I started reading Samaya’s Summer not knowing quite what to expect, but was pleasantly surprised by how much I looked forward to getting back to it after a long day. A well-written and easy read with likeable characters and a dash of fantasy. Simultaneously riveting yet wholesome, it’s easy to get invested in the escapades of the main trio, and will leave you wanting to dive straight into book 2. I enjoyed it and would absolutely continue reading the rest of the series.
Samaya's summer is a colorful story of a young woman going through teenage stuff. She's unsure of herself, socially awkward and filled with angst. It's about friendship with a touch of supernatural. The characters are rich and authentic and the story was near impossible to put down. This book is the summary of everything I love about young adult reads. Excellent story!
Samaya Lewis is a spot-on portrayal of moody teenage contradictions: stubborn yet insecure, opinionated yet shy. Torn between pleasing her high-achieving parents and chasing her dream to play basketball, she is an intelligent yet reluctant heroine prone to taking flight when her anxiety skyrockets in social situations.
The rich tapestry of American small town life is depicted in exquisite detail. From gossiping beauty salon clients to churchgoers dressed in their Sunday best - the residents of Willow Ridge come to life on the page. In contrast the supernatural elements seem cryptic and hazy, the menace ill-defined. Looking forward to this being fleshed out in later volumes.
A promising first volume that works well as a standalone coming-of-age story. A rewarding and uplifting read.
Shameless author review here. I don't give five-star reviews, but I do honestly enjoy reading this story.
Samaya’s Summer is the debut novel in The Genesis Chronicles series following the adventures of Samaya Lewis, Whitney Stone, and Chloe James.
Samaya is a 14-year-old basketball player from the city who is forced to spend her entire summer with her aunt in the sleepy southern town of Willow Ridge after breaking one too many rules.
At first, Samaya attempts to comply with her rehabilitation/punishment. However, everything changes when Samaya makes two new friends, and they discover an ancient book urging them to accept a magical mission. Torn between turning over a new leaf and embarking on a quest for power with her new friends, Samaya refuses to answer the call of adventure.
But as the summer continues, a suspicious newcomer makes waves in Willow Ridge’s placid social scene. Cornelius Murdoch, a businessman with a hidden agenda, stirs the pot in a sinister way and eventually becomes a threat too dangerous for Samaya to ignore.
Who is Cornelius Murdoch? Does Samaya join her friends on their mission, or does she return home to her beloved basketball? And what does any of this have to do with a magic book? You’ll have to read Samaya’s Summer to find out.
