Bewitched in Blood

Rate this book
I escaped death once and now the demon is back to claim my soul. The only thing standing between us is a hellhound shifter who sets my body and heart on fire…

Blood witch Topaz should be dead. She evaded the demon monster once before, with the help of the Fae Winter Court. But now the soul collector is back on the hunt and she is firmly in his sights.

Hellhound shifter Kyan's pack owes the blood witch’s family a debt. He’s there not to kill Topaz, but to protect her from his former Otherworld masters.

But how can she trust the man with the intense green eyes—the man who ignites her body with molten heat and sets her heart fluttering—when the hellhound genes Kyan carries in his veins are the same as the creatures she’s been running from?

Will the man who has stolen her heart, also take her life?

A steamy paranormal fantasy romance, edgy and dark, perfect for fans of K.F. Breene, Dannika Dark, Jaymin Eve and Linsey Hall.

BEWITCHED IN BLOOD is the first instalment in Jen Katemi’s contemporary, adult HELLHOUND PROTECTORS paranormal romance series, set in the author’s BLOOD FAE CHRONICLES world. This is twenty-three year old mage/witch Topaz, and Hellhound shifter Kyan’s story line.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Kyan and Topaz) BEWITCHED IN BLOOD follows Kyan as he is ‘tasked’ to locate and protect our story line heroine but all does not go according to plan when Kyan finds himself injured, and the woman he is supposed to protect, is protecting our story line hero. Hoping to save the woman with whom he will fall in love, Kyan brings Topaz to meet his Pack but Topaz refuses the sanctuary in an effort to locate her cousins, Amethyst and Sapphire, two witches who may also be targeted in the upcoming attack against our story line heroine. What ensues is the building relationship between Kyan and Topaz, and the potential fall-out as Topaz’s past demands reparations and payment for the loss of a soul.

Kyan knows that his true identity may place him in the direct line of fire, an identity that may also threaten the members of his pack. Forced to locate our story line heroine, Kyan is instantly attracted to the woman he believes to be his mate, a woman whose very presence goes against the supernatural order. Topaz suspects she is the target of the monster from H*ll, a monster who has come to claim, for all eternity, our story line heroine but Topaz refuses to give up, and with the help of her cousins, Kyan and his pack, Topaz lives to fight another day.

The relationship between Kyan and Topaz is one of immediate attraction. Kyan’s appearance in Topaz’s life is not by accident but he remains by her side for reasons of his own. Topaz knows there is something different about our story line hero but when secrets are revealed, Topaz must chose between head and heart knowing that their lives hang in the balance. The $ex scenes are intimate and seductive without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

We are introduced to Topaz cousins Amethyst and Sapphire, as well as Kyan’s Alpha Burley, and demon Luthor.

BEWITCHED IN BLOOD is a quick read; a story of family and relationships, betrayal and power, obsession, magic and control. The fast paced premise is dramatic, intriguing and edgy; the characters are animated and spirited; the romance is energetic and intense. BEWITCHED IN BLOOD ends on a happily ever after-for now-there is still more story to come.

Just when I thought my TBR pile couldn't get any higher I've discovered another new to me author. A local, even better perhaps one day our paths will cross.
This was an interesting world this author has created. Witches and hellhounds, that's a new kind of shifter for me. I was invested in these characters from the beginning. Topaz and her cousins are powerful witches in their own right, but bring on the power of three...sorry, it was my fave tv show. Anyway, goddess help anyone who tries to do them wrong. As for Kyan, well what is he? She knows he was different, I was rooting for dragon...so wrong, as I didn't read the blurb hehe. Great action packed, entertaining story, I'll be looking forward to more from this author.

A few things at the beginning had me saying to myself, "yeah right," but I'm glad I stuck this one out. Great fantasy story with the right amount of action and romance.

Bewitched In Blood (Hellhound Protectors book 1)

2022 Grade B-

Another person was reading this in a FB bookclub, so I checked it out on Amazon where the Kindle version was free. This is what I call hard fantasy- witches, shifters, demons, hellhounds, fighting, and general nastiness. It is also a dark romance and graphically erotic in places. The prose is first person present tense and a little clumsy in my opinion. My brain kept shifting into editing mode and wanting to fix occasional wording. Sometimes I wish I had never learned to edit. The story was good enough so I knew from the start I would to finish the book, but the amount of speed reading kept increasing all the way to the end. Definitely worth a try if you like this genre but not my thing.

I like urban fantasy with powerful protagonists being hunted by some other wordly thing or demon or whateves. It makes for interesting reading most of the time. This tends to fall under Urban Fantasy and when the protagonist is a woman the romance always comes out, for some reason. I mean, seriously, does every woman protagonist have to fall in love with the first guy we meet in every book? This is why I like LGBTQ protagonist, at least in most of them the characters get to meet, get to know each other and fall in love as a part of the over all story, not instantaniously. Take Priory of the Orange Tree, it's clear that the central protagonists fell in love as part of each other's character and the over all plot, not as soon as they met they're getting all hot and bothered by each other every single time. Now why does this bug me so much?

Here's the typical read from these kinds of books "The giant (monster, demon, zombie, Kiaju) is running towards them ready to tear them apart, bite their heads off, or steal the McGuffin that will end all of life the universe and everything, and (woman protagonist) turns to her male companion and can't help noticing how sexy his eyes are, how broad his chest is, how his hair makes her got all weak and wet inside." WTF. There's a (insert monster) coming after you, ready to murder you, your children, you little dog Toto, and you have time to get turned on by the dude who might die with you.

This happens in the 1sr, the 2nd, the 3rd chapter of the book. But let's be fair, while being attacked and chased both the woman and man protagonists have all the time in the world to be overly horny for each other. I'm not kidding. Every other sentence is all like "I notice how sexy his smile is." or "I'm already jealous other men are looking at her." I wish I was joking. I got tired of that inner monologue after the sixth chapter and just put the book down and went on to something else.

I'm not against romance, but why do writers not understand time and place? There's a time and place for everything. Hanging from a mountain while vampire bat demons are trying to rip your eyes out, and you're trying to get your magic sword that's hanging from your toes back in hand to have a chance of fighting them off is not the time to notice that you companion has a nice body. And yet, I've read this scenario about a billion times in about a thousand novels. It always has me rolling my eyes when it happens because I'm always like "HELLO!, the King of the Vampires is about to rip out your throat, could we save the uncontrollable horny for when you're in high school, please?

And this book had a very interesting premise. An old enemy whose some kind of demon lord is hunting a powerful blood witch and a pack of (I never got the chance to find out what they were) shifters send one of their best to protect her for some mysterious reason, and you cousins who are also your best friends and coven, might be in danger too. That's a great premise. That's a great start. But reading line after line of the protagonists being unreasonably horny for each other, especially when they're in a dangerous situation and there isn't much time for that drove me crazy so I could not finish this book. I want to read urban fantasy, not a 12,000 word long Penthouse letter.

This was a random borrow from my local library, because I’d been wanting to check out this author’s work. It gets off to a rather slow start … there is action almost right off the bat, but the story takes longer than it needs to to say things, if that makes sense. Everything takes a while to get to the point, it feels a bit drawn out, despite frequent bursts of action. While the action scenes tend to be life or death, I just don’t find them exciting. It’s all depicted as rather matter-of-fact.

With lots of mystery surrounding this plot and lots of potential for an addictive world, I tried very much to be excited, but just felt bored. More than halfway in, I was still waiting to get excited and it never really picked up from there.

Sexual tension: there’s lots of it, as told to the reader, I didn’t really feel it, as I do when I read really well-written characters who are all twisted over each other. I’m not sure this is a strength of this author. His attraction to her is mentioned as an afterthought … hers isn’t mentioned at all, yet then abruptly they’re semi-ravishing one another, then they suddenly stop and … that’s it for a time. Then one’s attraction to the other is casually mentioned again and it goes on like that, for a bit, until she orders him to basically just do what he wants and get it over with … they do and it’s not hot at all, and I feel like I’ve read this exact scene before in a billion other books. Sort of dull, very cliché. This book would not really lose anything if these tiny bits were removed, I think.

Based on this read, I’d be open to exploring more from this author, but I don’t feel a need to read on in this series/world—I think I’ve seen enough and I’m just not excited about it. I feel the author’s strength may lie more in world-building than actual writing, but the writing sometimes comes with time.

Overall:
This was okay. 2.5 stars.

Audio
I listened to the audiobook, the production was seamless. The narrator doesn’t have the best voice, but not bad by any means. One narrator for both leads, and she attempts to differ the voices a bit but doesn’t do it well. It often took me a few sentences into a switch to figure out whose POV I was in. 3-star performance. 5-star production.

I DNF'd 15% through. I have no true review, only my reaction to the first 15%:

She might now be queen alongside her new husband, King Rhodri, but Maewen is determined to maintain her job as a detective in the human realm for as long as she can. That means suppressing her banshee power, at least during the times she is here in the human world and working for the Supernatural Police.

This sounds so stupid.....is it like Zootopia? What is happening here????

My mind keeps creeping back to a time and place it doesn’t want to revisit in my memories. Last time the ether was ‘out of kilter’, as Ammie calls it, I almost died. Although my cousins know part of the story, they are not privy to everything. They both know the Winter Fae saved my life—and that the act caused some kind of imbalance in the etheric energies. They don’t know the Fae used old magic to save me. Old magic, especially when wielded by Fae warriors, is the most powerful of all the magics. Surely, its protection couldn’t have failed now. Could it?

At 3% we now know that she is the imbalance...No mystery, plot is laid bare. Not going to be interesting now.

The gateways between the realms are stable. The Fae Winter Court might have given everyone a little wobble there for a while, with the previous King Tryppton losing his mind and his evil queen, Rhodri’s mother Rhiannon, threatening the Accord Agreement that keeps all supernatural beings and magic users safe and responsible here in the human world. But the new King Rhodri, and his half-human, half-banshee detective bride, Maewen, are at the helm of the Winter Court now. Even though Mae spends half her time here in the city working as a senior inspector in SUDAP, things have become remarkably calm.

I feel like I missed a whole series? What did I miss????

Topaz is a mystery, on many levels. She is also one hot-ass woman, with her long dark hair falling casually down past her shoulders, her luscious curves that she doesn’t seem to be aware of, and those sea-green eyes that spear me with cool disdain.

O god, she's not like other girls!!!!

Topaz gets a cryptic warning from her sister that she thinks she might be in danger. So Topaz strengthens the wards around her home. So when a man collapses in her yard, she's not sure whether to leave him there or to bring him inside and help him. Being the nice person she is, she decides to bring him inside but since he's so big she has to use a little witchy magic to help get him inside. Once she helps him and he wakes up, she sure is glad she helped the very large hottie who was sent by a shifter pack to help her. But since shifters and witches don't usually get along, she's curious why the pack would want to help her and why. This question isn't answered until later and it sure was a good reason and gave us some insight into her and her family.

Kyan is sent by his alpha to make sure Topaz is safe from the demon who is hunting her. But when the demon unleashes hellhounds on them, Kyan is able to fight them without even shifting into his animal form. Topaz can't figure out what kind of shifter he is and he's not telling her...yet. He doesn't want to scare her away and wants her to trust him so telling her that he's also a hellhound is probably not the thing to do right away. But we all know the truth will come out at some point and most people are going to be more mad about being lied to even if it's by omission.

As secrets come to light, old debts are paid and the sisters come together to fight the demon, Kyan and Topaz are also fighting their growing feelings for each other. I loved Kyan's pack and am looking forward to getting to know more of them.

This was an adrenaline rush from the very beginning of the book, right to the end. I had so much fun reading this book and am looking forward to reading more of this series now.

I love the world Jen Katemi has created in which the supernatural creatures live in the human world, the world we had first encountered in the banshee series. This series is about three cousins who are witches, and this is the story of Topaz who had escaped death through the winter fae court's intervention leaving Luthor, the soul collector, still out to get what he felt he had been cheated from. When he sends his hellhounds for her, Kyan, a shifter comes to protect her, but the wards around her house leave him sprawled naked on her lawn. She learns that his pack owe her family a debt and that shifters always look out for their own and honour their debts. However as she becomes more involved with Kyan, falling for him so badly, she fears this stranger may be as much of a danger to her as those who are hunting her. Amethyst her cousin, definitely thinks so but then she had not been there when he nearly lost his life saving hers not once but twice already. Topaz could not get herself to fear or hate Kyan, somehow she knew he was the one fated to become her mate and that he would always place her safety first. With her cousins and his pack by her side they stood a chance of defeating Luthor. I love the dark, hot romantic paranormal shifter romance and the kick ass witch heroine, Topaz who risked everything to save those she loved. I look forward to reading Amethyst and Sapphire's stories in the near future.

Finished this in one sitting woah! Definitely loved the witch and shifter romance, the plot felt interesting and the action that we saw from the start kept me on the edge of my seat. I would've liked to see more of a backstory of the three cousins together, but even the glimpses that we got to see were still very cute and they reminded me of Charmed and a bit of Practical Magic.

Spoilers ahead!

I was very confused that Topaz and Kyan never discussed them being mates? He never brought it up, and she had mentioned it in a sentence but they never spoke about it, I was surprised that she even thought of it. Not sure if this world has pre-destined mates, I assumed that it did but now I'm not so sure. Also the fight scene with Luthor was very unclear, I read about him weakening and I became confused because it didn't seem like Topaz had struck him yet, I had to go back and reread it and was still confused, felt like I had a paragraph missing or something. Elemental magic was also difficult to understand, I couldn't quite understand how or from where Topaz drew her power from and why it had no consequences on her when it did for her mom and aunt.
Despite all this confusion I still really enjoyed the story. I do wish the characters were more fleshed-out, especially Topaz and Kyan, but for a 200 page book I really can't complain much, it did super well with how long it was.

Topaz, a blood witch, essentially died whilst trying to practice when she was younger but the Fae saved her life, unfortunately a demon soul collector was on hand to collect her soul when the Fae saved her and he was less than thrilled to lose her. She always knew there would be a time when he came for her and when her cousin, Ammie, calls her to tell her to be careful as there is some kind of disturbance she, for some reason, takes it far too lightly but strengthens the wards around her business and house anyway. That night when her wards are triggered she happens to find the hottest man she has ever, who just happens to be a shifter of some kind, seen injured in her garden. She drags him into the house and uses her magic to aid his healing. When he awakes Kyan tells her he has been sent by his Alpha to protect her. When they are attacked they go on the run and what follows is a tale of danger, passion, humour, family loyalty, danger and adventure. But when Topaz learns Kyan’s secret will she ever be able to forgive him for hiding his true nature? I loved the characters are superbly crafted and the story kept me enthralled from start to finish. I cannot wait to see where the author takes this series as it promises to be incredibly exciting.

This is for the most part a fast-paced action paranormal, witch/shifter romance. Topaz is a blood witch whose soul a demon feels is theirs due to her almost dying in the past. Kyan/Ky is a shifter hell-hound whose job is to protect Topaz.

There is instant chemistry between Topaz and Ky, both try to suppress it and concentrate on keeping Topaz alive. Ky has a secret and we all know how well keeping secrets work out in these types of situations.

The pacing is good, there are some predictable moments in the storyline. Topaz is not a wait to be rescued type of a witch. She is a take charge and kick all hell-hounds back to the underworld type of a witch.

When she meets up with her two cousins ,Amethyst and Sapphire these ladies are a power to behold and they take no prisoners. We learn more about Topaz’s past and also more about Kyan. There are hints dropped along the way of fae and other fantasy creatures that may show up in the other books.

There are steamy bits, dark and gnarly bits, and loads of butt kicking, with characters you care about.

First book in a new series set in the same world as the Banshee sister series. In this one we meet witch Topaz, who has attracted the attention of a soul collecting demon for reasons that unfold with the story. She also manages to collect a mysterious shifter protector, Ky who she isn't sure she can trust although the attraction between them is intense & he sure turns out handy saving her life more than once. I liked how Topaz was powerful in her own right. She doesn't stand around waiting to be saved but carries her own weight and returns the favour saving Ky's life a time or 2 as well. I also liked the bond between Topaz and her cousins Amethyst & Sapphire and the little glimpses we get of their childhood. It is a fairly quick read and Ky & Topaz get their resolution but there is plenty left to explore in the next book with Topaz's cousin Amethyst.

I accidentally read this book because of Alexa. I was trying to get Alexa to read to me on my Echo while I cleaned my house, but she opened up this book instead of the one I wanted because the names were similar. I decided to give this book a chance since it is about witches and hellhounds, I have been wanting to read more paranormal romances and I did enjoy it. I do feel like it was a little too short and that the characters lacked development. This is the first book that I have read from this author, so I do not know if you meet the characters in this book in her other books or not. I felt that the relationship between Topaz and Kyan was too fast, and it mentioned that Kyan knew she was his mate but did not seem as if Topaz was aware of that. The book ended rather abruptly with many unanswered questions which maybe they get answered in the next book since this is a series. I have not decided if I will continue with the series or not.

We enter the world of Topaz, a witch, who is self reliant, takes charge and waits for no one to solve her problems. With that being said no one can truly do it on their own, and those who were sent to stop her now have to protect her the story takes a turn. Here is we’re Kyan, a hellhound, enters. There are emotions and feelings that grow between our characters but can those feelings be trusted? Topaz has cousin witches who join her journey that warn Topaz of her feelings and put doubt between a budding romance but that doesn’t stop that romance from becoming a full fledge part of the story. With danger, magic, sex and family you don’t know what to expect next. Overall I am please with this book and cannot to wait to read the next in the series!

Jen Katemi always writes action packed, romantic stories and this one is about Topaz a witch who escaped death clutches with the help of the Fae Winter Court and is hunted by a demon, Luthor, for her soul and Kyan, hellhound shifter who is protecting her. This starts a new series of cousin witches; Topaz, Amethyst, and Sapphire with their own hellhound shifter protector. Kyan and his pack is going against his kind protecting her because he owes Topaz's family a debt. Will Luthor get Topaz's soul? I loved the characters introduced (They were detailed and engaging.), the romance was steamy, and the storyline was a engaging read. This does end in a "little" cliffhanger into the next book in this series. I volunteer to read and review this enjoyable ARC I received from Booksprout.

This was a fun read, and relatively quick. As the start of a new series, that works because it introduces the readers to the main players and links back to previous characters/events from the prior, related series. While this can be confusing for anyone who has not read the previous series, it's easy enough to read Bewitched in Blood without that prior knowledge. Topaz was a good MC - she was not afraid to rescue herself and others too. I liked that she was not the typical "damsel in distress". The other characters have distinct personalities and "voices" and add much to the storyline. There is plenty of action and adventure that kept me turning pages until the end. I am happily awaiting book two.

Incredibly awkward smut. Usually, a shortcoming like this is not a big deal but the problem in this case is that there really isn't much beyond the central romance and sexual tension. So without the smut working this book has no proper climax to offer (no pun intended).
Because the story is set in an already established world the surroundings feel somewhat fleshed out at least. However, the author uses very little of this framework. The core concept here is for the two protagonists to be forced into proximity to each other by circumstance while not being able to act on their desire for each other. Yes, it's one of the quintessential standard paranormal romance plots without anything more to offer.
The actual story is so bad it doesn't deserve mention.

The male lead, Kyan, was a beautiful mix of attracted insecurity and alpha confidence in his dealings with the female lead, Topaz. As a human witch, she was understandably afraid of a shifter who could more than destroy her. Watching them overcome their mutual fears was a huge part of this story as well as setting the scene for a face off against demon(s) in future stories.

The story was dual POV, well written, and a good introduction to the series. It does stand alone but I feel a solid grasp of the world would be built if the Banshee series is read first.

I really enjoyed this book! There was action almost right from the start to keep you hooked right from the get-go! A few things are hinted at throughout the story that you don’t get to fully know until the last few chapters and I really enjoyed that it kept me guessing, “what could they be talking about?!” The book ends with some new drama that will be addressed in the next book.
I fully recommend this book!
There’s a sister trilogy that you might want to read first as the happenings of them are referenced a few times but I didn’t and had no problem following the story.

This is my first book by Jen Katemi and the story was very interesting. It has a lot of action and drama. It is part of another series were they share some of the same world. But, this one didn’t make me feel like I couldn’t read it since I didn’t read the other series. It does hint at the other series and makes me want to read it but doesn’t take away from this one. The characters are stunningly developed and the personalities of the characters are magnificent. It is definitely a fantastic story that is very worth reading.

Bewitched in Blood by Jen Katemi is the first book in her brand new fast-paced and exciting paranormal series, Hellhound Protectors. As with previous books by this author, I was instantly drawn into the intriguing web of supernatural creatures and their need for chaos and mayhem. Ms Katemi writes powerful, creative, action-packed and sensually intense stories so, there is definitely no sunshine and roses here. An edgy storyline and interesting and passionate characters made this a fabulous start to a series I’m sure will be addictive.

Topez is a witch with a problem that only Kyan, a hellhound, can fix. The book follows the two as they navigate a world where everything seems to be against them.

This is an interesting read that is enjoyable but early in the novel, and then throughout the rest of the novel, some things are referenced that are not explained until the very end which makes for a frustrating read. These references refer to things that occurred in previous books by this author and if you have not read these books you are lost.

A good book but a similar story to many other stories out there.

This is a NON-SPOILER REVIEW of Bewitched in Blood by Jen Katemi. This is the first book in the Hellhound Protectors series. I enjoyed this read, but despite the slow feeding of past events I still felt like I missed part of the backstory. The characters are strong and likeable with a story that is entertaining. A different take on shifters, for sure. There is a lot of action, a little drama, strong emotional moments and the read moves quickly. Some steamy sex makes this a Mature Readers Only read. While there is a little resolution, this book does set up for a second book.

This honest and voluntary review was made possible by obtaining a copy through Booksprout.

I loved this book. The story was great. Character building was well done.

I could not put it down once I started Reading. I was holding my breath as I read the fight sect. I hoped I knew what the outcome would be ... but I was never sure! There are so many twists that I could not see coming.

I highly recommend this book... now I am off to read the rest of the series!!

Bewitched in Blood

“Who are you?” - Topaz

Nothing to see here... Just your every day, mundane, minding-her-own-business gemstone wielding blood witch.... who is suddenly in horrific danger.... Demonic evil from her past is coming for her....

Let’s do this, Ky. Together.”- Topaz

If you are looking for sunshine, unicorns and rainbows, you're reading the wrong book! Intense, scorching hot action from page one! Loved it!

I really enjoyed this!

It had all the feels, mixed with heat and action.

I loved the fact that Kyan stayed true to Topaz, even after she doubted him and sent him away. He was determined to protect her, in spite of her lack of faith in what they had shared.

Thid is a love story that crosses all boundaries, and leads to a world I want to visit again!
