Legend has it that a magical spring lies dormant in the heart of the Khuzar desert. Said to be a gift from the gods, the spring holds the cure to all mortal woes.

As mercenaries from everywhere try in vain to find the mystical spring, 17-year-old Desert Rose is on the run after her chieftain father is overthrown and captured by rebel clans. Now out for revenge, she sets out alone to the Oasis Capital to assassinate the person instigating the rebellion: the corrupt Emperor Zhao, who will stop at nothing to possess the elixir of life from the spring.

To infiltrate the Imperial Guard, Desert Rose must pass a series of trials to test her wit, mettle, and her loyalty. But the real test lies in navigating the cut throat court politics with no ally but a rogue prince and a latent magic stirring in her – magic that can bring a kingdom to its knees or destroy her from within.

hi!! so i just finished land of sand and song and WOW OKAY WHEN IS THE SEQUEL PLS.

"I don't believe in destiny. I believe we are the makers of our own lives and are only as free as we allow ourselves to be."

I just finished Land of Sand and Song by Joyce Chua and was quite frankly, blown away. I was drew in by the premise of an all POC character cast, assassins and slow burn and was given all that plus an intricate world, tribal magic, swordfighting and so much tension, both conflict and romance-wise.

With all wonderful novels, my favourite were the characters. Our main character, Desert Rose was no exception, she's strong, family-oriented, feisty, but not without her vulnerabilities which shaped her into such a complex character whose journey I was so invested in!

。・:*:・゚★,。・:*:・゚☆
"Even in the deepest winter and driest desert, hope springs eternal."

If there was one word to describe Land of Sand and Song, it would be adrenaline, because this was truly such an adventure packed into a mere 264 pages! Not only did tropes like assassins, elemental magic, slow burn romances enrich into the plot immensely, I truly appreciated all the political intrigue (definitely a worthy comparison to the wonder that is Descendant of the Crane) as well as the intergenerational conflict.

History and narratives, power, betrayal and to an extent, empire were all explored in Land of Sand and Song which made is such a meaningful read alongside the excitement it gave me. If you;re a fan of Chinese wuxia dramas or are just looking for an engaging East Asian fantasy, I'd sincerely recommend giving LAND OF SAND AND SONG a go!

Many thanks to the author for an e-ARC. <3

LAND OF SAND AND SONG was born out of the guilty pleasure I take in watching Korean saeguk (historical dramas) and Chinese wuxia dramas, as well as my desire to see more Asian-inspired fantasy on the shelves.

This is a book about a girl who ventures beyond the world she has always known with a singular goal in mind, and I found myself living vicariously through her as I explored this world of my own making. It took my imagination to places I never thought I could roam, and had me researching the treacherous wilderness of the Taklamakan desert and figures like Emperor Qin Shi Huang (who was obsessed with acquiring immortality), and physically discovering the nooks and crannies of the Forbidden City.

So writing this book was a trip, to say the least. There's so much more to delve into, and I can't wait to have you, dear reader, embark on this journey with me. I hope you will enjoy your stay here!

Firstly, I'd like to start off by thanking Joyce Chua and Penguin random house for sending me a copy of this book.

I really enjoyed it 👌🏽🤗
It's honestly a book that made me forget I was reading.

The writing was sooo beautiful and I think one of the elements I enjoyed most about it. The multiple povs in this book were written so well where I was never bored of a character or wanting to skip a pov. It flowed very well.

The plot in my opinion was super intriguing, but I felt like there was so much happening and so much to focus on at one time. This book was pretty short so the climax of the book was a little rushed but that's not necessarily a negative. It's simply just really fast paced and has left an opening for the sequel.
The world building initially was a little confusing but I find that's the case with a lot of high fantasies 😅 and with time, as you carry on reading the world makes more sense.

In terms of characters, I really liked them. Especially Wei and Desert Rose. Wei is just so cute and pure 👌🏽
With the multiple povs in this book I felt like I could really connect to the characters and see what their thoughts and feelings towards the other characters were. Especially with the potential love triangle going on between Wei, Desert Rose and Meng. I can't wait for the sequel and to see the Romance blossom 🙌🏽

Overall, I really enjoyed this book, the plot and characters have definitely hooked me to get excited about the sequel 🥳
So for all the above haha I'd rate this one:
🌟🌟🌟🌟/5

If you're looking for a fantasy, romance similar to flame in the mist or a red queen betrayal vibe I'd recommend giving this one a try 🥰

Thank you to the author for reaching out and asking me to review her book!

I hadn’t heard of this one until the author reached out to me on Instagram but I am glad that it was brought to my attention. It was a fun and thrilling read that had me wanting to keep picking it up every chance I had!

The book is split into three point-of-views: Desert Rose, Wei, and Meng. Each new chapter has the character’s name at the top for who the chapter belongs to which makes it easy to understand the switch. I can’t say that I have a favorite as I liked each one for different reasons. It’s easy to see certain parallels between Desert Rose and Wei. They both have dealt with betrayal in some way. They are also trying to save the ones they love. Family is important to both but it is also important to Meng too. Because of this, lines are drawn and sometimes the decisions they make cause more harm than good.

There are minor characters that I liked as well that added to the plot and would also reappear for shock value which kept me intrigued. I feel like a few will have bigger roles in the next book and I can’t wait to see where their plot points go!

The pacing for the book is really good and I felt like there were no lull moments. The action starts right away so it is easy to fall into the book and continuously read to find out what happens next.

There is a lot going on with the plot but it mostly circles around politics. Politics play a big role and there is a sense of distain for refugees when it comes to who is allowed in the capitol city. It mirrors a lot of what goes on in our own world. People are afraid of what they don’t understand or know and in this case it involves magic and those who wield it and yet the emperor strives to find a magical pool. The plot also brings up found family, especially for Wei, and how sometimes blood means nothing for certain people.

The book is filled with plot twists that I didn’t see coming and had me shocked! I did question a certain character a lot and their last chapter ended on a very interesting and surprising cliffhanger. By the end I’m still not sure about them as I feel like they are more or less doing it for the right reasons but making the wrong decisions to get there. You could say that there are a few hints of maybe a relationship in the works and maybe there will be more to it in the next book.

Overall, I enjoyed this one and I can’t wait to see where this series goes!

"I don't believe in destiny. I believe we are the makers of our own lives and are only as free as we allow ourselves to be"

Truly one of my favorite reads from this year!!! This book tells a story about a girl named Desert Rose who is determined on saving her captured father and getting her revenge. Along the way, she met Wei, the rogue prince, and Meng, the Fourth Prince. However to get her revenge Desert Rose must pass through a series of trials while also controlling the powerful magic within her.

I love everything about this book. From the characters to the semi-political plot that resembles the real world, everything is perfect. This story is told through 3 different perspectives, all of which are very interesting and none of it are boring. To be honest, Halfway through the book, I was quite confused about the "political" aspect of the plot but it was revealed slowly towards the end as we figure it out alongside Desert Rose. The characters are lovely and we root for these characters, even though their goals might contradict one another. Desert Rose is such a loyal and badass main character (I LOVE HER!) Wei gives off Prince Zuko from ATLA vibe (which I am not complaining about) and Meng being a caring prince is such a King (or emperor) Material. I really hope more people will read this so we can fangirl together over these hot princes and all the hot assassins' from the House of Night. There are so many lessons you can take from this book, from creating your own destiny, the importance of knowing the full history and not just bending it to fit your own narrative and to knowing how easy it is for a ruler to manipulate their people

If you love romance in your fantasy this one is definitely for you. The romantic scenes feel intimate without it being too much. one of my annotations was "is the book supposed to have several sexual tension scenes or am I just too deprived of a human touch?" HAHAHHA it's because the scenes were intimate but well, it's not too intimate. Their relationship isn't the main focal point of the plot so if you're not a fan of romance, you will enjoy this one too! This book is only 230 pages yet it doesn't feel rushed at all which is phenomenal since this is a fantasy romance novel.

Thank you Joyce Chua for sending me an eARC in exchange for an honest review. I will definitely be buying the physical copy because just look at it!! how can I not own this??!!! <3

Joyce spins an enchanting tale of magic, vengeance and romance in this new Asian fantasy world. Land of Sand and Song is brilliantly written with compelling characters, and you’ll find it hard to put down this book once you pick it up.

I'm also particularly obsessed with how great Chapter 19 was written - it's my favourite scene in the entire book. ;)

"I don't believe in destiny. I believe we are the makers of our own lives and are only as free as we allow ourselves to be"

I loved this quote so much so I have to include this in my review.

This was so exciting. I believe you couldn’t put it down once you started reading it. The starting was so exciting and I immediately can’t wait to read the rest of the story. Desert Rose wants to avenge her father after he is overthrown and captured by the rebel clans. This resulted to why Desert Rose traveled to Oasis Capital to save her father and helped the assassination of the Emperor.

The plot was amazing and structured. I loved the reminiscent of the ancient China that was viewed in this book. I also found the details of the historical setting in this book was very interesting. Some might say that there’s a lot of info dump and it’s too descriptive. To me, no. The author provided us just as much as required in order to unfold the story, to tell us what’s going on.

There’s a plenty of actions and adventures and some sort of magic abilities that you don’t want to miss. I enjoyed most of the elements in this book especially the political issues. I was surprised with myself for liking this element because I usually avoided it. Guilty.

The characters are well written I’m so glad I got to see another asian female badass character. I hope there will be more characters like this in book 2. So I heard there’s a sequel coming soon. Can’t wait!

Overall, this was a great historical fiction and of the fantasy books I really enjoyed this year. I highly recommend it.

Thank you Times Reads for sending me a copy of Land of Sand and Song in exchange for an honest review. This book is available at all good bookstores.

Land of Sand and Song by Joyce Chua is a story about seeking the truth amidst the fantastic world building set in a Khuzar desert. This book follows Desert Rose, Wei and Meng as they traverse through the whirlwind Oasis Kingdom along trials, missions and mischief. This book is such a page turner that made it truly impossible for me to put down and I'm honestly disappointed that the book is so thin because I really need the sequel now!

The writing is absolutely breathtaking, it is truly so well written which is one of the main reasons that made it unputdownable. I wanted to know more about the characters' journey. At times, I'm not sure what to focus on because everything is happening all at once but I like that its very fast paced.

I honestly wasn't sure who the main love interest is and its so obvious that there's a love triangle happening. Though I really didn't expect that the person who seems to be innocent would turn out to be someone with full of motives under the sleeve. This caught me off guard and I am so looking forward to seeing how the author will further expand the character as well as the rest of the story.

I need more. I really do. This isn't enough! But now I'll have no choice but to suck it up and wait for the sequel which I have no idea when that'll ever be. I would totally recommend you to read this book as it is just an amazing read.

(Disclaimer: I received this book from the publisher. This has not impacted my review which is unbiased and honest.)

Not going to lie, I didn't realize till the end that this was a series. Yes the last sentence of the synopsis says it, but I try not to read a synopsis so that I let myself be surprised. Land of Sand and Song is an action packed fantasy. And while the action sweeps you away from the beginning, there are some slower parts which allow you to catch your breath. In terms of pacing, there were some moments which felt a too rushed, versus a few which felt a bit slow, but overall it evens out! Ultimately a story about revenge and truth.

With multiple POV, these characters are absorbed in their own lives, ambitions, and secrets. What kept me reading were the characters. I instantly rooted for Desert Rose. Who wouldn't love a girl who can use a knife and who wants to find her father? Even more than that, Desert Rose is adaptable, clever, and passionate. In these characters, Chua examines what we will sacrifice for family and legacy.

First, a big thank you to the author Joyce for sending me a copy of this wonderful book in exchange for an honest review!

This book has it all: assassins, court politics, fierce girls set on revenge, the found-family trope and mythology. What could you possibliy want more?

I thought Desert Rose's story was so unique. Reading about her path to revenge was not only captivating, but also included some magical twists. She is a fierce, strong character with a great character arc! I really enjoyed getting to know more about Asian mythology too, and loved how it was intergrated in the story.

The plot was fast-paced and action-packed, full of court intrigue and politics. The world building had a unique touch and let's you get lost in the magical world of the desert. I loved the three different POV's - Wei, Meng and Rose; each scheming on their own and yet always crossing paths. (Also, I can see a possible romance coming our way in the sequels :))

This book reminded me once again how precious the found-family trope is - and just how far characters would go to protect their loved ones. The ending has me so excited for the next book of this trilogy - I can't wait to see how Desert Rose's story continues!

"I don't believe in destiny. I believe we are the makers of our own lives and are only as free as we allow ourselves to be."

"There are those who seek glory over peace. Never leave your back facing them."

Books inspired by Asian legends and myths will always be my cup of tea. This one is no exception. The story follows Desert Rose, the daughter of a tribe chieftain and her journey in finding her father who is usurped by the other members of their tribe. She was forced to escape on her own and came upon a group looking for a magical spring led by Wei, a rogue prince. She then got entangled in a political warfare upon arriving at the capital especially after a chance encounter with the fourth prince, Meng. The story follows three different characters which is quite interesting and I highly enjoy reading books with different POVs. It’s always fun to know about the other characters’ thoughts and feelings. There are also a bunch of side characters that I adored and I’m really excited to know more about them. The plot twists were kind of predictable but I still enjoyed it nonetheless. I love that there are a lot of things going on and how they’re connected with each other. The romance was really subtle as the book focuses mainly on the political aspect and I believe that this is gonna be a love triangle so I’m very curious how their relationships develop. Overall, it was an enthralling and magical read and I’m absolutely looking forward to the sequel. A huge thanks to the author for reaching out to me and offered a copy of this book, it was such a magical adventure.

This book was an excellent surprise!
I'll admit that what first drew me to it was the title, Land of Sand and Song, which sounds magical and mysterious. But what made me love this book the most was the writing. Joyce introduces us to compelling characters and a world filled with political intrigue, assassins and, magic. If this isn't a recipe for a good fantasy book, I don't know what is!

It's a small book with only 264 pages, which made it for a quick read! Nevertheless, every single detail, every single plot twist, was cleverly thought out.
From the very first page is action/adventure packed and fast-paced, which sometimes might have felt a little rushed, but instead, it just kept me at the edge of my seat. The political conflict, while black and white, was one of my favorite aspects of the story! I needed to know more and see how things would turn out.
There is a foreshadowing of a love triangle, which I'm not always a fan of, but I already have my favorite and, I'm prepared to defend Wei until the end of the world.
Of course, I have to mention our heroine, Desert Rose. She is fierce, loyal and, strong, but what surprised me the most is as she faces new challenges, she takes her vulnerability and turns it into strengths. At least, that's how I saw her.

Needless to say that I can't wait for a sequel. I need it, as much as I need my friends to read this book so that we can discuss it and share the anxiety creeping in while I wait for book two.

Thank you so much, Joyce Chua, for providing me with an eArc copy! As a testament to my love for this book, it's now on my Christmas wishlist because I need a physical copy!

An exciting story with plenty of action and adventure, Land of Sand and Song is nothing short of a fantasy gem. If you haven't read any fantasy before, you will be pleasantly surprised by the well crafted world Land of Sand and Song builds as well as the captivating storyline and how easily you'll become hooked.

You are going to witness the clash of two worlds on the brink of war!

While reading this book, I was quickly drawn into the story which begins with a shock-filled scene of a young girl, Desert Rose , waking up to find her house has been surrounded by the rebel clans with the intention to overthrow her father and take over the power to lead their desert tribe. This has led to a quest in which Desert Rose must travel to Oasis Capital to save her father and help to assassinate the Emperor who has been scheming to destroy her people.

The author does a great job of capturing the culture of the desert tribe as well as the people of the capital. She gives enough detail so that the reader understands the magic and customs of the desert as well as the way of life and politics of the capital. Interwoven between three POVs, it allows the readers to become familiar with the personalities and motivations of each character.

The writing style is simple to read. It is fast paced and despite the many fantasy elements which involve magic and action scenes, the narrative is very accessible and easy to visualize. As a fantasy book, the author does a good job of making the setting seem very rich and it does remind me of c-drama series that I used to watch as a child.

Highly recommended, and if you're looking for something light and simple yet intriguing, look no further. The writing is exceptional, the characters are well developed, and the narrative is unique. I would recommend this to everyone who enjoys fantasy, magic and action! Very beautifully written! A great beginning to an amazing story! I really enjoyed it!

Land of Sand and Song by @joycechuawrites

Today’s *spoiler free* review is brought to you by YZ🍀

📌 𝑶𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒂𝒍𝒍 𝑽𝒆𝒓𝒅𝒊𝒄𝒕: A WordWanderlust’s ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Read

📁 𝑮𝒆𝒏𝒓𝒆: Fantasy, Asian Inspired, Singapore Literature

📚 𝑻𝒉𝒐𝒖𝒈𝒉𝒕𝒔: After the train wreck that was my last read (Descendant of the Crane), Joyce’s novel almost brought me to tears with the intense relief it provided. If I may be so bold, I think Land of Sand and Song is a simpler but yet equally enjoyable cousin of Rebecca Kuang’s The Poppy War. I can’t really put a finger on it but Land of Sand and Song provides me with a sense of familiarity and comfort - the kind of feeling you get when you read a well thought out and well-written piece of fantasy literature.

The premise of the novel is laid out incredibly well, the succinct yet vivid descriptions provided forward moving momentum that kept me at the edge of my seat (or well… bed, because I stayed up to finish this). The characters are relatable - their thought processes, needs, and actions all make perfect sense - and their character developments subtle and not extreme make sense as the first book of (what I hope will be) a series. The world building is commendable, efforts were made to describe the mechanics behind how magic worked in this world through the various fight scenes and adventures. A small quip, but I wish there are more descriptions of how the world looks like, where each location is in relation to each other - maybe a map of the world would be nice! I also enjoyed the Asian influences (if I am not wrong, East Asian and Central Asian). Ooh and also the tropes in this!! I sense tropes like step-sibling rivalry, evil stepmother, enemies to lovers, slow burn romance, lovers to enemies - all of which I’m excited for the next book to further explore!

I really think this book has the potential to be so much more! It has all the elements it needs to be adapted into a movie/show/animated series. While reading, I was also craving for illustrations and drawings of the characters and the landscapes - somebody please make some merch for this please!

Overall, this is a quick but FANTASTIC fantasy read. I would recommend all fantasy lovers to give this a shot - I think it is great for those trying to get out of a slump or for one looking to relax on a day off.

I cannot wait for the sequel!

That's what I thought as soon as I was done reading the last page. Land of Sand and Song is an amazing YA novel. It has two-hundred-something pages so it can be counted as a quick read but it is stuffed with amazing content and might just be the best book I've read this year (till now, at least).

The worldbuilding is beautiful and I'd love to learn more about that world in the sequel. This book has a vibe similar to that of Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi so if you liked that book, then chances are that you'd enjoy Land of Sand and Song too.

It is fast-paced, has multiple POVs and is very, very difficult to put down from the very first page. I loved reading about the characters and their perspectives and I can't wait to read more of it in the next book.

Overall, the whole combination of myths, action, a very intriguing plot, elaborate worldbuilding and realistic but fantastical characters in Joyce Chua's engaging writing style makes the book a treat to read.

*3.75. I found out about this book through the good ol bookstagram and once I saw the aesthetics I was hooked. It definitely gave off historical Chinese drama vibes and it really worked. I liked all the characters and, for once, all three POV’s were interesting to read from. Desert Rose, Wei, and Meng all had some dimensional to their personalities and motivations, and although I saw where the plot was going, I still enjoyed it.

I will say that this felt like the beginning of something, and I wished we got a little more from it. I wanted to see more the world of the characters and their interactions. But that being said, I’m looking forward how this author grows (this being their debut novel) and to the sequel!

Land of Sand and Song is a fantastic ride that immediately immerses you into its enchanted world from the very beginning. Joyce has a way of engaging readers with the power of her words, and the whole experience of reading her book felt like everything was covered in a veil of magic - and I didn't want to leave.

Desert Rose not only goes through her personal journey of vengeance with such complex emotions (and a kickass power!), but she also has to deal with the varying agendas of the people around her. All these add shades of grey to the plot, and will make you want to go from one chapter to the next without stopping.

Suffice it to say that the second book is on my list of highly anticipated books, and I can't wait to see where Desert Rose, Wei, and Meng will go next!

Review:

I have so many things to say about Land of Sand and Song by Joyce Chua. First off if you know me, you know I am a HUGE fan of Asain inspired fantasy. Land of Sand and Song did not disappoint. Who doesn’t love a strong female lead, some mystery, court intrigue, and some attractive potential love interests?! Oh and to top it all off she has this power within her that even she didn’t know about?? Sign me up! I cannot wait to read the rest of the series. What a great first book!

This book is super original and I don’t feel like I have read anything like it before. The story is so beautifully written.

Thank you Joyce for allowing me to read and review your book. I adored it. I recommend this book for anyone who enjoyed Six Crimson Cranes, Daughter of the Moon Goddess, or The Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea.

Land of Sand and Song opens with a staggering scene and maintains its’ fast paced and high stakes adventure storytelling throughout the entire book.

The book is told in the perspective of three characters: Desert Rose—who is on the run from the rebel clans who overthrew her father, the chieftain. Wei, the rogue prince of Oasis Kingdom and his brother, the favored Prince Meng. Their fates collide early on in the story, as Desert Rose infiltrates the capital and all three of them are forced to navigate the vicious royal court of the kingdom.

Desert Rose is resourceful, brave and very easy to like. I also love the relationships she has built with both princes so far, especially with Meng, their late night meetings provided a deeper insight into both characters and the world they live in. Speaking about the princes, Meng and Wei could not be more different, but they are also more similar than they realize, both of them doing what they think is best for the kingdom, I’m interested to see what happens when they clash again in the future!

The storytelling really shines, but so does the world building, I particularly loved the lore and legends surrounding the mystical spring. There were also hints of magic throughout the book, especially during the trials that made it fun. But the one that blew my away was the plot twist, I suspected something would happen but it still took me by surprised! Can’t wait to see how that’ll play out in the next book😱

Overall Land of Sand and Song is a fun and quick, adventurous read that is perfect for you if you love We Hunt the Flame and Spin the Dawn!

Thank you to the author and publisher for sending me an ebook of Land of Sand and Song to read, I thoroughly enjoyed it🧡

I received an e-ARC of Land of Sand and Song by Joyce Chua from the author in exchange for an honest review.

From the start of Land of Sand and Song, I was pulled in by the adventure, excitement, and betrayals that were happening. Joyce Chua is determined to throw you right into the story from the start and it works - right away, you know that you are about to embark on quite a journey with the heroine, Desert Rose. The world building is integrated quite nicely and smoothly into all of this so that while readers are into the action right away, they also feel like they are getting enough sense of the world to understand what is happening. Sometimes in other fantasy novels, this doesn’t happen and I’m still trying to wrap my head around the world much less the plot. In Land of Sand and Song, there were definite areas in the plot where I wondered, “Why on earth would he do that?” But the story reveals itself chapter by chapter as characters reveal their stories and their motivations.

Land of Sand and Song has a lot of court intrigue as we get more than just Desert Rose’s perspective. We also alternate between Wei and Meng’s perspectives - both of whom are princes in this kingdom and both connected to Desert Rose. Readers are sure to be drawn into this world that Joyce Chua has built and root for the feisty, loyal, and mysterious Desert Rose.

"I don't believe in destiny. I believe we are the makers of our own lives and are only as free as we allow ourselves to be"

Ahhhhh... I don't even know how to start with this review so that I convince you to go read it. For one, let me say, I rarely rate books 5 stars, but this book? It made the CUT.

If you love fantasy filled adventure books, with warrior girls as the leads and with a dash of romance, not to mention magic...this book is a must grab. Also if you've been looking for a book with East Asian major representation this is a book you should get.
I was blessed to have got this book when I won a giveaway by Joyce Chua. (FIRST GIVEAWAY AND FIRST WIN may I add😭) and I was more than excited to start it because the blurb was captivating.
Personally I fell in love with the characters especially Rose. Right from the start the only thing on my mind is wondering if she's going to be successful or not. And don't get me started on the teeny love triangle which I couldn't get over and I must say I'm still in love with both boys 😭 The book is in a triple POV of Desert Rose, Wei and Meng and this in more than enough ways keeps giving you different perspectives on the events that take place throughout the book.

Joyce tends to write in this precise descriptive way which personally I found lovely. It's rare to read a book and find a villain and gladly hate the villain with all your heart, but this book indeed made me hate the villains. One particular one was Wangyi😑

Honestly if I continue to say much on this book, I might spoil it for you before you start it. If you loved any of the Grishaverse books, Folk of Air series, you're definitely going to love this one.

And there's a book 2 coming ....I'm stoiced.
