If you commit a crime on Vaharis 6, there’s more than one way to work off your sentence…
Tired of his family’s overbearing protection, Kano leaves his homeworld alone to blow off some steam for a few weeks. He soon finds himself framed for a crime, and he’s transported to the prison on Vaharis 6 before he can even think of finding help. Being a prince saves him from being trapped on Vaharis 6, but freedom is still beyond his grasp as he’s forced to go with a man who intends to ransom him. Kano can only pray he’s reunited with his family before anyone finds out the reason his parents have always been so protective.
Vivek is furious when his uncle shows up with a prisoner from Vaharis 6. He wants nothing to do with another ransoming scheme, yet he’s also glad to get the terrified man out of his uncle’s clutches. His protective instincts taking over, Vivek does all he can to reassure Kano that he’ll be returned to his family soon. But Vivek soon discovers that Kano has a secret, one that will alter their destinies forever.
The chemistry between Kano and Vivek was not palpable, there was just good sex with added pheromones from Kano, who's a siren, oh, and also a prince, while Vivek is a broke animal rescuer.
Kano is so desperate, he kidnaps the poor guy - and not in a fictional sexy way - and they just do this obnoxious push/pull throughout the story that I found boring. In the end Vivek realises he's better off with the rich kidnapper than going back to his animal island...and they stay together, having amazing hot sex.
Was there imprinting somewhere in there? I felt like that was where the story was going, but besides finding out sirens always look for their perfect mates with their pheromones, this issue wasn't developed further. I know absolutely nothing about Kano, and his species and his world looks like something one might want to know more about.
I'm telling you, at this point I'm thinking this must be just me, because the writing is not doing it for me at all, it doesn't pull me in. I have some sense of the Varharis 6 Universe, I would've liked for the books to be absolutely more connected, for the characters to know each other in one way or another, or at least to be some significant point to all of the shady things going on, but I fear there isn't.
Likes: - The romantic leads eventually respect each other
- The romantic leads support marriage

**mild spoilers **
Dislikes: - Vivak violates Kano’s consent constantly by refusing to act on freeing him from kidnapping while Kano is being pummeled by his uncontrollable hormones, and the intimacy between them is just as consensual when Kano does the exact same thing by kidnapping Vivak. Vivak pretending what Kano did was worse after he did the exact same thing is really hypocritical. Vivak propositions Kano as a prisoner who can’t consent and is being sexually aroused by his physiology and Kano propositions Vivak when both are free but influenced by hormones. Vivak knows Kano is being drugged by his own hormones with no way to stop it and accepts intimacy with Kano anyway, being fully aware Kano has no way to turn them off. Vivak is violating Kano’s consent because he’s basically accepting Kano while Kano is drunk and Vivak is aware of Kano’s physiological condition. Kano seems equally affected by his own hormones as Vivak, so he didn’t roofie Vivak, though he did decieve him and kidnap him. Kano suffers much more from his hormones because Vivak decides to be an emotionally manipulative creep who doesn’t acknowledge his own hypocrisy and edge him constantly while pretending he has the right to treat Kano like the only person who has violated consent and should be arrested. Minus one star for emotional manipulation - everyone treats Kano like a weapon to legally restrict, but no one arrests the rapists who turn the uncontrollable hormones against him.
DNF @ 61% ... nope. turned me off to this one completely. I can 100% be down with enjoying some dubcon or even noncon in the right fictional romance context, but this wasn't sexy or hot or gut wrenching, it was just spoiled and stupid and I lost interest or any investment in his happiness after that, so 🤷♀️
DNF halfway through. The communication between the MCs had been written simplictically, almost childish simplicity -- then one acts like an adult brat, and I'm out.
