Amber Clarkson is not looking for a protector, but when volunteer firefighter and children’s book author, Jeremy Scott, diffuses a tense situation with a frazzled customer, and then carries her to safety when her restaurant catches on fire, she can do nothing but be thankful for his help. What she doesn’t expect is his smokin’ hot kisses to burn through the barricades surrounding her heart. But a relationship is not in the cards. He’s much too observant and she can’t have him discovering her secret.
Jeremy is not a hero. He is simply a small-town guy, who finds himself in the right place at the right time. Helping out the delectable Amber, is icing on the cake for him. He’s always been infatuated with her, from afar. When the call comes in that her restaurant is on fire and she lives above it, he’ll move heaven and earth to make sure she’s safe. A few sweet kisses make him hunger for more, but if she finds out he’s nothing but a fraud, he risks losing her forever.
I started writing late in life. I've always been a reader, devouring Nancy Drew books in grade school right on through to today. But writing is new to me and I am having a blast.
I have four series, all small town contemporary romance.
My Lake Chelan series is centered around a remote town in eastern Washington and all the challenges and shenanigans that go on there. Many of the characters in that series are volunteer firefighters. My father was a volunteer firefighter and walking into a station still smells like home to me. So I am having a lot of fun incorporating my memories into new stories.
My Burlap and Barbed Wire series at this point is Colorado Cowboys all from one family of cattle ranchers living in the Rocky Mountains at the base of Rocky Mountain National Park. Writing a family of siblings finding love has been a lot of fun.
My Saddles and Secrets series code named Wyoming Wranglers is focused on a rescue ranch for geriatric horses. Someone is causing problems and the local sheriff dept. is trying to find the culprit.
My Helluva Engineer series is a nod to my alma mater. The mineral engineers journey across the mountains to help find the gold mine that has recently started contaminating the Rockin' K ranch. Why it's started having poisonous runoff after two hundred years of dormancy, is the real question.
All my books are stand alone so you don't have to read them all or even in order, although it might be more fun to do so.
Join with me as I tell my stories, weaving real tidbits from my life in with imaginary ones. You'll have to guess which is which. It will be a hoot!
I liked this book. It's a charming small town romance that offers plenty of sweetness with a touch of heat. Amber and Jeremy were likable and I enjoyed their chemistry. They both have things they are hiding, which puts a serious strain on their emotions and burgeoning relationship. A solid storyline that offers drama, emotional turmoil, steam, romance and a bit of mystery keeps the you entertained. By my own accord I am posting a truthful review.
3* Jeremy has been visiting Amber’s restaurant for years having a sweet tooth & a secret crush. Amber is aware of Jeremy just not sure he’s aware of her? When an incident fetched them together will they work through the secrets & insecurities? I voluntarily reviewed an advanced reader copy of this book.
This is the third book in this series from this talented author, and is Amber and Jeremy’s story. Amber is a popular restaurant owner, and when the call comes in that it is on fire, volunteer fire-fighter Jeremy is determined to save her. This is a well written sweet romance which had secrets, suspense, drama, and love. I look forward to reading the next book in this fascinating series.
I loved the heart in this book. Jeremy had been coming to Amber Clarkson restaurant for years just to see her but he wasn't confident enough to tell her. When Ambers restaurant catches fire, Jeremy is there to save her, but in the end, they save one another. I'm so thrilled that this book gives a shout out to Vets and some of their problems, kudos to Shirley Penick
This story was a cute read, can't wait to read more books in this series, loved where the setting for this book takes place plus I love reading about hunky firefighters too!
What can I say? The setting of Lake Chelan is so nice. The characters, including Jeremy and Amber were all excellent. The plots and sub-plots were - well, I didn,t want to put this book down.
I haven’t read a good solid romance in a long while. Shirley Penick’s novel, Smokin’, did not disappoint. In the interest of full disclosure, I received an electronic copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
Amber and Jeremy’s road to love is paved with pitfalls and good intentions. The beginning of their love affair doesn’t start from the usual locales of bars or online dating. Amber Clarkson’s restaurant catches fire and Jeremy Scott catches her heart. He saves her from certain death.
But, there’s more to Jeremy than meets the eye. Beyond his volunteer firefighter persona is a children’s author. Despite his affections, Amber just can’t let him get to close. She doesn’t want to get burned—or him discovering her secret.
Amber isn’t the only one with secrets. Jeremy has long since loved her from afar, but when they two finally get together, it is HOT! Readers of contemporary romances or those who just enjoy a solid story of missteps, good intentions, and realistic love stories, look no further than Smokin’.
