The Wizard's Return

Rate this book
From his legendary enchantment (or death) in roughly 500 AD to the present age, Merlin has captured the imagination and the longing of our hearts. What is it about the famous mage that is so captivating, and perhaps so missing from our current time, that we can’t resist putting stock in the notion that Merlin, along with King Arthur, is not dead, but only sleeping and will someday, in the time of our greatest need, return? What if the souls of those ancient folk are still among us and...what if Merlin had a daughter?

A Mythological Mystery

No spoilers. In The Wizard’s Return, book one of the Rowan Branch trilogy, Pam Collins artfully weaves the modern and mythological into a reality-bending mystery. The reader travels between 500AD Wales to the present in the United States and England. A subtle shift in language and style grounds the reader in each setting. There are many dimensions to this novel; fantasy, gender fluidity, history, humanity’s relationship with nature, and most of all the story.

The protagonist is Raina, an ex-professor who seems to have lost everything; her job, her home, and her daughter. When she moves into a cottage on a lake that had once belonged to her mother, Raina is thrown into a mystical world that challenges her intellectual and scientific outlook. She begins a reluctant journey to self-knowledge. What she encounters on that road awakens her to the relationship between humanity and nature, and that there is more to our surroundings than meets the eye. The Wizard’s Return made me wish the Arthurian legends were true, and think that on a certain level, they are. It is one of the most intriguing books I’ve read in 2021, and I recommend it for anyone interested in exploring new worlds. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.

I'm really enjoying this book about King Arthur, Merlin, and Morgan being reincarnated into modern day people. The book spans time, from 500 AD to the present to 1000 AD and back to the present. It's well paced and has just the right amount of metaphor, only when you need it. What intrigues me most about the book is the underlying theme of whether using magic on others is ethical.
