About the author

B. Jeyamohan (also credited as Jayamohan) is one of the most influential contemporary, Tamil and Malayalam writer and literary critic from Nagercoil in Kanyakumari District in the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu.

He entered the world of Tamil literature in the 1990s, Jeyamohan has had impacted the Tamil literary landscape as it emerged from the post-modern phase. His best-known and critically acclaimed work is Vishnupuram, a deeply layered fantasy set as a quest through various schools of Indian philosophy and mythology. His other well-known novels include Rubber, Pin Thodarum Nizhalin Kural, Kanyakumari, Kaadu, Pani Manithan, Eazhaam Ulagam, and Kotravai. His writing is heavily influenced by the works of humanitarian thinkers Leo Tolstoy and Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. Drawing on the strength of his life experiences and extensive travel around India, Jeyamohan is able to re-examine and interpret the essence of India's rich literary and classical traditions.

அப்பா முதலில் வழங்கல் துறையில் வேலைபார்த்தார். பின் பத்திரப்பதிவுத்துறையில் எழுத்தராக வேலைபார்த்து ஓய்வு பெற்றார். அவரது பணிக்காலத்தில் பெரும்பகுதி அருமனை பத்திரப்பதிவு அலுவலகத்தில் கழிந்தது. 1984ல் தன் அறுபத்தி ஒன்றாம் வயதில் தற்கொலை செய்துகொண்டார்.

'One Million Footsteps' is far more than just another crime novel. It unfolded as a thoughtful, quietly powerful story that weaves psychological depth, cultural memory, and moral questioning into something that stays with you well beyond the final page. The author, Jeyamohan has showcased is most introspective nature here, unhurried and probing, allowing ideas and emotions to surface naturally. The English translation is portrayed carefully and considerate, while preserving the depth, rhythm, and emotional weight of Jeyamohan’s Tamil voice while ensuring that the richness of this layered, culturally grounded narrative reaches a far broader audience without losing its essence.

At its heart, 'One Million Footsteps' felt like a quiet, thoughtful reflection on human nature, society, and morality, using the framework of a detective story rather than being driven by it. I found Jeyamohan use crime as a way to look closely at why people act the way they do. Through their choices and contradictions, the story gently reveals deeper truths about love, ego, honour, desire, and the enduring pull of power.

The story, comes alive through Ousepachan, a maverick, world-weary former police officer whose voice quietly steers the entire narrative. Ousepachan is wry, sharply self-aware, and often irreverent, someone far more interested in people than procedures. He doesn’t linger over the technicalities of crime; instead, his investigations move fluidly through the lived landscapes of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. the story slowly opened up layers of personal histories, inherited burdens, fractured relationships, and a gradual moral unravelling, making the journey feel as much inward as investigative. Jeyamohan’s writing is hard to pin down — thoughtful and reflective without ever feeling distant, enriched by wit, quiet humour, and philosophical pauses.

I believe 'One Million Footsteps' will resonate most with readers who enjoy character-driven, philosophically inclined crime fiction that explores society, culture, and moral complexity, especially those drawn to introspective narratives and South Asian literary voices.

🔆 இதுவரை படித்த கதைகள் இருந்து முற்றிலும் மாறுபட்ட கதைகள் இவை. ஐந்து கதைகள் கொண்டது இந்த புத்தகம். ஔசேப்பச்சன் இந்த கதைகளை வரும் துப்பறியும் கதாபாத்திரம். உணவகம் ஒன்று நண்பர்களுடன் உட்கார்ந்து கொண்டு ஒரு கையில் சாராயமும், மறு கையில் பீப் -உம் சாப்பிட்டுக் கொண்டே, தான் சந்தித்த வழக்குகளில் அவர்களுக்கு இருந்த சவால்கள், திருப்பங்களையும் தனக்கே உரித்தான பானியில் தனது நண்பர்களுடன் பகிர்ந்து கொண்டார் ஔசேப்பச்சன்.

🔆 முதல் கதை வேட்டு ஜானம்மா சிறிய அளவில் ஒரு உணவுக் கடையை நடத்தி வருகிறாள். அந்த கடையில் தான் ஔசேப்பச்சன் தனது நண்பர்களுடன் பீப் பொரியலை ருசி பார்த்துக் கொண்டிருந்தான். ஜானம்மாவும் அவளது அக்கா பார்வதியும் சிறுவயதிலேயே சர்க்கஸ்க்கு போய்விட, அவர்களின் அனுபவங்களும், அங்கிருந்து எப்படி வெளியே வந்தார்கள் என்பதுதான்

🔆 இரண்டாம் கதை கைமுக்கு சிவராஜ பிள்ளை நாகர்கோவில் கோர்ட் வாசலில் டைப் செய்பவர். அவருக்கு ஒரு மகன் இரு மகள்கள். மகன் பள்ளியில் நல்ல மதிப்பெண் பெறவை கல்லூரியில் சேர்த்து விட்டார். சில ஆண்டுகளிலே நல்ல வேலைக்கு செல்ல இவரும் வேலையை விட்டுவிட்டு சென்னைக்கு போய்விட்டார். பின்பு தான் அவர் மகன் ஒரு திருடன் எனவும் கோடிக்கணக்கில் அவன் திருடியதும் தெரிய வந்தது. இவ்வளவு நாட்கள் மென்பொருள் துறையில் வேலை செய்து வருவது போல அவன் நாடகமாடியதும் போலீஸ் விசாரணையில் தெரியவந்தது. அவன் என்ன ஆனான் என்பது கதை.

Brilliant stories based on the central character Ouchepachchan, a nihilistic former police offer, these stories are memories that he shares form cases he had resolved. Exploring themes as varied as the continuation of mental illness and it's link to an event historical past, to the customs and traditions of Mapla muslims these stories are truly unique.

குற்றப்பின்னணியில் மனித மனங்களின் பகுத்தறியமுடியா ஆட்டங்களை இங்கே வைக்கிறார் ஜெமோ. அந்த சாஹிப் பாத்திரம் ஒரு பெரும் தரிசனம் எனில் சில நேரமே வரும் ராதாமணி மட்டும் சளைத்தவளா என்ன? மனித மனங்களின் உண்மை தரிசனத்தை நேரில் காணமுடியாமல்.... ஜெமோ வின் வரிகளில் கூறவேண்டுமாயின்.

இறுதிக் கதையான "கைமுக்கில்" வரும் சிவராஜ்பிள்ளையும் அவர் மகன் மஹேஷும் அடேங்கப்பா... கருணை என்ற மட்டமான ஒன்றை அளிப்பது பெரிது அல்ல, அதை வாங்குபவன் இடத்தில இருந்து அதை அணுகவேண்டும். அப்போது தெரியும் அது ஆன்மாவரை பாயும் கூர்வாள் என்று.

And this is why you should read translations!

One Million Footsteps is a collection of stories featuring Jeyamohan's beloved cop, Ousepachan. The inspector narrates his tales to his friends. What works is the banter among friends and the natural way in which the story is told. It's like a conversation where a story gets interjected with questions and comments.

V Ishwarya has translated the book well. Of course, reading it in Tamil would have been a different experience because a lot of dialogue would have flowed more naturally. I have been reading a lot of translations and it's books like this which convince me to keep finding more translated works.

Big thank you to Juggernaut book for giving me the opportunity to read this book, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Detective fiction usually relies on a lot of suspense, crazy twists, and the sheer satisfaction of seeing a mystery neatly unfold. One Million Footsteps is different. Written originally in Tamil, it is about Ousepachan, a cynical and sarcastic former police officer. He is narrating these stories to a group of friends over multiple glasses of alcohol, and his investigations are more about peeling away the layers of human behaviour, rather than simply just solving the mystery.

The stories are set across the cultural landscapes of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Relationships, family honour, generational grudges, and social tensions shape the crimes that take place here. A thought that crossed my mind multiple times was just how ordinary the motivations behind these acts felt. Jealousy, love, wounded pride, and desire for power are all common human emotions that lie at the heart of these crimes.

Ousepachan is a fascinating narrator. His narration is sharp and includes indecent jokes, typical in conversations among older men. Sometimes, these jokes felt a bit uncomfortable to read, but they also reflect the social attitudes of the time and the environment from which the stories come.

The stories are philosophical, and at times, some seemed to drag on for a bit too long. If you come in expecting tightly plotted crime stories (like I did), the pacing might feel slower than usual, but the psychological depth more than makes up for it.

At its heart, One Million Footsteps is a sharp, philosophical, sometimes darkly funny piece of detective fiction that focuses more on human nature than on simply solving a mystery. It isn't your typical detective story, but definitely a memorable one.
