Rate this book
Harrison is alone and hurting with his memories gone, but Toby shows him that love can heal even the most broken of hearts.

After losing his entire team in a roadside bomb, Harrison is left with a traumatic brain injury, a broken body, and scars on his heart that might never heal. Staying at the Ellery Mountain Veterans Center is the first step in healing, but short-term memories evade him, and the only thing he trusts is the love of Barney, his support dog.

Until he meets Toby.

Toby lands the chance of a lifetime, using his horticultural skills to aid in working with veterans during their physical and mental recovery. Meeting Harrison on his first day goes badly, but there is something between them that could be more than just friendship.

Oops, forgot to come back to this one.

RJ originally released this as a newsletter serial week by week but I held off on reading it as I wanted to wait til it was done.

It was worth it.

This is a sympathetic portrayal of the effects of combat and survivor guilt and how someone can offer a way by which a life can be given new purpose- but not cured or 'got over' by some magic dick.

Harrison isn't ever going to be free from the affects of seeing his Army buddies die and him being the only survivor.

But working with Toby in the gardens at the veteran's centre ground him and provide a connection he's not had with life for some time.

It's a slow burn, and that's as it should be, but there's no doubting it once these two men throw their all into making it work.

One of my favourites in the series .

RJ has a knack for good, sweet stories. And the format they started as doesn't change that.
I know it was released as a newsletter serial at first, but knowing how fast I read and how impatient I am, I know I wouldn't be able to wait between chapters before going insane. And while the book in itself isn't a high action book with cliffhangers every chapter, I'm glad we get it in one collected book.
The story is good. It can be read as a stand alone, and while the reader that goes into it won't know the finer details (like the creation of the center and some relationships in secondary characters), there's definitely enough information to hold the story on. I liked the previous ones, so I do recommend reading them if you're on the mood for cute and sweet.
Having a character with a traumatic brain injury is an interesting change to the usual veteran story, where most deal with either PTSD or a battle wound, or alternatively come out apparently unscathed. It does change the dynamic between Toby and Harrison, but it gives it a little something different that not just works, but itmakes the story stand out. I like it.

This book is wonderful, fantastic, emotional, sweet, all the feels and so much love! I did not want to put it down! I have read the serials RJ sends out by email but you have to get this book even if you read this as a serial. Oh my heart, I love Toby, his giving heart and patience. I wanted to hug Harrison hard, a hero, slowly working his way back to life, the love for Barney his dog, the determination to move forward.

This is truly an inspirational story!! It is definitely a story of courage, hope and true love. I shed some tears, smiled a lot, and was just so happy for these two guys!! You won’t regret reading it!!! Hundreds of stars ⭐️ if they would let me give that many!!

The sweet gardener and the injured Marine, find peace....and much more.
Blue-eyed Toby, caring, strong and joyful,

has been waiting to see if the Veteran's Center accepted his idea.
Harrison is a Marine, post bomb blast,

he has visible and mental scars, a TBI and other injuries, plus a loyal therapy dog in Barney, a black Lab.
As Harrison begins to work in the new garden project, he begins to like it. Harrison keeps his notebook handy to write things down, because his memory is sketchy. Toby is super patient and helpful, and maybe some of that comes from having an Autistic brother.

Harrison has various episodes throughout, and he and Toby have a natural pull, an attraction they can't deny. It's an easy going, slow moving love story, as they tackle obstacles, talk, and have trust in each other.

Barney is an ever present, relief and

awesome support dog for the troubled Harrison.

Eventually the guys have sexy times, but begin with comfort hugs, kisses and hand holding.
Harrison has some things he remembers easily as time goes by, and his and Toby's connection helps.

There is also the caring folks at the Center, and family. We like the way their slide into love is so effortless and natural. I was so proud of Toby for saying "no" to the rich, selfish, misguided lady.
Later on, a sudden event shocks everyone and hope is abundant.

This is a beautiful tale of happiness in times of stress, a romance that blooms from a garden, and a glimpse of what our wounded veterans live with daily.

I simply loved this RJ Scott story !
Highly recommended.
ENJOY !

This story left my heart so Full of Love and Hope and Belief

This is one of the most beautiful, tender, gentle Books I have ever read.   I am completely enthralled, and am forcing myself to read it in small sections - to prolong the pleasure.
Truly, the story is just..... Lovely doesn't seem enough..... Its truly lyrical, like poetry.
The gentle , tender bond these men form, is full of filigree, and you hold your breath at times as they grow, and love....and discover that the beautiful filigree is not just beautiful and elegant --- its strong, and solid - as are Toby and Harrison!
I was Sooo happy to return to Ellery Mountain - but never expected the quantity and power of the Love I would encounter!!!!
Thank you RJ
Thank you

This book really touched my heart.

There is a reason that RJ Scott in on my list of favorite authors and this book continues to solidify that position. The Gardener and the Marine was originally a free newsletter serial but I confess that I didn’t read it then; I wanted to wait until the full story was available because I’m too impatient to wait for weekly installments. I’m not sorry I waited; Toby and Harrison’s love story is going to stick in my mind for quite a while.

Harrison is suffering from a TBI (traumatic brain injury) and PTSD. He survived a bomb while four of his Marine brothers did not. He’s come to the Veteran’s Center in Ellery Mountain to heal and learn how to deal with his survivor’s guilt. Toby has started a new program at the center, using gardening and horticulture to help the wounded veterans heal.

RJ’s detailed description of the struggles that Harrison has dealing with memory loss and retention were at times heartbreaking. At the same time, the detailed description of the coping mechanisms he uses were inspiring.

Toby and Harrison clicked with each other fairly quickly but I would not call this insta-love by any means. It takes time for Toby to gain Harrison’s trust but the bond they eventually form is strong and beautiful.

While I consider this story to be on the sweeter side, conflict is usually good to keep things interesting and RJ is a master at giving her characters challenges to face and The Gardener and the Marine is no exception. Some readers may need to heed the trigger warning for PTSD and past suicide ideation.

While I loved everything about this story, I want to give special notice to a couple of things: Harrison’s service dog, Barney and Toby’s brother, Alec. Barney is Harrison’s touchstone; he helps keep Harrison centered when things become overwhelming for him. Toby’s brother has autism and anyone who follows RJ closely will see bits of her personal experiences in this wonderful story.

Although this book is part of the Ellery Mountain series, it can definitely be read as a standalone. Characters from other books appear in this one but RJ has written the story in such a way that readers won’t be lost if they haven’t read the other books. This is such a wonderful series, though, so I whole heartedly recommend all of the books.

I almost forgot to mention two things… the last chapter introduced two new characters and I was so happy to learn that the next Ellery Mountain book will be about JC and Adrian and, last but certainly not least, the wonderful epilogue for Harrison and Toby was like finding all of my favorite toppings on ice cream sundae. 😊

A copy of this book was provided to me at my request but my review was voluntary and not influenced by the author.

I really enjoyed this one. Possibly my favorite of the series. Scott handled TBI with a great deal of respect - Harrison’s experiences were so real, heartbreaking, and understandable. I enjoyed that she made Toby understanding and caring without becoming a martyr.

Toby & Harrison’s relationship evolves slowly and it was such a treat to watch it bloom. I like that there was no miracle cure or instantaneous perfection. While Harrison did heal quite a bit - things will never be “normal” for him. I cried a few times sharing in the frustration and setbacks. However, I absolutely believed in Harrison & Toby’s HEA.

I've been reading this series from the very beginning and I can honestly say this one really upped the ante. Toby and Harrison are a wonderful couple. Toby's empathy, caring and patience made me adore him. Harrison's strength and perseverance to heal and overcome his injuries had me in tears more than once. This is not a light, fluffy read. This is the story you pick up when you need to have your emotions pulled to and fro, always knowing that this is a story from RJ, so you will be happy by the end. I did not read this story as a weekly newsletter serial, I'm too impatient to wait for the next installment. Now I'm eagerly awaiting JC and Adrian's story!
If you haven't visited Ellery Mountain yet, go grab book 1 and get started!

ARC received from the author for an honest review.

Harrison was injured in a roadside bomb that killed the four men closest to him. Now he's struggling with short-term memory issues. He's in Ellery Mountain to rehab. He meets Toby one of the workers at the rehab that specializes in gardening for rehab. Harrison and Toby immediately hit it off and are navigating a new relationship on top of Harrison's rehab and Toby's new job. Will they be able to work together to make this relationship work?

This is a slow build romance that didn't feel slow. It kept my attention from the beginning. I really liked the chemistry between Harrison and Toby as it felt real. I enjoyed seeing the characters from the previous books. I felt like the author definitely got the feel of what a TBI patient goes through as Harrison felt authentic. It was nice getting a small glimpse of Toby's brother Alec and you can't go wrong with a support dog named Barney.

The Gardener and The Marine is definitely now my favorite of this series that I followed from the start.
I adored Harrison and Toby, and the way Toby knowing how to approached Harrison to get his attention.
RJ made this 'silent' romance between Harrison and Toby so beautiful I enjoyed it so much. Not to mention Harrison support dog, Barney.
I think it's a good idea for memory loss person to make notes like Harrison did with his notebooks.
Harrison made me cry and wanted to hug him like mama bear.
I was glad that Toby gets him wholeheartedly and loving him just the was he was.
I think, of all the stories of this series, The Gardener and The Marine is the best one of this series.

This has got to be one of the most beautifully written books I have had the joy of reading. The story covered the very difficult subjects of head trauma, PTSD and autism but RJ Scott handles these with sensitivity and the writing is so beautiful you feel the pain, frustration and love.

Harrison and Toby are wonderful warm characters that you fall in love with and can get behind and although there are much loved characters from previous books in the series you can read this book as a stand-alone.

The epilogue was so emotional I cried along with Harrison, for all his pain, his lost memories and friends, his hopes and dreams and his love for Toby and his faithful service dog Barney.

I strongly recommend you read this book and I will definitely be re-reading it!

Wow! What a great story! Maybe it is because it is so close to home for me (I was at a military university when Desert Shield/Storm broke out, and many friends shipped out overnight), but I think this might just be my favorite RJ Scott book yet.

Toby is the type of friend that everyone needs. He’s always there when you need him, but he never makes you feel like you can’t do it yourself. Harrison and Barney could let their situation jade them, but instead, they accept the love and support of their friends and find their way through loneliness and fear, inspiring those around them. I cannot wait to see them touch the lives of others, starting with JC and Adrian.

Another wonderful duo that comes together on Ellery Mountain. Broken and battered Harrison feels like his traumatic brain injury is going to keep him alone and unlovable, but working in the garden brings Toby into his life and into his heart. Through patience and understanding the two find that although broken, when together they fit the pieces in each other that were missing. Beautifully written and highly emotional.

This was a book released as a serial in RJ Scott’s newsletter. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

The give and take between Harrison and Tony was enjoyable to see unfold throughout the story.

Harrison is struggling with survivor’s guilt and meets Toby while gardening on the Veteran’s Center Grounds.

They two learn about each other as the story goes - slow development but so worth the wait when they finally admit their feelings.

The Gardener and the Marine has all the feels you could wish for in a romance. This slow burn love story allows the reader to get to know Harrison and Toby as they get to know each other.
Watching Harrison slowly start to heal and seeing the comfort and love he gives and receives from his support dog Barney will melt your heart.
Toby is the perfect match for them.

The Gardener and the Marine was such a tenderhearted story about the power of love! I absolutely adored both Toby and Harrison and their story is so very touching. It’s a romance yes, but it’s also a story about healing and strength and loving someone for who they really are.

Harrison suffered a traumatic brain injury while in the military and is now trying to recover in a dedicated veteran’s recovery center. He has terrible physical scars, but it’s the ones you don’t see that are the hardest for him. He has a lot of memory issues, it’s very difficult for him to remember most things and has taken to writing things down in a journal he carries. At the veteran center he meets Toby, who is creating a therapeutic gardening program there. Toby has very personal reasons for creating this program and it means a lot to him.

There is a great connection between these two right from the start, it’s not the type that hot and sexy, and while there is of course attraction, it’s much deeper. These two just clicked as something very special and I adored how Toby came up with ways to help Harrison remember and engage with him. With the touching, sweet moments also come some very real heartbreaking ones. Harrison struggles with pain, grief, guilt and at times questioning if he’s even good enough for Toby. Toby has his struggles as well, wanting to support Harrison and feeling like enough as well. It’s a very emotional read that tugs on the heartstrings for sure, but it’s so very beautiful! These two were just meant to be, so perfect for each other and I loved their journey!

Penetrating and Captivating

I genuinely enjoyed TGatM. While the story merely skims the surface of combat trauma because it is a romance at its core, the overall effect is penetrating and captivating.

I've loved RJ Scott's Ellery Mountain series ever since I first discovered it 6 years ago, so to find there was going to be new entries, needless to say I was ecstatic. The Gardener and the Marine was first available as weekly installments with the author's newsletter, however I didn't take the opportunity to read it that way. At first, time just got away from me and then I decided that RJ Scott's works are often a can't-put-it-down read for me so I decided to wait until completed.

However you chose to read it, Toby and Harrison's journey is brilliant!

I won't go into many details, not that this is a mystery or anything like that and we all know her stories are HEA but the mens' journey is so heartwarming, there are moments some might call heartbreaking but I would use the term "heart-hurting", I just don't want to spoil even the tiniest moments. Harrison is at the heart of the story with his learning to live life with brain injury and loss, I couldn't help but want to wrap him up in Mama Bear Hugs to protect him but he has Barney for that. I've read stories before with therapy animals but there was just something about the way the author brought Barney's presence to the the table you felt like he was right there next to you, helping you through the story as well.

I grew up a farmer's daughter and when my mother became ill my parents shifted from a grain & feed crops to a vegetable/fruit farm. My mom was to ill to work the farm but she did the business side as we sold fruit and veggies to local stores. I mention this because I could see first hand how farmlife and gardening helped all three of us accept her health situation. So seeing Toby realize how the family business of gardening helps his brother live with autism and turn it into therapy for the Ellery Mountain Veterans Center really spoke to me. The connection the garden creates between Toby and Harrison is beautifully written as well as giving Harrison an opportunity to strengthen his mind and body made this story even stronger.

The Gardener and the Marine, simply put, is a truly wonderful, touching, heartfelt gem from beginning to end.

A last note, if you haven't read Ellery Mountain before, it's not a series you have to read from the beginning as each entry focuses on a different couple. Personally, I can't imagine not reading it in order just because I'm a series-read-in-order kind of gal but it's not necessary, you won't be lost, yes previous characters make appearances but again knowing their story or not doesn't effect the story you choose to read. However you choose to read this series, I highly recommend definitely doing so.

This is a sweet story that incorporates a few sensitive topics, but Scott handles them well. What started as a serial in her newsletter became a wonderful book. The characters are well developed, and the writing flows smoothly as always.

PTSD, autism, and the lives affected are all very important themes in this book. Toby has wanted to use his horticultural knowledge and skills to help with therapy and rehabilitation, and Daniel gives him the chance to prove himself. As he works with the different people at the Ellery Mountain Veterans Center, he not only uses the soil and seeds for therapy, but his huge capacity for compassion as well.

Harrison has been through not only tremendous physical damage, but emotional as well. He often feels like he will never be the man he wants to be, but with the help of others, he's learning coping skills. He keeps his notebook handy, and with Barney ever faithful by his side, he gains a bit more every day.

Toby's little brother, Alec, is autistic, and means the world to him. Painting tiny pigs will forever hold a very special place in my heart. While his actual person doesn't get a lot of page time, his presence is felt often throughout the story.

Watching the characters struggle and grow, crash and come back stronger, and overcome all the doubts and fears was an emotional experience. And, although this is such a happily ever after, it was done in a fairly realistic way considering the characters and their circumstances. I truly enjoyed this story of loss, love, and all that goes with.

Happy reading!

This was such a beautiful story. This book is going to pull on the heartstrings that's for sure. Toby and Harrison just touched my heart. Harrison also broke my heart, but to see him heal and overcome so much it's truly beautiful. The bond that instantly forms between Toby and Harrison is something to see. It will fill your heart with happiness. I couldn't put this book down. I was really intrigued by Toby's use of gardening as a therapy for the veterans at the center. It's amazing the transformation it brings to those veterans. That's another thing that touched my heart; the work being done at the center. This is a book if you're a fan of M/M romance you don't want to miss out on. It's one of the few that truly touches the heart with the characters. From beginning to end this book had me hooked. It had me rooting for Harrison and Toby. They have a once in a lifetime love that we all dream of. This book shows some of the struggles that some veterans have come home to cope with as they navigate their new normal. I would so recommend this one!

I'm not repeating the blurb, so I'll just get to the point.
It's a slow burn, as it should be in this context. I loved how the traumatic head injury was reaserched and approached. Big difference to the somewhat "run of the mill" stories about PTSD. Don't get me wrong - I'm not diminishing any of those stories, they are often heartbreaking - but this book shows another aspects and consequnses of war (or any other similar head trauma). Reading it definitely can expand anyone's views and above all teach us some patience and understanding. This story also shows and honors the importance of the every service/support dog outhere.
What I didn't like, or to maybe put it better found missing is the on page interaction between MC's. There's a lot missed opportunities there, because telling something happened is not showing. Showing makes the reader feel, telling is just that - telling. We do acknowledge the facts and sympathize but we don't feel the scene - the moment is lost... As the consequence even the attraction between the MC's seems nonexistent - although we are told it's there. Love, trust... Yes! Attraction not so much.
Altogether it was good, sweet, at some points heartbreaking and above all educational read.

I loved what the author tried to do here, and I think there was a a fantastic job done of letting the reader get a real glimpse of what tbi and ptsd might be like.

But

I just did not feel aaaaany chemistry or significant connection between the two MCs. And it was just too… idk…. Sugary and insta-love ish for me? While also somehow being slow burn ?!?! Idk… just was not a home run for me.

Toby and Harrison stole my heart! I loved getting to know these two men, and while their story wasn't necessarily the easiest of journeys towards a happily-ever-after, having that front-row seat to their actual journey and seeing how much growth both of them experienced felt like such a privilege. I seriously liked the idea of the creation of a garden being therapeutic. I'd never heard of therapeutic horticulture, and after reading this book, I did a bit of research. I know of quite a few people in my life who totally got into gardening during this pandemic, and my father, brother, and younger sister love to garden, and they've all told me about how beneficial its been to them. All their testimonials alongside Toby and Harrison's story have inspired me to do a bit of digging, literally and figuratively. The Gardener and the Marine proved to be a sweet romance AND gardening inspiration (something that I didn't even know I actually needed!), which is why it gets 4.5 stars. I cannot wait for stories more from RJ Scott's Ellery Mountain series.

Wow! This is an emotional story, which didn’t gloss over the effects of injury and the toll it takes, but rather deals with it with sensitivity. Harry has so much to deal with, with his injuries and survivor guilt and Toby’s garden helped so much to bring him back to the world instead of hiding from it.
I loved Harry and Toby and it was lovely to watch them respond to each other, fall in love and learn to accept and live with Harry’s limitations. Toby is genuinely lovely and cares so much for others and especially Harry and I liked that while there was interest on both sides the path to their HEA was realistic and slow to account for Harry’s needs, so while there were steamy moments they were not instant.
This was a great story and while it’s part of a series it can easily be read as a stand-alone and I highly recommend it.
I was gifted an ARC of this story to review and this is my honest and voluntary opinion.

Written as a realistic depiction of life with brain damage, this book was in equal parts tragic and hopeful. It was tragic reading about Harrison's struggling each day, physically, mentally and emotionally, and hopeful seeing him heal more and more each day. Toby was a huge factor in Harrison's journey to getting better. The way their relationship developed was immensely affecting. A slow, day by day process of Toby caring touch and being present, and Harrison doing everything possible to cling to his memories. They were absolutely stunning together as they steadily grew closer and closer emotionally, despite the objective obstacles in their way.

I honestly read this with a smile on my face and tears in my eyes. It was so heartwarming to see how Toby and Harrison's love might not have had healing powers and they had to work every day for their serenity, but watching these two special men happy with each other filled my heart with joy.

My long-awaited return to the Ellery series was worth it. Originally sent out to newsletter subscribers in serial format, this story was edited and expanded with a few added scenes, before being published as a novel.

Toby, with his unicorn name-shirt and love of all things gardening, won my heart. Alec, with his painting of pigs, stole a corner of it. Barney (the best service dog ever) and Harrison, with his memory lapses and earnestness sealed my love of this book. (Kudos must also be given to Harrison’s mom for her embarrassing play late in the book).

This story has lots of swoon-worthy dialogue, not the least of which is when Harrison said he loved Toby: “It’s the only thing I remember without fail. Like your name and the fact that I couldn’t imagine life without you.”

Scott once again masterfully weaves a beautiful relationship that is a joy to read. The only negative is that the book had to end.

Such a beautiful story

I fell in love with this book. Toby and Harrison were amazing together. Tiny was just so gentle and caring and just what Harrison needed after everything he had con through during his service as a marine. I think it was told really well and had incredible secondary characters that really added to the story. It can be read as a stand alone but I think reading the previous books would help recognising the other characters but is not necessary to enjoy the book.

I always knew that RJ Scott wrote amazing hockey stories with VL Locey, but I have never read any of her other work. One of the best things about book blogging is getting offered amazing reads. I had been watching her newsletter serial of The Gardener and The Marine, but I'm a horrible serial reader - I just want to devour the whole book - so this time I did!
