From photographer Susan Kaufman, Walk With New York is an intimate celebration of the beauty and charm of New York City through more than 200 color images.
For some people, New York City exists only in their imaginations, a big-screen beacon of wonder and 24/7 delight. For others, it’s a dream the diverse urban center where they will finally feel they belong. And still for many, it’s the place they already call home. No matter how you view New York, longtime fashion editor and photographer Susan Kaufman will help you see the city with fresh, appreciative eyes.
As she travels with her camera through New York, Kaufman invites readers to see the city as she from the sidewalk. She explores the beauty of the city found in its charming townhouses, decorated shops, lovely parks, shop facades, and serene streetscapes. New York may be known as the city that never sleeps, but beneath the bustle, there’s a soulful side, with its own quiet power and universal allure.
Walk With New York invites readers to appreciate the streets and buildings that have made the world’s most iconic city survive centuries of change yet retain its vitality and aspirational magnetism.
“Whether you’re a denizen or a stranger to the Big Apple’s streets, these gorgeous shots . . . will make you feel the magic.” — People
Reads like a bedtime story book. As a local, currently living on the west coast, this book was such a comfort. Every photo, even of places I’ve never seen was like seeing them again. I had tears from the very first page to the last. I can’t wait to go home and walk along those streets to see everything on the pages.
If you love NYC and miss to walk around the city, it's a good idea to follow the steps of Susan Kaufman. This book has been accompanying my morning coffee for the last couple of days and I enjoy it.
Fabulous book that unveils a beautiful and charming side of New York, highlighting its quaintest and oldest neighborhoods. I spent my late 20s-30s in NYC having both a great and terrible time. It's a hard place to live if you don't have a lot of money. These photographs reveal part of what make it such an amazing city--and are exactly the kinds of things you sometimes fail to notice as you're hustling to the subway and slogging of to work in the snow. This book has me anticipating my next visit when I will slow down and really See the glorious city shown in these photos.
Photographer Susan Kaufman highlights ten NYC neighborhoods in her Walk With Me New York. The photos feature beautiful buildings, storefronts, doors, windows, and streets. They aren't arranged by season, but were taken at different times of the year. My favorite photos are of SoHo (South of Houston Street), "home to the greatest collection of cast-iron architecture in the world." Cast iron features include balconies, railings, fences, and decorative flourishes that give the structures a very distinct look. Most of these buildings were constructed between 1840 and 1880 and might have been destroyed by the Lower Manhattan Expressway Project in the 1960s if urban conservationists hadn't fought for their preservation. As I finished the book, I felt as if I had taken a stroll through NYC neighborhoods that tourists distracted by the bling of Times Square and Broadway might overlook. I am looking forward to her other photo journal of the Hamptons.
Charming details on every page. I loved slowly flipping through this book, learning about the history of certain neighborhoods and the author’s favorite spots. I think I enjoyed the photography so much because they are exactly things I would enjoy photographing myself; charming architectural details, shop fronts, and dream townhomes and carriage houses *swoon*. The only thing I would’ve loved to have added to the book, as a non-New Yorker, is a mini map on the “Favorite Streets” pages that shows WHERE in Manhattan these little maps are.
I've never had an interest in visiting New York City or the surrounding area (I drove by it from a distance once on my way to Salem, MA). Until now. This book surprised me. I didn't expect to find New York to by so charming. There were some photos in this book that I would've happily gotten lost in.
If I ever visit the area, this book will be by my side the entire time.
I spent my twenties in NYC galavanting through these neighborhoods and going through this book was so nostalgic. I loved it! The photos were beautiful and I loved the authors little anecdotes about their favorite places as well as the historical tidbits. Definitely recommend.
I would give this more stars if I could! It's such a beautiful book. I've always wanted to go to New York, and this is almost like being there. The photography is stunning. The words are so beautiful. It's such a beautiful experience to read this book and look at the beauty of New York. Stunning!!
New York bzw. "😊
These are pretty photos of historical areas in New York that you usually don't see. There are beautiful, old houses, unique architecture, and lots of greenery. You can almost imagine walking down these streets and visiting the shops, strolling in the parks, and explore the many nooks and crannies throughout.Of course I never want to visit New York but with photos books like this I don't actually have to go there.
This was not very memorable. I just came back from a New York trip and wanted a reminder. I thought the pictures were repetitive. Doesn't help that nearly all the photos I recall are taken at eye-level. And nothing from the tourist spots. I get that the author spent a lot of time in New York so she doesn't care for those. Not for me.
Susan Kaufman captures stunning photographs of New York's most beloved neighborhoods, helping this frequent tourist better appreciate their history and architecture. Moreover, the hand-drawn maps at the end of each chapter highlight key demarcations for each neighborhood - very useful!
Gorgeous gorgeous gorgeous. A photography book of NYC's beautiful streets, corners, and nooks & crannies in some of its most charming neighborhoods. A veritable bucket list for NYC walks and exploration.
When you are walking in New York, you almost always have a destination or a purpose. You miss these doorways, buildings, and little streets that show up in this book. When you are in New York, take some time to look around.
What a spectacular journey of New York’s quaint neighborhoods as seen in all seasons. I loved it! As a midwesterner-I have always dreamed of living in these iconic neighborhoods. Well done-hope to grab your other books.
I read this book the day before a NYC trip in hopes of discovering some new spots to visit while I was there. While it succeeded in helping me get more in the mood for the trip, I didn't get any inspiration from it.
There were some great photos in this book but also a lot of repetitive ones. The author mentions that she started taking pictures during her walks to post on Instagram, and I definitely get the social media feel throughout the book. I know the author really intended for the book to highlight the cozier, quieter side of NYC, but all the aesthetic storefront and quant residential photos felt repetitive. I think the book would have benefited from showing some busier areas, some landmarks, and some vantage points that aren't eye level.
I'm happy to have read this book, and I did screenshot some photos from it, but I would not recommend this book unless you're looking for something to very causally flip through. I probably would have enjoyed it more as a coffee table book.
This is a personal tour of some of the more photogenic exteriors in the author's favorite NYC neighborhoods - from the iconic brownstone townhomes to converted mews and grander limestone mansions on the beautiful tree-lined and cobbled streets. Included at the end of each chapter are simple illustrated maps if the reader is inclined to see the architectural gems for themselves and is lucky enough to have the opportunity. If you enjoy great design and historic buildings, you will love this book, and I'd recommend it as a gift to like-minded friends as well.
I wish I could have grown up in new york city. The whole place has taken on this otherworldly appeal in my mind which has grown into a weird consistent interest in all books I see about the place. The pictures were wonderful and I loved the way they were framed so that is gave a down to earth sort of feel.
