Their Obsession #2

The Masks and The Dancer

Rate this book
The Masks
We kidnapped her.
She was our revenge.
She fought against our darkest desires.
She shone a light on our pitch black souls.
She became our mirror.
She made us see.
And what do monsters do when they stare at their reflection?
They break the fu*king glass.

The Dancer
They kidnapped me.
I was their vengeance.
They used and abused me, they degraded and humiliated me.
But I fought back.
I held up the mirror. I made them see.
Only for them to shatter it into a million pieces.
And what does a girl like me do to the men who break her?
She cuts the b*stards and makes them feel.

WARNING: This is an 18+ dark, contemporary, captive/kidnap reverse harem romance and contains graphic sex scenes, non-con and dub-con, violence, and other subject matter that some may find triggering. This story will have a HEA, but of course it will be hard won.

4.5⭐️ This duet is a perfect example of why I love dark romance so much. Listen, this was not an easy journey. These men are deeply traumatized, carrying so much hate and pain from the way they were conditioned, raised, and the horrible things they endured. This is not a quick, easy path to redemption. There are so many struggles and really hard moments that were tough to read, and there were times I wasn’t even sure if I liked these men. But then you get to the healing, and it’s absolutely beautiful to witness them strip themselves down and become the people they were always meant to be. There’s just something so powerful in a story like that.

There are so many layers to this duet that I absolutely loved. There’s almost a supernatural feel to it super interesting, but never over the top or cheesy.

I also adored the setting and atmosphere. It had this Gothic vibe, with a Scottish castle in the middle of nowhere, and the plot was fantastic. You have true enemies-to-lovers tension, rival families, revenge, and found family and it all comes together so perfectly. The full circle moments in this book were everythinggggg.

This is definitely an advanced-level dark romance duet. A lot of deep, dark shit happens, but the payoff at the end is 100% worth it.

Christy shows these men that there’s a different path for them, it’s about fate and learning to trust your life in the hands of another.

And of course, with any why choose, there’s some toe-curling, fucking spice. The solo moments with the FMC are incredible, but damn, the group scenes hit differently.

This story is definitely going to stick with me. It’s raw, super emotional, dark as hell, and felt completely refreshing and unique. I absolutely loved this ride and I can’t wait to explore the rest of this world.

* spoiler below if you haven’t finished book 2*

Of course, the one who fucking murdered her ended up being my favorite MMC I did not see that shit coming 😂😂😂😂 I was like there’s no way we’re gonna come back from that and somehow we did

She was stolen away in the middle of the night. It was revenge, nothing more. She was nothing more. Zero. Nothing. Naught. Now they can't get her out of their thoughts. She met the devil, the monster, and the demon but saw through them to the angel, the man, and the boy. She saw their cruelty and forced them into the light. Their humanity and their hearts are now in her hands.

This is a brilliantly written book about the devastation of the human soul and its power to heal. It's tragic, agonizing, and darkly disturbing. It caused a visceral reaction in me at times, my breathing was labored and my hands shook. I can't say I enjoyed every part of it; it was distressing. However, it was genuine, never gratuitous, and there could be no redemption without true understanding. The Masks were severely abused, damaged, and broken in ways most can never comprehend. It can and will trigger readers, so be warned. Did it go too far? No. I work with Survivors of Torture. Never underestimate the human ability to creatively harm another. It was a fascinating concept to contemplate. Men raised to see kindness as weakness, good as evil, and cruelty and brutality as strength. How do you unteach a lifetime? When society's beliefs are the opposite of all you have ever known, can you change your ingrained thoughts? It's fascinating. And in the end, so simple. Yet simple does not mean easy. Christy was strength, love, and grace personified. She was the answer for every horror.

The complexity of this book must be emphasized. It wasn't just the transformation of The Masks but of everyone in the castle. The castle had been home to so many atrocities, so many wrongs, yet it had also been a place of refuge and safety for some. Its history was as twisted and perverse as its inhabitants. Now with The Collector gone, it has a chance for a new beginning. Pasts and pains were exposed. Christy and the other Numbers were all included in a personal journey as well. The time for hiding is over. Along with the agonies, there was love within the castle, some unexpected and twisted, still powerful. But what struck me most was the bravery. So many single instances of how brave humans can be. How we bravely fight to survive, to overcome. How we bravely fight for love and for our souls. The bravery of humanity. The beauty of humanity unmasked.

Dark and depraved story with exquisite detail and raw emotions

This was a highly anticipated release for me and Bea Paige delivered a dark and depraved story with exquisite detail and raw emotions. After the events that transpired in book one, we knew book two would be a difficult journey but with a satisfying and well-deserved ending.

While a considerable amount of redemption and evolving was required in order to achieve a HEA between the characters, it was not a simple course. Each character had their own hurtles to overcome that took time, patience and understanding. The men all suffered their own trauma and each needed something different to piece themself back together, the main component being the FMC. She was the catalyst to their change and guided them through their transitions into becoming their best selves, who they were prior to their trauma.

A raw and powerful conclusion to a dark duet, this is another great addition to Bea Paige’s book universe.

PHENOMENAL

Just wow what a life changing journey they all take in the final of Their Obsession duet!

They all go on such a emotional, gut wrenching traumatic road to become better! And love how strong Christy is to take on the Devil, the Monster and the Demon!

I felt like I was on this journey with them, I felt their pain, their hope as their love grew.

Such an brilliantly written book that captures your heart and won’t give it back!

This duet was the first books I have read by Bea Paige and she did not disappoint.

This book was not as twisted and dark as book one and moved into redemption and love Christy and the masks.

Bea brilliantly gave the characters forgiveness, redemption and love. And the book was about the strength and love of family above all else.

I will definite as some point read Penn’s series and look forward to Grim’s and Beast’s book.

Love the lead in at the end of the book into Thirteen/Cynthia’s story. Can’t come soon enough 😊🤗

What a finale! The Masks, the stolen dancer, and the Menagerie are back in this heart stopping coda to the Their Obsession duet. And what a psychologically rich conclusion to this seductive and enigmatic story- one full of darkness and action but whose real heart is the existential awakening of the namesake characters and those around them. This is a story that is so much more than the words on the page- this is a story about the legacy of trauma and pain and the restorative potential of selfless love.

This story is certainly decadently dark, even as our Masks learn to reawaken the pieces of their humanity, it doesn’t fully erase the dark parts of their souls. The dangerous, cruel, and punishing reality of the menagerie is still front and center, and Bea goes there. But whereas darkness was dished atmospherically in the first book, to build our setting and to unmask the brutality and brokenness of our there leading men and to magnify the trauma of Christy’s survival, in book 2 the darkness really serves as a contrast, a pithy juxtaposition to the journey of the story- the masks’ release from its hold. We can’t truly see how far the Masks have fallen, how much of their souls have been lost, without seeing the worst in them. And we can’t truly understand what a herculean journey it is for them to find healing and redemption without the contrast of their depravity. But whereas the dark wowed, seduced, and distressed in book 1, it’s the tenderness that compels in book 2. The little moments and gestures where we see a spark of more in the Masks. And that is where this book really excels- in the quiet moments, the intimate ones, the ones still enough for us to see the humanity and feeling slowly seeping out of the Masks. Those parts of the story grab you whole. The subtle complexity of them, the brilliant way she composes an existential crisis that is equal parts violent and peaceful are so profoundly riveting, so much so I was scared to breathe for fear of breaking the transfixing emotional spell these characters have on each other.

It’s in those moments where the character journey of the Masks comes to life. And it’s so much more than a character journey- these characters move mountains when it comes to their own metaphysical rebirth. From the start, I found this duet to be such a thrilling and complicated psychological study. A study of the tension of nature and nurture when it comes to our identities, a study of the complicated and duplicitous cycle of trauma, of the universality and specificity of personal pain. This is a story about how the warring tendencies for goodness and darkness easily coexist within us, how easily adversity tips the scales, but how ultimately the key to maintaining humanity comes down to conscious choice. That is the journey of the Masks- their zero becomes their EVERYTHING, and in doing so she shines light on the parts of themselves they thought were dead. The mask they wear have always been an allegory, a physical manifestation of the thematic richness of this story. These three men sacrificed their identities and their humanity for the safety of darkness and anonymity. And as we learn more and more about them, we discover just how the monsters they were shaped into were a huge part of their survival. They buried their humanity to cope , and the only question remains, is there any left? And with Christy chipping away at the illusion, the artifice they’ve created when it comes to who they are, will they fight it? Because even if their darkness comes from a painful past, somewhere along the way they started to relish it- be seduced by the power it gave them. So it’s really not about whether the masks can evolve, it's if they are willing. But Bea doesn’t just unmask them, she SHATTERS them, completely. Each in their own way. And we see a whole new dimension to our ruthless masks. Some may think their evolution is lightning speed, but I love how Bea gives it urgency, how easily their humanity is freed, because love is what breaks them.

And while the Mask journey is poignant and gripping, lest we not forget whose story this really is- Christy’s. Hers is the courage I laud the most. Sure, the Masks have to face hard truths and courageously face their demons in this story, but the real bravery lies with Christy. The stolen girl who is courageous enough to not just challenge them, but to ultimately to love them. Compassion, empathy, and forgiveness require true vulnerability and risk, and despite her powerless position and her own trauma, Christy finds the fortitude to open her heart and to see something worth saving in these seemingly heartless men. She has the hardest metamorphosis of all, because not only does she have to catalyze the existential liberation of others, but she also has to find and embrace her own power. The meek, kidnapped dancer becomes Bea’s most powerful and fierce heroine to date- not because of her grit or edge, but because of the magnitude of her heart.

Ironically Bea’s most dark and devastating story also is her most hopeful one- from tragedy and pain comes restoration and healing. Our characters finally stopping hiding away as a form of survival and find a way to thrive- because they lean into the parts of themselves that are hurt, into the feelings that leave us vulnerable. But that vulnerability is the ultimate strength, what lets our humanity win, what let’s love heal. What keeps us free. If only we are brave enough to choose to breathe into that part of ourselves. And that’s the power of Bea Paige in this story- yet another breathtakingly engaging, emotionally resonant, and perfectly poignant story of the indomitable but complicated nature of the human heart.

I'm so emotional 🤣🙈 so many sad tears then sobbing with happy tears too!!🖤 I cant even tell you how much I love this book, i was absolutely hooked. I was sobbing throughout, I thought my heart was broken in the first book... hahaha.... it got obliterated in this one.. the flash backs to the past and finding out what our guys went through ruined me... this book is all about redemption and its utterly brilliant. The journey to their HEA is pure carnage and savage, there is a part in the book when we get a flash to the future and my world spiralled.. I was like HELL NO!! This cannot come to pass 🥺😢😟.... Bea's writing is fantastic, we should all be hating these guys with everything weve got, and at times i really did! But a part of me was secretly routing for them all! The way Christy helped each individual guy get through their tragic pasts was AMAZING. I wont go into detail about much because you need to go into this book completely open minded... this book is DARK. PLEASE CHECK ITS OK FOR YOU!! 🖤 I'm used to dark books but some parts even had me squirming!! I love it 😂 I dont know why I enjoy torturing myself with these emotional rollercoaster books but the high you get when they finally get that HEA is 1000% worth it 😁👌🏼 we got some surprised POV from some amazing characters!! 🥰 the crossovers had my heart bursting!! 😁 .... The masks and their dancer are back! I have been waiting for this one for a long time. I have read books by this author before but damn, this one has to be the darkest read of hers yet. The masks and the dancer have a twisted Tale that contains non con and kidnapping and is definitely not for the faint hearted.

This book picks up right where the first one ended, it is amazing and I love it a lot! We finally got to see them get their happy ending and that was the best part. They all never had an easy life and I am happy they finally have peace. As usual, I wanted our anti heroes to grovel a bit more but it's fine. This one is part two of a duet and book one needs to be read first.

Definitely recommending this one to all the dark romance loving people out there. Make sure that you don't mind triggers like dub con, non con, kidnapping, humiliation and kink!

• 4.5/5 ⭐ • 5/5 🌶️ •

p r o s :
• here i was, thinking that The Dancer and The Masks was sooo eventful... it holds no comparison to this 🥹
• while the last book sold me on the plot, this is where i fell in love with ALL of the characters. idk how Bea Paige was able to make the masks so fucking lovable, but goddammit if a bitch wasn't swooning over all three of them 😩 christy's selflessness and her need to heal & protect the masks? loved. thirteen coming out of her shell and finding her voice after years of trauma compartmentalization? which led to cyn becoming the most loyal friend ~ever~??? ADORED.
THE PLOT TWISTS!!! there were so fucking many. without adding any spoilers, all i'll say is nala's story left me an emotional wreck.
• WHAT KIND OF DUET ENDS WITH A CLIFFHANGER THIS HUGE?!?!?!? looks like i'll be reading Debts and Diamonds for my next bea paige fix 🫠

c o n s :
• while the smut was top tier, a lot of the spice scenes (mostly the second half of the book) seemed unnecessarily long. like okay, they had a foursome, i get it. but each scene did not need to be 7-9 pages long.

Okay but how does Bea Paige keep writing these amazing books?!? I fell in love with this book and the guys. We love seeing a redemption arc and this is what this book is all about. Well along with a lot of other things 😂 I love that we really get more background information on the guys and we see how they grew up. Like okay Bea just stab me in the heart why don’t you because the emotional trauma I went through reading this was 😭😭😭

I loved actually seeing these four finally start figuring their relationships out and healing each other. The plot of this book is once again top notch and I loved reading it. We can’t forget about the 🌶️🌶️ which is also 👨🏻‍🍳💋 I also loved how this book leads into the next series which is The Deana-Dhe Duet and I can’t wait to read these books. Do yourself a favor and read this series! Basically just read anything from Bea Paige!

The Masks And The Dancer | 5 stars!

This book was outstanding! It was such a raw and heart shattering story. I am speechless right now….

This book was a freaking masterpiece and it shows that redemption is possible. You get to see the masks past and let me tell you it’s heartbreaking. The things they have been through have taken away their true emotions and all that was left is a shred of their humanity. Christy was such a strong and fearless character in this story. No matter what happened to her, she kept going. The way she handled everything with the masks was amazing to read about and honestly I just can’t believe how amazing this story was.

This is a dark story that will take you into the minds of the masks and their thought process. As well as what Christy is going through. You learn so much in this series about the thought process of tortured villains and the people trapped in their games. But, as I said there is also redemption and this book shows that it’s possible.

There is so much more I would like to say, but no spoilers! So, you’ll just have to read this amazing series!

The steammm is off the charts and let me just say it gets intense!

You may wonder if they get their happily ever after. Well, I won’t say anything, but it’s definitely a journey to get to where they are now.
I seriously need thirteens book!! I’m so curious about her story!!

Seriously though this book was amazing and I can’t wait to read more books by Bea Paige!

Please make sure to check trigger warnings!

Thank you for providing me with an ARC!!

Whooo, this one was a doozy!
So much to unpack. I’ve been waiting for this book since I finished reading The Dancer and the Masks last year.
I reread The Dancer and the Masks immediately before starting this one because I needed a refresher on everything that happened leading into this book as it picks up right after the first book ends.
Reading the two books together, the character that I feel has the most believable character arc and development is Leon. He is the one Mask that I see actually having realistic growth and change through the books, because he actually has the whole second book to grow.
Konrad and Jakub’s “growth” on the other hand felt rushed and it was hard for me to believe that they changed just by having one scene each of what comes across as “magically healing sex” with Christy.
I enjoyed getting to know the side characters and Numbers more throughout this book and that we are set up for Thirteen’s books, which I am definitely looking forward to, but I almost feel like I wish time in the book that was sent setting up that story had been used to show more action and growth for Konrad and Jakub.
With that said I also wish more time had been spent actually growing the love between the characters and showing them actually getting to know each other as people. There is one scene where they share five facts about each other and then they go and have more sex. I’m all for sexy time but I need more to believe that Christy can go from hating to loving these men just from sex, learning their abusive pasts, and five facts about each of them.
There are A LOT of dark and triggering scenes in this book with triggers that are not listed including graphic scenes of child abuse (physical) with mentions of (sexual). There’s also and instance of suicide. I appreciate us getting this looks into the past of the Masks because it helps us understand the characters better but it’s A LOT so be sure that you’re in a good state of mind and able to handle it.
The author really does a good job with these deep inside looks at the characters pasts and using put emotions of empathy to make us want the Masks to heal and learn how to love.
I enjoy the paranormal elements and running theme of Fate throughout the two books and Christy’s gift as a seer.
All in all I liked but didn’t necessarily love this book but will continue to read more books from Bea Paige.

I have been not so patiently waiting for this book to release for just about five months after I inhaled the first book and was left on quite the brutal cliffhanger! Oh man, it was so worth the wait and had everything I wanted and didn't know I needed! I have so many things that I loved about this book that it'll be hard to list them all but I'm still going to try! First of all, the writing was absolutely beautiful. I don't know what it is about Bea's writing in particular but for every one of her books I read I fall in love with the way things are written and there were several points that I was tearing up with how much emotion I felt while reading, which I think is even more impressive considering all of the dark themes in this book. Secondly, the character growth?! Incredible, the way that Christy pulls each one of the masks out of their own version of the dark was beautiful because it happened so differently for each mask. Seeing things from their POV was just as great because you can understand where they are coming from and why they're so scared to take the jump. They're changing themselves in a way that goes against literally everything they were taught since they were kids and all they've ever known, turning your back on who you've been for so long for something that feels too good to be true is terrifying. These men were being haunted by ghosts years after they're gone but watching each one of them make the conscious decision to fight against who they were made to be so they could be and do better because they wanted to was so rewarding. Thirdly, the number of plot twists and bombshells that were dropped throughout this book?! My jaw was dropping every few chapters with something new that I didn't see coming! We also got to lots of cameos towards the end so if you've read any of her other books you'll be seeing some familiar faces! Finally, THAT EPILOGUE! I am both heartbroken that Bea would leave me hanging like that but also so excited because it set the stage perfectly for some characters whose story I have been DYING to read! I fell for each of those characters the moment I met them so catch me counting down the days until Debts and Diamonds comes out! Overall, this duet was nothing short of incredible and this is a must read for lovers of dark RH romance! However, there are a lot of dark, heavy, and potentially triggering topics in this duet so be sure to heed the trigger warnings that are given before you start.

WHAT. AN. ENDING. the their obsession duet is now complete with the release of the masks and the dancer and y'all... this duet is SO. GOOD. it's super dark, the darkest bea paige books to date, so be mindful of that before you dive in but oh man it's amazing.
·
the masks and the dancer picks up where the dancer and the masks left off and i felt like i was on the edge of my seat from the very first page. i honestly had no idea where the story was going to go and hoo boy what a ride it was.
·
i absolutely loved the way the story came together. christy and her masks have been THROUGH IT and i'm so happy with the way their story ended. leon was my favorite from the first book but i think konrad squeaked past just a tad in this book. you know me tho, i still love all of them LOL and christy really came into her own after everything the masks put her through and she became so much stronger.
·
i can't get over how great this duet is. it was dirty, it was dark, but it was also honest and vulnerable in the best ways. if you're looking for something dark and quick (two books as opposed to 4 or more lol) then definitely check this one out! as always, check trigger warnings before diving in, too!

Oh my goodness! I seriously do not have words for how amazing this book was! This book was the perfect ending to the story for the Masks and Christy. This book is not for the light of heart and definitely not for everyone. However, if the trigger warnings don't scare you away then this book is utter perfection. I cannot sing enough praises for this book. It had me on the edge of my seat with what would happen next. I was so happy at points & at others crying tears of devastation. This book put me through the ringer in the best possible way.

The Dancer and the Masks was the first book by Bea Paige that I had read, yes I realize I decided to take the dive into her books off of the deep dark end, but I am so incredibly glad that I did. I am completely hooked on her books & this one was exquisite. The other couples/harems that were teased as possible storylines in this book has me so excited to see where else she will take us. Now I need to go back and read more then the two series that I have read by her.

Please give this dark book a chance. It might make you feel uncomfortable at times & unsure of what you previously thought was your limit, but this book is so worth taking the dive. Well done Bea Paige, this book was so good!

Absolutely BRILLIANT!!! There are no words for how amazing this story, this duet is.

Mind blowing perfection, a masterpiece, breathtaking…I could go on and on but I think you’ve got the point. This author has created not only this story but a duet that is heart wrenching, raw, dark and twisted; one that will make you feel every ounce of pain and emotion these characters feel. She has created a love story full of evil and turned it into one of redemption, self worth and determination for good.

I would love to go on and on but you really need to experience this with no outside influence- all I will say is be mindful of any triggers because this is a dark read, if you’ve got them this may not be for you. Otherwise grab book one and get ready for a book hangover.

Holy christ! There was a point there that I honestly thought she was dead. And I swear to God my heart broke. I didn't want to finish the book because I didn't want to see an ending where she wasn't a part of the book. Yeah there's a big spoiler alert there huh. Anyway I love the book. She is such a great author. And I'm off to read some more books. Because I'm still on this emotional roller coaster over her apparent death. You'll see what I mean. And no I'm not talking about when she actually dies.

Brilliant! Bea Paige does it again

THIS DUET WAS …. RAW, AND HEAVY AND POWERFUL. I CAN’T EVEN TELL YOU HOW MANY TIMES IT DOWN AND STOP. I DON’T TYPICALLY DO HEAVY. BUT EVERY TIME I DID. I’D RUN ACROSS A REVIEW OR A FRIEND WOULD RANDOMLY DM ME WITH ENCOURAGEMENT. @BEAPAIGEAUTHOR IS A FANTASTIC AUTHOR AND SHE DID AN ABSOLUTLY AMAZING JOB. IT TOOK ME ALMOST 2 WEEKS TO FINISH THIS DUET! BUT I WANT MORE! HER STORIES AND CHARACHTERS ARE INTERTWINED AND IN THE SAME WORLD AND I CAN’T WAIT TO SEE WHAT HAPPENS NEXT. CHRISTY AND THE CHARACTERS I’VE MET IN THIS STORY ARE INCREDIBLE. HUMANITY AT IT’S WORST AND BEST.

It was my first Bea Paige series and it won’t be the last. This one is definitely on the darker side but I really want to know more about the characters for other series that crossed over. The masks finally became the men that Christy knew they could be. I love the kill thing with kindness and compassion. Now I need to know more about Thirteen

Looking for a story about redemption? A story that will have your heartbreaking for the villains in the story. A story where the strong female lead makes them earn her love? THE MASKS AND THE DANCER is all of those things and more. There is one part that had me crying and cursing at the same time (my husband was dying with laughter at my emotional breakdown). I'm so honored to have had the opportunity to Beta Read this duet. If you haven't started it yet, book 1, THE DANCER AND THE MASKS, is available on Amazon now. Please know that book 1 is especially dark and this duet is not a sweet love story. There are potential triggers in this duet so please be aware of these before reading. This duet pushed my comfort level with my boundaries, but it was such an emotional read. Christy is a strong, fierce female character (not a kickass badass, but fierce in her determination to not be broken by the horrible torture she endures at the hands of the masks). And the masks must work to overcome the abuse they suffered as children in order to prove they are indeed worthy of love.

Picking right off from the cliffhanger ending in The Dancer and The Masks. The conclusion to Their Obsession duet series, The Masks and The Dancer dives right back into Christy, Konrad, Leon and Jakub’s story through the telling of multiple POVs.

When it came to the narrative, there was a lot to uncover and unravel. Hence why the path that the story paved way for led to a deeply intense, dark, depraved and twisted journey, all within a obstacle and hurdle filled labyrinth that both Christy and The Masks had to venture through and overcome to reach their HEA.

For Konrad, Leon and Jakub aka The Masks, their path was clearly set upon finding and seeking redemption. Something that didn’t come easy or even seem possible at times, given the monsters that they were.
Bea Paige allowed us to delve deeper into the mindset of The Masks, given that with every layer peeled back from Konrad, Leon and Jakub individually, we were able to learn and discover not only the secrets they had been hiding from their past. But to learn the horrors they faced upon the hands of The Collector which was showcased through flashbacks too, creating an even more in-depth picture of all the pain and suffering they endured.
Within the individual dissection of Konrad, Leon and Jakub shown over the course of the narrative, we learned that they had their work cut out for them, when it comes to redemption. Being no easy feat since they were fighting a battle of wills in facing their inner demons from their past. It showed us them realising that it would be an uphill battle trying to overcome the demons and win back what little of humanity they had left inside them. In order for there to be a possibility of having their hearts to be opened again and to give and receive the love for the woman they wanted, Christy.

As for Christy, her journey was one that steered her towards a path in going through trials and tribulations. Testing her personal strength, with her willing to forgive and let bygones be just that, given all that was expected of her and what she needed to do. With her fearlessness and being strong, she didn't allow the weight of the world on her shoulders to break or stop her from doing what needed to be done. Showcasing that she could hold her own and was a tough character, not willing to break down so easily despite all the horrors she had suffered.

Once again every single emotion and feeling from under the sun was poured into this story, causing the narrative to be heavily focused on being emotionally charged.
The times of the raw, nitty gritty and heartbreaking emotions pouring out swept you away in the moment, from how overwhelming and all consuming it truly was.
It had you choked up feeling like you were suffocating from drowning in the overload of it all, ultimately pulling you deep down under with no escape in sight. Especially considering how much heavier it got through the progression of the narrative.

It needs to be said my heart utterly and completely broke for Konrad. While he deserved to be punished for all the pain he caused over the years. The “punishment” he was forced to endure and suffer through was a heavy blow. Having already suffered enough as it was, given Konrad's past and the way he was raised. That particular scene and the aftermath was hard to take in. It was a gut wrenching kick to the stomach, causing my heart to break for him.

Unfortunately there were a few hiccup moments that had me pulling away at times. For instance despite the narrative following Christy and Leon, Konrad and Jakub aka The Masks story, since it was told through multiple POVs. It didn’t feel this way considering (besides Christy) most of the storyline seemed to favour following the perspective of Jakub and Leon more. Whilst Konrad seemed to be shunned to the side, besides a few chapters here and there as if he was a secondary character with no real importance IMO.
In all honesty if Konrad and his backstory had been taken out from the narrative of The Masks and The Dancer, it wouldn’t have made much of a difference IMO. That’s how little importance he seemed to be given IMO, for that I was not a fan since Konrad happened to be my favourite character. Saying that may make me bias because of the favouritism, but it felt that way to me the lesser exploration into him and his story in comparison to the other Masks.
On top of that with there being so much to take in from the bits and pieces that connected together in the completion of the puzzle that was the story of The Masks and The Dancer. It lead to myself having moments of feeling lost and confused at times, being too overwhelmed in trying to absorb all the information that was being given. Ultimately leading to moments of the story being a little too wordy from the heavy flow of all the information stated, causing my attention to wane a little bit at times.

All in all, The Masks and The Dancer was still a good read. Especially when you took in the creativeness behind the storyline with all the different aspects like The Masks, Christy's premonitions, the castle and The Numbers.
Hence why I am looking forward to reading Thirteen’s book.

3.5 stars rounded up to 4. That star rating makes it seem like I think this is mediocre – and I don’t. I had a good time reading it.

Bea Paige is still one of the best RH authors out there, her world is as immersive as ever, the writing is darkly seductive, the borderline supernatural elements of this story are just enough to be tantalizing without pushing it over the edge into being a paranormal book.

The side characters are the highlight. It was a joy to get so much set-up for the Deana-dhe books, and to see Grim and Beast again. Dax, York and Xeno get cameos too. And the way Cassidy and Jonathan's story ends with them intersecting with the Breakers is an unexpected delight. The last 5% of this book is a delicious treat for fans of the Breakers.

But, what’s missing from that summary of what was great about this book? Oh yeah, the main characters.

It’s not that they’re bad – Christy remains a heroine with an incredible inner strength, and the Masks aren’t boring, even if they’re not as compelling as the Breakers. But I wasn’t sold on their relationship progressing from The Masks being her captors who are planning to kill her to suddenly being in love with her.

This is a book that has a lot on its mind, about redemption and forgiveness and the capacity to change and be better. Those are all ideas that I like reading about! But, I didn’t feel that the execution of these ideas was convincing on a character level. Especially for Jakub, since he’s still doing horrible things around the 50% mark and then he professes his love for Christy not long after. At one point, he refers to himself as “the old me” versus “the person I am today." My dude, it’s only been like, a week within the timeline of this story! He was his “old” self just a few days ago!

The Masks and Christy are all compelling on an individual level. But as this story shifted them into having a romance, I didn’t buy their connection on that level. At one point, Christy said that she’s NOT only with them because of her visions and letters from her dead mom telling her that it's Fate. And as a reader, I was like, “Aren’t you, though?" In another part, she mentions that they've barley had regular conversations and barely know each other. Yes! Exactly! That leads to a scene where she does a game to find out 5 facts about them. But one single scene does not fix this issue.

Leon was the main one where it felt like their connection could be something believably lasting — partly because of their past as kids, and partly because he gets this whole book for development on that front where Jakub only gets half the book. But his relationship with Christy still paled in comparison to Pen’s with the Breakers or Grim and Beast, even though they haven't even gotten their own book, yet. Despite being side characters, Grim and Beast's connection still feels more natural, convincing, and epic than Christy's does with The Masks.

So that’s why I give it a 3.5 star rating. I don’t see myself re-reading this the way that I’ve re-read the Breakers. That series is a treasure. This one is a part of this world that’s a fine way to pass the time between the better installments of the Breakers and the Deana-dhe’s stories. The mere fact that so much of this book was filled with set-up for the Deana-dhe is pretty telling that this one is filler, and that one will be more meaty and interesting.

But, even though it does feel a bit like filler, it’s well done. This is a solid installment of this addictive tapestry that Bea Paige has woven together and it makes me very glad that more is coming. I can’t wait for Grim and Beast’s story, the Deana-dhe, and any and all other books set in this world.
