one else can.

Oh I so enjoyed being back in Port Willis again! What a delightful Christmas novella. Lindsay Harrel has me convinced all these wonderful characters exist. I loved reading Kara & Warren's story. They beautifully navigated many of the issues they faced, Kara recovering from severe abuse from her ex-husband, and Warren working for his wealthy family business and yet wanting to do more. I highly recommend Like a Silver Bell by Lindsay Harrel!

Once again, I enjoyed a visit back to Port Willis to celebrate Christmas. Lindsay Harrel’s fictional town has all the elements necessary for a sweet December romance. This novella focuses on the story of Warren Kensington and Kara Gentry. Warren is a nice and very handsome guy. However, Kara is not interested in pursuing a relationship after her disastrous marriage. Kara must overcome Fear in order to take a risk. The character of Kara’s sweet daughter, Rose, is a great addition to the story. One of my favorite parts is the way in which the silver bell mentioned in the title fits into the story.

Harrel deals sensitively with the topic of domestic abuse in this novella. I felt like the reader was given the full idea of what Kara has suffered without including too many details.

If you have read The Secrets of Paper and Ink or any of the previous novellas, you will not want to miss this one. If you haven’t, you will still be able to enjoy this lovely story and then, you will be adding the others to your TBR list!

I have been waiting to read this third Port Willis novel since last year and it didn’t disappoint. I always wish I could travel to Port Willis and enjoy the little town for Christmas! I enjoyed reading about Kara’s story, as heartbreaking as it was and filled with joy when she found God and love again. I’m sad this series has come to an end, but I’m sure I’ll come to visit Port Willis and all the people again!

When Kara Gentry goes to Port Willis to oversee the fundraiser for New Dawn Women’s shelter, the last thing she wants to happen is fall in love. All she wants it to make a good life for her and her young daughter, but Warren Kensington just might help her let her guard down and prove to her that not all men are like her ex husband; charming outside the door, rude and abusive on the inside.

This is the first book in the Port Willis series that I have read and now I want to read the others. It’s a charmingly, cute story. The setting makes you want to visit and interact with the characters.
