"You're bullying me for not understanding things before," my brain was abuzz. I myself couldn't even hear what I was saying, "I understand now." "What do you understand?!" Xing Lie asked. I understood that I was 'Other', eternally different from Xing Lie. This person wouldn't belong to me, because he liked girls. I gritted my teeth, closing my eyes and biting down as I lunged forward. I like you. Do you understand now?
I was so excited about the concept of this book, but it didn’t deliver. Their romance was too rushed, and it didn’t feel like a natural progression.
This was very unfortunate because I love stories with non-human protagonists and seeing their difficulty with navigating human dynamics. I’ve never read about a tree becoming a person before, and it was giving Little Mushroom vibes, so I had high hopes. Unfortunately, the world building was almost non existent, and neither character was well flushed out. There simply wasn’t enough content to develop this story the way it deserved.
This wasn’t bad, but I didn’t love it. I found the middle rather repetitive, although the last quarter of the story improved things enough that I finished the story. The characters were okay, but it would have better if . Overall, I thought that this was cute but that it didn't have enough (sustained) drama to keep me interested. 3 stars.
So cute! I like this kind of healing short stories! It made me laugh that the two trees that appeared in one scene had a name but the ‘saved girl’ and the ‘friend’ never did 🤣
