Smells Like Bacon: The Skit Guys Guide to Lifelong Friendships

Rate this book
The guys who together form the popular comedy duo The Skit Guys, take their distinct brand of humor and apply it to a guide on how to make and keep friends and why it matters for a life of faith and laughs. Tommy Woodard and Eddie James, the men who form the widely popular comedy duo The Skit Guys, have been best friends since high school. With encouragement and guidance from their youth pastor, the guys started to write and perform skits for their youth group. Since their high-school days, they've been writing and performing hilarious and poignant skits live around the world and on camera, as well as on their site, SkitGuys.com. Everywhere they go, the question people always ask them is, “How did you guys get to be and figure out how to stay friends?” Now, this offbeat duo is coming together to present Smells Like The Skit Guys Guide to Lifelong Friendships , a book about the power of friendships and how to build the kind of friendships that last. Written in the signature hilarity of a Skit Guys dialogue—with well-placed banter or two sprinkled in for good measure— Smells Like Bacon Tommy and Eddie have traveled the world performing for families at events, churches, and conferences. Their SkitGuys.com website has grown into a treasured media resource for families, pastors and churches. Their numerous short films, skits, and scripts are used to reach families all over the world. When The Skit Guys aren't performing or shooting new short films, both Tommy and Eddie serve in their local churches, enjoy good food (especially pizza and fries!), and love life with their families.

Tommy Woodard

12 books14 followers
Tommy Woodard’s illustrious career began around 1975 on the front porch of his home where his older (and bossier) sister Debbie would direct him in homemade plays. They would invite their parents, neighbors, and strangers walking by to sit on the lawn and enjoy their masterful works of art. He went on to perform in high school plays, where his favorite thing was pretending to be different characters with his best buddy Eddie. (Who knew 30 years later they would be doing that and reaching millions through stage and screen?) In addition to being one half of The Skit Guys, Tommy starred in The Skit Guys’ first feature film, FAMILY CAMP, a faith-based family comedy, which released in theaters across the U.S. on May 13, 2022 and ranked as the No. 1 new family movie during its opening weekend. Tommy has co-authored over a dozen publications with Eddie James, including their latest book about friendship, “Smells Like Bacon.” He also serves as a pastor at Newchurch in Oklahoma City. Tommy lives in Edmond, Oklahoma with his wife and kids.

I had never heard of this comedy duo called The Skit Guys, but they are pretty funny. In their book, they use their own style of humor as a guide for making and keeping friends. To further the concept, they apply it to matters of faith. Tommy Woodard and Eddie James have been best friends since high school. It seems they were encouraged by their youth pastor, to use their unique friendship to write and perform skits for their youth group.
Now, ever since high-school, they've been writing and performing funny and meaningful skits live around the world and on camera. What a great story!

Here we have a book about the power of friendships and how to build friendships that last.
Within the text is conversation banter as if they were performing live.

Here are some of the topics they have for us…

Who needs friends?
Let's-Dig-in-the-Dirt Friends
Awkward things not to say to potential friends
Crying at the movie Beaches
How to BE a good friend;
What to look for in friends--and what to avoid;
How to handle difficult situations in friendship
Why God makes a great friend

I think readers will enjoy the fun quizzes, random stories, and references to bacon in this fun and inspiring book.

Okay, Tommy and Eddie are so funny! They've made this such an easy book to read, yet packed with good, Biblical insight into how to find a good friend and be a good friend. I plan to give away a couple copies as gifts.

I had never heard of "The Skit Guys" before, but I won this book as part of a Goodreads Giveaway.

If you're of the more born-again Christian persuasion, or you just like these guys' humor, then you are the target market for this book. If you aren't in either camp, there's not much there to hand onto.

There's mostly just the typical saccharine/superficial stuff about friendships. Most of the examples they give are either impersonal/hypothetical situations or low-stakes drama ("remember that time we ate 2 large pizzas each?!").

Every time they veer into a place where there might be some emotional "meat," they back away from details (e.g., alcoholism and death of a parent and of a mentor get less space than when their act bombed at a rodeo and another time they were badly handled by a booker (?)).

Also, they often do not practice what they preach. I mean, taking friendship advice from guys for whom it took 8 *years* to discover they were better off in separate hotel rooms while traveling says a lot about the quality of their honesty, openness, and "tunnel of chaos" right there.

In the book Smells Like Bacon, comedians, authors and friends Eddie James and Tommy Woodard, write about their friendship and the lessons they have learned through the years. Through their quirky, humorous and conversational style, The Skit Guys give insights and patterns for building life-long, deep friendships. Through the ups and downs of life and the pressures of ministry, they have weathered the storms and even learned to hug! (Well, one of them did)
I have been a fan of The Skit Guys for years and I learned a lot about their relationship in this book which only deepened my respect for them and their ministry. I would highly recommend this book. I received a copy of this e-book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I love these guys and their skits on Facebook. Have found myself watching some over and over.
I was delighted to be able to read their book on friendship. In this digital age, the art of friendship is sadly falling by the wayside with people not actually knowing HOW to be a good friend - the isolation of the pandemic has not aided our social skills much either.
Eddie & Tommy take lessons from their friendship and use it to illustrate various points and highlight the Do's and the Don't's of friendships.
A great Christmas present idea for yourself; a loved one or a teenager struggling to find their way in the minefield of friendship.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for allowing me the chance to read this book.

I once heard that there is a difference between friendly people and friends. We all need someone we can count on, and we should be someone others can count on. As odd as the title may sound, this book shares about both sides of friendship.

Using humor and the Bible, Eddie James and Tommy Woodard tell about looking for real friends and being one yourself. They draw from their long time friendship and give you things to do when you are looking for a friend and ways to build friendships.

This is a great book for those that want to work on relationships in a godly way.

I received a free copy from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

In traditional Skit Guys fashion, this book takes on the back and forth fun loving nature of the relationship of Tommy and Eddie. This was a quick, fun, easy read on how to maintain and find lifelong friendships. It’s a simple concept with life changing implications. What a fun and thoughtful read!
I think most people whether they admit or not, struggle with building good friendships. The online world says "stay at a certain distance" where the Bible says we are to give our lives for each other. In the book, Tommy and Eddie provide an entertaining bridge to help people laugh and learn about how to build a healthy friendship. I highly recommend the audiobook as well so you get the full entertainment and tone from Tommy and Eddie's banter.
