By a USA Today bestselling author: Peabo, an ex-soldier finds himself on death's doorstep when he arrives at the sage's tower and his world is turned upside-down. The women at the tower are either going to kill him or turn him into a weapon this world hasn't seen in thousands of years.
For Peabo, he's not so sure that surviving is the better of the two options.
-------
Peabo is a former Special Forces soldier trapped in a world that isn't so different than the one he'd left. Except that in this world, some of the laws of physics seemed to have been tweaked. He's also known as a plainswalker, yet nobody seems to fully understand what that means.
In this world, there are a few people that have gifts that grow over time. And during the last handful of months, Peabo's strength and speed have increased to a new level. A level that brought with it the nosebleeds, and they are killing him.
On death's doorstep, Peabo is brought to a place called the sage's tower; a place known as a repository of ancient knowledge and where assassins are trained in the dark arts of their craft.
It is here where Peabo's world is turned upside-down.
THE SAGE'S TOWER is a story about a modern-day soldier coping with a situation that will either kill him or turn him into a weapon this world hasn't seen in thousands of years, if not longer.
For Peabo, he's not so sure that surviving is the better of the two options.
USA TODAY bestselling author, M.A. Rothman, is one of the most unlikely novelists you'll ever meet. He's an engineer first and foremost, with a background in the sciences, and somehow or another, this writing habit of his has turned into a bit more than just a run-of-the-mill hobby.
He primarily writes stories that focus on two things: technology and international intrigue. This writing tends to span the genres of science fiction, techno-thriller, and mainstream thrillers.
When not writing, he enjoys cooking, learning about new technology, travel, and spending time with his family.
So I rated this lower than the first novel. It’s still very clean, with no stats and only a cursory mention of ‘levels’.
My main difficulty is the pace of the narrative. It seems to be set on fast-forward. Portal travel, more than double his beginning levels, and amazing power all show up in this one. It felt somewhat like the author was trying to hit the necessary moments and get through to the end as expeditiously as possible.
I am not convinced this is headed in the right direction, but I may try the next book anyway. It’s very clean prose, and most other LitRPG is not.
I know quality when I come across it and I've definitely found it within these two books. I shall be reading other writings from Mr. Rothman to see if it is a fluke of this series or something found in everything he creates. I suspect the latter. Well done sir and I humbly ask for a quick continuation to this story.
I don't know about LitRPG, probably too old. But I do like scifi, miltary scifi and military fantasy, not that I put labels on them.
This was an interesting read right from gitgo. I do have to say I saw many parallels and much likeness to Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth series, and then several tollowons, like Power of Nines. It was one of my favorite series.
But good fun, lot of action, great characters both good and bad. I look foward to book three and what happens with Peabo. Thank you PS write fast
Mistakes: Very well written and edited. With how long it was between books one and two being published a recap would have been nice, but each book can stand on their own.
Plot: Learning of his power and just what he has been sent to do.
Characters: Good growth, however the game aspect doesn't really play much of a part and could be dropped from the story with no problem.
Excellent litrpg influenced fantasy with enough hard science to recall Larry niven
I enjoyed these books , good character development , fast paced story. I especially like the leavening of hard science and can't wait to see the third book , where I have a suspicion that many of the clues in the first two books will be combined. I'm doubtful whether this universe can grow to rival the tales of known space and the ringworld , but I think I has the possibility
Enjoyable read as the protagonist learns more about what he can do and his purpose. The story telling continues to be disjointed and the blend of sci-fi still makes the gaming mechanism out of place. The overall story developing is a good one that is reminiscent of Lustbader’s. Dawn Warrior series. I still enjoy the fantasy-science, but it doesn’t mesh as well as the way the author would like. (Anyone else feel the RA Salvatore ripoff?)
Nice story blending fantasy, science fiction, and science fact.
Great mix of fantasy, science fiction ,and science fact. Postulate a few tweaks to how matter and energy interact and your "magic" becomes just slightly altered science. Sort of. Rothman handles the bleeding well with an interesting story. Can't wait for book 3.
How deeply does the rot exist in this world? Were the allies of the Darkness always such? Or have they been corrupted over time? Is Bo unique, or is he simply the one Plainswalker who progressed far enough along to qualify for the ‘prophecy’? How will his actions, going forward, impact everything that brought him up to this point?
The first book was well done, but this one is better. The world building is excellent, which is the most I can say without spoilers. I really enjoyed this book, and am eagerly awaiting the next book.
Much like the first book, this was another awesome book. I can’t wait for the next one. I like the unique twist on litRPG and the fact that it isn’t another harem adventure like all the others on Amazon.
How dare you write so well and then leave? Thank you for writing so well and hiring a good editor or team of editors. I eagerly await book three so I can consume it in two to three days and be left dying for more.
Loved the book. The MC becomes much stronger. And back story is expanded further. Like the first book MC is likable and is smart. His approach is logical and relatable. Eagerly waiting for book 3
Wonderful continuation to The Plainswalker series. I echo comments that it really is a perfect blend of true science, sci-fi and fantasy. Very enjoyable.
Yeah, this one just got weird. I was going to mark it DNF until I realized I had actually finished reading it. It looks like we're going to be time traveling for the next book. I expect I'll pass
Such a fun series. As a gamer, you see the elements but they are woven in seamlessly. I would recommend this to anyone looking for an entertaining read.
