An unwanted kiss. A girl on the run. A young sorcerer in the way. When fifteen-year-old Bree meets one of Zahn’s students, Connell, she is surprised to find a budding friendship with him. In their one day together, they will spend time in the Sleeping Tree, a protective oak that hides those who need to keep away from prying eyes. A Light Chaser Origins short story of 16 pages.
I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review...here it is: Bree is older in this second origin story...and is being chased by hooligans who want to cause trouble for her (and for all girls, apparently). Their problem is that she's not a typical girl or an easy victim. After defending herself against the angry young men, who are among the wealthy, she is chased by lawmen...after all, she's not well-connected (or connected at all) and is not allowed to retalliate against the squad of rich kids. She escapes to her sanctuary--the sleeping tree--where she's safe and hidden. Much to her surprise, someone else can see through the magic of the tree and she meets Connell, an apprentice studying under the sorceror, Zahn. Read to learn of their connection and adventures...it's a wonderful story!
A delightful novella! Bree seems to attract trouble at every turn or should I say, trouble seems to find Bree! She has her magic to defend herself, but it's forbidden. At the risk of being evicted, Bree has no choice but to use her magic to ward off the bullies after her. She finds refuge in the Sleeping Tree, which keeps her safe. I loved the introduction of Connell and Chadwick! This is the beginning of getting to know this wonderful character. The banter between them is beautiful, as is the instinctive trust she feels for Connell. A quick but informative read. Lovely!
