He didn’t ask to be part of this game . . . but sure as Hell won’t be a pawn. The problem is, vengeance comes at a price, and the devils always take their due.
This was a interesting story that had a great storyline and characters. Chase was definitely a guy that had a attitude problem but you soon realize that he’s using it to hide his real attitude. This a a great beginning to a new series! And I can’t wait for more! I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
I was a little worried if I would actually like this book once I started reading it but once I got a few chapters in I didn't want to put it down. It did get a little overwhelming at times with how many enemies there were and their names and the like but other then that for the most part I enjoyed this story. I liked seeing all the different characters and quickly fell in love with Loch, the wity lepercon, Simon, the hilarious werewolf, Joy, the always sweet, caring and understanding girlfriend of our main character Chase. So he took a while for me to really like but I liked the growth I saw in him, however he wasn't my favorite character. That right would go to the fearless Amazon Padia. She stole the story for me right away with her personality and her strength. There is no shortage of danger, adventure, humor, heartache, loss and death in this story. If you are into the supernatural reads then this is one i think you should check out. The characters alone will have you falling in love with the story and wondering where their journey will take them next and did I mention that ending? Like what the heck lol.
This story has a variety of supernatural characters. Chase can be a jerk, but as the story develops I realized he has a big heart. There was plenty of magic, action, and snark. I can't wait to see what madness Chase gets into next!
Awakening: Realm Killer (Book One) by C. L. Brown is a sassy urban fantasy filled with action, danger and myth. The world CL Brown has created exists in a world that is separate to ours, but also a reflection of what it is truly like: filled with monsters and danger.
I greatly enjoyed the character of Chase Ambrose. He starts off as a fairly immature, care-free young man, however when he comes out of a coma he quickly rises to the new challenges which face him in a previously unknown supernatural world. There are many redeeming factors about his character, and early on he is quick to action when he is learning to use his newfound magic powers. His character is perfect for this book, and his quips and retorts really make him a compelling lead as he fights through a whole manner of monsters and demons.
The storyline and writing are full of imagination, which was really enjoyable as sometimes urban fantasy can feel a little samey. CL Brown teases us with a rich world, one crafted over the course of the book, and it is really engaging. I kind of feel like this world is a character in itself, as it is filled with a gritty charm which is uncovered as Chase explores it.
The ending was a little lackluster in the sense that it left a few loose ends. No matter though, this is a start to a really interesting series by a talented and engaging author. I look forward to where CL Brown takes us next.
This is a Dark Urban Fantasy, with equal parts of snark and action. I just can’t say whether I like this guy Chase Ambrose or not, but he is definitely compelling. Chase has come to realize that the supernatural world real and they want him. His family is in danger, and he will protect them no matter what. He throws the fight back in their faces and says come on and get me if you dare! Brown is a gifted, talented author. His work pulled me in from beginning to end and held my attention. The world building is detailed and imaginative. This book has strong, well developed characters and an interesting story line that keeps you turning the pages. I recommend this book and would read more books by this author. I gave this honest, voluntary review after being given a free copy of the book.
This was an interesting book with characters that leave you guessing their intentions. It has a twisty plot-line that keeps you guessing and intrigued. A very good book.

The author gave a warning in the beginning of the book to prepare you for the main character Chase and to be honest wasn’t certain whom the author was talking about. While Chase was immature at times, he never struck me as an anti-hero. When he woke up from his coma he was interested in only one woman. When his parents were in trouble, he tried to defend them. He took all of the self-defense lessons that he learned because of them and used them in the best way possible. Yes, he was a little impatient and mouthy at times, but for me he was a regular young immature hero type.
There was a lot happening, heartache, betrayal, loss, love and a lot of action. The secondary characters were really good and kept the story going. For me after a while the action seemed too repetitive and a predictability set in.
It was good to see Chase grow up and come into himself and his power. Loved Padia the Amazon she was a baaadddaaazzz female. Joy his love interest was also nice and seemed to go with the flow until things changed.
The ending seemed to fizzle and left too many strings dangling. The higher ups causing issues and splintering everything is such an over done cliché in many stories that it was just an eye roll for me.
So while it was a fun light read, I think it could have been more with some tightening up and not resorting to overdone cliches could have really elevated this story.

It wasn’t bad. The meat of the story was good, it’s just that the timing was kind of disjointed and unclear. Apparently the book’s story takes place over 2 months, but based on the way it was laid out it really sounded like it took more like two weeks. The snark was entertaining, the plot has some decent weight to it, and many of the characters were enjoyable (including the MC). It’s just that the transitions in time weren’t really there, which made for some really confusing leaps. This is book 1; there is a sequel, a prequel, and a novella (novella review coming soon). I want to know how everything resolves, but I’m not dying to grab book 2 immediately to find out.
Chase, the MC, is marketed as a total dick; a partying, promiscuous, prick. Maybe he was before the story’s timeline picks up, but we never really get to see that. You get the feeling that he partied a lot and was willing to have casual hookups, but he doesn’t come across as a tool, just that he likes to have a good time. With the pacing of the actual book, we don’t get much of a chance to get to know any of the characters particularly well, including the MC. I really would have liked to have seen more of who the characters are outside of crisis mode. I think they all have a lot of potential, but this story didn’t quite hit it for me. There wasn’t much emotion for me, just a lot of mayhem and blurred timelines.
I’m mixed about this book and would’ve given 3.5 stars if that were an option. On the one hand I love the paranormal/mythological storyline and intriguing ideas, all of which are well written and with some interesting differences from others in this genre. On the other hand, there were too many fight scenes for me, which imho all went on for too long, so I ended up skipping most and skim reading the last couple of sentences of them. I like it when I get drawn into a book/series, so that it feels like I’m actually there, which didn’t happen here as I was just reading it and didn’t really connect with or feel for any of the characters. Don’t get me wrong, like I said, great, interesting ideas and if you love plenty of action and fight scenes, then this book is definitely for you! I’ll be reading the next book as I’d like to know how things work out for the characters, but there was something missing for me that made it just an ok read rather than a great one.
The awesomeness continues! Chase is an all around bad ass who fights for those he loves, no matter the cost. And Padia and Simon? Fantastic friends. I would certainly take them all as my ride or die.
The world building is epic, the fights are full on, and the family element is completely concrete. Rarely do you ever find such strong relationships even in fiction.
I would live in this world if I could. That's how much I have loved this series. I cannot wait for Realm Killer 3. (I read the series backwards)
The story is very easy to follow and I don't get lost in the wording. I absolutely love Chase's choice of weapons.
I, 1000 percent recommend not only this book but the entire series. C. L. Brown as a writer of urban fantasy is a genius. I have never enjoyed any fantasy series as much as I have this one.
I enjoyed this book. Chase was a hoot, the kind of guy that always had things go right for him until her woke up from a coma and found out all was not as it seemed. Non-stop action, betrayal, surprises, and good characters. Liked the mix of myth and modern day. Chase never seemed to catch a break and was a bit mouthy yet tried his hardest to do mostly good. A thriller, urban fantasy and mystery all rolled into a good start to a series. And even at the end there was still a lot of mysteries needing to be solved. Really liked it and cannot wait to see what happens next. Found it hard to put down.
This was a fantastic ride! This book turned up the volume and kept it going throughout. WOW! I am so excited I got a chance to read this book and will totally be on board for the second book. This book ticked almost every single one of my boxes and I couldn't be happier. C L Brown, I am totally grateful for the time you let me spend in this world. You are one talented writer. I can't wait for more from you. Thanks.
I feel I gave this book a fair chance. I imagine that writing the set-up for a series can be very difficult to do well, so I kept trying. Finally, I had to give it up as a no-go. The characters were not appealing. The MC had no redeeming qualities, except in the eyes of his parents. I don't know. There just wasn't anything there that made me want to read the rest.
This is a great start to a new series. The character work and story line were well written and kept my attention from start to finish. I can't wait to see what happens next.
