All they had to do was catch him.

At first, it was just another case, just another serial killer to stop. They had done it countless times before; this time shouldn’t have been any different, but soon days turned into weeks. Desperation set in, and the victims started getting younger. What were they missing? Why couldn’t they save the victims? They would have given their own lives to stop the monster, to finally put an end to his killing spree. In the end, they almost succeeded.

But then, eight months ago, everything went wrong.

From the aftermath of one monster, a new one is born; a killer more lethal than they could have possibly imagined, like something ripped straight out of their worst nightmares. With it comes a new potential victim struggling with the skeletons in her own closet and the guilt of past mistakes. The longer she waits for the new monster to find her, to kill her, the more she questions if, deep down, she wants him to.

The desperate hunt for a serial killer, an ex-soldier losing his grip on reality, and a victim who’s not sure she’s worth saving come together as past and present intertwine, in this explosive psychological thriller that begs the question:

Can you stop a monster without becoming one?

"The truth is, most killers appear the same as everyone else, sometimes even more so, because they have spent so much time faking it, so much time hiding their true nature, sometimes even from themselves."

Shade is the new crime thriller by Chad Nicholas, available on October 5, 2021. I did receive a copy of the ARC to read and provide an honest review.

If you prefer video format for reviews, I do have a spoiler free review on my YouTube channel that you can see here: https://youtu.be/fNW3B9bq3lc

Shade had some big shoes to fill after I read and loved Nightmare last year, which is Chad Nicholas's debut novel. I went into it with high expectations - but I do have to confess that Nightmare continues its reign as my favorite. (for now...)

I *loved* the way this story started - we are thrown right into the heat of the hunt, the suspense, threat of danger and immense dread that set upon was immediate. I was hooked immediately and knew I would be flying through this one, and I wasn't wrong.

We meet Agent Jack Diamond who works for the FBI tracking down and apprehending serial killers. He and his partner Shade are on the hunt for The Surgeon when things take an unexpected turn, which monkey wrenches that investigation and leads to a hunt for a NEW killer. I will admit these first few chapters confused me because we did start in the past, jump to the present, then into flashbacks. Once I got myself straightened out and able to tell the difference, that didn't happen again for the rest of the book.

This crime story was filled with violence, gore, twists and turns that no matter how hard you look for, you never see coming. I will say that there is some serious suspension of belief required - Shade is a book that has a lot of action that is reminiscent of the movie John Wick and then some things that just don't seem possible like the Fast & Furious franchise. Does that mean you won't enjoy it? Let me just tell you I read this sucker in 3 sittings over a night and the next day. I also think it was really forgiving in how the FBI works - there were some things that were allowed that I had a hard time believing would pass - maybe a plot device to move the story forward - but I was squinting a bit going....no way that would happen. lol

Chad's prose is on the more easy to read, simple side of things so you aren't going to get sidetracked with it - you will 100% be caught up in the characters and their survival and attempt to catch the killer that seems intent on taking out however many people it takes to release him from the hallucinations that plagues him. Don't let that easy to read prose fool you - Nicholas is extremely clever - he has a way of hiding information in plain sight that is such a delight when you get to the revelation.

Absolutely cannot wait for the next one - Chad Nicholas writes crack in book form and I am so addicted.

2 out of 5 stars!

Shade is a non-stop action packed thriller... so hold on to your seat.

What I particularly enjoyed was the hunt for the serial killer and the mystery behind that storyline.
I just wish there was a little more focus on that since we are constantly going in between two timelines.

The rest of the novel is reminiscent of a superhero vigilante movie in the vain of The Punisher, which unfortunately is not my thing. But that's okay, I'm not the right audience for this one.

I read Chad Nicolas' first novel, Nightmare, which was more my speed. I just prefer more of the slow, quieter, character driven stories. But you can definitely tell Chad had fun writing this novel and put a lot of heart and soul into it.

So if you're into the intense, violent, action-packed FBI story with themes of former military suffering from PTSD, then this is definitely the story for you.

* * * I want to thank Chad Nicholas for providing me with a digital ARC in exchange for my honest review. * * *

4.5/5.
I was sent an advanced copy of this in exchange for an honest review. I'll have a larger review on my YouTube channel, Books of Blood. What I will say here is that Shade works not only as detective-thriller-serial killer novel but as a tale of twisting psychological horror that can be mentioned in the same breath as David Fincher's "Seven" and Michael Slade's debut novel, "Headhunter". In other words Holy Sh*t what a book!

“something was waiting for them inside the forest, within the trees. Something they wouldn’t be able to escape from.”

I usually provide a short summary on the books I review but to be honest the synopsis does an amazing job of describing the gist of Shade.

I loved the way Chad describes the scenes yet leaves a little room for your imagination to run wild.

Not to mention the PTSD representation is fairly accurate compared to other books I’ve read.

True Crime & Thrillers novels are some of my all time favorites so going into this I had pretty high expectations. I can honestly say, it didn’t disappoint. Some of the choices the main characters made were a little far fetched but all makes sense once you read the ending.

If you like true crime, action, and creepy atmospheres I’d consider picking up this book.

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review. This book comes out on October 5th but is currently on preorder for 25% off ebook and 15% off of hardcover & paperback.

Plot Twist Master!

My video review
https://youtu.be/l7vOU74BzNk

Great pacing for a crime thriller. Extremely flawed characters with perfect believeable. Anguish, grief and fear that you can feel.
Severe PTSD and despair.
TWISTED AND VIVID VIOLENT SCENES!

Lots of blood! Loved that!

The whole time I'm thinking how perfect this would be in graphic novel form!

The story itself had a lot of depth and great consistency. A plot that was strong and writing that is only getting better.

If you want to pick up a book that is literally going to take you on a ride that you're not gonna even know how to get off of pick this up!

...Something was waiting for them inside the forest, withing the trees. Something they wouldn't be able to escape from.

First of all, thanks to Chad Nicholas for sending me an ARC for review.

Shade is the second book by Chad Nicholas, the author of Nightmare. I had already heard incredible things of Nightmare so I couldn't help myself to accept reviewing this one.

We have an addictive thriller in our hands. It all starts with a great intro sequence, where we follow a group of agents, chasing down someone, who we will later discover, is another agent who has go rogue and turned into a potential serial killer.

Isn't this already enough to hook you? Because the premise is fantastic

The strongest points of this book definitely reside on its pace and storytelling. You will be hooked from page one, because of the way Nicholas is able to guide you throughout the story, you will have the urge to turn the next page.
Also, obviously no spoilers, but it's been a while since a thriller was able to surprise me with a great twist.
You will understand character motivations perfectly and you will definitely be attached to these characterized by the final page. AND DON'T FORGET THE GORE BECAUSE, OH BABY, IS THERE GORE!

I would have to say that the beginning might be a little confusing because of several time jumps due to the fact, that we follow two different timelines and it might take you a while to get used to it.

100% now I need to read Nightmare and will be waiting for the next one!

Review coming to the channel soon!

I was given an Advance Reader Copy, in exchange for an honest review, and honestly this book is phenomenal crime thriller. It really had me guessing at every turn. Just when I thought I had predicted things, I was instantly proven wrong. It was brutal at times, and deals with some horrific topics, such as grisly murders and severe PTSD, but it’s handled brilliantly and vividly. I can’t wait to read Chad’s next book.

I want to first start by saying thank you to Chad Nicholas for sending me this book. I got to read his Nightmare book when it first came out and I loved it, so when he asked if I wanted to review his next book I fully accepted. I'm rating this book 5 stars. Not because it was given to me, but because this is an excellent book.

I could have sworn I wrote this review a few months ago, so I'm sorry if you were waiting for a review. What is this book about you ask?

Shade and Jack Diamond have baggage to say the least. They are partners and work for the FBI. They find serial killers. Their latest case isn't going so well. The bodies are piling up and the victims are getting younger. Their past baggage is getting in the way of finding the killer. Both have horrors in their past that is manifesting into hallucinations during working hours. They are getting sloppy. Will they find the killer in time?

This book was incredibly written. I give major props to Chad for how it was set up. There are two separate stories being told, the past and the present. The way the book is written is so clever. The past is in italics and there are different borders on the top of each page. Crime tape is along the top of the past scenes, bullet holes for the scenes told in the present. The Prologue and ending also has different borders. Any time the past is mentioned or slipped into the present it is also in italics so you know what is going on at all times. You as a reader are never lost. Chad also incredibly was able to create fight sequences on par with "Old Boy" or "John Wick". It's almost like a single shot. The fight scenes really kept the story going at a clip.

I don't want to give too much away in this review because it is such an exciting thriller to read. I mean that twist was definitely shocking. At least to me teehee. If you like action packed thrillers about serial killers and FBI agents I recommend picking this book up pronto. Oh and it's the first in a series. I can not wait to pick up book 2. Hurry up and write it Chad!!

3.5 ⭐️ A big thank you to the author for the opportunity to read this in advance of the release.

Did I read this in 2 sittings? Yes! Was my heart racing almost throughout the entire book? Yes! Was it full of twists and turns, and violence and gore! Yes! There were even a few heartfelt moments throughout the story.

Shade is the second novel from Chad Nicholas... the first being Nightmare, which I read last year and loved! In this story we follow FBI Agent Jack Diamond and his partner Agent Shade as they are tracking down a serial killer while trying to save someone who may be the next victim.

One of the things that I really loved about the way Chad wrote this was how he started the story at a point in time... let's say it's the midpoint... he then goes to present and the rest of the story is a jump between past and present, bringing the two timelines together bit by bit until the merge onto a single present timeline. I thought that was really clever and really well done.

What I wanted more of... was a bit more realism of how the FBI may have handled the incidents throughout the story. At times it was a bit unbelievable and sort of took me out of the actual story for a minute. I would have liked a little more on the back story of the original criminal in the story... I was a little lost as to how that character became who they were...(trying not to give any spoilers here).

Overall, I enjoyed this story, it definitely will keep you on the edge of your seat and guessing all the time. I will continue to read anything Chad publishes :)

3.5 ⭐

Full review to come on youtube. I will say I enjoyed this book for the most part. Some of the scenes, especially the action scenes, seemed a little drawn out to me. The story was I interesting, and kept me guessing on how it was going to end. This was almost a four star, but it is currently at a mid to upper 3 for me. I was interested, but not wowed.
Shade is about serial killers, FBI and ex military, and the age old question of who is reliable and sane and who isn't. There is action, Gore, suspense, mystery, and the like. Check out my youtube channel later in the month for more.
I was kindly sent an ARC by the author in exchange for an honest review.

Yet another great novel from Chad Nicholas. Since reading his debut novel, Nightmare, I was extremely excited for this story. In fact, this was my most anticipated book of the year. Unlike Nightmare, which is a horror, Shade is a crime thriller with maybe a splash of horror.

It follows agent Jack Diamond, as he is trying to apprehend a violent killer, who has no feelings, no guilt and will never stop killing. He is the ultimate killing machine, and he could be anywhere. He is on a mission to kill females, which he strongly feels will give him peace. But when Jack finds the killers next victim, he must try his best to protect her.

The story also has flashbacks to Jack's past, as he works with his partner Shade, and together they must stop the strange killer called The Surgeon. We also discover Shade used to be in the military, which has given him terrible flashbacks. What connects these two killers and events. And can you really escape from your past?

This book had me hooked from page 1.

The way the past and the present are intertwined keep us on our toes the whole way through. You might think you know what's happening and then BANG there's another twist that sends your mind racing.

The characters are incredibly flawed which adds to the whole suspense of the story. They make you question what you believe and what you think is going on. And if that isn't enough for you the story is full of twists, violence and gore.

Definitely one that needs to be read and it's just the start of the series.

Happy Birthday to Shade, Chad Nicholas’ latest book baby.

This story takes you on a wild quest to seek answers alongside Jack and Shade via a brilliantly orchestrated tango between two timelines.

A crime thriller perfect for this spooky season, as it horrifies the mind and entertains the spirit.

I highly recommend Shade for those who like to sit on the edge of your seat while you read.

Thank you so much, Chad, for the gifted ebook. I look forward to reading more of your work very soon!

I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. This book was extremely fast-paced with a dual story line that worked really well. It was very gory and gruesome, sometimes too much so. The book wasn't very realistic either. But, it was very hard to put it down. There were two twists that were so good I had to put the book down to absorb what I had read. I did genuinely enjoy this book and recommend it to anyone who loves a good horror novel.

E-ARC provided by Chad Nicholas <3

This book had all the base elements I am looking for in a crime thriller. The top three of those being action, violence (and/or gore), and twists. Every character is flawed, and my favorite character (Shade) reminded me of the Punisher, but imagine him going through a psychotic break, and killing anyone and everyone regardless if they are good or bad. Another thing I love is when a story flashes from past to present or vice versa and you get little bits revealed as you go. He did this, but also blended part of the end with the past and present simultaneously and that is something I have never seen done. Pretty dang cool.

I personally like books that are short and sweet, so this book did seem to be drawn out in some parts. There are intense fight scenes throughout, but by the third one I did find myself skimming through because it was all very similar. I did enjoy this book and I will continue on to see the growth of the books and characters.

Holy Shit!! This is a must read for anyone that likes crime, suspense and action.

From the get go I was invested. The way in which the characters are written from the first scene, what they're thinking and feeling sets the tone, atmosphere and mood so perfectly.
Right down to the description of seasoned agents and how they're standing on the edge of the forest just before they go in. I felt it 100%

The jump between the past and present keeps the pacing on point and really adds to the suspense. My heart was pumping the whole time

There was once or twice where I thought "That would never happen" and had to suspend reality but it was necessary in order to propel the plot forward so I could see why it was done and it didn't take me out of the story.

There is also a scene in here that had to be inspired by John Wick. It was full on and action packed and brutal and I loved it. This whole book was like a movie in my head and the whole time I was thinking how easily it could be turned into a script.

I loved the action, the suspense, the tension, and dialogue! Dialogue isn't something that usually stands out to me as a highlight but it felt really natural here and really made Jack and Shade's relationship and reasons for certain things make sense and believeable. Their friendship just seemed really genuine.

This is an easy 4.5 for me

Be prepared...when you open to page one of Shade, you're already going one thousand miles an hour.
Chad does the right thing and starts the story in the middle of intense and tense action. The hunters of the bad guy have underestimated the bad guy.

Chad is good at describing moments in time using both large and small details. You'll miss the small details...but you will recognize them later as you read on. There are more than a few OH CRIPES moments

More so than in his first novel, the wonderful Nightmare, Chad has perfected his characterization skills. No one is cardboard. No one is simply there to recite a line of dialogue simply to get from one moment to the next. And, he respects his readers. I never get the sense Chad is talking down to his reader. Rather, he is just taking his readers on an adventure...and we're going with him...We can figure out what's happening without "authorsplaining". Also, there's very little "tell". It's all "show".

Chad has created another masterpiece.

I will continue to read him until the rest of the world catches up and Chad Nicholas gets the recognition he deserves.

Thank you to the author for a copy for review.

A serial killer is killing increasingly young women. Luckily, Jack and Shade are known for doing what it takes to get serial killers off the street quickly. Shade deals with PTSD from his time in the military. This case may push the FBI detectives a little too far.

Nicholas' second novel included all the elements that I loved from his first novel, Nightmare. A lightning fast pace, many twists and turns, and supremely interesting characters make this psychological thriller great. The three main characters Shade, Jack, and Sara were all dealing with complicated pasts. At the end of this read I was left thinking back to all the breadcrumbs I had missed. Everything fit together so well in the plot.

If you love a fast paced thriller with a great mystery, and a lot of twists then check out Shade.

Stopping a serial killer is proving to be more difficult than expected, with victims getting younger and younger. Trying to catch one killer seems to lead to the development of a new one. The lives of a former soldier and a victim dealing with guilt who isn't sure if she should be saved intertwine.

Our opening chapter has a team of agents that aren't described and eventually are only named by alphabetic code. They come across a horrifically stabbed body that apparently a former agent had killed, and each agent in turn is killed with no explanation. Then we meet Sara, suicidal and guilty regarding a past "it" that isn't even hinted at, which I found frustrating. Jack's introduction stresses unease and a horrific murder, but the lack of description didn't seem to match. Not that I necessarily need endless paragraphs of gore, but all that is mentioned is "something missing" and the stoic FBI agent is shocked and grossed out, to the point that "he knew that no matter what he did for the rest of his life, he would never get that image out of his head." What image?? We're told later what was missing, which I could guess from the start, but it was anticlimactic and didn't feel accurate for a seasoned agent to be so disturbed by. This constant vagueness in each situation came across as irritating rather than mysterious.

Between characters jumping to conclusions and knowing what others are thinking even with no objective evidence for it, and Jack acting unethically when he seems to be the moral center, I have a hard time believing in the plot or characters. How is Shade, who is supposed to have hallucinated so badly that he was medically discharged from the army, trusted enough to be part of FBI teams to investigate serial killers? I don't buy it. When we actually see Shade in action, I can see why other agents would be so frightened by his scarily efficient and soulless manner of killing. I have no attachment to any of the nameless agents that fall like dominoes, and jumping between the past and the present is only differentiated by the italics vs standard type.

If you manage to get past that point, the final quarter of the book actually has a lot of really good tension in it. Likely because we have named characters here, and we know who they are and there's more of an attachment. Realizing what is actually happening helps, and it all slots into place. I like that part of the book best and the hopeful note at the conclusion. It's a lot to go through before the really good part, though the fights prior to that are pretty intense as well. I would have preferred to care more about what happened earlier in the novel.

An investigation to catch a serial killer takes an impossible twist as those seeking the killer are so haunted by those they couldn’t save, they question how they can stop the monster without becoming one in Shade by Chad Nicholas.

To read this, and other book reviews, visit my website: http://makinggoodstories.wordpress.com/.

Two FBI agents, Jack and Shade, hunt for a serial killer, something that they’re exceedingly capable of and adept at, despite the unpleasant and unfortunate circumstances of the cases that they’re frequently investigating. But eight months ago, one particular case became more personal, along with an increased desperation to bring an end to the killings as the victims grew progressively younger and a possible target was under their protection. While seeking to bring a stop to the murders of one monster, another is created, one who is far more lethal and dangerous than the serial killer they seek, as he’s within the FBI itself and losing his grip on reality as hallucinations of the victims he couldn’t save grow stronger each moment. While placing a potential victim, Sara, in protective custody from the spiraling agent wreaking havoc, harsh truths about the case, and themselves, are confronted that place reality in stark contrast to what’s believed.

In a story filled with abundant scenes of action, many of them resulting in plenty of bodily collateral damage, flashbacks to the grisly case that triggered this narrative’s events provide context to the characters of Jack and Shade, as well as the earlier respective background trauma shaping their actions. While the exploration of PTSD was well handled, and the concept of pursuing the “lesser of two evils” and doing “whatever it takes” was captivating, the fact that all the focal characters experienced major, and relatively similar, traumatic experiences significantly elevated the required suspension of disbelief necessary to remain immersed in the story beyond the already exaggerated protocols that might be expected within the genre of a procedural. Progressing quickly, the writing builds a taut psychological tension by steadily offering limited details that obliquely depict pieces of the truth and reality, growing the tension until it snaps in the ultimate reveal.

This is my second book by Chad Nicholas, and I enjoy his writing very much and think he has some gripping ideas and scenes. I enjoy a good serial killer story, and am always chasing after more stories that remind me of one of my favorite tv shows, “Dexter”. While this one is definitely different than Dexter in many ways, it does play on the serial-killer-who-you-also-can-sympathize-with trope, but it is not quite done as well in this book. I think this didn’t work for me here because there was too much suspension of disbelief needed in order to sympathize with the characters. It was also unbelievable to me that both Shade and Jack would be suffering from basically the exact same hallucinations.

This book also has really long, drawn out fight scenes, which is just not my thing in the written form. I could’ve done with shortening those scenes, and still I think we would’ve gotten the right affect. There is also no way in heck that one man can get past like, fifty armed guards all by himself… that part was just too much for me.

I enjoyed the ending and the final twist of this book. I had the opposite experience with this book as with Nightmare… with Nightmare, I really enjoyed it up until the ending, which I found dissatisfying, but with Shade I found the ending to be more satisfying than the build up to it. I can’t deny that both book were compulsively readable, and Nicholas does know how to hook his readers. I just think you need a LOT of suspension of disbelief to enjoy this novel… more than I was really willing to give it.

I have had this book on TBR way longer than I care to admit. But I finally got around to it and it did not disappoint. Brutal, bloody and psychological twists abound. While the beginning was a tad confusing for me, things were easily picked and clicking into place before too long. This is a brilliantly written crime thriller and definitely recommend to anyone who has a love for those kind of books as well as violence, difficult issues (PTSD) and a love for the psychologically, gritty twisted.

When I first started reading the book I didn’t think I was going to like it honestly but I kept reading and I’m so glad I did. The book caught speed and captured my attention. I thought I had the ending figured out a few times but then came the twist. Definitely recommend reading this book.

Just okay. Fight scenes dragged on way too long. Tried to use the military as a back story but from a guy who is 23 years and retired, I can tell you it didn’t seem like he did that much research to make that backstory believable.
