Charm City Chronicles #1

The Demon's in the Details

Rate this book
Can a sexy demon really spin straw into gold?

Poe Dupin, raven shifter and thief extraordinaire, is in trouble with a capital ‘T.’ Not only did he get his wing caught in the cookie jar during his latest heist, but his loser stepdad, the alpha, seems determined to run their roost into the ground. And Baltimore is many things, but forgiving is not on the list.

When his stepdad puts the roost in peril, Poe sees no choice but to bargain with Charm City’s only demon, Tommy Tittoti. Rumors are that Tommy eats the souls of those foolish enough to try. Three strikes and you’re out. But really, Poe wasn’t using his soul anyway. And if it saves his roost? Worth it.

Tommy isn’t what Poe expects. Demon—huge, horned, hairy, and scary, right? Nope. Blond, gorgeous, with a bubble butt, and a lilting drawl that beckons Poe to come play. Total hookup-app fantasy material. Even if he is a murder twink.

Poe’s no angel, but Tommy . . . well he’s more devil than demon. Yet, Poe just can’t seem to keep his feathers out of the fire. As one bargain turns into two, and then a third tragedy strikes the ravens, Poe finds himself falling for a guy who may very literally be the death of him. Or maybe the flames will burn them both.

The Demon’s in the Details is a fast-paced, roller coaster of a romance with a guaranteed HEA and lots of steam. Shenanigans include: a gold object that is definitely not a ring, a best friend who’s trigger-happy, and a demon who’s got a few surprises up his, uh, sleeve.

MEGHAN MASLOW is truly a rare breed. No, not a unicorn (although that would be sooo cool). She’s a—gasp!—extroverted writer.

She believes that life is meant to be lived. Preferably with lots of people around. Every day is an adventure, or should be. She’s spent a large portion of her life working and living in various countries in Africa. She’s multitalented, having perfected the art of eavesdropping in bars around the world while chugging local brews, and gabbing with anyone who isn’t quick enough to elude her grasp. She believes kindness is contagious, and learning to laugh at yourself is one of life’s greatest gifts (and challenges). She advocates for social justice, believes storytelling can be transformative, and surprisingly isn’t a misanthrope. She loves travel, reading, world music, Moscow Mules, awkward dancing, dreadlocks, her family, and um… writing.

Originally part of the Fables Retold: An MM Urban Fantasy Anthology, this was a fab entry!

As per the blurb, raven Poe is in a bit of a pickle. His stepdad Ethan, who’s also his alpha, is the worst of the worst, always putting himself first instead of the roost and consorting with slimey evil snake overlord Briggs, digging his debt deeper and deeper. Poor Poe, committed to his half siblings and the community, is forever the one who must risk and sacrifice much to get Ethan out of his latest scrape. When Ethan goes too far, Poe has no choice but to strike a bargain with the tantalizing Tommy, a demon who looks anything but and has far greater powers and schemes than imagined.

As with all demons and the bargains they strike, it is the little details inserted or missed that more often than not is what gets a poor desperate soul in trouble. Thankfully, Tommy has a bit of a crush on Poe and has no problem helping the beleaguered raven who only wants what's best for those under his care.

In classic Maslow style, this had thorough world building, plenty of twists and turns, and some crazy violence and deserved harsh justice, all delivered via stellar writing that also includes some stellar explicit.

Narrated by Boudreaux (aka the venerable Greg Tremblay), need I say more? Nope!

Overall, an enticing, sexy paranormal urban fantasy where further stories of the various denizens (a menagerie of shifters, mages, fairies, and vamps) that Maslow has introduced in this unique AU, would no doubt be eagerly and easily embraced should she decide to expand on these other characters! For now though, go forth and enjoy this fun novella!!

Thank you to the author for the audio in exchange for an honest review

This was fun with a capital F!
I really enjoy this author’s humour. Dry, sarcastic and with a hint of ‘don’t take this too seriously’.

Clearly, Meghan Maslow loves writing a-typical demons – I adored the one in Starfig Investigations (he is one of the most lovable ones out there! 😂), and Tommy is written in a similar vein.
So bury your ideas of the big, bad, disgusting demon, and meet this twinky, gorgeous, very sympathetic, murderous blonde who’s able to turn people into ash with the snap of a finger.

I also really liked Poe, whose POV we are in for all of the book. His snarky, sarcy comments made me grin, and I totally rooted for him all the way.

Yes, the bad people here are very bad, the good people are very good, and the tale in itself is simplistic, but isn’t that exactly what a fairy tale is all about?

Maybe I would have liked a little bit more depth when it comes to the relationship issues between Poe and Tommy, which offered a huge scope of angst, but, as I said, that’s probably not the point here.

If you like fantasy and fairytales, where good triumphs over evil, this should tickle your fancy! 😉 I was thoroughly entertained.

I really enjoyed this! Tommy Tittoti has to be the softest demon I’ve ever read. At least where raven-shifter Poe is concerned. Well, that is until Poe or anyone else he considered his was threatened. Then he was allllll demon and I was all for it. 🖤

I loved Poe Dupin too. Though he doesn’t think he amounts to much *unless rating his skills as a thief*, Poe was pure knight in shining black feathers. He gave up everything to take care of his roost. When he gave up the thing he prized the most to Tommy in a bargain, it ends up being the best thing he ever did.

Honestly, plot-wise there wasn’t a lot new here. But Meghan Maslow’s excellent story-telling and phenomenal characterizations made reading this a pure pleasure! 🥰

The story had sooo much potential but the sex ruined it. 😵😵

I enjoy sex scenes but I don't like when they are used almost in every chapter, hypocritical of me I know, but that's how I roll 😎😎😎.

In here, once they started the horizontal tango it happened A LOT! And sometimes when it didn't make sense and others times when they needed to talk, instead of talking, they just went at it, so obviously the development of the characters wasn't there.

So no, I'm not very impressed with that, but I can't say I didn't enjoy this because I really, really did. This was fun, witty, quirky, had a lot of types of creatures and fun situations going on. The main characters were lovely and I loved that they weren't what they seemed on the outside.

If I just had a little less sex and a little more development and feelings, it would have been perfect!!! But I still recommend this. 🤭🤭🤭🤭

Reread #2: Same Rating February 2023

Had to reread this book since book two (Cat's Chance in Hell) just came out on audio narrated by the one and the only Greg B!!!

I still enjoyed this book as much as I did the first time. It hooked me from the start and it was hard to put down.

Reread #1: Same rating October 2021

I think that this would have benefitted with Tommy's POV, but honestly this book was cute and a lot happened for it to be less than 250 pages.

I hope that there are follow up books because there are some secondary characters that really could use their own book *cough* Ollie *cough* or *cough* Carter *cough* haha but overall Greg Boudreaux amazing as always!

3.5-4 stars: August 2021

A lot happened in a short book! I enjoyed it all and the audiobook was amazing!

Recommend this if you’re in a mood for a short action packed book!

I always want to love Meghan Maslow's particular brand of dark paranormal books, but they never seem to work for me. I gave this one the old college try, and I listened in audio (I usually adore Greg Boudreaux), but I DNFed at about 83% in.

I think I always want more out of Meghan's world-building. I don't know if there was another book in this world previously that I missed, but I just was sort of confused and not really into the universe where this book took place. It felt... incomplete. I also think that the way this author paces her sex scenes and how often they take place in the book didn't quite work for me. When I'm reading an urban fantasy or paranormal romance, it's more about the plot and excitement for me than anything else, and I think that's just my personal preference.

I'm in the minority with this one, and I don't want to rain on this author's parade, but I just wanted more from this story.

The Demon's in the Details is a fun paranormal romance between a raven-shifter and the demon he makes a deal with. Poe and Tommy's relationship was nice and they have good chemistry, but I wish there was a bit more build up with their development.

It's a urban fantasy world set in Baltimore with a hodgepodge of different supernatural creatures. I hope we get more of the different groups that control Baltimore and more political scheming in future books.

While the plot wasn't the strongest, as it had pretty convienient solutions that prevented it from feeling high-stakes, it was still entertaining.

Murder twinks need love too

I adored this. Neither MC was exactly pure and innocent, but they were perfect for each other (and both of them were nicer than they first appeared). I loved how Poe couldn’t keep his mouth shut and was always ready with some snarky comeback. I’m thrilled with how things ended for them, but now I need more from this world! There are plenty of side characters just begging for stories, and I hope they get them!

Highly enjoyable mm/uf book with an excellent narrator, Greg Boudreaux

Poe Dupin, owner of "Spun Gold", master thief extraordinaire, is a raven shifter who needs to bail out his step father/alpha more often than not. At one point he draws the attention of one of the five Rogers of Central Baltimore, a very shady basilisc shifter. This time, Poe needs more help, and he sees no other option than to strike a deal with the local demon.

Said demon is called Tommy Tittoti, owner of a barber shop called "Rumpled Still: Skin, Hair and Scalp."

And come on, before I continue with this review, let's all take a moment to appreciate the names here (yes, the demon IS in the details).

So yes, Poe strikes a deal with Tommy. And another one. And we all know how things like these go, so the plot is not really surprising. What I appreciated - the details, the relatively new and original world building, and all the details hidden like little gems throughout the story. And that final mating sex scene, holy shit!

And ofc Greg Bourdeaux. Definitely a narrator I need to keep an eye on, I loooooved esp his Tommy-voice with his honeyed Southern drawl.

All in all - slightly predictable plot, but highly enjoyable execution - definitely a recommendation for all looking for some easy fun. And I really hope for more books, maybe Ollie and the Griffin shifter next? Or the Bengal cat shifter and Carter, the twinky cat shifter.

I really enjoyed this and I didn't realize it was a loose retelling of Rumpelstiltskin until later in the book. The MC's were raven shifter and a demon who was also a twink. There was really good world building, a interesting plot and two great MC's. I liked that that the characters grew and although I would have liked Tommy's POV it wasn't deal breaker. I'll definitely read more in this series.

Oh, wow. Where can I start?

I enjoyed this book in audio format and Greg Boudreaux was amazing as always in bringing the characters to life. I especially loved the Southern drawl he gave to Tommy, which works so well with him calling Poe "Sugar".

Meghan Maslow always infuses her work with action, suspense, a healthy dose of romance, and humor. Murder-twink anyone? Why Poe is convinced he can't be the roost's alpha is beyond everyone but him, as he's already doing the job, and doing it as well as he possibly can. Both characters' personalities are nuanced, with wonderful development.

I loved that the hurt/comfort went both ways. Tommy, though old and powerful, wasn't infallible, and Poe, though scruffy and "from the wrong side of Baltimore" has more class than he lets on. We got to see them each take care of the other, and you can truly understand their bond.

Some of the scenes were so good that I had to replay them a few times, such as the showdown scene.

This author is an auto-buy for me, and I have loved every one of her works. I can hardly wait for Ollie's story!

Highly recommended.

Raven shifter Poe Dupin's stepdad alpha Evan puts their entire roost in danger because of a huge gambling debt totaling $80,000. Even as a premier thief, Poe knows he is unable to raise that amount of money. When his friend suggests he approached the demon Tommy Tittoti with the problem, Poe feels he has no choice. His much younger half-siblings and the other members of the roost are depending on him. And it isn't the first time he's saved them from his stepfather's selfish choices, incompetence, and irresponsibility. Challenging him as the roost's alpha won't work either as the alpha's power is a synergistic combination of the power of ALL ravens in the roost.
Poe visits Tommy at his place of business, a barbershop where he is known to administer more than a shave and a haircut. Expect to encounter an enormous monstrosity, Poe finds a gorgeous, blonde, and small-statured twinky demon! Just the kind of man Poe may not find too hard to work with after all. But it is a demon's nature to bargain for any requests made of them and Tommy is no different. However, he never expects to do business with a person like Poe who is so giving, protective, selfless--and handsome!
Writer Meghan Maslow gives readers a special treat with her awesome retelling of the fairy tale Rumplestiltskin. Setting it in Baltimore, the home of Edgar Allan Poe who famous poem is titled "The Raven", the author builds an incredible world filled with shifters and other supernatural beings--each with their own particular gifts and abilities. The city forms the backdrop for turf wars and battles between paranormal factions that allow for extensive development of the main characters both in the relationship between themselves and amongst the other players in the story. The writer is especially imaginative in designing a demon who, in spite of his basic nature, was able to win the readers' hearts. The challenges and conflicts for the protagonists are also well imagined. The resolutions and conclusions are absolutely brilliant. This writer continues to amaze me with her stories and I am wanting for more of just anything she writes!
As a native of Baltimore City Maryland, this story is near and dear to my heart for so many reasons. The world Meghan Maslow creates from Baltimore is awesome, especially for those readers like me who are familiar (and in love) with its neighborhoods, landmarks, and history. The Bromoseltzer Tower! Yes, there's a fire department right there. And Fort McHenry? A school trip was scheduled there every year of elementary and middle school! Yes, Francis Scott Key penned the American national anthem "The Star-Spangled Banner" as he observed the British bombardment of Fort McHenry in 1814 during the War of 1812. He was inspired upon seeing the American flag still flying over the fort at dawn. And Key's Highway? It's named in honor of Francis Scott and passes the Domino Sugar plant where my father worked until he died in 1999. Here's hoping this tale becomes book one of a series or, at the very least, a trilogy.

Absolutely adored everything about this urban fantasy

Rumpleskiltskin is one of my favourite fairy tales, so this modern urban fantasy reimagining of the story ticked every one of my boxes.

My only complaint, and it's born from selfishness really, is that it was over too soon!

I fell for Poe from the off, pretty much the same as Tommy does, and I grew to admire him more as the story unfolded.

As with her other books, Meghan creates a beautifully strong sense of place, which helps to anchor the story and allows the reader to get a very clear visual of the setting and what's going on.

I loved the plot, I loved the twists which took from the original folklore and brought the narrative into Baltimore and tied in Edgar Allen Poe's history with that area.

With a great bunch of secondary characters and a clear indication that there will be more to come, this was a brilliant opener for the Charm City Chronicles.

What a fun romp! Some minor editorial issues in the last few chapters but nothing that detracted from the story. I’ll never forget Poe, early on, thinking of Tommy as a “murder twink”! Meghan Maslow rarely disappoints.

A Joyfully Jay review.

4.5 stars

This book is a retelling of a fairytale we don’t often see, and it’s done in a marvelous way. I’m not going to explicitly state which one, since discovering it is part of the fun. Maslow takes this tale and gives it new life here, weaving a story that is fast paced, clever, and witty, and does the original justice. I will say here that the is republished from the Fables Retold anthology, and the author states that no new content has been added.

The chemistry between the MCs is fantastic, from the moment they first meet, and continues to build throughout every interaction. Maslow seamlessly weaves their budding and building romance with the rest of the plot. Though this story is told solely through Poe’s first person POV, we get views of Tommy’s motivations and feelings throughout. It takes time to understand why Tommy is doing certain things, and even longer for Poe to see it. Poe’s best friend has to spell things out for him, and I have to say it was needed.

This just wasn't working for me, I couldn't get invested in the characters or story.

I had some trouble understanding the worldbuilding that led to the plot set up - can't challenge for alpha status (bird alpha lol) but assassination is looked down on (or something? even though wolves can challenge which is kind of the same thing?) so they're just stuck with a shitty alpha who runs everything into the ground and can't do anything? Weird.

Given my lack of emotional investment in Poe, I didn't understand his concern for the step-siblings with regards to how he behaved. Surely they'd be better off if he took out the alpha too? Why didn't he do anything...??? I don't know. Lots of ??? for me.

Basically, I don't understand the motivations of this character, and he seems kind of ....helpless instead of struggling with a problem. The demon is just sort of...there.

Narration - A; Content- B+ Read for the Feb 2022 TBR Challenge prompt - "fairytale".

I always have trouble finding a book to fill the “fairytale” prompt because fairytale retellings aren’t things I’m particularly drawn to and I don’t have many of them.  In fact, I was on the point of giving up on finding one for this month’s prompt when I was scrolling through my Audible library and my eye was caught by a subtitle – “an m/m paranormal fairytale”, and I thought, “that’ll do!”  The fact that the audiobook is narrated by one of my all-time favourite narrators was a big plus.

The Demon’s in the Details is a riff on Rumpelstiltskin that hits the basic beats of the original without being an exact reproduction of it, transforming the passive main character into a brave, fiercely protective individual who can look out for himself, the king – who is, let’s face it, a pretty nasty piece of work – into a kind of mob boss, and the titular character from the villain of the story into… well, not the villain ;) It’s a thoroughly entertaining story that moves at a fairly swift pace without feeling rushed, the leads are well-drawn and easy to root for and the narration by Greg Boudreaux is flawless.

Raven shifter and jewel thief Poe Dupin is planning on putting the proceeds from his latest heist towards paying salaries and running costs of his roost, but his dickhead of a stepfather Ethan – who is the roost’s alpha – tells him he needs the money to pay part of the eight hundred grand gambling debt he now owes to casino owner, basilisk shifter and all-round sleazebag Biggs Bickley.  As if it’s not bad enough that Bickley is already milking the roost for protection money.  The only way the roost can manage to keep its head above water most times is because of Poe’s side-gig of finding (both legally and illegally) rare gems for the customers of his shop, Spun Gold Jewelers.  This isn’t the first time Ethan has selfishly endangered the roost, but Poe very much fears it might be the last. How on earth is he going to raise that kind of money?

At the suggestion of his best friend. Poe reluctantly decides to approach demon Tommy Tittoti for help.  Tommy is dangerous, powerful and mysterious – nobody really knows for sure what he is and where he comes from - but Poe is caught between a rock and a hard place, and heads to Tommy’s place, a barbershop of all things – Rumpled Still: Skin, Hair, and Scalp ready to make a bargain for the money to pay the debt and save the roost.

Tommy turns out to be not at all what Poe had expected.  Instead of some hulking, disgusting brute, Tommy is a gorgeous twinky blond (Poe labels him a “murder twink” – which made me smile every time!) and Poe can’t take his eyes off him.  Tommy proposes a bargain (while giving Poe the cleanest (sexiest) shave he’s ever had) – surprising Poe by asking for a price he can easily pay.  Poe can’t believe he’s getting off that lightly, but also isn’t about to look a gift demon in the mouth, and the bargain is struck.

While the story is familiar and there’s not a lot new here – of course, the bad guys are very bad, and the good guys are very good - the excellent storytelling, world-building and characterisations elevate the tale beyond the ordinary and make for a super fun fantasy romp.  The various conflicts and challenges Poe and Tommy face are well thought-out, and there’s a lively secondary cast of supernatural beings (Carter the cat shifter is a total scene stealer) with different gifts and abilities.  Poe is an all-round decent guy trying to do the right thing in difficult circumstances, to look after his younger step-siblings and take care of everyone in the roost, even though it’s not technically his responsibility as he’s not the alpha.  I liked his snarky inner voice, and he’s got attitude by the bucket-load; he doesn’t think he’s anything special, but proves over and over that he is, especially in his willingness to give away the very thing he prizes the most in order to save the roost.  Tommy is an intriguing mixture of smooth, sexy and dangerous that fascinates Poe right from the start, and their chemistry is combustible.  Even though Poe is the sole PoV character, the author skilfully shows us Tommy’s motivations and feelings, and how he struggles to balance his own wants and needs with the demands of his demonic nature.  For a demon/assassin/vigilante he’s surprisingly endearing!

Greg Boudreaux is one of the best romance audiobook narrators around and he delivers a superb, well-paced performance that perfectly captures all the fun, mischief and heartache of this story.  All the characters are voiced in ways that reflect their personalities – such as the slight hiss on the sibilants in Bickley’s dialogue - and are clearly differentiated so that there’s never any problem working out who is speaking.  The two leads are really well depicted; Poe’s snappy snark is expertly timed and his hidden vulnerabilities are beautifully conveyed, and Tommy’s slight southern drawl drips with honey and sex and sarcasm, and works really well to fool people into thinking he’s the non-threatening twink he presents himself as.  As always, Mr. Boudreaux hits all the right emotional notes, and he brings the connection between Poe and Tommy vividly to life.

I had a few small niggles (I’m not a fan of stories where a third party has to tell person A how person B really feels about them), but overall The Demon’s in the Details is a fresh, fun take on a well-known story and I really enjoyed it.

"We can't control the pain that others cause, we can only try to minimize the damage we ourselves do."

I really liked this. Liked the main characters, their banter, their chemistry, that they didn't roll over for anything... I even liked some of the side characters. The world that Maslow builds here is very interesting as well, and the information we get about the different types of shifters (and demons!) and how they're different. It was also a great touch between the ravens and the crows.

I didn't know that the twins would have such a huge role to play - I thought I remembered something about them being mentioned before I started this, but then didn't see it in the summary so unsure. It makes sense but I generally don't like children in my books. Maslow did it well here. They weren't overwhelming. They were in the story when needed and didn't take center stage, even when they were in the scene or an important part of it. I truly appreciated that. They acted a little older than their nine years, however, it was completely understandable with their POS "father." Children tend to grow quicker in those circumstances.

There were also some super-hot scenes. Especially the last sex scene! And the care that was given after... Love.

The way that things ended with Ethan... *chef's kiss* Thank you, Kennedy. I appreciate what Poe was doing and it was very much in-character, but she definitely had the right idea and great reasons behind it. And Ethan more than deserved it. The scene when the twins couldn't "join the roost" and then later when they were more relieved about Ethan... Ouch. Made my heart glad the way these worked out.

Really enjoyed the different aspects of Poe and fairy-tale bits throughout!

This was completely what I was in the mood for and am glad I ended up finally picking this up. Not the first I've read from Maslow and won't be the last! In fact, I'll definitely be reading the next. I'm sad it isn't featuring Poe and Tommy but they're wrapped up very well here.

"Uh, what about Ethan?" I asked.
"He won't be joining us," Kennedy grinned.

😍😍😍😍😍

4.5 There is a wonderful irreverence to the conversations and dialogue. Excellent writing, very detailed and descriptive, the snarky thoughts and observations were the best part. Author took the time to build a great world, Baltimore sometime in the future, with the 1980s being “a long time ago”. Book 1 in a series, book 2 already out with lots of possible characters to build from. About 50% relationship focused and 50% political shenanigans and intrigue, stayed fresh and interesting the whole way through.

Paranormal, urban fantasy vibe, bird/raven shifter, demon, rich/poor.
