Forgotten Lands #3

Tide and Tempest

Rate this book
Forged by fire. Bound by blood. Tortured by fate.

Lightning decimates the land, but the people of Ebonpeak learned centuries ago that there is a threat far greater than tempests and firestorms—and when raiders pillage the coastline, maiming and taking all that’s in their path, no one is left unscathed.

Six years ago, Desolation Day stole everything from Samara, leaving her disfigured and gutted with regret, both daily reminders of the world’s brutality. Pushing her to be stronger. To fight harder. And to stay alive. But the sea isn’t the only thing treacherous, and the scars of her youth aren’t nearly as tormenting as what she’s up against in the days to come.

Samara is many things—woodswoman, warrior, survivor—but when her past and future collide, she is forced to face her greatest demon of all.

Venture beyond the desert lands of Sagebrush and through the scorched forest in Tide and Tempest, the next standalone installment in the Forgotten Lands historical fantasy adventures. The perfect read for Amy Harmon (The First Girl Child) and Adrienne Young (Sky in the Deep) fans.

Upon returning from her first successful trip to the scorched forest as a woodswoman, Samara should have returned to a celebration. Instead, she returned to desolation. Raiders had attacked the village and the losses were immense. Her mother was killed along with her unborn sibling. In the aftermath, she lost the rest of her family to revenge. The scars of that day will remain with her forever. Now six years have passed. Samara has grown into a strong woman. But her life is hard and the love she once thought of as hers, is no more. Once again Raider's ships are seen heading towards the village and once again Samara's life will take an unexpected turn.

My goodness. Once again, Lindsey Pogue proves her skill and creativity at worldbuilding. I feel like I stepped back in time into a Saxon village during the dark ages with a rich assortment of characters led by a girl whose light was so bright, she eclipsed every other. Samara stole every page in this book. Her beauty, pain, strength, stubbornness, naivety, and her loss and mistakes all combined to create a complex woman I couldn't help but love. And as much as I loved her, I was equally disappointed in the men around her, save one. The men in the village, especially Gil, were kind but never enough. Raf and her father finally proved themselves but long after they should have, and after causing way too much suffering in her life. I'm sure I was supposed to like Link but from the beginning, I found him unworthy. I am convinced he was in love with Samara but too weak to be the man she needed. He needed a weaker woman to make him feel strong. Only one man challenged her and he turned out to be as broken as Samara. Perfect. I loved the events and the outcome of Ebonpeak and Samara but I would have liked the story to continue on a little longer. I wanted more. Hopefully, in the future, I will get to meet up with Samara, her love, her friends, and her donkey again.

Couldn’t put it down

I loved Samara’s story! It is one of those books that is nicely resolved but you wish you could continue reading more of her story to see what might happen next. I just don’t want it to end! Samara is a strong character with a lot of change and growth and a good love story.

I thoroughly enjoyed this third book in the Forgotten Lands series. We got to know the people living in the dessert, then the people living in the mountains and now the people living by the sea. All are living very tough lives for different reasons. In this book, the village of Ebonpeak is surviving day by day between horrible rain and lightning storms and the impending arrival of the big ships carrying the Raiders. They take whatever they want and kill anyone in their way as they pillage the village.

Samara lost everything when the Raiders killed her mother and then lost her father to his need to avenge her death. She's a woodswoman and lives a very physical and mundane life just trying to provide for her village.

I enjoyed Samara's story and her eventual love story that I didn't see coming. I mean I thought she would have a love interest but it didn't turn out to be who I thought. I really loved them together when it happened though. I look forward to seeing what comes next for her people in their new home.

Lindsey writes great stories and builds worlds that boggle the imagination. Her research into the Forgotten Land series is phenomenal and brings her characters and their world to life. Samara is a wonderful protagonist and I truly enjoyed her journey.

So great! Narrator Samara seems a little more innocent than the main characters of other Forgotten Lands books. Her world is totally different from the scorched desert and damp mountains. It’s a coastal ecosystem, but still one that humans created by ignoring the earth’s warnings that enough is enough. These characters are just as engaging and there are plenty of surprises. And now there’s a new linked series? Yay!

Lindsey has given us another fantastic world and community that is so different from ours. I love the tiny village and it’s inhabitants, especially Samara. She is strong, determined, and imperfectly perfect. I can think of no better escape from my Covid vacation than to be transported to the Forgotten Lands.

I loved Samara. What a fantastic character. Everything she suffered in her youth has changed her, and when her past comes back to haunt her I felt so terrible for her! The world-building was fantastic, the narration spot-on, and the characters were deeply flawed and gritty. I love everything about this book.

I listened to the audiobook, so be kind if I misspell the names:

I am torn between 3 and 4 stars on this one. I liked all the things Samara had to go through in this book, overall I also enjoyed the rest of the characters.

Here is what I was not that keen on:
- not enough rage. So many bad things happened to samara and though she was angry, I longed for that female rage boiling over.
- Samara is not a girls girl. We do not see her have positive relationships with other women beside her mother (and that only briefly), although at the very end she comes around to Violet. I wish that would have been expanded on
- Raf did not get the punishment he deserved. He was the reason many people died in the end and everyone forgave him.

Personally would have also preferred a bit of smut (it is fade to black) but that's not relevant for the rating for me :)
it is a well thought out book that I would recommend you read! Good story, great writing. Just not completely there for me.

What. A. Ride! If you like twists and turns this is the book for you!

Although this book forms part of a series, it can likely be read separately from the other books, as it does not refer strongly to the other stories in this world.

But oh what a world it is! We meet Samara in a small fishing village, and not only do those that live in this wet and dreary place have to deal with electrical storms zapping people off the face of the earth, but pirates and raiders lurk everywhere.

This book was rife with twists and turns and I was left with my jaw dropped open in a few occasions, second guessing all my theories about where the characters or the story was leading - just the way I like it!

Samara will imprint on your mind and you won't ever forget her or her story.

This book played out like an action movie! It is fast paced and intense at times, while still taking time for excellent character development. Even the side characters are given detailed descriptions so that you can “see” everything. This author has a gift for giving high levels of detail without compromising the pace or flow of the story. I love Samara! She is strong and independent, yet can be vulnerable at the right times. She is not afraid to do what is necessary to protect her people. There are some gut wrenching moments, as well as heartwarming moments, and everything in between.

Another amazing read. I absolutely loved this book and the whole series. Each time I read a book by Lindsey I am never disappointed. I am filled with such awe and feelings of watching the best movie. She gives her stories the best characters and I just love her writing. The only thing that I was disappointed in was that there was little tie in with the first two books, and was really hoping that somehow these character's would cross over with the other ones. But needless to say this is an amazing book filled with so many emotions. I was mad, sad, happy.... Highly recommend.

I flew through this book. It was such a a quick read. I really liked it. It's a dystopian story of a girl navigating life and loss in a world where she's always under attack by the elements and people who mean her village harm. She wants to be a fearless warrior like her mother, but she also feels sadness, love, longing, and fear deeply. It's a coming of age story with a good twist and a subtle love story. This book is great for lovers of fantasy and dystopian novels.

Great book

Another great story from Lindsey. I enjoyed every minute of this story. So many ups and downs. A great story with a great cast of characters, you couldn't help but to fall in love with Samara and who she ends up with makes the story even better. If you like a book full of adventures and suspense you'll love this one.

Another good one

This was another exciting story in the series and is more of a standalone than the previous two. I wish that it could have tied in more with the previous books but I enjoyed it anyway.

2.5 stars ⭐️⭐️✨

This is a fine dystopian novel and it is readable but also forgettable and felt like it was ticking off tropes opposed to them occurring organically.

unique plot and interesting world

My first take immediately after reading it is that this book made me sad. Samara lost so much. As a survivor in a hostile world, this book almost felt like it was about migration and how that affects people.

They live in this crazy post-climate change world with unlivable weather, and the village is just scraping by. But change comes by sea in many ways throughout the book.

The plot was really unique, and I didn’t see things coming until they happened. While the title says “romantic,” I felt like this was much more a coming of age novel with a romance subplot in a third of the book.

The author did a good job and the story felt really balanced, and I’m sure it’s one I’ll remember for a while. That melancholy and hopeful feeling.
