Ludovic Stone was the arms-bearer and right-hand of Archmage Alastor an Ulbrecht and Sorceress Lianna; protecting them throughout the years from political threats and standing by their side through the hardships they faced due to their stature.
A failed assassination attempt against Lianna prompted Alastor to act and perform a grievous ritual to tap onto the power of the Void, the dark forces beyond the universe. Has he betrayed his friends and family to gain power? Can Lianna stop Alastor before it’s too late? Will she and Ludovic be able to save the world from the evil warlock he has become? What if it was all just a lie?
This short read drew me in quickly, making me wonder about Ludovic and if this was going to be another 'chosen one' book where the unlikely kid becomes the hero. It wasn't, and that made me happy. Ludovic is an important side character to the larger plot of this story where magic and wizards are fighting and the world is at stake.
I got surprised, and a disturbed at one turn, and need to know what exactly happened to a certain character. There are darker tones here, and messing with forces you shouldn't. That said, it was an immersive read and I quite enjoyed Ludovic's staunch loyalty and integrity.
I'd love to read the first book and see if it continues in this strain. I saw that it's set in a more present day setting, so who knows?
content: Language: None. Violence: mild to moderate. There's some creepy dark magic going on, so if that unsettles you, may want to stay away. People get stabbed/poisoned/burned up. For me it was more psychological than graphic. Sexual: None.
A clean, short 30-minute read prequelling a YA epic action-adventure series.
Ludovic takes the position of arms-bearer to powerful mages who break with tradition and treat everyone equal. As one would expect from rule-breakers, years later they break more rules and do something heinous. All the nasty bits are cleanly skimmed over in the story, so it’s positive middle grade material. The title is a misnomer, though, since it’s not actually about The Void, but more about the genesis of The Vessel Stone - that’s why 4⭐️. It’s a good intro to the series, very easy to read, giving a backdrop to how and what and why happened.
An informative prequel to The Stone Legacy series; however, it should be read afterward. Ludovic Stone was the arms-bearer and right-hand of Archmage Alastor an Ulbrecht and Sorceress Lianna. When Alastor betrays his wife, daughter, and the world, Ludovic is called upon to foster the protectors of the Vessel Stone. This title fills in some of the details that the series omits. I recommend you read it only if you have already finished the series.
Action-packed. Easy-to-read. Entertaining. Great world building. Informative. Scary. Tragic. Twisted. Unpredictable. Wonderful characters.
Great set up for The Stone Legacy Series. Ludovic comes to Lianna and Alastor as a young boy of 18 to be their arms bearer. He is to protect them with his life if the need arises. Over the time of a couple years, we see his change from a boy to a man and the legacy he will have to fulfill.
It's a very short prequel that seems to have a lot of significant scenes. The scenes obviously matter in the rest of the series but maybe one or two could have been omitted from this short book.
