It was love at first sight… with my professor. What’s a dragon to do?
For two years, I’ve been pining over Professor Sarris. I knew the moment I saw him that we were meant for each other, but it’s not to be. For one thing, I was his student, and he’s the most ethical man I know. For another, he has no idea I’m actually a four-thousand-year-old dragon from another dimension.
When my people fled to Earth to avoid extinction, I vowed to clean up my life and stop acting like a fledgling. It’s bad enough that nobody takes me seriously… sure, maybe I used to be flighty and irresponsible and caused a few interspecies incidents, but that’s all in the past. I have big plans for the future, and this college gig is the first step in proving myself. I’m not endangering this fresh start for anyone.
But then my professor and I wind up at the same party, and suddenly it seems he’s not completely out of reach. Except I’m still the adorable flirt nobody wants to rely on, and convincing him we should be together while proving I’m a changed dragon is a monumental task.
LOUISA MASTERS started reading romance much earlier than her mother thought she should. While other teenagers were sneaking out of the house, Louisa was sneaking romance novels in and working out how to read them without being discovered. She’s spent most of her life feeling sorry for people who don’t read, convinced that books are the solution to every problem. As an adult, she feeds her addiction in every spare second, only occasionally tearing herself away to do things like answer the phone and pay bills. She spent years trying to build a “sensible” career, working in bookstores, recruitment, resource management, administration, and as a travel agent, before finally conceding defeat and devoting herself to the world of romance novels. Louisa has a long list of places first discovered in books that she wants to visit, and every so often she overcomes her loathing of jet lag and takes a trip that charges her imagination. She lives in Melbourne, Australia, where she whines about the weather for most of the year while secretly admitting she’ll probably never move.
I really liked the set-up here, with millennia-old dragon shifter Dustin (who looks all of 20) pining away for his English lit professor, Rob Sarris, who was a quiet, unassuming, early-forties-ish human, who thought he was being inappropriate crushing back on student Dustin.
The pining was the ticket here, really enjoying those initial chapters where Dustin longingly watched Rob from afar, the usually cocky, rambling dragon suddenly blushing up a storm or losing his ability to coherently speak whenever Rob was near. It was cute and sweet and I couldn’t wait to see how they would ultimately come together.
Interestingly, the story took a different turn than one I was then expecting, with Dustin and Rob acknowledging their attraction and interest pretty dang early in the piece. .
I both did and didn’t like the middle of the story, for a couple of reasons. I liked that there was zero miscommunication and the whole supernatural community secret wasn’t an issue like I expected it to be. But mostly, I was sad in the second part because I missed the shy, bumbling Dustin of early in the story, who suddenly regained his composure once he realised he truly had a shot with his nerdy-sexy professor. Fun, mouthy, horny Dustin was still a barrel of laughs, don't get me wrong, but I was super-sweet on dorky, incoherent Dustin too, so I had trouble reconciling the two halves of the whole.
As per usual, the biggest strengths of this series are in the large ensemble cast of loveable characters and in the specific brand of humour Masters delivers, that always guarantees many good laughs are had throughout.
Honestly, this series is just all-too-easy to read and I look forward to the shenanigans and romances yet to come.
While I *liked* this story well enough, it wasn't completely love, and felt a bit more like a filler read to me.
I suspect that since this book was from a spinoff of Masters' "Hidden Species" series, where the action was non-stop and there were bad guys around every corner, this one left me wanting more of that same faster-paced, thrill-a-minute adventure.
Yes, this story contained dragons, but there was very little actual *DRAGON'ing* (it's a word, shush) happening on-page. ☹
I never found myself bored, just never overly thrilled, since the plot drivers were mainly just normal, day-to-day, new relationship kind of stuff, instead of the exciting things that normally keep me fully engaged in paranormal fantasy stories.
I think that if I can get my brain to reset into "it's mostly just a typical romance" mode, I'll probably be able to more fully immerse myself in future books in this series.
3.5 stars.

My goodness, these books are just too cute. You know, two weeks ago I bought some books that I had actually planned to read this month, but I just can't get enough of this series. To cut a long story short, I started this book this morning and now I've already finished it, so I guess I'll have to start the next one today, because there's really no better bedtime reading than these silly, funny, sugar-sweet dragons. I knew Dustin would make me giggle, but it was also quite apparent how mature he is despite his playfulness. But nothing beats the way he adores his professor, so cuuuuuute.
I bite my lip, and she makes a noise of annoyance. “How do you manage to do that and pout at the same time? It shouldn’t be possible! You’re like… super twink.” Super twink! Yessssss. “Do I get a costume? Something with glitter,” I muse, thinking about it. 🤭🤭🤭
“Please? Can’t we just get to know each other better?” His thumb brushes back and forth over the back of my hand. “I just want to spend some time with you.” I’m mesmerized by him. “Okay,” I find myself agreeing, and his whole face lights up with such joy, I can’t even regret it. 🫠🐉🫠
“What have they been saying? It’s probably not true. I’m a delight!” He pouts, hands planted on his hips, and my heart melts even as my cock twitches. How can anybody possibly be this adorably sexy? “You are,” I soothe. “You’re utterly delightful.” The pout turns to a smile, and he sidles over and wraps his arm around mine. “Aw, aren’t you sweet?” he coos. 🫠🐉🫠
I really enjoyed the first book in this series and had high hopes for this one. Unfortunately I ended up disappointed. I liked Dustin, the dragon, and his antics. But couldn't connect to Rob, the professor. We are told they are perfect for each other but I didn't feel it. Plus, there was no real plot and I didn't get why Dustin had to constantly prove himself. The dragons is the only reason I finished the book and give it 3 stars. They are adorable, funny and sweet. Plus, Steffan is absolutely hilarious. Every scene with him - 5 glorious stars.
This one was funny as hell. There were moments where I had to stop because I was truly giggling out loud and couldn't focus. It was also really sweet. So far I've really liked Louisa's series. Can't wait for Fabian's book!
Reread edit: just as good the second time as it was the first. Listening on audio is a whole other experience. And Joel Leslie's narration is really good!
Tropes: student/professor, age gap dynamic (but the student is a 4000 year old dragon), paranormal Feels: 3/5 Steam*: 2/5 Kinks: n/a Angst: low HEA: yes Pairing: MM Triggers/potential icks/content warnings: instalove on one side, pining, almost no plot, slow burn
3.5 stars. This is one where I really wish we had a half star capability in goodreads. It doesn't deserve a four but I also feel like it doesn't deserve a three.
Rob is a 45-year-old human professor at college. He's going gray, he's soft in the middle. But the moment Dustin meets him, Dustin instantly falls in love with him / recognizes him as something special. Dustin is a 4,000-year-old dragon shifter. He looks like a 20-year-old because of aging in his species. He's going to college just so that he can learn about humans and integrate a bit better into society. They initially met two years ago when Dustin first had a class with Rob and Dustin has had a massive extremely visible crush, stuttering every time he's around Rob, staring at him with hearts in his eyes, basically a cartoon version of a crush. Dustin went from being a sex positive man w**** to completely celibate, because he can't stomach the idea of being with someone but Rob. There's no relationship between them at all, they have no personal discussions during that 2-year.
Then Rob and Dustin meet at a paranormal social gathering, and Dustin finds out that Rob is already aware of the paranormal creatures, because his stepfather is one. With Rob knowing the big secret, and that Dustin is actually 4000 years old, the only thing holding Rob back from entering into a relationship with Dustin is the fact that he is still technically a student and the college forbids relationships between students and professors. They give themselves two weeks to get to know each other and decide if they want to try to pursue a relationship or not. And if they decide to pursue one, Dustin says he'll just drop out and get rid of that issue.
There were some things that I liked about this book. I liked the humor in it. The characters were funny characters. I liked that it was low angst. It was a fun romp, a rom-com that was a little light on the romance. I liked that there was body positivity, though it was kind of undone a bit by all of Dustin's friends making comments about how Rob wasn't as hot as Dustin made him sound. Because Dustin was so lovestruck he made him sound like a god. But there wasn't a lot of substance to the actual story, aside from Dustin getting funding for his youth programs.
I'd say this book is slow burn. And it's slow burn in a way that I find a bit frustrating. Because there's no real simmering tension because they're on their best behavior to keep things platonic. Yeah they flirt a little, but they have been hands off and there's been a little talk but not a lot of sensuality and chemistry percolating. They didn't let loose until like the 76% mark. Also they totally just wasted 2 years of their lives, because they were completely strangers in that two years and there was no relationship development in that time. All the getting to know each other that they did was limited to that 2-week period that they set for themselves.
Some notable moments:
"He runs down the steps and skids to a stop beside us, glaring at Sophie and Kethe. “And you had to say hello outside? You couldn’t invite him in and let me know he was here? What have you been saying?” He rounds on me. “What have they been saying? It’s probably not true. I’m a delight!” He pouts, hands planted on his hips, and my heart melts even as my cock twitches. How can anybody possibly be this adorably sexy? “You are,” I soothe. “You’re utterly delightful.”"
Red flag! Run! "Sophie: anyhoo, is there any chance I could get a copy of your medical history? And maybe do an exam? I’m learning about human physiology, and a real human to practice on would be great! Sophie: Not that I’ll practice any surgical procedures or anything. Strictly nonsurgical Sophie: Unless you’d be okay with it? Sophie: Just basic exploratory surgery. I could probably find a human surgeon to oversee it. Sophie: Let me know, and I’ll start looking."
*FYI about steam: I rate steam based on a combination of quality & quantity. I note kink separate from steam because I don't want to underrate steamy reads that don't have much kink.
**Note about spoilers: I like to comment on the plot of a book in reviews, so I almost always mark my reviews as containing spoilers. But I try to avoid spoiling the big dramatic moments! As a reader, I personally like to know what I'm getting into before I read a book so I know more about the content and if it's to my taste/mood, so I try to give that information in my reviews for myself when I'm considering rereading and also for other readers.

Segunda parte del Spin-Off llamado Here Be Dragons.
Have to admit that after Alaister from the Hidden Species series it would be quite awhile before another character would make me laugh out loud so very much! Well Ms. Masters has managed it again with Dustin in this book! Adore her writing and the fascinating cast of characters she creates! Can't wait to read book three!
This was okay. I always have fun in this universe because of all the shenanigans with our ensemble cast of characters. I was definitely entertained and found myself chuckling, but this was a bit of a letdown from book one. Dustin and Rob are great characters, and they end up having great communication, but not a lot happens in this book. The overarching story wasn't really all that present and just fell flat. I stayed for the characters in this one and not the story. Louisa Masters knows how to do found family vibes well, that's for sure. And the banter and snark is definitely fun. I like hanging out in this universe, I just wanted a little more to happen in the story.
This was a really adorable read, but did you expect anything less from Dustin's book? The poor dragon has been hot for his professor for 2 years now. In fact, Dustin is convinced Rob is the love of his life, despite never having spent any alone time with the man. Even all the dragons who live in the mansion with him know all about his unrequited love. This of course makes it hilarious when Rob is introduced to different dragons who all seem to ask the same question: "Are you Dustin's professor!?".
Dustin has matured a lot since we first met him in the Hidden Species series. He's worked hard to clean up his act and be taken seriously as an adult. I even felt proud of him when looking at everything he was trying to accomplish. Unfortunately for him, the only thing he can't seem to accomplish is to convince Rob to be his. Rob has a hard time letting go of the idea that Dustin was his student. Even though Dustin is technically thousands of years older than him, Rob's ethics and morals keep him thinking of Dustin as a twenty something student whom he would be taking advantage of. It was admirable, if also a little silly. Thankfully Rob can't resist Dustin for too long and there is plenty of UST to go around. I really liked the two of them together. They couldn't be more different personality wise, but when they were together it was so sweet.
As usual with a book by Louisa Masters there are plenty of LOL moments. This is particularly true when Dragons are involved. Naked Dragon Rides may even have been mentioned and I swear it gets funnier every time I think about that scene from book 1. Poor Percy, he really is never going to escape that. It looks like Fabian's book is next, and I am really looking forward to finding out who is going to make that man whore settle down. I hope they don't make it easy for him.
I received this book from GRR in exchange for a honest and unbiased review **
Dustin is just such a nice guy. I really liked him when we first started seeing him, and now we have his book. I was really happy to see him and his story.
Dustin is just such a sweetie and lots of fun. He is trying very hard to be mature too, and we get to see him being more mature and his grandfather and king accepting his new roles in life.
Rob may just be a human, but he does know about the Community, so finding out about dragons doesn't really throw him at all. Seeing Dustin at a gathering, however, does, especially since Rob knows that Dustin has been crushing on him and he has been crushing on Dustin too.
I loved this book, and I can't wait to read more of the dragons.
meh. there’s nothing I can point to about this book and say “that’s why I didn’t really enjoy it!” but, at the end of the day, I didn’t really enjoy it. there’s something about this spin off series that just doesn’t have the spark. like I’ve enjoyed Dustin in previous books and he was just so… generic here. and while his feels and such felt realistic enough, it felt like phoned-in undiagnosed anxiety and not like the complicated and messy feels I’d have expected from that complex and messy delightful disaster of a character. so it’s cute but boring and I guess the rules thing is meant to convey that it isn’t insta-love except that’s undermined by the insta-love 🤷
This book was so much fun! Watching Dustin go from tongue-tied to an eventual determined pursuit of his professor led to a lot of hilarious moments. And once obstacles were out of the way and they began a “closer” relationship, the chemistry was off the charts! The cast of side characters provided a lot of humor, too, and I’m excited to read more in this series!
So it turns out that while I left the last book feeling optimistic about the series, that feeling hasn't lasted long. I struggled to find anything that I genuinely liked about the book. There were things I didn't mind and things that were decent, but nothing I could point to and say, "That, that part was great."
The book follows Dustin, who we've met before. He's about four thousand years old, and not for a single second did I actually believe it. He's in love with one of his professors, Professor Rob Sarris, but because his feelings seem unreciprocated, he's resigned himself to misery. But with some encouragement, and after he's no longer in Rob's class, he decides to make his move.
And before anything else, I have to say that I've no clue why Dustin and Rob like each other. Dustin decided he was in love with Rob at first glance, and that was that. And Rob... I don't know. I never saw a real connection there.
I haven't read any of Masters' contemporary books, so I can't speak for them, but in my experience, with the exception of Sorcerers Always Satisfy, Masters' romances have always left something to be desired. But with the Hidden Species series, there was always another plot to focus on. Here it's just romance. In fact, and I didn't realize this until another reviewer mentioned it, but you can remove everything supernatural from this book and it would make no difference to the story because the supernatural has little to do with it.
Next, the age. Why does Dustin have to be four thousand years old if he's going to act like a twat by publicly throwing himself at a guy who's clearly not comfortable with it? Like, I know he's supposed to have an irresponsible past, but he's been alive for four millennia, and if he hasn't been able to grasp the concept of personal space in that time, then what does that say about the kind of person he is?
What Dustin needs is to find a setting between nervously-stumbling-over-his-words and probably-sexual-harassment, and dial it there.
Before I go on, I should say that the book is fairly readable for the first half. There are some interactions between characters that are entertaining. I liked Rob's relationship with his mother. I also liked seeing some old faces again. Though can have we have Noah occasionally say something nice about Andrew instead of just bitching about him? Banter aside, the two are supposed to be in love.
Anyway, there's not much to the book after the initial entertainment fades. The romance, as I said, didn't work for me. I didn't particularly like either protagonist. There are no other storylines and not much new info about the Community or dragons. Even the side characters were just eh. I'm finding dragons to be unimpressive so far. They're just kinda silly and not much else.
Overall, I didn't enjoy this book and I had to force myself to finish it. Masters needs to start giving her book a story beyond Person A falls in love with Person B because that ain't workin' so well.
I love this world, and am enjoying the spin off series. I loved Dustin the first time I ‘met ‘ him. His and Rob’s story is a lovely mix of great characters, and fun. I laughed out loud at some of the dialogue, and dragons are definitely on the same wavelength as hellhounds. It was great catching up with other characters too, especially Percy, who is one of my favourites.
The details are what make this series and its characters, like Dustin now being able to read English without a translator spell but not being able to write it. Dustin is a great character. I love his bubbly personality and enthusiasm for helping others. I loved how Rob is determined to just stay friends for x amount of time and how that unravels. He’s a good guy determined to do the right thing by Dustin, although Dustin’s not the 20ish year old he appears... Nice twist with Rob’s family too.
Fabian is great with his total lack of social clues, and I’m pleased he’s getting his own book next. Stef is a hoot with his conspiracy theories. I liked the introduction of Rob’s parents too. I hope we see more of them. I liked seeing how settled Percy is with the dragons, and how he’s found his home since moving on from being the Lucifer. Dustin’s friend, Zara, rocks. I hope she gets introduced to his world at some point and finds her own HEA.
I thought this was a fun, feel-good read, and I’m already hanging out for the next book in the series.
Dustin and Rob are so adorable. Dustin a 2000 year old dragon is so excited to be the first dragon to go to college. His first class, he falls in love with the professor. He keeps it chaste and unrequited for 2 years while Rob is actually his professor. After no longer being Rob's Student they meet at a party for the paranormal society.Rob is the stepson of an incubus, so is aware of the paranormal beings. They negotiate a two week no sex rule to have time to build a foundation for their relationship. Dustin continues to prove he is now a responsible adult able to help his society thrive.
The book is angst free and overflowing with humor and banter. The dragons have a childlike innocence when navigating the human world. There is no fire breathing or battles to the death. With the crazy mixed up events in the real world, it is nice to escape into something filled with warmth and love.
I've been looking forward to Dustin's book ever since we met him in the Hidden Species series and even if I adored him to bits and was really happy with his new career path, I was a bit let down by Rob. He was supposedly older, Dustin's professor, and Dustin fell for him at first sight, but honestly, I found it difficult to feel the connection, the chemistry between them, and that made me really sad. The sex was hot, because Ms. Masters is brilliant at that, but there was something missing. Maybe the fact that Rob made Dustin wait for so long put me off a bit? *shrugs* I have no clue.
The dragons were so much fun, though. From Dustin's grandfather to Fabian and everyone in between, their antics were hilarious.
Overall, it was a good, fun read, very low-angst, and no real conflict, other than Rob being difficult. I'm looking forward to Fabian's book now! Recommendable!
*** Copy provided by GRR for my reading pleasure, a review wasn't a requirement. ***
Low-angst, hilarious, and just wildly fun as all books that Masters has written in this world have been. The first book in this spin off series was just okay for me, I think I missed the action subplot of the original series, but with this one I was able to just sit back and enjoy the ride and really loved the book. We've seen Dustin really come into his own over these two series and in this book he's competent, mature (or as mature as dragons can be), and wholly prepared to be the man Rob needs. There's not much plot to this one, but there was a lot of laughs, a great cast of characters, and a very sweet romance.
4.5 Enjoyable, low angst, low drama. Dustin has matured since his arrival in the human realm and it was great to see the character growth there. Rob was an interesting character, a human who is connected to the community, so there's no drama about the dragon reveal. This one was less silly than some of them, mainly because Dustin is trying so hard to be this new version of himself. The romance was sweet and they were adorable together.
