Ben being a jerk to Peter lasted for all of one issue, but as the cover suggests, Peter isn't in condition to stop Ben from being Spider-Man. Still a better way to put Peter off the table than gaslighting him into thinking he's his own clone.
It’s so refreshing to be reading new Spidey content. After the events of last issue, Peter is in bad shape at the hospital. Seems like there is more to it than we think. Meanwhile, Ben is swinging around as Spidey going after the UFOs. Pretty good start so far.
Another great followup. Poor Peter can't catch a break. He's holding on to dear life, trying to get though the posion all while Ben is doing his best to be a superhero. This probably won't go very well for either.
Thank God writers are letting Ben Reilly be a good guy. Phew. His last miniseries really had me scared.
This issue makes sense that Ben approaches Misty Knight to help him fight the bad guys, but only if you're also reading Nick Cannon's Iron Man series out right now. The continuity is a little weird, because Scarlet Spider is otherwise out in space, working alongside Misty Knight, Gargoyle, Hellcat, Jim Hammond, and Iron Man. So, assuming that this issue of Amazing Spider-man takes place after Scarlet Spider somehow gets back to earth, then it makes sense that he would know Misty as a recent teammate.
The story was emotional, it had fantastic art, an awesome set up for Beyond, it shows the good in both Peter and Ben, and it just made more 10x more interested in Beyond.
This book was planned over three-two hour zoom calls and it shows. The team promoted the book by saying they were "trying to do right by Ben Reilly" and for 19+ issues he's portrayed as an incompetent fool and ineffective hero, his memories are stolen, and his sense of self is erased and he does a hideous new costume becoming "Chasm", and edge lord who narrates in the second person. If you were excited about Zeb Wells upcoming ASM run or Nick Lowe's editing prowess, pick up any issue of this trash and you will reconsider. A hugely cynical cash grab that doesnt feel satisfying issue to issue or read as a whole. Spider-Man Beyond is a masterclass in making bad and unappealing comics. No one who put their name on this garbage will ever see another dollar from me. If I could give it 0/5 I would. Dispiccable.
Zeb Wells is two for two as this continues to be fun which is nice to write about a modern era issue of ASM. Still going to take me a while to not tense up as I start reading ASM however!
I hope Ben's spider-sense is starting to tingle around his Beyond Corporation as the vibes are starting for the rest of us...
