Meritage: An Unexpected Blend - The Gelbert Family Winery A Five Families Vineyard Series Book
Cocky, confident, and completely over his head. He's about to take DILF to a whole new level. Natalie Lloyd is the most efficient woman on the planet and she just figured out how to convert bad boy player David Gelbert into a boyfriend.
David’s in love for the first time in his life and it happens to be with two women. One doesn’t want children and the other is still in diapers.
The Juggle is Real.
David Everything was perfect. My winery start-up is on track, my palate is on point, and for the first time in my entire life, I’m in love with a woman who accepts everything that I am. I've never wanted more than one night with a woman but she's like a perfect crisp Sauvignon Blanc on a hot day. There's never enough. She doesn’t care about my black sheep status and I finally feel I don’t deserve it. Natalie had no one in the world until my insane extended family and me. Close the book. Write The End, and let’s call it a Happily Ever After. And then my phone rang.
No name. No Mom. And No way this is my baby. Except she looks exactly like my great aunt, who looks exactly like me. The Gelbert gene is strong in this little redheaded stranger. She has no one in the world except my insane extended family and me. Now I have to figure out how to love two things more than I’ve ever loved anything in my life.
Somehow I have to do it without losing either one of them.
I used to create "dreams" with my best friend growing up. We'd each pick a boy we liked, then we'd write down a meet-cute that always ended with a happily ever after.
Now I get to dream every day, although it's a little steamier these days. And I've discovered I can and will write anywhere I can. Keep tuned to Instagram to see all the times I fit in a sentence or two.
I'm a writer, married to a writer, mother of a creative dynamo of a nine-year-old boy and currently a little sleepy. I'm a klutz and goofball and love lipstick as much as my Chuck Taylors.
Good things in the world: pepperoni pizza, Flair pens*, wine, coffee, laughing with my friends until my stomach hurts, a musician at the top of their game, getting lost somewhere I've never been, matinee movies on a weekday, the Chicago Cubs, a fresh new notebook full of possibilities, bourbon on a cold night, Fantasy Football, witty men, walking through the local zoo in the rain and that moment when a character clicks in and begins to write their own adventure. I'm just the pen.
Meritage is book 6 in the Five Families Vineyard series by Kelly Kay. It is a rom-com told from both POV with a HEA.
Tropes: ✔️ single father ✔️ friends to lovers ✔️ hero falls first
Meritage offers a perfect blend of humor, steamy romance, swoon worthy moments and a touch of chaos that keeps you entertained throughout.
The standout character, David Gelbert, is an absolute sweetheart. Cocky yet endearing, he brings an irresistible charm to the story. His journey from a notorious player to a man in love is both hilarious and heartwarming. I couldn't help but root for him as he navigates the complexities of his newfound emotions and girls in his life.
The first half of the book had me in stitches, with witty dialogue and laugh-out-loud moments. The author's ability to infuse humor into the story is commendable, and it made the reading experience immensely enjoyable.
While David stole the show, I must admit that I found Natalie a bit exasperating in the second half. However, this didn't detract significantly from my overall enjoyment of the story.
I regret is not starting the series from the beginning. The Five Families Vineyard and its loveable characters seemed like a tight-knit and supportive group, but as a new reader, I occasionally struggled to keep track of everyone's relationships and roles. Nevertheless, the story itself was engaging enough to keep me invested.
Meritage is a delightful read that will make you laugh, smile, and swoon. Kelly Kay's writing style is engaging and entertaining, creating a perfect escape into a world of romance and vineyard shenanigans. If you're looking for a light-hearted romantic comedy with a dash of chaos, this book is definitely worth picking up.
Meritage: An Unexpected Blend is my first book by Kelly Kay, and I'm impressed by her writing. The world she created is beautiful and realistic. She clearly has researched the wine-making process and explains it in a way that is easy to understand. Kelly Kay has a unique writing style. I loved her comparisons, and I baptized her the comparison queen. I enjoyed the fast pace of this story, it constantly is moving, making progress. Her characters are so real, I felt they could walk into my living room at any point. Both main characters grew so much during the story, and I wanted them to succeed and become that other/better version of themselves.
Looking back on his history, David is a douchebag, but it was nice to discover what was hidden under that douchy layer. In the end, I felt sorry for him, everyone always assumed he fucked up, and he was the only one who was wrong in a situation without even knowing the whole situation.
Natalie thinks she finally has found where she belongs but soon discovers she still has a lot to learn about herself. Her past made her independent with big walls and lots of stubbornness. At some point, she was so stubborn I wanted to smack her head into the wall.
It's lust at first sight for this couple, and when they get to it, it makes for some sexy scenes. The sex scenes aren't really long or super steamy, but the author still makes them sexy.
This book can be read as a standalone. I didn't read the other books either, and it wasn't a problem to follow the storyline, but I think I would have known/understand David'spast better if I had seen him in the previous books. The change also would have had a bigger impact on me as a reader. I also would have a better understanding of the group/families dynamics if I had read the other books first. I enjoyed reading Meritage: an unexpected blend. The other books are on my TBR now, so hopefully, I will get there soon.
If you want to read a smartly written, fast-paced story with the right amount of drama, one that will make you laugh and cry, everything in between, then this is your next read.
I received an ARC from the author but am voluntarily leaving my honest review.
So, do you like to read stories with smart writing?Characters so real that they refuse to stay on the page? Well these are only a few things you get when you pick up a book by my favorite Kelly Kay!
Welcome back to the Sonoma Valley, where we get to be reunited with the Five families! I am so happy to be back! We have met David Gelbert in Kelly’s previous books, and to be honest he was a bit of a douchebag, he’s the kindof character that you really do not want to like. But with all characters in a Kelly Kay story, David is more than what we are lead to believe. His life is about to go in a direction he is just isn’t prepared for, and it is absolutely amazing to watch him grow and become a better man, and probably one of my favorite of Kelly’s characters.
Then there is Natalie, she is just wants to belong somewhere, she thinks she may have finally found her place here with the five families, maybe. This is a bumpy road of self discovery for Natalie, but the question is will she get out of her own way and find her home in this beautifully vined place?
Kelly Kay is on the top of my list of 1-clicks, I don’t read any teasers, or blurbs I always go in blind, because I know whatever she puts out will have a little drama, plenty of heart and the perfect amount of heat.
If you haven’t read a Kelly Kay story I do not know what you are waiting for! I have yet to be disappointed, so please take a chance. You really need these books in your life!
Meritage is most definitely an unexpected blend!! Finally getting David Gelbert's story of the wonderful 5, this player has his life turned upside by not one by two women. Kelly Kay does a great job in writing David and his charming and not so charming wit. The descriptions of a raised brow or signature smirk even had me swooning hard. But it's Natalie Lloyd, the quiet backbone of his shared winery who falls happily for David until life does a number on both of them and everyone who cares for the couple is left wondering just how they'll be able to keep their newfound love alive.
Talk about one crazy ride. I was almost exhausted for David, in particular, who fights so damn hard to keep Natalie once his not-so-small secret of baby Sadie is found out. Their whirlwind romance is fun, flirty, and exactly what the other craved without even knowing it. Natalie's issues, however, being an orphan who never truly feels like she belongs are truly at the crux of this story. Once Sadie is a most definite part of David's world forever, it's Natalie who can't seem to figure out where she'll fit in. My heart broke for her and the hard-to-shake thoughts of abandonment. But her defiance in not wanting to work things out as David groveled, begged, and pleaded for the love of his life to at least hear him out drove me a bit mad. To resist this charming ginger with the exceptional 'parade' was insane to me. I wanted to shake Natalie to wake up and realize just what she would be walking away from.
I'm just thankful Kay had the dynamic duo of Bax and Tabi aid Natalie in a pivotal scene that saved this book for me. In fact, let's face it, the rest of the 5 and their significant others and families are what makes this book and those before it so damn addictive. They have this crazy-good and yes, sometimes dysfunctional (more than sometimes, ok) relationship with one another but when the chips are down, they rally like nobody's business no matter what. The support paired with plenty of good-natured ribbing is what draws me into this wonderful cast of characters each and every time. Not to mention the addition of baby Sadie, who is one heck of an adorable scene-stealer. She is her father's daughter and will undoubtedly make his life that much more incredible.
Overall, the love story that is the douchenozzle and his Sunshine was a ton of fun and I'm actually very surprised just how much I have come to love David. I wasn't a big fan in previous books but getting to see a different side to him, still keeping his sharp humor intact despite the circumstance, had me rooting for him to keep his girl and enjoy being the sexy DILF that he had become.
With Natalie, I was happy to see her get a backbone and start letting go of the heavy baggage she has carried for so long. Her trysts with David were great to read as the feelings built up over such a short period of time were solidified every time they lost themselves in one another. It is and was true love from the start and I could feel it each time they were near one another, even during their times apart.
Another great addition to the Winery collection, Meritage and its predecessors always leave me with a huge craving for some really good wine once I'm finished reading. As a pour a much-deserved glass, I'm hopeful that we will get more, and soon since Sam needs his story continued as well. Cheers to this well-written and engaging book.
Love comes quickly for David and Natalie - even if they’re not in a hurry to say those words. They are perfect together until fate and David’s past try to interfere. Too rare in other romance novels, I am touched by the care which Kelly Kay takes in navigating childhood trauma and painful or difficult familial relationships. Sure, the sex is hot, LOL, but the writing is smart and funny and thoughtful - all of which help make the characters seem real. You’ll enjoy Meritage (said like ‘heritage’, I now know) and all of the Five Families Wineries books. Looking forward to the next because Kelly, WHERE IS SAMMY?!?
I have had this book on my TBR for way too long! I wish I would’ve known how amazing this book was! Since Kelly Kay is a new to me author, I think I just put it on the back burner but I never should have!
This unexpected blend of family dynamics, love, swoon-worthy moments and steam was tremendously beautiful. Natalie is such a strong female lead along with the other strong female side characters. David adds so much with his personality that comes alive on the pages! I seriously need to read all the others of this wonderful wine family!!
David and Nat's story has the perfect combination of steam versus sensitivity. The characters compliment each other so well and you are rooting for them both from the get go. I loved this book and the themes it touched on. David's perseverance in winning over Nat is everything you want from a hero and I don't think I'll ever hear the word parade from now on and not think of this book!
I highly recommend this! It was funny, steamy, and emotional wrapped in one. There were definitely times I wanted to slap David and Natalie, but that was because I was so invested! If you’re a romance fan, definitely add this to your TBR.
This is a new to author who I now need to binge! These families are incredible and complex I haven't read a boom like this in forever . the story was so fast paced but multi layered.
Whenever I think Kelly Kay has written my favourite couple, she shows me up. David is the perfect blend of chaos, sweetness and naively selfish idiocy. And Natalie is the bent but not broken heroine he needs. This story is perfection
I have to say that I did not like David when I “met” him in prior books in these series. And it was such a great reminder not to be a judgy asshole, whether towards books, fictional, or real people.
David was never taken seriously. And he welcomed that. He convinced himself that this was okay and that he is what he wanted. When he met Natalie, an organizational queen with some seriously heavy baggage, he had no chance to pull his usual routine off. He was a goner.
But life, as it always does, throws a monkey wrench, as it usually does. And it’s big enough of one that seriously tries and pulls in peril this budding relationship.
Ms. Kay did an incredible job writing David. His POV chapters/sections are my favorite because it perfectly depicts the stream of consciousness thought process that often happens in the neurodivergent brain.
And Natalie’s story, while heartbreaking, shines a much-needed light around these heavier themes.
I love how the Five Families always rally around their own. I always relish a visit with these characters and I hope there are more books to come because I am not ready to say goodbye!
This book and (this whole series!) is a definite #RogueRecommends five-star read!
Meritage is my first book by Kelly Kay, and I am utterly impressed. Her writing is intelligent while being playful, authentic, and emotionally complex.
Natalie and David have an instant attraction, and their chemistry is on fire. Their connection is unexpected and blends cheeky banter and a deep bond.
When a baby shows up on the steps of the winery, it rocks David's world. I wanted to shake sense into Natalie and David and also wanted to wrap them up in a hug. Neither of them handles it well, but it only makes their resolution at the end that much sweeter.
I loved the ways that David showed his affection while giving Natalie a connection to family. I was swooning watching this playboy fall deeply for Natalie and little 'Scribbles.' It was also endearing to see David's relationships with his family evolve after becoming a father.
Meritage can be read as a standalone. You meet the whole family and are given hints into their own stories. I am eager to meet these characters from the beginning.
*An advanced copy was provided in exchange for an honest review.
This is the first book in the series I have read and I will look to go back and read the others now. I really enjoyed the characters and story which had the perfect balance on information so you got an idea of previous books without feeling like you missed what was needed for this story. David and Natalie are perfect for each other and your heart breaks a little when Sadie arrives on the scene and while you can see David doing what he can Natalie needs to work through how her past is affecting her now in order for the three of them to become a family. This has a good mix of fun, heartbreak, family and love that reals you in and leaves you excited that there is another book coming.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Kelly Kay...you have wrecked me! Honestly, I was not expecting to enjoy this read as much as I did. It was the perfect solution to a reading slump. I laughed, I cried, I yelled, I fell in love. Just a marvelous read! The ups, downs, and spicy scenes are just perfect! If you're in search of a story that you can fall into and forget about the world around you, this is it! It is perfectly written, the story is amazing, Kelly Kay is a goddess!
If you've read any of this series, you know David Gelbert is a douchnozzel to highest degree. Your heart sunk just a little when at the end of Under the Bus there was of him and sweet Natalie. The ride of love and acceptance was wild and twisted, and the unexpected happily ever after you hoped for cave true. It's sweet, it's dirty, and just makes your heart full.
The five family stories get better each time as they expand! I love having stories that you have invested in the characters! Hot, funny, laughing out loud and very meaningful. These are Kelly’s books. You’ll want to keep reading and re reading till the next one comes out!
The orphan who never feels she belongs has to deal with a lot of emotions. And the guy who needs to grow up meets his match and learns some hard lessons in adulting. Well done.
Funny and hot !!! David and Natalies story is hot and funny. First book from Kelly Kay and it was the boom !!! David and Natalies chemistry is of the rockets. Both learn to trust and wish for something greater.
I have been aware of Kelly for a while thanks to her deliciously wonderful covers so when I got the chance to read Meritage, I jumped at the chance. I loved everything about it, and I can't wait to read more from this talented author.
This book was just so so good - I loved it. Witty, hilarious banter, gorgeous and flawed characters, great friends, supportive and interfering families, heartstopping swoony moments, cute babies, sizzling steam, and the perfect HEA. Read this now!.

Now it’s the turn of the Gelbert family to have their story in Meritage: An Unexpected Blend. If you didn’t start on the Five Families Vineyard Series yet, you don’t know what you’re missing!!! You get to know the entire crowd and have a glimpse of their personalities throughout the stories, and they are much more than you first thought!
David is a one-night-stand guy. He doesn’t do relationships. While growing up, he had a caring mother, but miscommunication with his father brought some consequences to his personality. He’s the type of guy you want to punch in the face on a few occasions. Well, his friends do that when he needs it. But there is so much more under that jerkish façade! And all it takes is a blondie to change all that.
Natalie is the new secretary and perfection personified, and her refusal to fall for his charms when they first met gets his attention, but it doesn’t take long for them to succumb into temptation. Natalie is a complex character with a sad past, and one she didn’t get over yet. She yearns to belong somewhere and with someone, and to have a place to call home, but when baby Sadie comes along, she just gets into her fleeting mode again.
Both characters are complex with troubled backstories, plus a newly discovered baby crashes into their newly found routine, turning their relationship upside down. Their relationship is smoking hot and fun, full of sexy flirting and steamy scenes between them. You laugh out loud with the crazy situations they get themselves into. Some scenes with David as a first-time father and clueless are hilarious. You cry when they look lost in their conflicts, and scream at them when they behave senselessly, wanting to shake the crap out of Natalie sometimes. The story is a beautiful rainbow of emotions that you go through with pleasure!
My admiration for Kelly Kay grows with each book I read. She always tackles important themes in her story with great skill, lightening up with wacky situations and laughs, but getting the message across. Her mastery in managing so many colorful characters (all of them with great importance within each story) is amazing. You know who is who, and better yet, you get to know them deeper each time, and they happily welcome you as one of them!
Likeable, complex characters. I really enjoyed reading this. After all the stories in the series so far, I feel like I know the various characters in the 5 Families, and in this we dig into David and, Tabi and Bax’s assistant extraordinaire Natalie’s, lives and love. The first part is all light and sexy as these two get together – despite the repeated warnings to stay away from each other – and explores the obvious chemistry they have. From there, the story hits a major speed bump which bursts their relationship bubble, splitting them up, as insecurities from the past derail their future. The banter between them is fabulously well written. The way their story plays out within the whole timeline and fits into what the other members of the second generation of the 5 have happening is perfect, and the overall character development we get from both David and Nat is what makes this book an outstanding read. A well named novel with Meritage being a blended wine and striving for a successfully blended family, is the overriding theme of this enjoyable read.
Kelly Kay does it again! Another super steamy romance with so much packed into one book! When you read her books it’s like you’re swept away into a rom com movie playing so vividly in your head! I’m so obsessed! Nat had a very sad and difficult childhood that left some scars on her heart, but she is fiercely independent and so passionate about everything she does. David has always been known as a ladies man, but then he meets Nat and only has eyes for her. Their connection is instant and undeniable. This book is packed with so much steam and it’s done so so well! There are definitely some bumps in the road and unexpected surprises, but in true Kelly Kay fashion we get an unforgettable happily ever after!!
OMG, this is a must read! A strong, but fragile heroine. A swoony, douche nozzle book boyfriend (if you know, you know!).
Natalie is such a cute, sweet girl and you can't help but want to keep her safe- make sure she's taken care of. Problem is, she doesn't like to open up, so her friends don't know what's behind her strong exterior.
And David!!! He's the reformed player, falling for the girl who won't fall for his charms, until she does. But he is the SWEETEST! So incredibly thoughtful, but DAMN SEGGSY!
The friendships, the bonds, the craziness of the 5 and their families was EVERYTHING! It was not only entertaining, but so full of feels!
SO PERFECT!!! Unique and hysterical take on a secret baby book. David is my new book boyfriend. Although, Josh from Crushing is hard to beat as well. Love. Love. Love this winery series.
As I plow through this incredible series. This one stands out to me. So funny and perfect. I love a former player groveling and falling first. And just swoon. Swoon.
𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 When Natalie accepts her former boss and friend Bax’s request to help out at the new winery he owns with his best friends, she can’t refuse. David Gelbert, player extraordinaire, is always around and he’s taken a liking to strait laced and super organized Natalie. When Natalie eventually gives in to the attraction, the chemistry is all there, and she is finally able to share her past with him. But when a surprise curveball appears in David’s life, Natalie struggles to accept his affections for her.
𝗠𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 This is book 6 of the 8 in this series, and I have really enjoyed reading them all. Super spicy, straight talking, the characters have been in each other’s lives for some time and say it like it is. The friend group is strong, but it’s a plus and a minus for Natalie to accept as an outsider. Both Natalie and David have their own complex emotional backgrounds that hold them back. David’s is a life of privilege, Natalie’s is abandonment and loneliness. I struggled to put this book down 😉❤️
This was a cute read witha hea. The characters were great. Only think that made it hard to get into this book was the use of parade for me and the inventive alternatives to swearing by one character.
