Maryanne Moodie's Modern Weaver: Where Color Meets Loom

Rate this book
From fiber artist and weaving expert Maryanne Moodie, the perfect guide to weaving bold, colorful pieces

Maryanne Moodie’s Modern Weaver offers a wealth of information focused on color theory, designed to help readers better select their own palettes for their custom creations. With detailed instructions and photography for each project, this book is both beautiful and informative. And with projects that explore gradients and ombré effects, as well as advice on how to tackle even the boldest of color choices, there’s enough to keep even the most advanced weavers engaged.

Weaving is back in style and it’s clear the trend isn’t going away any time soon. Moodie’s first book, On the Loom , was at the forefront of this revival, and her second book delivers even more of what makers love. Her projects are accessible no matter your skill level, and her exploration of color theory gives more depth to the projects. Maryanne Moodie’s Modern Weaver delivers the well-designed projects makers are looking for, ranging from wall hangings to pillow covers, keychains to laptop sleeves to framed art, and that will have them weaving in no time.

The strength of this one is definitely her creative use of fibers, stitch mixes, and off-loom ideas. But for me this was more eye candy than instructional. Maybe because those gorgeous puffy yarns sometimes made the stitch hard to see?

I think the book itself is quite beautiful- lovely photographs & Maryanne Moodie provides lots of color inspiration.

My biggest critique as someone who is still learning- it is not clear what instructional image applies to which part of the directions so it takes some extra effort to pair visual and written instruction. If you already understand the basics you may not have the issue.

Each project also contains a lot of repetitive text (checking warp tension, etc) that may be helpful for beginners but obnoxious for someone with more experience.

I chose this book over Moonie’s other title, On The Loom, because the projects presented are much more appealing.

Seems like a good guide for people who have some weaving prior knowledge and there is definitely good inspiration in the book. However, I was disappointed by how many non weaving projects were in the book. I don't consider wrapped projects to be weaving, nor are tassels, and certainly not macrame. They're fiber art sure, but hardly weaving. (And let's not even talk about those sad little macrame "feather" earrings. Please get a real macrame book for that project!)

Interesting concepts to stretch the weavers imagination, however the aesthetic of these projects isn't my thing. More of a book to challenge me to think outside of the box with my designs.
