He never thought to wed for love. He never anticipated her.
Welcome to book 1 in the new and exciting series from bestselling author Elise Marion.
Helena Montgomery is left to care for her siblings after the deaths of her parents. Buried under a pile of debt, she has no choice but to join her friends in a dangerous scheme. Moonlighting as a masked highwayman is a sure way to end up facing the hangman, but there is nothing Helena wouldn’t do for those she loves. Besides, she only intends to continue her illegal activities until her sister’s first season yields an advantageous marriage.
Lord Sebastian Radcliffe doesn’t want a wife but must select one to secure his family legacy. The young, beautiful Harriett Montgomery seems like the perfect choice—yet Sebastian finds himself drawn, instead, to her elder sister. He never expected to marry for love, yet the vivacious Helena quickly burrows her way past his stony façade and straight into his heart.
He thinks her a high-handed shrew; she thinks him a self-righteous bore. Yet, passion kindles between this unlikely pair, leaving them hopeful that the futures they once thought impossible might be within reach. However, the damaging secret of Helena’s crimes hangs over her head, forcing her to keep Sebastian at arm’s length. Despite her best efforts, she is unable to deny the depth of her feelings.
When the truth is exposed, will Helena lose the man she has come to love?
Elise Marion is a lover books and has a special place in her heart for sweet and sensual romance. Writing about love across all walks of life is her passion, as is reaching people through the written word. The Army wife and stay-at-home mother of two spends most of her time taking care of her children. Her second job includes writing stories about characters that people can fall in love with. When the Texas native isn’t caring for her family or writing, you can usually find her with her nose in a book, singing loudly, or cooking up something new in the kitchen.
Helena Montgomery is in need of money to support herself and her siblings, so she turns to robbing coaches with a group of her closest friends. However, when she falls in love with Sebastian, an earl, that becomes exponentially more difficult.
Firstly, may I shout this from the rooftops - I adored Helena. She is a tough and loving woman who is driven to go whatever she can to save her family. I thought Sebastian was a little blander than her, but I really liked their relationship and how devoted he is to her, almost puppyish. I also really liked the Lawless Ladies and would love to keep reading the series to find out what happens to them - already I have spotted several potential heroes!
I did think, however, that the black moment and the resolution of the story was a touch rushed, compared to the much longer build-up of the story. Sebastian comes to his realization remarkably quickly, though I am glad he was able to recognize his privilege.
Overall, an excellent, sweet read with an unusual premise.
Disclaimer: I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley. This is my honest and voluntary review.
I think this was the first time I've ever seen a plus size woman on a cover of a historical romance book... And I was so excited for it!
The romance between our main leads could be described as a softer version of kathony and, while I immensly enjoyed their quippy dialogue and longing stares (lookin at you seb!), I must admit that I wasn't happy with the way it all unravelled at the end - the words Sebastian spoke after Helena confessed were awfully cruel, and while they were said in anguish of feeling betrayed and from a position of priviliged ignorence, it did not mean our hero should've gotten away with it so easily. I feel like he didn't earn Helena's forgivenss; it happened all too quickly and was lacking of any sort of tension.
Other than that, everything was amazing and I can't wait to continue on with the series!
side note: i cant wait for derek's story! ALSO the way seb fell for her first and was so smitten and genuine in his yearning was so absolitely wonderful! oh and the carriage scene...THE CARRIAGE SCENE! ❤
So, I initially requested this book because the cover features a larger woman on the cover which I thought was gorgeous! However, while I get that the main character, Helena, is supposed to be a bigger woman, sometimes her descriptions don’t coincide with it. She is described as the same height as her sister who is lithe, but she “outweighs her by a stone”. This was a time where it was obvious the author is American. One stone is only 14 pounds. How is she supposed to be totally full-figured, voluptuous, bigger woman, but only weighs about 15 pounds more??
There were also some instances of grammar and formatting that appeared in the book (or at least the epub version I have). For example:
Chapter 7: “Bloody hell,” he muttered under her breath – obviously should be “she” not “he”. Chapter 8: On the one hand, he suppose he had no one to blame for himself – the phrase is usually ‘no one to blame BUT themselves’ Chapter 13: Used the word “goal” instead of “gaol” for prison. Chapter 13: “Harriet, there are matters that, it’s complicated.” – in this instance I think the author is meaning to use some dashes instead or even ellipses (“Harriet, there are matters that... it’s complicated.”)
Beyond the small mistakes and formatting, I really liked the story. I love a plus-size heroine and the diversity of characters as well (including POC is often left out of historical romance even for the friends and side characters! I hope Mina gets her story too!). The pacing was good, the plot was exciting, I just wish there had been a bit more clean-up before reading!
My heart went out to the heroine in this novel as she tried to meet the needs of her family. Banding with other women in a similar situation, they become highway robbers to make ends meet, as there were few other options open to women who found themselves destitute. Helena's sole aim is to ensure that her sister has a season, one that will hopefully lead to a good marriage, whilst her younger brother completes his university education. Deciding it is time to fulfill his obligations to his family, Lord Sebastian espies Harriett Montgomery across the ballroom and asks for an introduction, but discovers that her older and rather severe sister is her guardian. Getting past Helena is going to be difficult, especially when he discovers that the spinster takes up more time in his thoughts than the young lady he intends to court. However, when by mischance Helena's nocturnal activities are exposed, any thoughts of a future together are swept off the table, leaving Sebastian nursing his wounds and Helena with a broken heart. Fortunately, they both have younger siblings who very volubly express their views. I found myself in a quandary over Helena's criminal activities and whilst I felt compassion for her, I abhorred her methods. However, I also remembered that one should “judge not lest ye be judged”. Ultimately the novel comes to a very good conclusion. I received a copy of this book as a gift from Dragonblade Publishing and NetGalley and this is my honest and voluntary review.
You never know what will happen when a group of desperate young women get together and make a plan... A plan to become highway men.. no make that women! Desperate times call for desperate measures as the saying goes!
A simply delightful story with a heroine who will won my heart and a hero who is divine (one of my favorite names Sebastian). She has done what she had to do to earn money, so her younger sister could have her first season, and find a wealthy husband.. hopefully. She just doesn't need her midnight activities to be found out!
He has recently inherited his title and has worked hard to restore the family name after his father did his best to ruin it. Now he needs to find a wife. Although a newcomer catches his interest, it is her older sister who intrigues him!
A wonderful start to a new series, and can only be anxious for more!
Spinster Sister, by Elise Marion. I enjoyed reading the plot of the story. The writer did great with applying a interesting plot to this romantic love story. The writer provided great descriptions to many different details of the story. These descriptions helped me the reader to have somewhat of an imagination to what was happening in the book. The was a page turner for me. I think with the writers great ability of providing an entertaining story helped with this. Helena and Sebastian I really liked reading their story. The constant back and forth between the two certainly did heated moments behind closed doors.
When I saw the plus-sized heroine on the cover of this Regency romance novel, I knew I had to pick it up. I love a plus-sized hero/heroine! Spinster Sister got off to a bit of a slow start for me, but once I was in I was hooked. The chemistry between Helena and Sebastian is just SO good, and had just enough of the hate-to-love kick to me get a tropeful of butterflies in my tummy.
Another really enjoyable part is the friendship between Helena and the rest of the "Band of Brigands" - though at times it was a little difficult to keep the five of them all straight. I am SO READY for their stories, and I can't wait to see which one of them gets matched up with the burly Irish detective in book two... My guess is Mina, what's yours? :)
A digital ARC of this book was provided by the publisher via NetGalley for review. All opinions are unbiased and my own.
I truly enjoyed this historical romance. Helena is a fighter and is doing what needs to be done to keep her family. She's been looked over by society because she doesn't fit. However, she has a plan and she's brave enough to make it happen. Sebastian is privileged and looking for a wife. He sets his eyes on Helena's sister but soon realizes Helena is made for him.
They have a lot of differences but love can make it work or can it. I loved the love story between Sebastian and Helena. A classic historical romance. The sex is also AMAZING! I am down for the ride. I will be reading the rest of this series.
This book’s main subject is the position of women of higher status in England and the paucity of choices offered to them when disaster struck. What to do when creditors are banging on the door and you need to take care of your siblings or family and have no education to do so?
This is what happens to Helena and four of her friends. They all need money. Desperately. So they decide to become highway-women. Or thieves. And à la Robin Hood, take from the rich to save themselves.
Added to this is a light romance with a gorgeous, authoritarian, arrogant hunk who becomes fascinated with Helena. It helps that he is rich as Crésus.
This was a very likeable romance, with good characters, enjoyable dialogues, a bit of suspense thrown in.
My only issue with the book is that I guessed what would happen right at the start, hence not giving me the full satisfaction I wanted.
If you like a good, witty, quick-paced romance, go for it. You won’t be disappointed.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC in exchange of my review.
Elise was a new author for me and I chose the book for its plot: I love wallflowers and spinsters finding their true love. Well, I wasn’t disappointed at all! I loved this book from the very beginning and it made me laugh and cry as well, keeping me entertained till the end. Helena is a wonderful woman who finds herself in dire straits after the death of both her parents. She has two younger siblings and has to care for them as well. So she resorts to extreme measures: she creates a band of highwaymen, or “highwaywomen”, together with her dearest friends, who are equally in need of money, to rob rich people who can spare a pound or two. The group of women is tightly knit and I loved their friendship very much. They are like five musketeers who protect each other and care for each other very much. What Helena did not anticipated was finding her true love... She was resigned to being a spinster! Sebastian is looking for a bride, but he isn’t looking for love. He’s practical, stoic, stern and arrogant, but with a reason: he had to erase the legacy of his father’s sins (a drunkard, gambler and womanizer) and restore the good name of his family and the family finances. But when he meets Helena, he falls head over heels for her. Pity that she holds this big secret... I totally recommend this book and I look forward to the stories of the other women of the band, as well as Derek’s (Sebastian’s best friends) and the Bow Runner who is set to capture the band of delightful bandits... I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I loved both Sebastian & Helena, their verbal banter was hugely entertaining & their attraction started off simmering but quickly grew to sizzling. Five lady highwaymen or should it be highwaywomen! Is different & all five woman have suffered hardships & I look forward to each one of their stories plus Felix deserves his story too. A very well written page turner which drew me in from the start & held me engrossed until the end My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
I love the Lawless Ladies! Each member of the Bandit Brigand has been dealt an unfair hand at life --- and with no other feasible options they turn to highway robbery to provide for themselves and their families.
Caring older sister during the day, ruthless criminal at night --- both sides of Helena's character are strong, determined, and extremely loveable.
Such an important discussion of the lack of opportunities available to women during this time period --- a point that even an arrogant, titled man of the ton can eventually come to realize.
Excited to read more of this series and learn more about the other women in this fierce pack!
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC in exchange for my review.
This is my first book by this author and I’m hooked. An exciting concept, five ladies form a group of thieves that become known as the Band of Brigands. These women are surviving and providing for their families the only way they know how. Helena is the only one left to provide for and protect her siblings. She joins her friends robbing coaches to feed her family and prepare let sister for her season. Their only hope is for Harriett to make a match. “She wasn’t a wallflower… she was more like a stem—plain and unremarkable and always unnoticed.” She never dreamed she would meet someone like the Earl of Stratford. An exciting, entertaining and charming store that’s keeps you wanting more. I am anxiously awaiting the next books in the series.
I received this ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Helena Montgomery has been orphaned, left penniless, and now has to somehow give her younger sister a Season. Only a good marriage will save them now. Lord Sebastian Radcliffe seems like an excellent suitor for her sister - if only Helena didn't feel sparks in his presence! And how will he respond once he knows Helena has become a highwayman in order to support her family?
I loved the premise. I loved Helena. I LOVED this book. It made going to bed at a decent time completely impossible and I have no regrets! A plus-sized heroine...diverse characters who aren't just servants...steamy scenes...a deadly secret. This ticked every box for me. It's also on the shorter side for historical romance, which I appreciated (otherwise I'd have been awake past midnight lol) but you don't feel like you're missing anything. An excellent first book of what looks to be an excellent series.
*I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Loved it! I have a soft spot for spinster romance, and even better if she is a witty and loveable character such as Helena. Tne Band of Brigands is also great, loved the interaction and how each lady has her own problems but each of them relies on each other to help. Harriet was on point as the clever young sister and helped out her older sister gain love the most adorable way. Sebastian was not so bad, I loved the fact that he was such a pompous brute-boar and that the couple always got on their nerves. But there were also those moments where they connected and were able to talk like civilized people. The twist at the end was well delivered and the angst kept me on my toes.
A series opener with an unusual core concept tends to grab my attention as with this book: a group of desperate society women turned highway robbers!
Desperation in "Spinster Sister" means that the eldest daughter must assume responsibility for her brother's education expenses and her sister's launch into the marriage mart to attract and attach a suitably wealthy man who can support all three siblings.
I enjoyed the ethical and moral dilemmas presented in this story as well as insight into the severely restricted plight of women in the society of the times. I liked and identified with both major characters as developed by the author.
I recommend this book and look forward to understanding desperation as presented by the other highway(wo)men introduced in this start to the Lawless Ladies series.
Spinster Sister is a great story! What would you do if you didn’t know where your next meal would come from, if your clothing was threadbare and torn, if you were unable to provide basic necessities to those you were responsible for — the better question might be, what wouldn’t you do to survive? This is what Helena Montgomery must decide as she takes on the role of head of the family and protector after her parents are killed. Helena is left to find a way to survive and launch her younger sister into society with the hope she will marry a well to do man who won’t mind helping to support a spinster sister. The plan was to gather enough money, see her sister wed, and live the rest of her life alone. Then Helena meets Lord Sebastian Radcliffe, Earl of Stratford, and all her carefully laid plans are blown to pieces.
Lord Sebastian Radcliffe, Earl of Stratford, has finally decided to find a wife so it’s off to London’s society for him where he attends event after event in search of his perfect wife. When he meets Helena at one such event he is initially drawn to Helena’s younger sister, believing she checks all the boxes on his list. However he soon finds himself drawn to Helena and his thoughts on what makes a perfect wife are quickly changed.
I loved watching Helena and Sebastian fall in love. There was a definite spark between the two characters and the author did a great job of allowing their romance to feel real and not rushed. You can’t help but wish for Helena and Sebastian to get their HEA. Yet you are left to wonder just how Sebastian will behave once he learns Selena’s secret…will he love her enough to see past previous actions? That’s something you have to find out by reading.
This book was absolutely charming and delightful. Elise Marion's tone is beautifully lighthearted and whimsical while still being able to interweave topics of wealth and hardship and finding ways to support family and friends. Marion's writing is engaging and accessible. This love story is sweet and steamy, with a wonderful mix of side characters. Marion has crafted a story about friends, family, love and the lengths people are willing to go in order to protect and take care of those things.
The heroine-Helena, is strong, loving and selfless. She is the eldest in her family and their survival after their parents death two years ago has fallen heavily on her shoulders. Helena is also surrounded by a strong group of female friends who also find themselves in hardships, so they all come up with a plan on how they can gain money to help support themselves as needed. Their plan is an unconventional one but a necessary one because of their status in society, their education and the limitations that are put on women, their prospects are very limited past marrying for financial stability. Sebastian, the hero, is very family oriented and someone who sees the world in strict lines and rules. Sebastian has felt the strong pull to be an upstanding citizen in society to show his family off in a better light than his late father did. Sebastian plans to marry this season after he finds the wife he deems to be a prefect match.
This story first unfolds with Sebastian's interest seeming to fall on Harriet, Helena's younger sister (who is a beauty), but sparks fly between Sebastian and Helena. Helena, has often been overlooked in society and at 23 she is considered a spinster, but when Sebastian meets her he is fairly instantly attracted to her voluptuousness and as they banter he sees her wit, humor and how their interests align. I love how Sebastian loves Helena's curves and how he finds her sexy, where as in the past Helena thinks she has been overlooked because of them. I also really liked that Helena was not constantly looking down on herself because of her body shape, it was just a part of who she is. I love that Sebastian pretty early on knows that he is falling for Helena and that he pursues her with care, loving words and gentle caresses. Watching Helena and Sebastian fall in love and explore those feelings was really lovely. I love that Sebastian was not afraid to be very vocal in how he felt and how attracted he was to her, and I love that Helena is also bold in her feelings and how with Sebastian she is able to stand up for herself and her choices. The third act conflict was a bit frustrating but necessary to explore Sebastian's growth and show how his understanding of the world and how it works has shifted.
I would definitely recommend this book. I loved all the relationships that varied from new love, family, friendship and found family. I loved the exploration and discussions around what you would be willing to do to protect and keep those you love safe, well feed, housed and clothed. I loved the growth our hero went through in learning to love and understand what that love really means, and learning that things are not always right and wrong. I am looking forward to the continuation in this series as well as continuing to explore Elise Marion's backlist.
The general premise of the series--of which this story is the first--is problematic for me. I get that Helena and the other women in the Band of Brigands have turned to highway robbery out of desperation, but it was really hard for me get to a place where I considered that transgression acceptable. All of Helena's arguments fell flat for me; I understand that the coaches they rob seem to be of wealthy people, but who's to say that the occupants of the coach are not in similar straits? I dunno. I've read lots of novels where the heroine is living in poverty, but she always manages to find a different way to make ends meet. Perhaps I'm just being naive.
Aside from the whole criminal thing, the relationship between Helena and Sebastian at first is really uncomfortable. They almost immediately antagonize each other, but it's not entirely clear why. I think we're supposed to feel like they are aware of their attraction but are fighting it, but instead it just seems confrontational, and neither of them come out of it looking very good. The transition from antagonists to being in love happens fairly abruptly, and I almost had to go back and reread to figure out how it happened.
It's a pity, really, because atypical heroines like Helen are hard to find. She's supposed to be voluptuous and perhaps a little heavy, which is a nice change of pace from the tiny perfect heroines in most romance novels. Her friends and presumably the heroines of future novels in the series are equally diverse. But I won't likely seek out their novels because I just don't want to read about a bunch of criminals finding love. (Not a fan of organized crime/mob boss romance either.)
Sorry if I'm being judgy.
I received an ARC of this book from the publisher and Netgalley in exchange for my honest opinion. Thanks!
Spinster Sister by Elise Marion is a common enough trope: the older spinster sister steals the heart of the younger sister's suitor. Marion has made it own by changing several details: the elder sister is curvaceous (read hefty) and she and her friends are highwaymen. Helena has befriended four other women who are also having financial difficulties. For women in these times, was to make money are limited and robbing those who already have too much seems like the best way to go about it. They are unrepentant. Knowing they will be caught they know this avenue is available only a limited time. The night they stop the carriage of Felix, the brother of Helena's about-to-be fiancé, the Earl of Stratford, and he recognizes Helena brings that end sooner than they had anticipated. Now to tell Stratford.
This is a terrific book. It addresses several societal ills: a beautiful woman with a less-than-beautiful body, a man with rigid principles which leave no room for circumstances, women in fire financial straits and their limited options. All of these have been issues for centuries, and remain so today, although women do have more financial options today than in the past. Marion wove all of these problems into an enticing love story, wherein a man chose to follow his heart instead of the dictates of society. It was a lovely story with good characters and situations neatly fitting into a historical contest. I loved it!
I was invited to read a free e-ARC of Spinster Sister by Dragonblade, through Netgalley. All thoughts and opinions are mine. #netgalley #spinstersister
Spinster Sister by Elise Marion is the first book in a new series called Lawless Ladies. The book is an historical romance, but the premise of the book and the characters make this book interesting. What would you be willing to do to keep your loved ones alive? Would you steal or cheat?
The Spinster Sister is Helena Montgomery. When her parents were killed in a carriage accident, she was left to take care of her younger siblings. The only issue was there was little to NO money. Helena knew that her brother must finish college and her sister a first season to marry a man with money to help them out. Helena joined with friends and began their careers as masked bandits to get enough money for each of the five women to survive.
I loved Helena and her determination. I loved that she was a beautiful curvy woman and loved food. I loved her intelligence and strength. I did know that Lord Sebastian Radcliffe was going to be her ‘person’ though. That was not a surprise, although the ending seems quick to me. I look forward to reading more books in this series. Please and Thank-you
Spinster Sister is the first book in the new series “Lawless ladies” by Elise Marion. When Helena Montgomery finds herself in debt after the death of her parents and her siblings to care for, she resorts to becoming a masked highwayman with several of her friends in a similar situation. In doing so, she believes she can give her younger sister her first season and possibly a secure marriage. Yet when Lord Sebastian Radcliffe meets her sister Harriett, Helena is not so sure and yet, she seems to find that she enjoys his company, whilst not revealing this to him. They initially find themselves constantly arguing yet, as the more time spent together, the more unlikely it is that Harriett is right for Sebastian but more for Helena. An enjoyable series with so many wonderful and strong women like Helena, to make it quite amusing. Sebastian whilst stern and arrogant, is quickly transformed when he meets Helena, and quite responsive to her strong personality. Their dialogue was witty and keep me entertained throughout the story. I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
Thanks to Netgalley, the author and the publishers for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review,
This is the first book in the Lawless Ladies series and, if this story is any indication, it promises to be an exciting one.
We start with 5 friends who are in dire straits and have taken to a life of crime in order to make ends meet. Helena has two siblings to support after the sudden death of her parents and she is penniless. She needs to marry her beautiful and charming sister off to a rich member of the tonne, but when the Duke of Stratford takes and interest, Helena is not convinced he is appropriate for her sister ... her on the other hand ....
What I loved about this book is the diversity amongst the characters, the positive body image messages and the smoking hot chemistry between the Duke (Sebastian) and Helena. There are no stereotypical villains - everyone is human and choices are not black/white or good/evil.
It's a deeply emotional romance as well as being a lot of fun to read. The sparks that fly between Helena and Sebastian are spectacular.
Helena Montgomery is determined to earn money for her and her siblings, so she joins a group of her closest friends on their escapades to rob coaches. But once she meets Sebastian, an earl, Helena's plans become more complicated.I adored Helena: she was resilient and loving and did everything she could to support her family.
I found Sebastian a bit dull compared to her, but I appreciated how devoted he was to her. The Lawless Ladies were also great, and I would love to read more about them — there are already several potential heroes in the series! The climax and resolution of the story occurred too quickly for my liking; however, I was glad that Sebastian recognized his privilege throughout the story.
Overall, this was an enjoyable romance with a creative premise.
Reading about women who use unconventional means to earn a living is fun to read in books. But what is important is how the author decides to tackle the issue. Desperation makes people do cruel things but the end doesn't justify the means. This whole Robinhood angle is sort of a grey area.
Helena and her friends decide to rob rich people travelling because they don't have any other means of survival. Helena feels that if her married to a rich man all their problems will get solved. But they don't have enough money to debut Harriet in the ton, so they decide to steal.
Enter Sebastian, an Earl who decides to marry Harriet but eventually gets besotted by Helena. However the main issue hanging between them is that Helena is a robber and they unfortunately robbed Sebastian's brother who was left injured. I didn't like everything that followed after that segment and the whole book went downhill from there.
The chemistry between the leads was good but it was too fast and you don't feel like rooting for any of them. Since there was no resolution to the stealing angle, I was left disappointed.
I give this book 2 stars for the initial interest gathered by the book.

Helena and Sebastian what an incredible love story! Helena is a spinster in charge of her younger siblings. When their parents were killed in a carriage accident they were left basically destitute. She and her five friends who are also in dire straits decide to become highwaywomen. Sebastian is an Earl who has spent years trying to undo the damage to his family name caused by his father. He is a very serious and sober man. Sebastian starts courting Helena’s younger sister and comes to realize it’s the full figured Helena that makes him hot. What happens when Helena and her cohorts rob a coach with Sebastian’s brother Felix in it? Will Sebastian be able to open his heart and understand Helena’s desperation? Can he forgive her dishonesty? Will they overcome their adversity? Come along on an amazing journey of self discovery and love with the Lawless Ladies! You will laugh, cry and root for the underdogs in this beautiful tale. This is my first Elise Marion book but it definitely will not be the last!
