Slipping Away - One man's battle with Alzheimer's

Rate this book
A first-hand account of a daughter seeing her father slowly slip away.

The story of one man's battle with Alzheimer's. Alzheimer's disease is a progressive disease that gradually deteriorates the brain.

To witness such a strong, independent man, renowned for his irrepressible zest for life, slip away bit by bit into one that struggled with his children's names is heart-breaking but a story that should be told.

There were funny moments along the way and we still don't know if we laughed hysterically at these because they were genuinely funny, or because if we didn't laugh we'd simply crack up.

“Someone once described it to me like a very tall bookcase with all the books on it containing your memories. Your younger years are books on the bottom shelves, middle years are books in the middle and latter years at the very top. Imagine that the bookcase is unsteady and starts to rock from side to side. Books on the top shelves are the ones to slowly fall out first with the lower shelves taking longer to dislodge. This would explain why people can’t often remember what they did yesterday but can vividly recall events from their childhood.”

This was a therapeutic read, a comfort book I started after my own grandmother passed away from Alzheimer’s disease. I think there was something rather charming and relieving in this book, in that it brought a sense of companionship to anyone who has dealt with or is dealing this experience. The heart of the book comes down to just how much George was cared for by his family and how well Lynette captured and told this tragic event. I’m very thankful I read this book, and I’m very thankful to the author for sharing her experience with the world.

My LO has been diagnosed with Alzheimer's officially for 5 years. Memory was lost, didn't remember his mother, or past life, acted like a 12 yr old. he was 75, He had some terrible night as he kept asking to go to the bathroom and get up at night. The doctor prescribed a sleeping pill (zolpidem), but it had a very bad side effect on him (delusions and hallucinations) and we decided not to give it any more and went for the Neuro X program that was introduced to us by his primary care doctor, he was on the Neuro X program for Alzheimer’s disease from Uine Health Centre for 6 months. The treatment relieved symptoms significantly, After the treatment he’s all of a sudden back active again, almost all his symptoms are gone, no signs of agitations, his sleeps pattern are back to normal. His memory loss has greatly improved and he tells stories about his past life, we got the Neuro X program from uinehealthcentre. com. I want to clarify that my comment is not a paid promotion or any form of advertisement. I am absolutely confident that this program offers a viable solution and hope someone find it helpful.

This was a free book on Amazon. This book is about a man in England, written by the daughter about her father's slipping away into Alzheimer's. I felt for the family, when having to make the difficult decision to move the father into a home where he would be taken care of, and not always misplacing and losing things. There were also pictures of the father and family. I just really felt for this family trying their best to keep the father's dignity for as long as possible.

Oh so true! Having been through this with both my parents I found this such comfort that others felt the guilt and sadness of what this horrible disease does to a family.I would recommend this book to anyone who is new to looking after a parent with Alzheimer’s.

Very good and all too often true account of how Alzheimer’s destroys the people you love most and who have loved and cared for you.

I enjoyed every word.

When I began reading this book I expected it to just be a story about how the cruel disease of Alzheimer’s affected one family. But it was much more than that; it could have been my family’s story and that of countless others. Lynnette’s open, humorous and candid writing, touched me to the core and I felt that I was with her every step of the way.

Excellent read.

Really enjoyed this book due to how personal and informative it was.
The last chapter was heartbreaking as we can all pin point events in the pandemic lockdown that were hard but to loose a loved one in a care home that you were not allowed to have any physical presence let alone physical contact with is absolutely heartbreaking.
The last part about 'what they don't tell you' was really good and something for me to consider with my grandparents in their future.

A lovely tribute to her father!

An honest and very moving account of what happens to a person who develops dementia and how it impacts that person's life and the lives of those who love him. The author writes with both affection and humour. The impact of covid visiting restrictions on care home residents and their families is harrowing. I would thoroughly recommend this book!

slipping away

A really poignant but humorous book, beautifully written. I really feel like I knew Lynettes Dad, she described his character and personality so well, I cried at times and laughed at times while reading this book.
I loved the way the family could literally laugh in the face of adversity but deal with the situation with such kindness and understanding.

Slipping Away, so true

I read this book, cause my dad has dementia. And I understood everything that Lynnette said in the book. It is the worst disease ever. Thank you for writing it!
