Former Special Forces Green Beret, Sacha “Joker” Wilder, is well-versed on the subject of demolitions. As a silent partner of Four Kings Security, Joker spends his days working alongside his brothers-in-arms and his best boy, Chip—a bomb-sniffing Belgian Malinois with sass. Years of military and private security experience have prepared Joker for almost anything, except the explosive attraction between him and Giovanni Galanos.

When Gio returns from his travels abroad, everyone is charmed by the handsome billionaire philanthropist, but in Joker’s experience, anyone who’s too good to be true usually is. Gio is hiding something, but the more time Joker spends around Gio, the more his walls start crumbling, leaving him exposed and at risk of losing his heart, something he swore he would never do. Love is for suckers, and that’s not him.

For years Gio has dedicated his life to his charity work, helping people around the globe, but when things go horribly wrong during one particular trip, Gio decides it’s time to come home for good. The desire for family, and a certain ex-Green Beret with a chip on his shoulder, has Gio eager to restart his life Stateside. For all of Sacha’s blustering and griping, no one makes Gio feel safer. If only Sacha could see how right they are for each other.

Danger lurks in the shadows as someone sets their sights on Gio, and secrets are forced into the light. If Gio and Joker are to have any kind of future together, they’ll have to face difficult truths, because where love is concerned, it’ll take more than sleight of hand to make things work.

Let’s be honest straight-up and admit the dogs stole the show in this particular series instalment! MCs Joker and Gio were great and all—they were very lovely in their long-standing, slow-burn attraction and how they finally came together, this is true—but their K-9 buddies, Chip, and later Cookie, are ultimately what elevated this story to memorable. Apparently, dogs trump romance for me, but I guess I’m not at all surprised by this.

As a long-time fan of this series, and its sister series, Four Kings Security, I’ve been personally longing for Sacha “Joker” Wilder’s story, practically from the first time he and his best buddy Chip graced the page. Always together, these two always provided good laughs and warm fuzzy feelings whenever they were in the spotlight, and I couldn’t wait to get to an entire book that would feature this mouthy yet emotionally guarded man and his fierce and loyal furry companion.

Then came Gio, whom Joker has very mixed feelings about for a very long time. Determined to deny their sizzling attraction and the raw potential for a much more serious connection than he ever allows in his sexual dalliances, Joker tries time and again to keep himself in check whenever Gio is around. But this is becoming harder and harder, seeing as how Gio is related to one of the King’s partners and is therefore now considered family and one of the core group of friends.

Gio, with his wealth and globe-trotting charity endeavours, has had his own personal traumas and health challenges to overcome in recent months, but now he’s home, he’s determined to build a new life for himself—one that includes winning Joker’s heart and making the complicated man his for good.

When a bit of excitement and danger threatens Gio’s safety, Joker is compelled to get involved, even more than his job at Four Kings Security would demand. As much as he tries, Joker can’t long deny that he cares about Gio and his well-being. And, as these things often go, with increased proximity, these two go from tentative friends to lovers, especially when the stakes push higher with Gio’s health battles and his safety circumstances.

I did enjoy the progression of their romance a lot. Joker and Gio were all too easy to like—made all the easier due to the fact that they’d been such long-standing series regulars. Once those walls came down, the emotional connection was just as strong as their sexual connection. They may have been polar opposites in many ways, but that just made for a more perfect fit romantically.

As I said, the dogs stole the show for me. On page almost as much as Joker was on page himself, Chip stole every scene he was in, whether he was being a cute sassy diva dog or a badass working dog, kicking ass while taking down bad guys. Chip may legitimately be my favourite character from across both series, I kid you not. This dog is everything. The entrance of Cookie was also an absolute highlight of the story, too. I adored them both, as did their smitten owners.

This was my personal favourite addition to the Wild Cards spin-offs, to date, but I certainly look forward to reading more about these characters across the wider Kings universe.

What I briefly want to say is that this is not a standalone book - it obviously being the 3rd in its series and basically a spinoff of Four Kings Security. So, if you’re daring enough to jump right in because of the extremely wonderful dog factor in this (I don't blame you), then be prepared for a humongous cast of characters that entails at least 6 couples and several other characters who will no doubt inevitably get their story told at some point in the future as well.

Overall, this continues to bring excellent friends and family dynamics, a bit of mystery and suspense, with a slightly less cheesy vibe this time around. Gio is the most upright, kind and generous billionaire ever, and when his life is threatened, Joker feels he has no choice but to take charge of Gio’s security despite his preconceived (and wrong) notions of the mysterious man who always puts everyone first. Joker tries to resist hard, but he’s just wasting his time when it comes to the charming Gio who won’t take no for an answer.

Pick up Love in Spades if you’re serious about starting the right way. Regardless of what you choose to do, I wish happy reading to you all!

I adored this. Absolutely adored it.

I've been waiting for Joker and Gio's romance for a long while and it did not disappoint.

I have love/hate relationship tagged, but that's more just on Joker's side, because he tries to so hard to hate Gio, but Gio is a smitten kitten from day one.

This starts off with it having been 9 months since Gio came back to the states for good. Joker has tried to hard to tell himself he hated Gio and that he didn't want anything to do with him, but he can't stop thinking about Gio all the time anyway.

Gio wants Joker - or Sacha, Joker's real name, as Gio likes to call him - and he wants him a lot, but he's also a good guy and if Joker says no, well, he's backed off.

He still lets Joker know he's quite interested if he ever wants to go there, but he doesn't push himself on Joker either.

The thing is, Joker actually really wants Gio, and is attracted (although it takes him awhile to even admit that he's attracted to Gio in this), but he doesn't want to want Gio. Because Joker hasn't had the easiest or happiest life and it's hard for him to trust people, and every time he's attempted dating in the past, Joker feels that it's always ended because people just got tired of him, so he's thought dating isn't worth it anymore and has tried to stick to hooking up.

But there's just something about Gio, something that's big enough for Joker to fight so hard against.

But when Gio's life is threatened, and he needs protection, Joker can't stay away or resist Gio for long. Because Gio, while not perfect, seems too good to be true to Joker, but it turns out...he isn't. There is no hidden skeleton in his closet.

He is hiding something that happened to him, yes, but nothing about himself that is something he'd need to hide because he's a bad person or anything. So when Joker gets to know the real Gio and sees how genuine and truly kind and sweet he is, Joker becomes a total sucker for him.

And that love bug his brothers-in-arms had caught that he was so bah humbug about finally reaches Joker too. And he falls head first into it because when you fall head over heels for someone, how can you not?

Joker tries to tell himself it won't last, but he totally wants it to, in his heart of hearts.

These two just clicked together. They were so sweet and sexy and amusing together.

And I absolutely loved how Chip, Joker's dog, was basically his own character - and later Cookie, a dog that Gio gets for himself. Chip is adorable, loyal, steadfast and strong, and a little stinker. I just loved how these two just adored their dogs, and their dogs adored them, and it's almost like they could have conversations with them. Just so stinkin' adorable.

I also really appreciated how when these two eventually had a fight, the drama wasn't dragged out unnecessarily. The fight was about real issues they had, but after they cooled off, cooler heads prevailed and they were able to come back together shortly after and work through their issues.

Thank god for the inclusion of drama but not melodrama, for conflict but not misunderstandings and miscommunications.

It was also nice to just come back with these group of guys who are really more family than anything with each other. And the "Boyfriend Collective" is now their family too. I love that, that they're named the "boyfriend collective" lol. Now Gio is a part of it too haha.

These wonderful men and their boyfriends/husbands. Just...*happy sigh*

And it seems, according to the epilogue, we're also getting another spin off series, which I'm definitely interested about. (Don't worry, the epilogue still has a focus on Gio and Joker, they just happen to be going to a wedding that is King's cousin's wedding that is the set up for said spin-off.) I'm excited for it, although we're going to have wait a long while for it.

But hopefully miss Cochet, after what she had to go through, can soon get back into her normal groove of things. I've really missed her writing, her books. Most of the time I just totally fall in love with her characters and couples.

Like with Joker and Gio here. I definitely recommend you read this, it was so good! Two BIG thumbs up from me! 👍👍

I liked this book a lot. It was my fav in this spin-off series. All my questions that piled up before about Sacha & Gio have been answered but I honestly hoped for their story to be a bit more… of what, I can’t pinpoint exactly.

Looking back at both connected series and my ratings I thought about why there wasn’t real winner for me amongst them despite me loving the whole bunch of characters to bits and pieces. I think it was the pacing of all stories that was just too slow for my liking. Each story dragged a little at one point or another and eventually I was always eager to reach the end.

Nonetheless both series were very enjoyable because of the whole cast of characters and the funny banter between all of them.

---

The Boyfriend Collective. What did a billionaire, a hairstylist, a cowboy, a computer genius, and a fashion photographer have in common? They were all attached—or in Colton’s case, married to—one of Joker’s brothers-in-arms. That wasn’t the scary part. Oh no. Because each of his brothers-in-arms was disgustingly in love and in a committed monogamous relationship and Joker wasn’t—and never would be—a lovesick sucker, the Boyfriend Collective had decided he was some kind of homeless puppy in need of coddling, feeding, and petting.

The leader of this terrifying group was the billionaire, Colton Connolly. The man who started it all. The moment Colton came into their lives and Joker’s buddy Ace fell in love, the rest of them toppled like dominoes. Sappy, hearts-in-their-eyes, tents-in-their-pants dominoes. Shameful. Absolutely no self-control.

love them all! 🤣🤣🤣

There's just something about Gio and Joker's dynamics together that just WORK, and these two are just fire together.

Re-reading the Kings and spin-off books and getting so ready for Aisle be There. LOVED Gio and Joker. I think they might be my favorite couple after King and Leo (because King and Leo are forever and ever #1)

ETA: Annnnd this book is just as good in audio as I knew it would be. Greg is stellar, as always, and OMG I just love them together. Joker is such a grump, the boyfriend collective is amazing, and really - it's Chip's world, we just live in it!

I just absolutely, completely, totally loved this book. (And really - let's face it, this IS Chip's book LOL)

I highly recommend reading the Kings 'verse in order - for one, you will fall in love with all of these men and their partners, I dare you not to! Also, they interact with each other so much across the entire series it would really make the most sense and give you the most enjoyment in reading in order.

Joker and Gio's story has been one in the making, ever since Joker first heard Gio's voice. I've been dying to see what happened after the bachelor auction, and how these two would come together - and whoo, was it explosive and delicious!

Gio is finally back home - back to be with his brother and finally set some roots. However, what no one knows is the true reason he's deciding to come back, and what's really been going on while he has been away overseas. Joker thinks that Gio is too good to be true, too perfect, too rich, too nice, not to mention that he would never fit into Gio's world anyway.

I don't want to give too much away, but I just love how these two started falling for each other. It has a bit of a lovely simmer and then it definitely builds to a boil. I absolutely love the dynamics these two had when they were alone. Just yummmmm.

Of course, the guys are all around. I LOVE that it's now known as the Boyfriend Collective LOL. And I love that we're getting hints of Saint and Val. (And I need Ryden and Jay's story please!) Also a lovely surprise at the end, too! Sets things up very nicely for future books. The last couple of chapters actually made me super emotional - all good things, I promise, but I love how things end for Gio and Joker.

Fans of the Kings will love this one. New readers - please give this series a try. If you're a fan of opposites attract, strong military men and the men that they completely fall for, and a wonderful found family, you simply must read this series.

I also can't wait for the audiobook.

I received an arc in exchange for an honest review.

Chip's book is epic (Sasha & Gio are cool too)

I've been dying for this book since the very obvious UST between Sasha and Gio was so evident on the earlier books.

An added bonus was the epicness that is Joker's Belgian Malinois K9 Chip, aka the Best Boy ever.

Nothing about this book disappointed, it put a smile on my face from start to finish.

It's funny, it's scorching hot, it has intimacy and emotion, it's got friendship and found family, and it has love.

So much love that Joker just doesn't know what to do with it. It's beautiful to watch his walls start to crumble as Gio shows him the depth and strength of his feelings.

The secondary sub plot, with its suspense element, also works well, it fit the narrative and provided a means for Sasha to come to realise how much Gio meant to him.

With all the other usual suspects, and a top to the start of the next spin off series, this was a hut all round.

I can't wait for that one and I'm really hoping that Saint and Val the Fire Chief will be appearing in a book near me soon too!

A wonderful rounding off of the Four Kings: Wildcard series.

Maybe I shouldn't have picked a book that is part of a sequel series without having read the original series first, so I only have to blame myself for being confused by so many unknown characters and their relationship with the main couple ... but my mind was set for a romance with dogs and preferable with found family and I got what I asked for: Chip, Joker's Belgian Malinois, is stealing nearly every scene he's in and I really didn't mind Joker's adorable grumpiness and loyal honesty, didn't mind at all. His obvious attraction to Gio while fighting it at the same time ... I loved this kind of tension - until we got the reason for it. To me it felt somehow fabricated and it might have been better to get no reason at all. His notion that Gio is just to good to be true would have been enough for me, after all Gio is the kind of billionaire romances are so fond of. It speaks for Ms. Cochet's mastery to add enough small flaws to that character to avoid the turn from adorable into swoon-ish sweetness.

So to a certain degree this read was a case of 'be careful what you wish for' and I might see it differently when starting the series with the first book - which has the advantage to see Chip and Joker again.

Still as amazing as the first time ♥️

-------------

This was my favourite book out of the Four Kings Security series and its spin-off, and one of my favourite Charlie Cochet books ever.
"Sleight of Hand" was glorious: funny, romantic, action-packed, tough, emotional. It was everything I love in a book, and more.
I don't know what makes it stand out so much from from the previous books, but I think it's definitely connected to Cochet's larger-than-life MCs and a writing style that I found much more natural and that flowed more easily.
I absolutely adored both Joker and Gio, but Joker deserves a special mention. I've always wanted to know a bit more about him and his honest, snarky, volatile and explosive personality, and his past. And let me tell you, I completely fell in love with him. I felt an urge to hide him and protect him from the world, but also cheer him on because he was such a badass. I also absolutely loved his relationship with Chip. As a fellow dog-owner and dog-lover, I know what it means to love and cherish your dog so much because he or she's part of your family: so, the way Joker acted with Chip, their special bond, it left me teary-eyed and emotional. It was special and lovely to see. I also loved Gio, so much, his selfless and gentle nature. And I loved how different he and Joker were and how they managed to balance each other out and complete each other too. Their relationship was explosive and hot and respectful and jam-packed with chemistry. I already know I'm going to be re-reading this soon. It was so good: I'm completely obsessed.

Safety info, content warnings and tropes down below.

Okay I have to admit I wasn't looking forward to this book after the first two in the series, because it seemed like being a manwhore was Joker's only personality trait, and I had no idea what to expect. Thankfully I was positively surprised and enjoyed this more than I thought I would.

Gio was a sweetheart character through and through, and I thought it was a nice change in plot from the other books to explore his health issues. Of course I can't forget Chip -- Joker's dog -- who was the most important (and cute) character in the book. I loved how them being dog dads was a big part of the story and their relationship.

My big issue with this book -- and the rest of the series, really -- is the lack of communication. I'm so over the 'we're gonna miscommunicate and immediately break up after our very first argument', because the author seems to rely on this plot a lot. I don't mind some relationship issues sometimes and a breakup can fit (like in book 1), but Charlie Cochet does seem to love a third-act breakup.

“No one has ever made me feel as safe as you.” Well, shit. Joker was fucked.

“I’m going to fucking wreck you,” Joker told him. Gio’s eyes went wide, and before Joker knew what the hell was happening, Gio stood. He grabbed Joker’s wrist, his smile turning wicked at Joker’s wide eyes. “My sweet Sacha.” Gio ran a finger down Joker’s jawline. He bent closer and murmured in his ear. “You’re going to get on your knees for me and do everything I tell you.”

Gio brushed his lips over Joker’s. “Face it. You like me.” “Hm. I find you tolerable at best.” “Well, that’s okay, because I only want you for your dog.” Joker gasped. “Oh, you fucker!” He laughed. “I see how it is.” “I mean, you’re cute, but not Chip-cute.”

Sleight of Hand was somewhat of a disappointment. Given the palpable sexual chemistry between Gio and Joker, I was hoping that it’d be a little steamier, but it didn’t deviate at all from the formula followed by the rest of the stories making it just as predictable and bland as them. This story, in particular, would have benefited from a little more angst as well, not so much that it wouldn’t be able to fit in with the rest of the series, but just enough to balance out the steamier scenes that this story was sorely lacking in. Why are the conflicts between every single couple resolved within a matter of like three pages? It gets me every time!

But fine, let me not come across as hating on this story too much. I did like it for what it was: a quick, easy, and fun read. Gio was almost too good to be true, with all of his philanthropy and willingness to help almost anyone. I loved how he started falling in love with Joker before he even saw him. Their relationship was one of my favorites. Chip was adorable. With all that personality, he made this story even better. 3.5 stars

This was a sweet fluffy-esh read.

Greg Boudreaux did a fantastic job as always.

I liked both MCs and the ot was good too.

However... Chip was the real hero here. So so cute. I adored the MCs' interactions with him.

The sex scenes were scorching hot. That's always a plus 😍

4.5 stars - I've been looking forward to Joker and Gio's story from the moment they had their first encounter. I am happy to report this one didn't disappoint. It's been a while since Ms. Cochet has released something new, and as I haven't had much luck lately in the new release in a long-time series department, I was relieved to find she hasn't missed a beat. Sleight of Hand is just as entertaining and carries on the same theme as the previous books. It picks right up where the previous one left off, and even though there has been a bit of a gap since we last saw these guys, the characters are all here just as I remembered them.

We all know Joker is not looking for a relationship. He's happy doing his thing with his loyal partner, Chip, right by his side while he watches all of his brothers and teammates take the tumble into love. But, he is unable to resist the pull that exists between him and Gio (Laz' brother).

Likewise, Gio is in the same predicament, although he is determined to make something happen. That aside, Gio is dragging some major issues behind him, and it doesn't take long for them to come to light. Luckily, Joker is exactly the right person to see him through, and with the help of the rest of the team (in more ways than one), they are given the chance at something special.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story. I absolutely love the camaraderie of the Four Kings and the Wild Cards, and their significant others have all added something positive to the ever-growing family. My only real niggle with this story is that there is a lot of build up, and then things happened very quickly and were over. Those things felt a little rushed when all was said and done. But, this story keeps Ms. Cochet on my auto-read list with a reminder that they are worth the wait.

A story that totally goes to the dogs. Chip and then Cookie are definitely the stars in this book. An easy read with a bit of melodrama thrown in for action.Thankfully even though the men - Gio and Joker - have a falling out, they act like adults and actually talk and get it sorted.

Gio and Joker were adorable together. I did really like how determined Gio was, always going to take his own path towards the guy he was so intrigued by. He doesn't back down. It was cute how he much of a kick he got out of needling Joker, calling him Sasha and always putting himself in his way. I liked both these guys a lot. I did feel like Sasha caved a little too easily, or somehow the switch from anti a relationship to, being into the idea of it, just felt awkward somehow. But other than that little blip for me, I really enjoyed watching these two find their way together. Neither was used to counting on anyone but themselves.

This series is a lot of fun and the best part about this entire book is of course Chip. He's got such personality and spunk. His and Sasha's relationship was just too cute. He was the perfect dog for Sasha. He would have been an irresistible scamp. I loved how integrated into the story he was, both his relationship with Sasha, his abilities as a working dog, and how important Gio's acceptance of him was to there being a relationship.

I liked this one a lot. Being back with all the guys at King's was great. I love all of them and their boyfriends. This series is just fun.

Funny, sweet and sexy; the kidnap plot felt a bit tacked on, but the bits about Greg B.'s narration was awesome, as ever.

ETA: I'm not usually a big fan of animals with prominent roles in romances, but the author strikes exactly the right balance with Chip here; he's present a fair bit, and his interactions with Joker are really well done.

So I've come to realise if an author starts building a relationship in previous books within a series I usually end up disappointed.

I was so eager for Joker's story especially after his interactions with Gio in the previous book, but this fell flat for me. I liked Joker and Gio individually and as a couple BUT I didn't feel like I was reading about the same two men I read about previously. A lot of their personality didn't transfer over from my perspective, especially Joker.

The suspense aspect was quite tame and almost just added on at the end as a filler rather than be one of the main plot points. I think if I hadn't read previous books I would have enjoyed the romance aspect more, but at the same time I don't think this could be read as a standalone as it refers often to characters and events in previous books.

Solid 3/5 but I was hoping for more.

Reread

because we all need that eargasm of Greg Boudreaux talking in our ears.

4 stars

Love chip and cookie the dogs really stole the show!

This found family grew on me and you can pretty much read the first series as standalone but this one is a little harder to do since you won’t know the couples in the books, but I mean it’s possible to read this on it’s own if you wanna give it a try…. I would say good luck on that endeavor. Hahah

Greg Boudreaux really makes this series! Excited to see what happens with Gage in the new series with runaway grooms! Hoping Greg Boudreaux narrates that as well!!!

I think I liked the dog better than either of the main characters, but I did like Joker. I always have to put aside some of my reality based thinking with these books, because former youngish soldiers own companies with extensive helicopters, armored vehicles, technology more advanced than the CIA and NASA combined, and they all live in mansions and the sheer number of billionaires in Florida is staggering. LOL And I'm going "Did Gio register with the State Department? If he'd registered with their system they would have known he was missing and they could have let someone know. Very irresponsible of him and does he not communicate with his staff for months on end? Surely someone noticed he'd vanished and would have told his brother."

But putting aside reality, it was fun. I found Gio a bit of a smirky asshole. "I know everyone wants me and I know what you want and I'll just keep pushing". He was too good to be true. But still, it was a fun read and kept me going and like I said, it was worth it for the dog. :-)

Iris Brown - per RFS
.

“…lui, e no, non ci sarebbe mai cascato. Col cazzo.

“L’aria intorno a Joker sembrò cambiare, e lui inspirò profondamente.

This one was cute! This is the enemies to lovers I wanted join the club to be. It has a good transition of feelings, instead of an odd switch. We have also a good clash between Gio facing his world changing and Joker facing his own fears. And the danger subplot is present, so it doesn't sneak on you like it did in the other book.
I definitely liked this series a lot, so I'll totally be on the lookout for more Charlie books in the future!

A Joyfully Jay review.

Sleight of Hand is another story in Charlie Cochet’s Four Kings world, and the third book in the Wild Card spin off series. We finally get Joker and Gio’s story, which Cochet has been hinting at for several books. Cochet has created a tight-knit group of friends who make up a found family, and the snarky, sassy, fun, and loving group of men are in full force in this book.

Joker has been suspicious of Gio since he first learned about him, and their interactions have always had Joker on edge. Not in the least because of his attraction to Gio. Joker had a rough childhood and it’s shaped his perception of the world at large. He doesn’t trust easily, and he certainly doesn’t need love in his life. He’s perfectly fine with the way things are. Joker pushes Gio away whenever Gio flirts and asks for more, but he doesn’t really want Gio to go anywhere. I liked watching Joker’s progression and his acceptance of his true feelings.
