Legion of Angels #10

Phoenix’s Refrain

Rate this book
There are forces greater than gods or demons at work here.

Leda Pandora, the Angel of Chaos, isn’t like other angels. She fights dirty, in ways totally unbecoming of a soldier in the Legion of Angels. She cracks jokes at the other angels, even when she should really keep her mouth shut. And she stubbornly insists on doing the right thing, even if it’s totally against the rules.

Leda’s chaotic ways have helped her win many battles, but she’s going to need more than a healthy dose of chaos this time. Powerful forces have their eyes trained on her unborn child, a magical miracle who might just become the most powerful weapon ever conceived.

To secure her daughter’s future, Leda will need to unravel schemes and unlock secrets buried deep in the past. Because ignorance is not bliss when deities play the game.

This one totally redeemed the last one in this series. I can't remember when was the last time that I've read through a book so fast. And now I'm actually feeling sorry that I did in fact read it so fast, because a good book is so hard to come by. Anyway, the author stays true to her writing style and the overall story plot. I feel like we got a lot of answers and new question in this one and now I am already looking forward to reading the next book in this series (that hopefully comes out soon).

Story getting drawn out now quality low

Hi all,

Sorry for the negative review. I waited over a year for this next installment.
Cons

1. I either matured alot in that year or this book is too childish or immature for me.

2.i understand that she is an angel of Choas however, the dialogue between her and other characters are that if a 10 year old. Shows no emotional depth or growth from book one. You can have chaotic people that doesn't have a mind if a child. It's very frustrating and off putting. Makes me feel that I'm reading a children's book.

3. There was too much repetition of the same discussion / argument that lasted for pages. They kept talking about what the guardian want or their motives for the entire book. Remember how I discussed about growth?

4. There was no plot growth. Nothing much happened. Earlier point. They kept talking about the others plans and then kept having flashbacks that had added nothing to the story but fill pages. Except the last flashback which in my opinion should have been done sooner and moved the story on.

5. Last chapter was crap. Just gonna be honest. The whole book was talking bout the guardian and their plans. The only fight scene at the end of the book where we all thought we were gonna get action....
I'm still waiting. The author must have ran out of steam or was too scared to put pen to paper

PROS

I can't wrote or negative points. There were good points as well even though they were few and far between.

1. I liked the flirting between Pandora and Nero
2. Loved the history of her parents and we got to see mainly her mothers story.

Areas for development.
1. More character growth is Pandora 24 years old make her more mature instead of childlike. She can be chaos without seeming like a person with less intelligence.
2. Show more plot, more pace of the story. Write more engaging fight scenes.

Will I read the next book? Maybe. But I think the author is drawing the story out at this point.
Either finish the series or just move along with the plot at an acceptable speed.

A whole year to have basically flashbacks and 1/3 of a fight at the end.

I don’t know if I simply lost interest or if the story is just not that good anymore.

The good

➤ The flirting between Leda and Nero. So much fun! I just needed MORE.
➤ If they weren’t the bad guys I would have said I’m down for an enemies-to-lovers kind of story between Grace and Faris. Their bickering actually made them kinda likable, or maybe I’m just really easy to manipulate lmao.
➤ Grace became super interesting to me after that ending.

The bad

➤ After 2 years, getting Zane back seemed ridiculously easy and convenient.
➤ What happened to Nero? He used to be such an integral part of the story. I think I got used to Leda and Nero as a team so much that now when they are apart it feels wrong to me. I miss those times when he trained her and they were together like 24/7. I get that they are an established couple now and that they don’t need to spend so much time together anymore to build their relationship but to me it seems like Nero just got pushed to the sideline. I mean, this is his story too, isn’t it…
➤ It’s commendable how Ella Summers came up with such complex story but tbh? I found it too much to handle, and there came a point where my brain simply couldn’t keep up anymore. And I mean, it WAS a lot. The plot in this jumped around so much, the guardians, Gaius Knight, Arina’s children, visions of Sierra, visions of some other angel, visions of h’s past, Angel Court, the pregnancies, Calamity, the angel slayer, Thea’s grimoire, Aradia, a phoenix, a djinn, a grandmother, a knight... I-😵‍💫😵‍💫
Everything seemed incredibly random and all the information dump and new (and old) characters overwhelmed me so much that it was impossible for me to figure out how everything related to each other. All of it just left me incredibly confused and bored the whole time.

***

↳ I'm sad to say that this is where my journey with Leda and Nero ends BUT I can say with certainty that this will not be my last book by Ella Summers.

A fiery read!

There are forces greater than gods or demons at work here...

We finally got answers - a lot more than I could have bargained for and I'm so extremely happy about it.

I waited months and months for this book and the waiting was absolutely worth the wait and patience.

My love for this series, these characters have grown to cosmic levels. I know it will never fade just as much as I know I will be vey sad when it's over.

Full of gods, demons, powers, action, deception, adventure, angels, secrecy, demigods, surprises, truths, danger, manipulation, trust and love.

Perfect for readers of paranormal romance/urban fantasy.

For me this whole series is a 5 star series.

I head a lot of good thing about this book. The series was recommended to me many times (#cakeeaters thank you). I never picked it up, because I was scared that I won't like a well loved series. But I finally did, because I put it in a clear your tbr challenge and it was called.

I started the first book Vampire's legion last sunday, when the number was drawn and I only stoped once to finish another challenge but otherwise I read the whole series in only seven days! I really binged it.

I loved Leda and her lovely chaotic ways. She really got things done, even if the Angels thought that her ways were inappropriate. But she always thought out of the box and her actions lead to results.
Nero is a good counterpart. He gives her stability, rules and has her back. But he also knows how to bend the rules properly. Which leads to creative rule bending Leda styled.

The series was so much fun. I rarely read a series that long, where I wanted to have the next book like yesterday. The audiobooks are good too. I like the narrator. Most of the time I read and listened to the series changing from ebook to audiobook and back.

#10 is the last book at the moment but there are more to come!

Five stars recommendation!

Heads up: I'll just copy this review into all the other books of the series. Also most of the audiobooks (one to eight) were free on audible at the end of 2023. For the first four book there is one audiobook available, but it's not free on audible.

It felt like it moved the story on a very small amount and used a lot of flashbacks as filler, rather than anything really to drive the story on much more.

Unlike earlier books, this seemed to be more about sitting around and repeating the things someone else had already said earlier in the book.

I felt disappointed somewhat with this book and looking back at my review of the previous book, I am noticing more of a trend of padding stuff out to make the series hit a set book length.

This was good fun. Chaotic and a bit ic fusing, but still fun.

The trouble with really long standing series, with a year or so between releases, is that I can be really hard to recall the details of what has happened previously beyond the main character and main plot. I spent a good bit of the book teying to remember who various characters were and their significance and the nuances of previous story lines.

However, what is the draw of this series is Leda, who continues to be hilarious and living up to her Angel of Chaos moniker, and her relationship with Nero. I really love those two together.

Long standing fans of the series will enjoy this, I'm sure. There was lots of answers to previous questions and lots of story still to be 5old,woth so many options for spin offs!

So a lot happened in this and unfortunately, it was not my favorite. It was too long since I read the last one I wasn't as invested but the story is coming along real good. Things are starting to make sense but idk I guess I am just in a mood.

This is the tenth book in the series, and I am so glad to be back in Leda’s world; I’ve really missed her and Nero. In this latest, Leda is fighting to keep her unborn daughter safe from everyone who wants to use her extremely rare and strong powers. There are so many secrets, babies, shenanigans, plots, and different enemies that it made my head spin. Just when I thought events were going one way, the author threw in a curve that I didn’t know which way was up. This was a pivotal book in the series, and I am excited to see just what going to happen next in this universe…especially with the addition of the new characters. Recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.

I used to LOVE this series but the last few books have been terrible. Leda just isn’t mature enough for any of the happenings in these books. She doesn’t care about her actions at all she just keeps talking about how she’s different. I’m sick of reading how she isn’t like other angels in every single sentence. This will, unfortunately, be the last book I read of this once loved series.

A very spectacular and satisfying read...

-- Five stars, which almost seems mediocre for such a fabulous wrap up that tied together all the loose ends, frustrating puzzles, and annoying threats plaguing Leda, Nero, and close family and friends.
-- Awesome plot threads and clever details engage, fuel, and keep readers captivated.
-- Intriguing characters from all the immortal, powerful forces that Leda managed to bring together to fight for a common, rightful outcome. The Legion of Angels, the Demon Realm's Dark Forces, Heaven's forces and Council of God's (probably just butchered exact titles of the different major armies of the gods and demons) only united due to Leda's dogged persistence and fierce commitment to always do the right thing.
-- Strong themes of honor, loyalty, friendship, responsibility: and at its center, Leda shines, glows, as the Angel of Chaos who overcame the impossible, bringing everyone together with the power of her stubbornness, fierce need to protect the innocent, and love. Her humor gives brief pulses of laughter throughout.
-- This was simply an amazing series despite a couple of disappointing sections (Leda without Nero in any books' majority made them less than appealing.
-- Entertaining, exciting, intriguing, humorous - especially with her new companion, a "cat" she names Angel.

Unfortunately not for me.

I found the previous book in this series a bit hard to get through, but I thought I’d give this series one more go since I really enjoyed the earlier books. Unfortunately this book was similar to the last one - I found it a bit of a chore to get through. There were so many different characters, so much rehashing of the past, convoluted conversations and storylines, and I just found it a bit tedious to be honest.
There was no romance, basically the h&H would give each other horny eyes and then remember that pregnant angels apparently aren’t allowed to have sex.
There was barely any humour, asides from the heroine getting snarky, and I just wasn’t finding that entertaining either.
All that to say, I don’t know if I will bother reading the end of this series. It’s lost it’s spark for me.

Another Great Book

This story really helped to bring a lot of the open questions together. It wasn’t as action packed as some of the others, but it really delved into the past of the characters and makes a lot of things make sense. Leda and Nero are two of my favorite couples and they do not disappoint. I love how they have grown together and the easy banter between them. The other characters, such as Leda and Nero's parents, also have a big presence in this book. We find out more about how Leda came to be with her foster family and there are more secrets revealed. It also opens up for a ton of new possibilities going forward. At the end, while there is some closure of sorts, we know that there is more to come. I can't wait to find out what that more is and how Leda and Nero handle it. There are lots of suprises and plot twists in the book. The writing, as always, is engaging and at times makes you laugh. I can’t wait to see where the next book takes us!

Decent read

I love and have reread this series multiple times already. But this book isn’t my favorite for sure. Something about it just threw me off, the way it was written felt disjointed and just didn’t flow and capture me like the other books. We learned a lot of useful info and got so many questions answered but how they got some answers just seemed a little too convenient and unbelievable tbh. I am still eagerly awaiting the next book!!!

Okay

I enjoyed this book for the most part. Overall, it is one of my favorite series. This book, however, was a little weird for me. For one, I was surprised by the amount of errors. They weren’t too hard to overlook though. What really surprised me, the flow of the story wasn’t there for a good part of the book. Sometimes I was wondering if it was the same author. And Leda, quite often she seemed way immature and stupid acting. I realize to an extent, that’s her jam, but it seemed over the top at times. There were times it was annoying to read. And she is a favorite character, so wasn’t happy about that. Did enjoy the story though. Learned a lot for sure. Still looking forward to the next.

Leda “Pandora” is now pregnant after some serious manipulation on the part of her birth mother. Leda is a bada$$ that takes no crap and gives sass to everyone no matter who you are (or think you are). With both dark and light she may be their world’s savior or the destruction. Her father god leader and her mother demon, someone is always manipulating her. However, their daughter may be the most powerful of them all. During this book she ends up being forced to take remedial classes because she has no decorum, which only bites them in the ass as she learns the history of the angels and gods. With her pregnancy being a miracle, they try to keep her from any danger, even if it’s her own making. Leda has more nicknames thrown her way in this book from the fellow angels and gods. All very suitable for her such as the Angel of Chaos, Trickery, Mayhem...each one fits her and her way of life. She grew up with great morals for such a hard knock life, she believed you should always achieve to do right. She also does not mind teaching those that do wrong (including the fellow angels and gods) what she thinks of that, even if it is fighting dirty. She may be edging out some of my other favorite FMC’s. Nero, her sexy, wicked ruler, follower husband has slowly started to believe in her ways more than the rules of the gods. During this series at sometime or another every angel or god she has faced off with has had to learn what it means to deal with her Chaos. Leda ends up not being the only angel pregnant and forced to the sidelines. This book we also learn that her foster mother and siblings have all been put together through manipulation of the higher powers. It ends like always with an open-ended “what's to come?” theme. I can always count on this series to offer humor, banter, at some point I will be crying, and while it does have mild spice it’s more fade-to-black. 4.5/stars

So it had been a while since I read the previous books in the series so I had forgotten quite a bit of what had happened in this series - but I did remember most of Leda and Nero's romance.

This starts with Leda and two of her sisters going into the Lost City, trying to find who has been sending her visions of the past and ends up running into someone she knows very well. Being pregnant Leda is told that she can't be on active duty so Nyx tasks her with making the Legion of Angels more accessible to the humans so she decides to hold an angel court in which she and others will settle disputes between people and other things. Only she meets someone who makes her begin to question what happened when she was born.

This one was crazy - or it felt like it anyway. There seemed to be at a lot going on and yet not much seemed to happen at the same time. There were a lot of memory scenes showing Leda's history and how she came to be where she is. It was a bit of a conundrum at times because the more you read of her history, the more you realised someone else was always pulling someone else's strings.

It actually got a bit too much for me towards the end and I skipped the ending of the memory. I wasn't particularly interested in how Leda was born for a reason and that her child would also be born for a reason.

The main part of the book, in my opinion, was them unearthing the Guardian stronghold and it took all of about a page or two towards the end of the book. I'm a bit disappointed by this instalment in the series.

There are a few editing issues in this - the same paragraphs are repeated one after another - and the tense in places is wrong.

I'm debating whether to continue the series or not after this one.

Can't believe I'm giving a 3-star rating for this book since this is one of my favorite series but it just left me feeling unsatisfied and disappointed. I waited for this book for many months and it did not just end with a high note for me. Firstly, not a lot of action involving Leda which I kind of get because she was pregnant but I miss my badass angel. Not a lot romance on this one. Nero was absent most of the time and he felt like a side character in this book. Maybe that is because there are a lot of characters in this book. Like. A. Lot. Questions are raised and answered in way that left me unsatisfied. A lot of loose ends was tied up but the answer was not what I was looking for and expecting. A lot of magical characters and concepts are introduced in this one which are made as plot devices to answer the questions we have from the past books which made it a bit messy for my liking. I was also disappointed with how the Guardians was handled. They are supposed to be wicked and evil but I did not feel it because there is no face or names to them. Never felt that they are concrete characters in the story and just not scary to me. A lot of explanations and revelations that should be big and impactful were revealed but it did not achieve its purpose. There is also a lot manipulating going on that I thought we're past that since it was done so many times before in this series. There is also no climax for me. The pace of the story is rushed but at the same time monotone in its writing. All in all, it is a disappointing book for me. Hope the next one will be better.

So, I have been looking forward to this book since I started reading this series, and god did I wait for its release.
But honestly the book did not live up to my expectations and neither did the author. Here I was wishing that she would make the female lead look stubborn, smart and with personality that said “I own my mistakes, when I make them”, but instead the female lead and many other interesting characters took a back-burner in this one, and to say I was disappointed would be an understatement.

The plot was not very well constructed, as one would have hoped based on the pervious books. But, having said that I still look forward to reading the next book in the series wishing it would pick-up the story and make it more interesting, and even if not (god forbid that does not happen) I will still read the whole series as I don’t like to keep it hanging and not know how the story ended.

But having said all above the above, I still think this book is worth one read as you wont understand the story in the further books if you don’t read this one.
Here’s to hoping a new book with a kick-ass story and a strong and intelligent female character lead.

Heather's Notes
I waited a while to read this one, because the series is getting a little boring. Unfortunately this book didn't really help with that. The entire book is basically them running around and getting information (maybe a set up for future books??). Nothing really happened until the end. I am also not real happy with the direction the series is taking, still I will probably read the next book as well.

Choppy and just too much

This book read so differently than previous ones. There is a lot going on, but so much comes out of nowhere with no attention to character development or plot holes (beyond throwing a ton of encyclopedia-type info/history at the reader). Then there's the plot development. How Calli found Leda and her siblings, the different forms of magic, hidden papers, visions galore, getting humans to join the legion, an airship, ninjas, babies, convincing humans that joining the legion is a good thing... and don't even get me started on the pregnancies without consent and how women are expected to sit back and breed, no questions asked. Up until book 10, Leda was a kick-ass character who was learning how to lead. But in this outing, she felt juvenile and only partially fleshed out. And the mishmash of other characters felt like the worst alphabet soup ever. This book was a huge departure, and I think I am done with the series.

This was a good book, but there were a few things I was a little conflicted about.

Mainly how much is done to them without their consent.
We did get a lot of answers in this book, but there was ...a lot to take in, and it did feel that this seemed to take up majority of the book.

I'm not sure how many books were intended for this series, but I don't think there can be too many more. It's a shame there's been no update on the next book, and whether there will actually been more as seems to have been a long time since the last book was out or since any updates on the author's website.

Leda isn't much smarter
in this book. In the beginning, Gin is killed after opening up the doorway to the hidden room. Leda is all hysterical that's she's dead, refusing to go through the rapidly closing doorway Gin worked long and hard to open. She knows Gin's a Phoenix and will come back to life shortly. When Faris reminds her she's not really dead, and if they don't go through with their mission now, they'd have to wait a month and do this all over again she still refuses to go through and calls him heartless. Tessa finally convinces her but if I was Gin, when I came back to life (painfully) learning that I'd picked the difficult lock and died temporarily for no reason, because my dumbass sister was irrationally sad I'd been killed, knowing I'd come back to life and then have to go back and pick the damn lock again in another month, I'd be seriously pissed. I'm choosing to believe Leda's not really that dumb and it's just baby hormones .

Another book that Ella Summers absolutely nailed! Amazing as always. Her books are one of my favorites and she has built up such a unique world.

After the revealing of a big surprise in the last book, this book starts off with Leda being on a differently kind of mission, the goal is to get answers about the visions she’s seen in her dreams. Nero and Leda are taking steps to securing their futures and protecting everyone they love.

A lot of information comes to light, about who the person is, that’s really behind everything, who is the person Leda sees and their best way to succeed yet another impossible task.

Super excited for the next installment of Leda and Neros adventures and I’m really hoping that Ella Summers will continue writing in this unique world she’s built up since this is one of my favorite series.

Leda and Nero’s child is on the way, and targeted by not only by Leda’s parents, Grace and Faris for a weapon, but also the Guardians who have been kidnapping supernaturals to use for power. In this book we learn more about the past lives of Grace and her sisters, and of Tessa, Gin and Zane, Leda’s family and how they all became the adoptive children of Callie. This world is so intricate and well thought out down to the last detail that you may want to read this book (or parts of it) twice to get to all the details. The plot comes together nicely and even though the main arc in the story is ongoing, the books will not leave the reader on a cliffhanger.

Leda and Nero are stronger than ever, and the secondary characters are back in force. The humor adds levity and the action sequences had me on the edge of my seat. Highly recommended series.
