I was a big fan of The Steal, so I was excited to see what C.W. Gortner and M.J. Rose would come up with for The Bait. This short novella was a great follow-up to book 1, and this is the first time I have read a series in the form of novellas. Each one has given just a taste of what is to come, and I think it has been an interesting ride so far. The pacing is fairly quick, and I really enjoy the way the story is told in alternating viewpoints between Jerome and Ania. Ania drove me a little bit crazy in this installment, and I just really wished she would let Jerome in as she gets a little obsessive about tracking her father down.

I listened to and loved The Steal on audio, but I didn't want to wait for it to come out for The Bait so I went ahead and read it. I don't think you can go wrong with either format, and this was definitely a super quick read, so you don't necessarily need the audiobook. The Venice setting was quite entrancing, and I loved the descriptions of the city throughout the book. I thought this was a bit of a slower burn compared to the first book, but it felt more intense if that makes sense. I felt like the story really kept me on my toes, and I had no idea what to expect. If you read and enjoyed The Steal, I think you will enjoy The Bait as well!

I received a complimentary digital copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

The Story: Set in Venice, Italy a year after The Steal, Ania and Jerome are still on the hunt for the Leopard. However, their plain to set the bait for the notorious thief during the Venetian Carnival takes an unexpected twist that makes Jerome now the person-of-interest in police investigation.

My thoughts: The Bait is the second novella of To Catch a Leopard series and I enjoyed it! I liked that there was more character depth as we get to know more about Ania and Jerome. Their endearing relationship is put to the test in this book and I am not going to spoil anything here!

This novella has less action compared to the first one but I liked the overall plot. It was intense! You do have to start this series from the beginning since the big twist from the first book was the main focus in this story. I am definitely looking forward to reading The Heist - the final book of this series!

I just loved reading this fast paced novella full of mystery, glamour and of course an incredible caper story line. I loved reading about the Venetian Carnival and the gala while Ania and Jerome try to catch the elusive Leopard. Such a fun read!

💎The Bait -Review 💎

( Book #2 : To Catch a Leopard Trilogy)

📆 NEW RELEASE: 01/04/2022

I enjoyed this one even more than the first book! I linked my review for “The Steal” ( Book #1) in my stories and also some tidbits about the co-authors that I was fortunate enough to learn in a LIVE Interview with @getredpr last year. It’s hard to review this one without giving much away but alas I will try!

The setting is late 1950’s Venice at the THEE event of the year, the costume gala of Contessa di Maglione aka former actress Julie Kimbell. Everyone who is anyone is bound to be there including Ania Throne, heir to the Thorne Jewelry Legacy, with her new beaux in tow.

This novella is a bit cozy mystery; a lot familial revenge. At times it’s laugh out loud funny from Ania talking to her robe to a cringy hot & sweaty broad rubbing against Jerome’s groin. In other moments the reader can cut the tension in the room with a knife. Jerome is used to all eyes being on his leading lady but he surely didn’t expect an all too-close encounter with her charming ex- fiancé. Nor did Ania imagine a gorgeous guest adorned in emerald would have the hots for her seemingly out of place insurance agent date.

When the most expensive piece of jewelry at the ball goes missing who is to blame, but more importantly who is about to go down for the crime?

I can’t express how much I adore these covers as well, they’re the very definition of glamour and I can’t wait to display them both on my bookshelves beside one another. I now anxiously await the sequel’s release in August and yet I don’t want their story to end!

If you need me I’ll be sipping my Bellini in a Gondola until my next review 💁🏻‍♀️. 🥂

Note: This is not a stand-alone, you must read the novella prior to it.

Thank you to #partners Get Red PR, Blue Box Press, C.W. Gortner & M.J. Rose for a #gifted copy in exchange for my honest review.

I am enjoying this To Catch A Leopard novella trilogy by C.W. Gortner and M.J. Rose.

The Bait dives right in where The Steal left off. Ania and Jerome are trying to lure in the Leopard after he escaped them in Paris. They have arrived in Venice to attend the Venetian Carnival in hopes that the Leopard will show himself. Ania and Jerome are definitely not experienced or even amateur detectives so it's fun to read about them trying.

I do wish that I had re-read The Steal again prior to reading The Bait. It had been long enough that it took me a little bit to remember what the back story was. This trilogy will be perfect to read back to back.

We continue the hunt for the notorious thief known as the Leopard with the main characters Ania and Jerome. Ania plans to draw her father out by stealing one of his first creations that he tried to get back for display but failed to do. Quickly though, Ania and Jerome realize they are in over their head after the stolen jewelry is discovered before they anticipated and they are in the head detective’s spotlight. The Leopard seems to be one step ahead at all times by setting the two up to fail. The question is….who will succeed? The Leopard and his dubious ways, or the newly in love couple wanting revenge for a betrayal?

This was such a quick read. Enjoyable and short. A tad realistic even because it showed the couple bickering and not head over heels through it all. I found myself mad at Ania in this book though. Hopefully the third book redeems her and her father gets what’s coming to him.

Happy to get my hands on another fun, twisty story of greed and revenge among the rich and famous with The Bait !

This follow-up to The Steal (which you should read first) takes place in late 1958, one year later. Ania Throne, head of her family’s jewelry empire, is still angry about the sizable theft which occurred in Cannes. She’s determined to teach the perpetrator—believed to be the notorious jewelry thief the Leopard—a lesson.

Ania plans a heist of her own during the Venetian Carnival, hoping to flush out the Leopard. And while her lover, former insurance investigator Jerome Curtis, is in on the heist, he’s struggling to understand exactly where he fits in her glamorous world. But when things go awry with the scheme, they both realize that they’re playing a more complicated and dangerous game than they thought.

As a stranger to the circles in which Ania moves, Jerome is quickly eyed with suspicion for the crime. He’s going to need all of his wits about him to save himself—but is Ania on his side or off on her own?

I love the feel of these books and these characters fascinate me. I’m always up for a good heist story, the time period is right in my wheelhouse, and C.W. Gortner and M.J. Rose really make the setting so evocative.

This ends with a serious cliffhanger, but luckily the third book, The Heist , comes out in August! (See my review for The Steal here.)

Thank you GetRedPr and Blue Box Press for the gifted copy.

This is the second novella in C.W. Gortner and M.J. Rose’s trilogy and this romantic caper was just as fun and thrilling as the first one, The Steal. These two authors, whose books I have read separately, really know how to collaborate to create a fun, enjoyable tale.

I highly suggest reading the first novella before reading this one. It’s not that long and it really does provide the necessary background for what is the overarching thread in this whole trilogy. That’s not to say you cannot just pick this one up, but I think you will have a much richer reading experience if you do. And again, it’s a novella like this one, so it’s a super short read!

In this second installment, we meet up with Ania and Jermone a year after last seeing them and this time we find them in Venice trying to set a trap to catch the infamous Leopard. While they know the identity of the Leopard, and those of us who read the first novella do, too, I won’t put it here in case you haven’t.

I loved how the story is once again told from both Ania and Jerome’s points of view, giving us the opportunity to see events unfold from both their perspectives. The pacing here is just slightly slower than that last one, but I didn’t mind that one bit…I loved all the descriptions of the city of Venice and of the gala that Ania and Jerome attended. I will say I was a little discouraged with the way Ania seemed to be keeping Jerome at arm’s length here…and I hope this is further explored in the final novella, the reasoning and rationale, though I do have my suspicions.

This installment ends with a bit of a cliffhanger, but luckily we don’t have to wait that long for the next story – it’s out in August and I cannot wait to get my hands on it!

I was fortunate to get an early look at The Bait and loved it almost as much as The Steal. The second novella in a series of three, The Bait picks up the timeline just a little after where you'd expect from where the The Steal ended. Anyone who loved The Steal for the late 50's glamor will still continue to be satisfied. Venice makes an even more gorgeous setting than Cannes and I was left wanting to hear more about the setting.
There doesn't seem to be as much tension involving the Leopard this time as most of his scenes are covert and some of his actions were predictable. We do meet a lovely new side character that I hope will have a role in book 3. There is more tension between Jerome and Ania than in the first novella and it isn't pure romantic tension. The ending was a bit shocking, even if it is a perfect cliff-hanger for book 3.
Overall I am anxiously awaiting book 3, projected to be released later this year. Even in my anticipation, I am already sad that book 3 will finish out this fun series.

Ania and Jerome are hot on the trail of the Leopard. The Leopard is baiting Ania to try and stop him before it is too late. For the Leopard and Ania it is personal. Yet, will the Leopard escape again. Now that Ania and Jerome are together, they are stronger together.

I still struggle to form that strong emotional connection with Ania and Jerome. Yet, I do think they make a good team and I like to see them together. The presence of the Leopard being stronger in this story was great. It was fun to see the cat and mouse game between everyone.

These books do have a bit of a James Bond vibe. I am transported back in time and can see the whole story play out in my head while I am reading. Very quick read. While I may not have loved this book, I do want to see how it all ends in the third book.

I was happy to continue this novella (after reading The Steal) with jewelry designer Ania Thorne and Jerome Curtis. This time, they are in Venice trying to pull off a heist where Ania tries to take back a necklace that The Leopard stole from her. Things don’t go as planned when outsider, Jerome, comes under suspicion.

I like that these are quick and easy fast-paced reads. I also like that we get both Ania and Jerome’s points of view. We get to see how much Jerome has fallen in love with Ania. Ania seems to reciprocate these feelings, but she has a lot on her mind. It bothered me how she treated him, though—telling him what to do and what to wear.

I look forward to the next novella to see what happens as we were left with a cliffhanger in this one!

When you think jewelry heist and glamour - I think of those 1950's movies, like "To Catch a Thief" and also "The Pink Panther!" I thought of those again while reading The Bait, by C.W. Gortner andM.J. Rose part two of this 1950's jewelry heist novella trilogy. I liked this book better than the first, The Steal, although that was a fun read too.

This story again is read from two perspectives - Ania Thorne and Jerome Curtis. It starts with Ania Thorne seeking revenge against The Leopard - a jewelry thief who stole the jewels she and her father lovingly designed as part of her family's jewelry business (from the first book). She creates a caper to steal them back during the famous Venetian Carnival - a place where everyone who is someone is seen. But it goes all wrong and her lover, stand-up, former WWII soldier, outsider, solid Jerome Curtis (who has given up everything to be with her) is looked upon as the thief.

The story is fun and is a fun break. I found myself still liking Jerome's character more than Ania and I liked reading the story from his perspective.

It does have a cliffhanger ending - and that's okay. It works here and I look forward to Novella number three.

Read it for a light fun escape -you should read book one first - but not entirely necessary.

Thank you @mjroseauthor @getredprbooks @letstalkbookspromo for the opportunity to read this ebook in exchange for my honest review.

This is the second book in the 𝑻𝒐 𝑪𝒂𝒕𝒄𝒉 𝒂 𝑳𝒆𝒐𝒑𝒂𝒓𝒅 𝑺𝒆𝒓𝒊𝒆𝒔.

Ania and her lover, Jerome, are stunned when they discover the identity of the notorious jewel thief known as The Leopard (in 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑺𝒕𝒆𝒂𝒍) and they determine work together to plot revenge on this daring thief.

It is one year after Ania Thorne’s stunning jewel collection was stolen by The Leopard. Ania and Jerome travel to Venice as they plan to make a jewel heist of their own, to lure The Leopard to come to them. The jewel heist is a success, but with a small glitch when suspicion is unexpectedly cast on Jerome. Ania and Jerome have a plan to clear his name but The Leopard is more cunning and has a few surprises in store for Ania and Jerome!

𝑴𝒚 𝑻𝒉𝒐𝒖𝒈𝒉𝒕𝒔: I enjoyed 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑩𝒂𝒊𝒕 even more than 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑺𝒕𝒆𝒂𝒍! There is more dialogue between Ania and Jerome, and though their relationship appears strained at times, it begins to strengthen as the story moves to its dramatic and cliffhanging solution! This is a quick read, told in alternating viewpoints between Ania and Jerome. Read this if you love exciting mystery-romance stories!

𝑵𝒐𝒕𝒆: I have tried not to reveal any spoilers for readers who have not yet read the first book in this series, 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑺𝒕𝒆𝒂𝒍. Though this book can be read as a stand-alone, I recommend you start with the first book! It has a revelation you will not want to miss!

My thanks to NetGalley, @getredprbooks, and @letstalkbookspromo for my ebook. My thoughts are my own.

The Bait is the follow up novella to The Steal and is set a year in in the future from that book. Jewellery designer Ania Thorne and her lover, Jerome Curtis, a former insurance investigator are in Venice hot on the trail of infamous cat burglar The Leopard but while they are playing their game of cat and mouse, the big cat is getting ready to pounce on the mice.

I loved the setting of post war Venice at Carnival time. The opulent and seductive world of the rich and famous enjoying themselves without a care was tempered by Jerome’s reminder of the recent past events of the war and its victims. There are cracks beginning to show in his and Anita’s relationship as the strain of the extent Ania is willing to go to in her efforts to catch the Leopard take their toil especially as she appears to be hiding things from Jerome and it’s becoming more and more apparent that he doesn’t fit into her lifestyle. It seemed slightly odd to me that in this book the character of Jerome was the weaker half of the couple whereas in the first book he was more decisive and take charge. Then again there’s something unlikeable about character of Ania this time around that I can’t quite put my finger on. I also would’ve liked to have known what has happened in the intervening year between the books.

Whatever, I still can’t wait for the next instalment in the series which is set in the dazzling world of the movie studios of Hollywood.

Second in the unlabeled series, “To Catch a Leopard” and written in the 1950’s style of “To Catch a Thief,” Jerome has now given up his job to live and spend time with Ania at the family villa in Venice, Italy. While at a gala thrown by a jaded “B” movie star who flirts and dances with Jerome, Ania takes from the hostess' bedroom the piece de resistance that her father created.

Later, Ania reminisces how her father must have felt when he was thieving in younger days. Believing she got away with her heist, she also gloats a bit that she got away with stealing one of her father’s favorite pieces. She and Jerome have a tiff and he takes off after she goes to bed. When she wakes up from the night of partying and thieving, she discovers Jerome and the piece is gone with the constable at her door at 6 AM to question her. Since Jerome is the new-comer to the group gathered at the gala, the constable investigating has Jerome in his sites as the culprit.

Much of the rest of the novella is spent with all these facts and feelings mulled over and discussed as Ania and Jerome try to figure out a way to get the accusations towards Jerome stopped without giving away what has happened.

So far, my thinking is that this was originally meant to be a whole book in one and might have gone more smoothly in that vein as this was not as tightly woven as “The Chase”. It is nevertheless a nice, easy read.

Rose and Gartner create a binge-able 1950s caper series filled with high glamour and passionate romance! Last Summer, I read The Steal. Now, The Bait and the final book of this trilogy, The Heist to be released in August 2022. I recommend reading these books in order since The Bait focuses on the reveal of our jewelry thief.

In The Bait, the action continues as Ania comes to terms with the Leopard’s (our jewel thief) identity. Ania and Jerome plot to trap Leopard at his own game. But unfortunately, Jerome becomes the prime suspect instead.

I hoped for a bit more romance in The Bait because Ania and Jerome heated the pages in The Steal. But The Bait did introduce another lovely American that might possibly steal Jerome’s heart in Book 3? I love that this love triangle maybe exists.

The setting for The Bait only adds to the glamour! Set in Venice, Italy, Rose and Gartner illuminate Venice and its glory! The descriptions of the Canals, Calles, Piazza, and Palazzos set around the Venetian Carnival truly captured the Venetian spirit.

Overall, simply pure fun! The Bait’s cliffhanger perfectly sers up The Heist, so I look forward to reading the conclusion.

Thank you so much @getredprbooks @1001darknights_blueboxpress for the gifted copy of THE BAIT which is available 1/4/22. ✨

“Revenge is a diamond best served cold.”

THE BAIT is the second novella in the TO CATCH A LEOPARD series and takes place a year after book one. I didn’t love it quite as much as the first, but it was still a fun read! I have enjoyed these romantic capers featuring Ania and Jerome.

THE BAIT brings them to Venice in their attempt to bait and trap the Leopard and I really enjoyed reading about the glitz and glamour of Venice in the late 1950s. I won’t spoil anything, but the twist of who the Leopard is was such a great part of the first book! Definitely make sure you read these in order.

I think this one was just lacking a bit of action for me. There seemed to be a lot of talking and I enjoyed the drama, but I almost wish this was a full length novel so that more action could have been packed into it. I am still excited to read the final novella when it releases in August!

This novella is book 2 in a series of 3 and gives all the feels of the rich and the glamorous in the late 1950s.

It’s described as a romantic caper which it was and it was fabulous!

Set in Venice in Winter, Ania Thorne, a jewelry designer on sabbatical from her company, is out for revenge to snare a thief called the Leopard. She has enlisted her main man for the moment, Jerome, to help pull off the theft of a 120 carat canary diamond necklace.

There is some tension in the palazzo when the thieves become the victims and Jerome becomes suspect number one with the polizia.

There are some serious unresolved daddy issues for Ania and the ending is a cliffhanger that will leave you anticipating book 3.

This is a perfect series to read when you want a short, entertaining, and escape from real life book.

I purposefully read Book 2 first since that’s the one I was reviewing. I didn’t feel lost reading book 2 first but book 1 gives you more background on everything so if you can start there, I would.

Ooh la la, a classic 1950s jewelry theft filled with glamour, deception, and drama? Yes, please! I’ve never read anything like this before and I was loving it. I read through this one very quickly and am so ready to read the next book that comes out in this series.

This is the second novella of a series but can be read as a standalone as well. We get to meet Ania and Jerome who team up to steal an exquisite piece of jewelry at a contessa’s party. Things get heated real fast and the heist doesn’t seem to go as planned. I can’t even say any more because I don’t want to give it away, but I was over here like oooh Ania, what are you doing, girl.

It sounds like such a simple plot but there was so much wrapped up into it and I was constantly kept on my toes. I didn’t really know who I was rooting for until the very end so when I was done, I wished there was like 200 more pages for me to read so I could appreciate it all more.

This is a fun and classic read that you need to check out! I also think it’s a good one for getting out of a book slump, jussayin’…

The second novella in the To Catch a Leopard triology, THE BAIT finds the lovers Ania and Jerome in Venice, Italy during the Venetian Carnival a year after the events in THE STEAL. Determined to trap the Leopard, they plan a daring heist to steal the famed Lemon Twist necklace from Julie Kimbell during her own ball.

Events, however, do not go as planned, and Jerome becomes the focus of the investigation. He realizes Ania may not have been completely honest and that revenge may be more important than her feelings towards him.

This is a quick-paced, classic heist story with a touch of romance. I loved the Venice setting and all the 1950s glamour! The writing style evokes the era, and I think it’s unevenly successful. There’s a scene at a glass factory on Murano island that I really enjoyed: when I was in graduate school, I worked at a bead store and I still sometimes make jewelry so I enjoyed the descriptions of the necklaces and other accessories.

A good choice for readers looking for a quick, fun, romantic heist.

Are you a fan of old school, classic crime stories? Do you enjoy a bit of old Hollywood glitz and glamor? It’s time to put this fun trilogy set in the 1950’s on your radar!

THE BAIT by C.W. Gortner and M.J. Rose is the second installment in this romantic caper trilogy following Ania Thorne and Jerome Curtis. It’s essential in my opinion that you read these books in order, but at novella length that isn’t a hard goal to accomplish. Just like with the first book, THE STEAL, this second story is told through alternating narratives from Ania and Jerome. Set in Venice, the location plays a fun role in the story and the way things unfold. I love the new secondary characters that we’re introduced to in this story. These books are perfect for fans of mystery without the gore and can easily be consumed in one-sitting.

I’ve already marked my calendar for August when the final book of the trilogy, THE HEIST, is set to release!

“𝘙𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘯𝘨𝘦 𝘪𝘴 𝘢 𝘥𝘪𝘢𝘮𝘰𝘯𝘥 𝘣𝘦𝘴𝘵 𝘴𝘦𝘳𝘷𝘦𝘥 𝘤𝘰𝘭𝘥.” - C.W. Gortner and M.J. Rose, The Bait

The Bait picks up a year after we last saw famed jewelry designer and heiress, Ania and former insurance investigator, Jerome in New York after a big twist ending in The Steal. This time they are in Venice and Ania has planned a daring jewel heist during the Venetian Carnival to lure an infamous jewelry thief, known as the Leopard, out of hiding.

As with the first, this book ends with a cliffhanger and I cannot wait to see what's in store for this pair of unlikely lovers in Book 3.

Since these novellas run only about 130 pages, I recommend you read The Steal first to fully understand the back story behind the Leopard and to get a sense of Ania and Jerome’s unusual relationship. These books are fun crime capers full of 1950s glamour and, taken as a whole, would be like watching a Cary Grant and Grace Kelly feature film.

Diamonds are a girls best friend, and never more so than for Ania Throne. Together with her lover, Jerome, they begin to plot how to take revenge on Leopard, a notorious diamond thief who they unmasked in book #1.

This novella picks-up many months after the big reveal at the end of The Steal. The setting, Venice, a high-profile masquerade with simmering gems serves as the ultimate trap to lure the burglar out of hiding. This short story is the perfect cut with ALL its glitz, glamour and sexiness of the 1950's.

Ania is flawless and Jerome's brilliance shines even brighter in book #2.

Oh Ania what have you done...Book #3 coming soon. CAN'T WAIT

Strongly recommend the novella's be read in order.

This is the second novella in the To Catch a Leopard Series. This story is set in Venice. Jerome and Ania are trying to trap the famous burglar, The Leopard. However, the tale twists and Jerome is accused of a crime.

I did not enjoy this one as well as I did the first in this series. I believe it is because I found Ania to be a bit overbearing and spoiled. But, she and Jerome have a unique connection which adds so much to this story.

I also loved the Venice setting. The authors did a great job making it real for the reader. With the bad smells and the crumbling areas of the town, I felt like I was right there!

Need a quick mystery set in beautiful Venice…THIS IS IT! Grab your copy today!

I received this novel from the publisher for a honest opinion.

The Bait is the second of three novellas in the To Catch a Leopard series. Jewelry designer Ania Thorne, along with her romantic partner Jerome Curtis, is out for revenge against jewel thief The Leopard after his spectacular heist in Cannes. This time the action takes place in 1959 Venice about a year after the first story ends.

This is a fun series of novellas told in dual point of view and alternating chapters between Ania and Jerome. These two have an interesting dynamic and there's lots of opposite attract going on. The story involves glamor, intrigue and a cat and mouse game that continues in the next story. I'm looking forward to reading book 3 later this year.

Thank you to the publisher and Let's Talk Books Promo for my e-copy of this book.

Thank you so much to @mjroseauthor @getredprbooks @letstalkbookspromo for the complimentary review copy of The Bait so I could participate in this blog tour! The Bait came out on January 4, 2022.

The Bait is the second installment of Ania Thorne's story. Ania and Jerome are in Venice, working hard to recover the jewels that the leopard stole from her in Cannes the previous year.

I really enjoyed the way the story picked up in this installment. We had a front row seat to the glamour surrounding the people who buy Ania's jewelry.

I'm looking forward to reading the conclusion of this series when the third novella comes out in August 2022.

While reading The Bait, you feel like you are watching an old, glitz and glam movie picture in your head. I enjoyed the previous novel, the Heist for its contrasting duo romance and the glimpse into the elegant and classy lifestyle of how the rich lived in the 1950's.

It is a quick read that offers entertaining scenes and it moves quickly through each chapter - which is appreciated and keeps the story exciting.

It takes from the tried and true formula of heists with romance mixed in - fun and quick read! Plus, it's interesting to know that this is written by two authors collaborating together.

Thank you to Netgalley for the opportunity to read and review The Bait.

3.5 ⭐ stars for this novella. I really enjoyed this short, mystery by some of the best historical authors I've read. C W Gortner and M J Rose are back with the second novella in their mystery series.
It's a year later and Ania is looking to get revenge on the their known as the Leopard. She takes Jerome with her to Venice and they plot their revenge.
I thought the banter between the two characters was incredible. I was mesmerized by their witty conversations. Plus what an easy, short read too. I loved this novella. I'm excited for the next one in this series.
