The leatherboy Handbook III

Rate this book
This is the third edition of The leatherboy Handbook. Now with over 100 pages of new and expanded content from the previous editions. Re-written to be gender-neutral, with updated advice and suggestions, this leatherboy handbook is sure to be worth getting an updated copy for any leatherboy library.

To go from an unsure "leather-interested person" to a fully evolved leatherboy is one of the hardest things a person can do in life. For some, you are coming out for the second time. But that is not the end of the journey for many people. The quest is never-ending, and the road is full of strange things, places, and lots of questions. In many cases, the road forks, and we take turns that could ultimately lead to a happy or horrible situation. This book will discuss the history surrounding the leather world, with newly added leatherboy-specific history. Even though this book was originally written from a gay perspective, please do not assume it can benefit only gay males. Sexual gender has NOTHING to do with being a leatherboy - as you will learn in this book, the same lessons apply to sexual orientation. Mind you, some dynamics may be altered, but the rules and reasons remain the same. This book will give you the tools and insight into the alternative sexual world of the leatherboy and the pointers you will need to succeed. For those interested in content about being a Dominant and still provides this continued insight into leatherboys or submissives, we recommend you get a copy of The Leather and BDSM Handbook by Vince Andrews. This book was primarily designed for leatherboys and submissives.

As a relatively freshfaced leatherboy, i was assigned this book by my BOSS to read as part of my training while under consideration for His collar. As a set-text, this, book provides a wealth of information that aims to comprehensively cover the basics of a life in service as a leatherboy.

The historical information ranges from commonly understood and basic to quite niche, and i found the discussion of "Old Guard" as concept as opposed to a specific movement informative and engaging.

i also appreciated the more detailed dissections of ideas like RACK and SSC (as these are often mentioned but rarely full explained) and the extensive attention given to scene and partnership negotiation, as this provides a practical basis to build on for my future encounters.

That being said, like many self-published non-fiction works on kink, fetish and BDSM, the prose is oppressively dry, and the grammar lacking. It is quite a challenging read, as large sections feel like an endurance challenge rather than a flowing stream of information.

I also found the clunky re-editing to introduce gender neutral language rather grating. i understand and applaud the effort in theory, but it feels like an afterthought in its implementation, as well as somewhat antithetical to large portions of the book. The perspective of the author is clearly that of a gay man, and the culture referenced often specifically relates to gay male Leather culture. This makes the gender neutral language feel quite forced and out-of-place in many passages. To create a more effective gender-neutral version of the handbook, i think a more intentional overhaul would be required - and i feel that this would warrant a separate publication, as it would run counter to vital sections of this book.

it's got a lot of good info, but riddled with formatting issues, typos, and grammatical errors. writing style often changes and sometimes it's hard to tell if he's addressing boys or Daddies. kind of surprised it was published in this condition, but still worth the read for anyone interested in pursuing a leatherboy path.
