STRETCH: 7 easy daily movements to support your joints, mobility and wellbeing

Rate this book
Ever wake up in the morning with aches and pains? Does your job keep you hunched over a desk for hours a day? Perhaps you are a runner with a good level of fitness but can barely touch your toes? If the answer is yes – it’s time to STRETCH!

There has been a lot of emphasis from both public health campaigns and the wellness industry on getting people moving ‘more’. We all now know that we are supposed to do 10,000 steps per day and many of us possess some sort of wearable tech to track how much distance we cover; however, how we move is still somewhat ignored.

Due to the sedentary nature of modern life, the destiny for many is muscles and joints that slowly tighten over the years. All of a sudden you realise that you can’t sit comfortably in a squat, touch your toes or get up from sitting on the floor without using your hands. In life, if we don’t use the movement, we lose the movement.

In STRETCH, professional movement coach Roger Frampton is here to tell you that flexibility and mobility should really be likened to brushing your teeth daily, on waking up and before you sleep. His TED Talk “Why Sitting Down Destroys You” has been viewed over 3 million times and his revolutionary approach to functional fitness emphasises the importance of conscious movement. Combining light bodyweight exercises, gentle twists and elongating stretches, STRETCH is a daily programme of seven essential movements (with three variations of each) to help combat the key areas of the body that have lost functionality, improve overall wellbeing and fight the negative effects of a sedentary lifestyle. All without a gym membership.

“This book has definitely made me rethink my priorities when it comes to a workout – it’s the perfect way to start your mobility journey!” – Tom Daley, Olympic swimmer

Exactly what the title says: a book about stretching and the seven stretches that (according to Frampton’s method) can help you find your natural mobility and combat the effects of too much sitting and/or a sedentary lifestyle. I went from a largely sedentary desk job (that felt like it was literally killing me) to motherhood (very busy, obvi) to an active job, where I walk at least five miles every day. I will never go back to sitting all day, if I can help it. For me, movement is life and so thoroughly tied to my well-being, and I have a love of yoga and mindful presence in my body. So this book and its message is thoroughly in my interest zone.

The poses, some of them, look like postural yoga as we know it in the west, with some interesting adjustments to deepen and find sensation, and the idea of staying in poses longer is moving toward a yin-style, but without the emphasis on more “plastic” tissues. I have good range of motion and so tend to focus more on strength at end-range, but I can see how this method would/could be so helpful to people that have been neglecting natural movement. I’m interesting in the idea that if you do not use certain joints, you start to lose the ability to use them…yogi squat, anyone?

Short review: sit is bad, stretch is good

Not-as-short review: it seems typical that when exercise/fitness gurus write books, they tend to repeat over and over why their method is so brilliant and will change your life, plus all the health benefits, etc. Frampton is only a little guilty of that. He brings up some great points, such as how you can add variants to stretches to increase or decrease the intensity, rather than just passively being in a stretch position for however many seconds/minutes. I’m looking forward to adding these stretches to my daily routine.

Excellent book

Rather than go into a long dialogue about how dysfunctional modern life is for our bodies, this book gets to the point. The stretches involve complex movements, but there are always pictures of the stretch that follow a step by step instructions. I am now able to stretch out my hips, which loosens my lower back. This book has improved the quality of my life.

The book might have been better as just a blog article.
It felt like a long read to get to the core of the book, the stretches.
I might adjust the rating up or down after trying them.

Good stretching guidelines

Good stretching guidelines to use to improve your body. It is difficult at start, but you can feel the stretch.
