U potrazi za svojom vlastitošću, Jules i Salomé kroče stopama starogrčkog junaka ploveći brodom koji nosi njegovo ime: Odysseusom. Kao i Odisej nekoć davno, njihov će se brod na svom putu do mirne luke suočiti s vječito nemirnim morima sudbine. Jules Toulet, zagonetni slikar s kraja 19. stoljeća, izgubio je Annu, svoju muzu. Onih nekoliko pisama koje je od nje primio održavaju na životu njegovu nadu u ponovni susret, ne dopuštajući mu da se vrati slikanju. Lutajući Istanbulom, nastoji pronaći stvaralački duh koji ga je krasio u mladosti. Slomljena srca i praznih džepova, ondje upoznaje kapetanicu Salomé koja ga, budući da se i sama zanima za slikarstvo, prima na svoj tajanstveni brod. Bolje rečeno, računa na njegovu pomoć u pronalasku slikara Ammôna. Zašto? Što želi od njega? Kakvu priču krije ta mrgodna žena koja ne poznaje strah? Tko je ona?

Diese Graphic Novel überzeugt durch ihre gewaltigen Bilder. Es ist ein wahres Kunstbuch. Schwer und hochwertig verarbeitet.
Inhaltlich folgen die Lesenden zum einen Jules, einem mittellosen Maler auf der Suche nach einer vergangenen Liebe und zum anderen Salome, einer jungen Kapitänin auf der Suche nach sich selbst. Zwei Irrfahrten, die sich kreuzen und auf ihrer Reise gegenseitig befruchten.
Anfangs wirkte die Story etwas plump, gewann aber zunehmend an Komplexität. Für meinen Geschmack hätten die Dialoge ruhig ein noch höheres Niveau erreichen dürfen, um den unglaublichen Bildern das Wasser reichen zu können. Allerdings gewinnt die Handlung zunehmend an unerwarteter Tiefe. Die Vergangenheit Salomes zieht weite Kreise in Ihre Zukunft und erinnert an den zyklischen Verlauf der Odyssee.
Der Zeichenstil beeindruckt wirklich auf jeder Seite und hätte das Buch auch ohne Text wunderbar auskommen lassen. Vor allem die Augen und Gewässer sind eindrucksvoll dargestellt. Ich habe mehr geschaut, denn gelesen und war schlussendlich wirklich beeindruckt.

L’auteur et illustrateur Emmanuel Lepage est un maître de la bande dessinée. Depuis une dizaine d’années, il s’est fait connaître comme un solide scénariste, habile et fin, et un illustrateur hors du commun, dont chaque album se révèle une œuvre d’art en soi. Les voyages d’Ulysse, qui vient de remporter le grand prix 2017 de l’Association des critiques et journalistes de bande dessinée, en est une autre preuve. Le personnage central, une femme à forte personnalité, pilote L’Odysseus sur la Méditerranée, à la recherche d’une œuvre du peintre Ammôn Kazacz. La trame narrative est prétexte à évoquer l’odyssée d’Ulysse entreprise il y quelque deux millénaires, mais aussi le passé trouble de l’héroïne plus grande que nature. Les planches alternent entre le sépia et les couleurs vives, ce qui fait que chacune des trois parties offre une signature picturale forte. Rarement une bande dessinée ne m'a autant captivé, un chef d'oeuvre du genre. Que j'ai lue une première fois pour connaître l'histoire et une deuxième, pour rester imprégné de l'univers d'Ulysse. Quel travail admirable!

C’était très très sympa comme lecture ! J’ai eu du mal à rentrer dans l’histoire, mais une fois prise par l’intrigue c’était génial !

Un bijou, autant sur le fond que la forme. Une histoire de famille, de femmes, d'hommes, de peines, de parents, d'amours, de découvertes, de recherches, avec des personnages complexes et forts. Le tout illustré avec des couleurs parfois éclatantes, parfois plus discrètes mais rehaussées par des jeux de lumières et de contrastes au rendu si beau et expressif. Je suis restée béa sur certaines planches de longues minutes à me perdre dans la beauté de certains dessins.

Chef d’œuvre tout simplement. L'histoire est belle et envoutante, et les dessins sont juste splendides. On peut rester parfois plusieurs minutes sur un dessin ou une planche, tellement c'est magnifique, beau, vivant. Emmanuel Lepage est vraiment un très grand dessinateur (qu'est-ce que j'aimerais pouvoir dessiner comme ça).

Je suis impressionnée par la beauté de cette BD. Salomé est le portrait d'une femme forte et brave qui sort complètement de l'ordinaire. Très jolie histoire.

This graphic novel has all the elements that are required. Good story, great art and I love stories about sailing and sea and mythology.....but it's still 3 stars rating.
First of all - the art! It is truly amazing and on moments maybe it's so great that is too pretentious. It feels like you are looking at the paintings and that's a great thing but I've got the feeling that the story here is in service of the "paintings" instead otherwise and I prefer when it is otherwise. Some scenes are there just to look great and they are amazingly drawn and epic but they're not always necessary for the story.
I must say that Lepage drawings of the ships at sea are the best I ever saw and I would love to put it on my wall as a stand alone art.
The story has a good plot - woman Salomé who's captain at the ship hires young artist Jules to travel with him and help him find another artists Ammôn Kazacz. During the journey story rolls out and we discover Salomé's story and motives for search for Ammôn and thats a good story. Everything is spiced up with Greek mythology and story of Odysseus.
So, the bone of the story is good but there's not enough "meat" on it. Except the main character Salomé other characters are just supporting roles and they are just fulfilling Salomé's story, they are not developed enough. Even the Jules's story about girl Anne are lacking of development and it is just a punch line for Salomé. It's the "old school" of story telling with main character on journey getting to places and connecting the dots until the end. Like I said, there are scenes and pages with great art but not that much important for the story and at the end when Salomé meets Ammôn it felt to me that ending isn't also developed enough, like it's lacking of more pages to go a bit deeper. Even the finale feels like check up point.
It helped a lot to me that story is about sailing and sea that made me enjoy this book since I love sailing.
So, if you want to see beautifully drawn graphic novel or you are fan of sailing and mythology this is a must read for you but if you are looking for deep story with strong characters, maybe reconsider.

On embarque aux côtés de Jules Touquet et Salomé Ziegler à bord de l'Odysseus, unis par un but commun : retrouver la trace du peintre Ammôn Kazacq. Au fil de leur périple, les liens personnels qui les rattachent à ses œuvres se dévoilent, chaque tableau faisant écho à une étape marquante du voyage d'Ulysse, mais pas que !
J’ai énormément apprécié l’univers de la navigation, ainsi que le style graphique.

Une oeuvre immensément jolie qui nous renvoie à une épopée grecque, à une rencontre entre deux personnages centraux étant à la quête de vérité et au voyage en général.
Les illustrations sont exquises et je comprends tout à fait pourquoi ce livre a eu le grand prix de la critique ACBD 2017.

Me ha gustado mucho la historia, con varios saltos temporales y grandes pinceladas de la odisea. Impresionante el dibujo, de lo mejor que he visto en mucho tiempo... muchas láminas parecen verdaderos cuadros.
Lo he leído en francés, y supongo que lo traducirán pronto al castellano.

Une œuvre d'art. Si ce n'était de quelques raccourcis narratifs qui m'ont fait me demander si je n'avais pas sauté une page, ce livre aurait valu 5 étoiles.

Diese Graphic Novel weiß zu begeistern! Mit einer facettenreichen Geschichte und großartigen Zeichnungen ist eine Ode an das große Werk von Homer erschaffen worden. Und das von einem Künstler, der schon mit der Graphic Novel »Ar-Men« gezeigt hat, wie beeindruckende Kunstwerke entstehen.
Vielfalt
In diesem Buch wird die Geschichte mit Zeichnungen, Skizzen, Aquarallen und Ölgemälden erzählt. Mit Werken, die schon in anderen (mittlerweile vergriffenen) Büchern erschienen oder unveröffentlicht in der Schublade der Künstler auf ihre Veröffentlichung gewartet haben. Eine Kombination, die erahnen lässt, dass dem Leser eine Ode an die Kunst präsentiert wird.
Denn hier wird nicht einfach die »Odysee« von Homer nacherzählt, sondern dieser Epos ist lediglich als Basis für eine Geschichte um Liebe, Kunst, Verlust und Schmerz. In geschickt gewählten Zeitebenen begleitet der Leser einen mittellosen Künstler auf der Suche nach seiner Muse und begleitet ihn auf seiner ganz persönlichen Odysee. Eine emotional erzählte Geschichte, die den Leser zu berühren weiß.
Die Zeichnungen, Illustrationen und Bilder sind dabei einfach nur großartig und werden entsprechend großflächig über eine Doppelseite hinweg dem Leser präsentiert. Dabei sprechen viele Kunstwerke für sich selbst und gehören eigentlich auf Leinwand in eine eigene Ausstellung. So oder so lohnt es sich, das Buch mehrmals in die Hände zu nehmen, um die Vielschichtigkeit zu erfahren.

Nur selten gelingt es, mit einer Graphic Novel ein solches Kunstwerk zu schaffen. Dieses Buch ist über jede Zweifel erhaben und in vielerlei Hinsicht einfach nur großartig. Sowohl Optik als auch Erzählung konnten mich packen, verzaubern und entführen. Für dieses Buch gibt es nur eine Empfehlung: Unbedingt lesen!

Dobila sam ovaj album.na poklon od dragog prijatelja i drago mi je da sam na taj način počela čitati žanr za koji sam ranije bila prelijena. Riječ je o ozbiljnom pristupu stripu kao mediju, i likovnost i ideja i likovi, sve je grandiozno zamišljeno i sve te ideje su dobro provedene u djelo.
Podjeća me na Nošeni vjetrom, vjerojatno zbog iste kombinacije neobično hrabre žene i broda, a i zbog izrazite filmičnosti stripa i zbog brižno posloženog scenarija.

Après la bd-reportage, Emanuel Lepage s'est lancée dans cette fiction recoupant le récit de l'Odyssée et les déboires d'une capitaine à la recherche de son Ithaque. Merveilleusement bien structuré!
