Over the years, Connor has pieced together evidence of a mysterious group of aliens who roamed the multiverse and have been to New Earth.
Setting off to make new discoveries about them is straightforward enough, but this is New Earth, and Connor Gates has a knack for finding trouble.
For over twenty years, Connor and Diaz have been friends. They’ve survived two wars and have seen the best and the worst of each other. When a terrorist attack takes the life of Diaz’s son, their friendship will be pushed to the breaking point.
To find who is responsible, Diaz is willing to cross as many lines as it takes. Connor will do everything he can to protect his friend, even from himself. It’ll take everything he’s got to find who is responsible while preserving a peaceful coexistence with New Earth’s inhabitants.
Sometimes protecting your friends is a lot tougher than fighting your enemies.

This is the second book in this series that I've read very recently. It seems I was just catching up to the series with book 11, "Invasion", seeming to be the last book in the series, but here we are with another book. I definitely think this is the final book in this series. That's OK with me because, honestly, I think the story had gone on long enough. Now we're reading about the children that were just born or about to be born when the series started. I think that's far enough down the development of the First Colony.
It seems as if the author had to come up with something different on the planet New Earth to have give this a story-line. General Connor Gates and his wife, Lenora, are both explorers with her being an archeologist seeming to always want to hunt down the past of the Ovarrow and New Earth. Since the Krake were defeated in the last book, General Gates doesn't have much to do since the CDF can function quite well without him during peacetime at least. So, his wife wants to go exploring some distant potential sites in hopes of finding out more about how the Ovarrow came to New Earth and find more technology left by the Krake. Yes, the Krake were once on New Earth in control of the Ovarrow. Why they left is not know, but it is known that a lot of their advanced tech was left behind. So, Connor and Lenora put together this huge expedition and start dragging their friends along.
Noah Baker and his wife Kara are in a (orbiting?) research station called Terra. Noah has been heavily involved in trying to find a solution to FTL travel. He's not gotten that problem solved even though he's been working on it for a long time. Kara suggests they need a brake and wants to go back to New Earth for a spell. Reluctantly, Noah agrees so they are off to New Earth to visit with friends. One of their best and longest friends are the Gates.
Then there is Isaac Diaz, son of Juan Diaz. Isaac is a young man with an undefined future. He's currently working in the Biological Research lab at the Colonial Research Institute's West Campus. It doesn't appear that he's all that interested in the job because he's always coming in late. The scientist he works for as an intern, isn't please with his lack of timeliness and is about ready let him go. Still, another scientist steps in and offers to give Isaac another chance which he readily accepts since he finds out another intern, a very attractive intern named Ella Kingston, also works for Dr. Rostova. These scientist are working on a program that will improve and enhance the fertility rate in the female Ovarrow so they can stop and reverse their declining population rate. The apparent drop in fertility in female Ovarrow had something to do with the hibernation methods the Ovarrow had used to hide from the Krake. This one group of Ovarrow, the Mekaal were especially hard hit since there were only about fifty-thousand of them now and that number was slowing decreasing. The Mekaal were allies of the Colonist although that relationship wasn't supported by all Mekaal.
So, this group of scientist along with their chosen interns were going to the capital city of the Mekaal to attempt to further their study of this fertility problem and begin developing some kind of serum to improve the birth rate in the Ovarrow. While this research was supposed to be done in secret, apparently factions within the Mekaal who didn't like humans had already told the Konus about this research. The Konus was a very hostile sect of Ovarrow that lived a pretty fair distance away from any human settlement. They believed that the humans were invaders of their planet and wanted most of them gone. These Konus Ovarrow were always causing trouble.
Back to the Connor and Lenora Gates expedition...when Noah and Kara visited, they invited them to go on the expedition. Since it sounded interesting to both and something very different than what they had been doing, they agreed to go. Then Juan Diaz had a really bad argument with his son, Isaac, about him going to work with the scientist in the Ovarrow capital city. Juan Diaz did not like the Ovarrow. He didn't trust them and wanted nothing to do with them if at all possible. He certainly didn't want his son working right in the middle of fifty-thousand of them. Yet, his son was of an age to make decisions on his own so he was going. Juan's wife, Victoria, knew her husband with angry with this situation so she persuaded Connor to invite Juan to the expedition so he could get away from everything for awhile. Connor managed to do the get Juan to go with him, but it wasn't easy.
Now the expedition is off and everything seems to be going well until they meet up with a group of the Konus! Instead of immediately fighting each other, Connor gets the leader of the Konus scout team to start sharing some information. They soon discover information about a group of Ovarrow called the Bhatdin. This information leads them to the far, far north of New Earth where neither human or Ovarrow have ever gone. They all wonder what they might find there.
At the same time, the scientist at the Mekaal capital city are enroute to present their findings to the High Commissioner. Only the convoy gets attacked and it appears the Konus are involved along with a few Mekaal. Isaac Diaz is among the group kidnapped. It won't be good for the Ovarrow when Juan Diaz finds out. His son better not be harmed!
So, while we have no major enemy, the author has chosen to come up with the Konus again as the antagonist. He's done this before when the Konus army attacked the Mekaal in their capital city and were only pushed back because of the CDF's intervention. What will happen this time? Either way and according to the author, this appears to be the end of the First Colony series. It was a very good run.
As a very old sci-if fan, I really enjoyed the 12 books. Many books go a length and then just end, I really look forward to the series continue it even more to the next generation of the Gates, Diaz, etc clans. This brings me back too when I first started treading Isaac Asimov back in the 1960’s. I loved it then I love it now. Ken Lozito, the author, has his good points and bad. The only criticism is the storyline jumps too much near the end, I’d rather read it as it developed instead of a “what happened” at the end. The good points, and open of the best, is that the characters grow in each book and don’t stagnate into always being the same. Definitely recommend the series…
Another great story of the First Colony Series. New discoveries about other factions that lived on New Earth. New interactions with the Konus and a group of scientists trying to help with a genetically problem that prevents the female Mekaal (Ovarrow). They get in the middle of power struggles between Mekaal and Konus and the Colonial mistrust. Connor, Lenora, Díaz, Noah and Kara has to unravels the different problems and the get more complicated, rescue the scientists and Isaac, Díaz son.
The Krake home world was destroyed and the colony is recovering from the war while still being alert for Krake survivors. They also have to deal with the Meekaal and Kronos factions. Connor, Lenora and Diaz lead a team to try and locate new sites which might provide more information about the history of the planet and Overrow. Things never go as planned.
Solid return of the series, splits the focus between our traditional protagonists and one of the old favourites’ sons. A more intimate tale returns exclusively the colony whilst merely hinting at the wider scale.
This is easy reading, with frequent callbacks reminding you of things you read earlier. That will illustrate some, but it’s pleasantly low energy reading and escapism with familiar characters.
Impulse was quite a bit different than the last several books. Almost a decade has passed since the Krake war ended. We are introduced to some new characters and caught up with some old friends. With no wars occurring, there are no space scenes and significantly less fighting scenes. The focus seems to be orienting us in the current timeline and setting up the next several storylines.
We get to meet a new generation of colonists in this installment, including one of Diaz's sons. While trying to find his niche in the world, he and a group of scientists are kidnapped. Their story is full of action and adventure, and we see how Diaz and Connor go about trying to help the kidnapped group.
General Connor Gates is still firmly in charge of the CDF as their society has to deal with the challenges that come with reducing the numbers of people & associated resources without reducing the quality & capabilities of their peacetime military. Plus the part where they run into the creature on the book cover alone proves the need for protection!
I have read all of the books in this series and I hope that they don't stop and keep coming!!! I really enjoy the characters and their interactions with each other. The storyline is interesting as well. I will continue to read this series as long as the author puts new books out!
I've missed Connor and his friends and family 's exploits.this book is a little calmer than the others. Not as exciting not as much drama, I expected more new info about the planet.
More information about what might have happened to earth, thought they may have got the FTL working, loved the book, definitely want more.
I wasn't expecting another First Colony book oh, but I was pleasantly surprised by this one. I enjoyed how they explore more about the various factions of aliens that live around them. The humour was as always funny, the action very good, and the story flowed very smoothly I could barely put the book down.
I've enjoyed every book and highly recommend reading them in order. The story line grows and each book leaves u satisfied while still leaving ideas for what might happen next. If the series stopped now it would be ok, but another book or 2 per year developing the characters would be amazing.
Great read as I follow this saga -Impulse (First Colony Book 12)
I appreciate the characters, crisis management and battle situations against a unknown hazards , deadly creatures, tensions of forming a fledgling and multiple alien cultures. Plus many life challenges -New relationships, friends, kids and career choices. Delightful read.
Well there goes another sleepless night as I couldn't put it down. Love this series, great characters, and good balance of humor with the great action. Looking forward to seeing how the series expands. Highly recommended
This book good storyline, it sure seems like good stepping stone to variety of path to follow. Definitely recommend, but you have to read at least couple of first books to get some history.
Once again a great read as the colonists develop their interactions with the other inhabitants of New Earth. New factions and story lines. Generation follows generation. Intelligently written and fast paced.
From the first book to the last, the serie kept me awake at night and wanting more. I am in no rush with being done with the characters and the story but Please bring us home and give us a nice closure when this is all done.
Really enjoyed this book took me a little time to get into the story line but from then on it was a can't put the book down, I do hope Ken continues with the series as their seems to be multiple story lines.
I have been amazed at how The First Colony books have kept me in suspense and has such a rich cast of characters. I hope this series goes on for many years. Ken Lozito is an excellent writer. Wonderful job, Ken!
Mr. Lizito’s characters of his stories are well defined and full of depth. There are touching moments and page turning action. I can’t wait for book 13, and more!
The book was good until the very end! Those last couple of chapters just fizzled. The ending with the scientist just went to crap. And no teasers at all with the info that the regular group collected??
I liked all the previous books, but this one just feels like a quick cash grab. The book is already short as it is, but besides that it’s also filled up with many repetitions of what happened in previous books.
So it's good to see Conner and the crew are still surviving and exploring. Again characters are all strong and I really like the discoveries that they find and explore.
I enjoyed this novel as much as the others, and I like the universe the author has built. I'd love to the narrative shift away from the current cast of characters and explore other things once Noah's project is done.
This is one of the better books in the series. It brought the story full circle, introducing new characters. It is either a nice ending or a solid beginning to take the "franchise" in a different direction.
More secrets revealed. More enemies. More alliances. Seemingly a typical day on New Earth. With the Krake threat ended, things turn to the situation on NE, with the different parties and how they will live together.
More new earth side problems. Solving the Newie birth crisis, fighting within the newie ranks. And childern setting out on their own. Also finding out more about the ones that came before that may be much more advanced than anyone we've seen so far.

I was completely frustrated by the book flap stating Diaz's son is killed. It makes me angry when things don't add up. Dear mr. Author please change this book's inaccurate blank flap. It's making me nuts!
This was a good continuation of the series. It introduces a couple new characters that added greatly to the series. I'm enjoying the continuation of the main storyline with the new evolution of the main characters.
