Moving the Goalposts

Rate this book
Thousand-yard seasons are a cinch. When love hits him hard, will he fumble away his future?

My whole life has led to this. My father was an All-Pro halfback, and I have dedicated every moment to running in his footsteps. But Dad kept a secret from the whole world, even us: He’s gay.

With him retired and out of the closet, there’s a cloud over my prospects. The draft is only months away, and everyone is wondering about me… especially since I don’t have a girlfriend.

But there is John. A total non-jock and nerd, he’s become a great roommate and an even better friend. He’s everything I’ve needed to weather this storm.

So what are these strange feelings I’m having for him? I’m straight, aren’t I?

And if I’m not, is my career over before it even begins?

Moving the Goalposts is the sultry third book in the Tackled by Love M/M sports romance series. If you like conflicted characters, friends-to-lovers, and queer awakenings, then you’ll adore Quinn Ward’s spicy pregame huddle.

this wasn’t bad but i couldn’t stand the characters.
they said things but did the complete opposite.

hunter is a piece of shit honestly. completely selfish and self-absorbed, but of course he claims that he makes his partner his first priority. maybe this happens in another book because we sure as hell didn’t see it in this one.

josh went from shy/awkward/with a giant stick up in his ass to super confident and understanding completely random.

the tension that they were supposed to have at first didn’t exist. sure, we knew it was there because they informed us, but we never saw it. i also feel that i need to point out that they were happily cuddling every night by like 27%.

another thing that bothered me so much was that josh said very early that he wanted hunter to fuck him and hunter said that he didn’t want to be fucked, then that he liked to be fingered but he didn’t see him ever wanting to take a dick and guess what happens????

of course, hunter becomes a bottom!!!! we just casually throw their preferences out of the window.
(btw i am not in any way saying that people can’t change their preferences and discover that they like things they thought they didn’t, it was just done very badly here)

This is such a cute nerd/jock story! I loved it so much! So John and Hunter are roommates and complete and total opposites. John doesn’t like sports and tries to avoid anything that has to do with sports, which includes Hunter who is a football player. Being roommates and trying to avoid each other does not work out very well. With both men going through some tough times they learn that they can be there for each other and seek comfort from one another. Hunter and John were really there for each other and picked each other up when they needed it. They had such a sweet relationship and I really loved seeing their love unfold.

I received a copy of this book from Gay Romance Reviews, and this is my honest review.

Moving the Goalposts is book 3 in the Tackled by Love Series.
It’s an m/m nerd/ Jock romance that can be read as a standalone. Each book focuses on different couples. May have some spoilers for previous books if you decide to read this first but doesn’t effect this story.
John & Hunter are now roommates. John really does not like sports or specifically football. He avoids it at all costs. And equally avoids Hunter too.
Hunter thinks John is a nerd, that’s stuck in the mud, a bit up himself etc and turns his nose up a bit.
This was how they use to be until they start coming together. Hunters dad had recently come out as an gay ex player and been all over the media which Hunter hates. He’s also still upset and angry at his dad for always lying to them but his dad has always 100% been there for him and his mum.
John has had a tough life, living in a small town and coming out as gay was not easy for him. He didn’t have the friends at school or the support of his family. He now hates going home to see them at holidays. He’s been let down massively and they just so happen to be massive football fans!
Poor Hunter not only had the drama of his dad coming out but his dads best friend who is also an ex player is not in great shape from too many hits. Both families have always been close and it’s heartbreaking. Hunter is also nearing the time when he could be picked in the drafts but can he do that knowing what’s happened to his dads best friend. There’s some tough choices.
John is there to talk to, offer advice and comfort. They both need the comfort and interaction.
I loved these two together and are definitely good for each other and definitely committed but things are never easy.
In whole I loved the story. I found some bits slightly contradicting but that didn’t stop me from enjoying this and I’m looking forward to the next book in the series.
Recommended.

This is book 3 of the series, Tackled By Love, by Quinn Ward. In this series, a constant theme is athletes dealing with coming out. That said, coming out is a secondary theme to the relationship and the development of something more than friends. Romance and some other minor themes are then woven into the real deal of athletes daring to openly participate in their LGBT+ community...which includes a public relationship with the person of their choice.

The two protagonists in this book are roommates. John, openly gay and über-focused on his studies is quietly attracted to Hunter. Hunter is an extremely talented junior year football player trying to decide if he wants to finish college or participate in the football draft now, necessitating leaving school. John is dealing with his crush on Hunter and Hunter is suddenly faced with the realization that his sexuality might not be as exclusively straight as he thought. Decisions have to be made. The book has a fairly low level of drama and angst. Real-life issues are addressed. A bit of steam and a happily-ever-after is insinuated.

This is the third book I have read by this author. They have written a number of books, most of which gently deal with issues faced by people who are different than what society teaches as the norm. One thing I love about this author is their passion for writing, which the reader can actually feel when reading the dialogue between the protagonists. The characters are richly developed in one manner or another and when the book is over, you feel sated, but not overly so. The book remains focused on the romance. The coming out and other secondary themes were never overplayed.

There is a 4th book in this series due out in August of 2022 and I am quite eager to read it.

Moving the Goalposts does the same as book two did with book one and overlaps but follows a different couple. This time it's Hunter, Lincoln's son, and his roommate, John. This one has all the feels, is fairly low angst as a slow burn, friends to lovers, nerd/jock romance.
We met Hunter in book two where he, understandably, had some feelings to deal with when it came to his father's coming out after years spent as a family with Hunter and his mum. Now he's processing his own new found attraction to a guy and I loved how he and John slowly grow closer, starting with comfort and cuddling before it develops into more. It felt like a really natural development between them, not rushed at all, just another step forward in their relationship.
There's a bit going on outside of them as a couple, too. John deals with going for a visit back home for winter break with a family who've never been that supportive of him since he came out several years ago. Patrick, Hunter's godfather and his dad's best friend, has an accident that also happened in book two and so there is the fallout from that along with his illness and the knowledge of possible injuries in Hunters future has John wanting to help. It's interesting and more real with the inclusion of the harmful aspects of American football.
I've really enjoyed this series so far and this is a great addition to it. Hunter and John make for an equally sweet and hot couple and I love how things end for them, finishing at the same time as book two. Next, I'm hoping for good things for Tanned as he deserves happiness after the last several years with his father.
I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.

This author continues to speak to me through their words. I’ve previously expressed my appreciation of the other side of football with the last two books, but this author has continued with their knowledge of the game with the life of a player leading up to the draft. There is so much more that goes into this game then the plays on the field, the intensity of the workouts, hours put in, and the commitment required is all included once again.

“𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗻𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗲𝗱 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝗺𝘂𝗰𝗵 𝗵𝗼𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘀𝗲𝘅 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗯𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝗶𝘁’𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗷𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗹𝗶𝗰𝗸 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗯𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘁𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗼𝗳𝗳 𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲?”

Omg! John and Hunter were explosive together! Their chemistry was intense, magnified by their electrifying connection. The patience John exhibits with Hunter was authentically nice, especially since this was Hunter’s first time with a man. Outside of the bedroom, they were perfect for one another. Genuinely complementing the other, with such an ease and flow of emotions.

As with the first two, diving into the seriousness of the sport was discussed more in depth. I truly appreciated the opportunity the author has taken to bring this to the table, bringing awareness of CTE, in hopes of changing the game to make it safer for future players. Definitely cannot wait to read Tanner and Landry’s story as we will get a better look at the aftermath of a loss.

Hunter and John are, on the surface, opposites: Hunter is a football star, a slob, and a bit self-absorbed, although he does try, most of the time, not to be. John is studious, self-effacing, and much neater than Hunter. I think the fact that John is willing to cook for and clean up after Hunter is supposed to be endearing, but I found Hunter’s willingness to be waited on a little off-putting: I get it, not all couples divide work equally, but I can’t think of a single thing Hunter does for John other than…exist in his presence, I guess? Still, their roommates-to-lovers romance is full of sweet gestures like borrowed pillows and sweatshirts, earnest conversations, and some steamy moments. Also, watching Hunter slowly grow as a person as well as an athlete is mostly a rewarding experience. While this could technically work as a standalone romance, I’d strongly recommend reading the previous book in the series, False Start, for context on Hunter’s parents and some of the major events and supporting characters that shape the story.

A Jock, A nerd, roomates with chemistry!!!

Contains: jock/nerd trope, roommates, bi-awakening.

*I read it as a standalone. Everything is pretty well explained. No confusion at all.

In this book, we have a jock who has a bi awakening towards his roommate. First time gay bases. We also have as a collateral a frightening fear of danger related to the dangerous sport of football. John's family finally begins to understand and do their best to be more acceptable. Hunter's family is reconstituted and also includes his father who is gay.

I loved it and recommend it to anyone who likes awakening and stereotype breaking jocks.

The only downside is
that I would have absolutely loved to have seen the reaction to his father and partner when he showed up at their house with his boyfriend. (It have a claim your copy of Hunter's rookie year and John's outlook at the end of the book... still waiting for my copy, hopefully, that my finale is in that copy)

I really enjoyed the relationship between Hunter and John in book 3 but I must say I was surprised how easily he fell for John when he had so many issues with Lincoln when he started his relationship with Nixon. There were some pretty large inconsistencies from book 2 to book 3, particularly around how they told Hunter about Patrick's death and how he took the news and that was an issue I did have but if I read it as a stand alone I would have not noticed it. I thought John was a great complement to Hunter and they brought out the best in each other.

What I did not like was that I would have liked to see how some of Hunter's friends and teammates felt about the relationship, particularly Brandon who had issues in book 2. Also for as close as Hunter was with Lincoln I could not believe he didn't tell him sooner and that as a reader we did not get to see that particular story unfold.

Overall a great read but I felt like it needed more.

Hunter was a young man with some serious issues in book two of this series and I wasn't sure how thrilled I was to see him as a main character is this one. However, he does some major growing up in this book thanks to his roommate John. John's friendship and calming presence through any rough times have Hunter feeling things he never expected to for another man. He begins to understand what his father was feeling in the second book and starts to reassess his priorities and his behavior. Unfortunately, John doesn't believe him when he begins to open up about his feelings, a completely understandable reaction, and Hunter has to do some hard work to convince John his feelings are real. I am in love with this series. There is enough sports content to make the story realistic but not so much that a non-sports fan couldn't enjoy the plot and characters. Characters behave in age appropriate ways and those of all ages grow and develop through the course of each book.

The way Ollie and Xander first meet is an epic meet cute! I laughed so hard at Xander's observations of awkward Ollie with his massage table! Ollie is such an adorable Clutz in real life but a very talented masseuse! Xander and Ollie have adorable banter together and how they instantly connect into comfortableness with each other just flows off the pages! It is a perfect progression of a kind of friends to lovers. Xander's demisexuality is represented beautifully. Xander and Ollie are everything together! Sweet and Tender as well as Steamy! I received an ARC and Highly recommend this five-star series! I fell in love with every one of these romances and all the characters! This can be read as a standalone, but I recommend all of them!

Hunter and John are friends first, who became best friends and then lovers. I think it is the best foundation for a relationship, for me anyways.

Coming into your own truth and finally realizing why the person you love has kept his real self hidden all these years is not an easy feat, especially if you are getting yourself ready to be drafted into the professional football league. But witnessing the death of a loved one and coming to terms with how life can be so short, you don't want to waste time going after your dreams and after the man you love at the same time.

Hunter has gone through a lot of changes in such a short time, but with John by his side, he is getting through it.

Congratulations Ms. Ward for such a beautiful series, I can't wait to read more!

John and Hunter ❤️

This book......swoon!!! I loved it, I adored Hunter and John, both together and individually....they were both such lovable characters. The Nerd/Jock...opposites attract dynamic in this book was so on point. These two men couldn't me more different yet they were there for one another in the sweetest supporting ways, they form a friendship that was endearing and heartfelt. This relationship was sweet, sexy and adorable...I truly couldn't get enough of these guys and I hated to see it end...although they do get a sweet HEA ❤️ so there's that. I recommend this book, especially for those who've read the first 2 in this series...IMO this was the best one yet.

I am thoroughly enjoying reading this series Tackled by Love by Quinn Ward. I love how it is not only a new couple in each book, but that the stories intertwine. While we read one, scenes are set and appear in the next book. So original and have not experienced that before. It is not flash backs to the past, but currently taking place at the present time in different books.
Hunter, the son of Lincoln and Isabella, was sharing an apartment with John and realised he was attracted to him. How they get through the following months is told through times of doubt, death, hurt, decisions made, change in career path and so much more.
I am looking forward to reading the remainder of the series.

This is a roommates to lovers/bi awakening romance.

We met Hunter is Linc and Nix’ book. He’s Linc’s son and we get a little of his story.

John and Hunter are roommates. But the aren’t friends. They are from two different worlds. But when they finally try to be civil they find themselves becoming closer then either expected. They become so close Hunter starts to think he might not be as straight as he thought. But they have to navigate through both their goals in life and figure out how they can get their happy ending. I think the only thing I didn't like is I felt like we didn’t get enough at the end. I’m hoping we get a bit more of their story in Landry and Tanner’s book.

Such a great book. Heartfelt and heartwarming. Sweet and steamy. Hunter is a football player trying to make a career for himself under the shadow of his famous pro-baller Dad. He's having a good year and wants to go ahead with the Pro football draft now instead of waiting to graduate from college. He's always considered himself as straight. Then how can he explain the feelings he is having for his roommate John? He wants to kiss John and touch him. Everything begins to shift between them when John lends an ear to Hunter who is having a rough day. They begin to get to know each. Can the two become more than just friends? I highly recommend.

This has been a fantastic series. This was a fantastic nerd jock story within the Tackled by Love series!! John and Hunter are roommates and so freaking opposite! Hunter is a football player, John doesn’t like sports. Hunter thinks that John is a nerd. When John came out, times were tough for him. Hunter’s dad comes out and Hunter hates it. I loved how John was there for Hunter to talk to. Overall, loved it, a fantastic read. The story was well written, highly recommend. I’m voluntarily reviewing from an advanced copy that I received. This is the third book in the series and it’s a roller coaster ride and I mean that in a good way. Draft prospect Hunter and his nerdy room mate John. Complete opposites who collide in a way that creates the basis of the story. There aren’t many out players and Hunter struggles to accept any change to his plans. John us set in his ways and just wants to get ahead of his studies but he was secretly crushing on his hunky room mate. Throw in the ups and downs of life this was a great book. Can’t wait for the next book in the series

With Hunter looking forward to his future in football and his father recently coming out as gay, there was a lot of weight on his shoulders. John is your typical nerd, who is fully thrown into his studies, but that doesn't stop him from drooling over his roommate. Despite their highs and lows, when these two finally become cordial with one another, they see so much more than just two sharing the same space.
Hunter and John, were really good together. Their opposite personalities came together in the best way.

I have to be honest. I was not a big fan of Hunter in Linc's book. I thought he was being a whiny baby in the most polite terms. But this book totally rehabbed him. I did like the fact that he started out being a good friend to John before they saw each other romantically. And every time he made a misstep he owned it and made it right. And John is an absolute delight. I love that Hunter gave him the security to grow into who he always was. I did enjoy seeing him starting to repair the separation from his family. This author has created a world with a strong family of blood and choice.

I’m so glad we got this.

After reading Linc and Nix’s story I really wanted Hunter’s. It was good to see his perspective on things. While this one didn’t flow as smoothly to me as theirs did the relationship Hunter and John built together felt genuine. I highly recommend signing up for the newsletter afterwards and getting The Final Cut. I want to know how their first year is going.

This was my favorite book so far in this series. I loved Hunter and John. Book 2 had some inconsistencies though. In Book 2 the author referenced Hunter moving in with Brandon the homophobe. The book ended with Nixon noticing John’s hand on Hunter’s knee and the teaser for Book 3 said Hunter was falling for two of his roommates. I think Brandon was written out of the Book 3. I didn’t like how the book ended before the draft and John meeting Linc and Nixon. Also where is Book 4??

mixed feelings about this one

I have mixed feelings about this book. If I read it as a standalone, it was an amazing book. The characters were well developed and the storyline was colorful. However, if you read it with the rest of the series there are some glaring discrepancies between this book and book 2. Which is a bummer because otherwise this would be an awesome read.

This series has been really good from the very beginning! John & Hunter are super cute together and exactly what each other needs!
Hunters attitude toward his father sort of bugs me at first especially since he made his own discovery but the fact that he owned up to being wrong about how he treated them was good! The ending was so great and I can’t wait for tanner & landrys story! ❤️❤️😀😀

He is about to enter the draft and everyone eyes are on him especially since his dad came out as gay. Now his sexuality is being questioned as he does not have a girlfriend. He has a best friend who he may just be falling for them. Will he win in the draft? Is he really gay like his dad? How would that go? See just how it all goes

Thinking Ahead.

MM, Sports, Queer Awakening, Friends to lovers, Contemporary, Romance. Easy to read page-turner with great characters and a steamy plot. A great third installment in the series, needs to be read in series order as stories follow on and at some points are running along at the same point of time. Great read, thoroughly enjoyed reading their story. Guaranteed HEA.

John and Hunter are definitely my favorite couple from this series. They are completely opposite in every way. But despite their differences they come together perfectly. The final in the trilogy Tackled by Love. And we have the Nerd and the Jock. The Jock comes to this with baggage because of his father. The Nerd is just so sweet but your typical Nerd. The feelings start and the jock actually becomes a JOCK. Over time, we get to watch him grow into himself in a rather terrific way. This is such a good story and a great ending to this wonderful series.
