Shortly after the methane event that took from them their father and most of the world’s population, brothers, Gabe and Owen Foster embark on a quest to look for survivors and a permanent place to start a new life.
The storms have ended and air is safe, to them and the others it is time to look toward the future.
However, the future is not stable and the extinction level event has only just begun. With a new threat on the horizon, one that can wipe the rest of humanity from existence, the brothers search for a safe haven grows more complicated and the choices are few. It is a race against the clock to not only find, but get to a place where they can live through the catastrophe coming their way.
I am so happy that I came across Jacqueline Druga and the first book I read of hers was Flight 3430 a brilliant book to start with. The follow-up Grounded did not disappoint me either. Both books were so amazing I had to read them one after the other. I loved the different characters, Tom and Gabe reminded me of my husband and eldest son a few years ago. Delaney did my head in continually running away but thankfully Gary survived in the end. Is it not good sign of a goodbauthor when you can relate to the characters. I don't care about the punctuation the story was so good and that is what a review is. If I have a problem with grammar email the author don't mark the book down.
The book starts out with a recap of what happened in the first book in the series and then moves on. The situation on the Earth is bad and is getting worse. There are explosions from the ground, sinkholes developing and growing quickly and the temperature is rising to deadly levels.
A plan is formed to send some people North to where it's colder while some remain behind in the Cheyenne Mountain structure, hoping to survive the increasing heat and violence outside the base.
So the question is how will some people get to safety in the North, how will those who stay behind in the mountain survive, how will a couple of main characters survive outside the mountain and will there be anything left of the outside when the mountain facility opens after some time has passed.
The book has good characters, a lot of things going wrong in the environment that are not duplicates what happens in so many books of this nature and a genuine question of whether or not the human race will go extinct. Very well done.
Some people survived the methane. The came fires shooting willy nilly out of the ground and sink holes that took ventures towns. NORAD becomes the center of civilization for the survivors in the U.S., and efforts get underway to get those they can up to northern Canada. Love these books. Have two beefs, though. Some of the grammatical errors are cringe worthy, coming out of the mouths of "educated" characters. The constant running after Delaney? They should have let her keep running. She cost lives and materials that could have been put to better use. I think this the first time I have ever wanted a character in a book, that wasn't a villain, t iso croak.
I liked this second book better than the first. Although Ms. Druga seems hell-bent on destroying the world, there is actually some hope in this novel.
Once again, it is the characters that are compelling. The two brothers, Owen and Gabe, the teenager Lucas, their uncle Gene, and firefighter Gary all make this series worth reading.
However, the editing is atrocious - non-existant! Please, before you write another novel, Ms. Druga, find an editor who knows what they are doing. I was an English teacher for 25 years, and I felt like I was correcting a student paper. I edit as I read. If I don't, then I can't read the book. I do this with everything I read - force of long habit! You have good ideas, but your writing needs some help.
I had really liked the first book, but this not quite so much. This, like the first, was plagued with editing issues, including missing/wrong punctuation, spelling and on one occasion, the wrong character is speaking. It is also not clear as to why the violent geologic changes would abate in just under two years and everything would be OK. My biggest issue was Delaney. She continues her predilection for running off and unfortunately, her friends keep pursuing her. That really got old and it was bothersome that so many people that had survived to that point, clearly lacked good survival instincts. I did like that it ended on a positive note.
I re-read book 1 before Grounded to refresh. I’m so glad I did. I think going straight to the second book was excellent. Grounded took all of the treads, enlarged them and then brought them together in a very real extinction event. The characters were so very real and quite loveable. The life threatening events were enough to make me squirm. I was glad there were no bad guys involved, the story remaining focused on the main characters. In all a most exciting and entertaining read. Worthy of 10 stars!
I've read a number of Druga's books. This one was a pretty lame follow-up to the first book.
A character that keeps running off and then is chased after by multiple characters to "save" her. The rescue almost always ends in someone else's death. Same character does this like 5 times. Let her die already. Please.
The rising temperatures?? Ridiculous. There are plenty of places on earth where people survive temperatures over 100°.
Gabe’s boot sank in the thick mud that was at least eight inches deep. When it did, he hit a board, causing it to flip upward, with it a small wrestling action figure. “Whoa, what is this?” Gabe reached down for it and lifted it. He cleared the dirt from the figure and stared at it wondering if it perhaps belonged to one of Delaney’s children. He wouldn’t know.
Nice ending. For some reason I thought it was going to be brutal. Some people are their own worse enemy. As always Jackie Druga manages to let her imagination run wild and come up with a story no one has ever done or thought of. What an amazing ability.
I am a huge fan of the author and was so glad to get this second book when it came out. I put off reading it because I wanted a clear head to enjoy it. I wasn't disappointed.
The few survivors have to find a way to keep humankind from extinction. With the heat building up to 120 and higher. Over half head north. While the rest are locked in Cheyenne mountain.
This story was unique and thought provoking. It seemed a bit slow at first on book 1 but quickly gained momentum. I was disappointed to finish - would have enjoyed a book 3.
I love all her books. This is an awesome read, second book in a 2 book series. Ties up lose ends. Let's us, the readers, know how the characters lives are going. There is sadness in this. But there is humor and a lot of love. I highly recommend it.
Loved it! I wish there could have been another book. I loved the message throughout, that life always finds a way to go on and it's always worth living. This probably had my favorite ending out of all the books I've read by her. Fantastic job, Jacqueline Druga!👏
This 2 book series is great. Very intense, equally exciting and fast paced throughout. You can never go wrong with a Jacqueline Druga story.....these are just more examples of that.
This is another great story and kept you wondering until the end. A great easy read. This book is about the apocalypse but not a scenario I had ever heard or thought of, so in that regards it's even better.
I really liked most of this book and the twist and turns it made. What made me give it 4 stars instead of my usual 3 was the way it ended. I felt like the ending was perfect for the book.
