Pickford, Lloyd, Keaton, Garbo. You’re familiar with these icons of silent film, of course — and they are here within these pages. But are you familiar with Francelia Billington? No? How about Harold Lockwood, Edna Flugrath, Marion Byron, Virginia Brown Faire? Still, no? Well, fear not. Film historian and author Tim Lussier (“Bare Knees” The Life and Films of Virginia LeeCorbin) shines a belated spotlight on these unjustly forgotten men and women, each of whom brought untold joy to millions of fans in the years before movies learned to talk. When you read their stories in Silent Vignettes, you’ll understand why.
If you're a silent movie fan who is tired of reading about the same old-same old and wants to hear a little bit about the unsung players of the era, this book is for you. The format is light, brief, but engaging, an introductory course into level two or three of silent film fandom. He doesn't assume the reader knows the ins and outs of the era and offers many film recommendations for readers to seek out, and since many silent films fall into the public domain, a lot of these titles are available on Youtube, in varying degrees of quality (watcher beware). It is clear Lussier is passionate about these films and the people who made them.
Author Tim Lussier signed copies of his book at the Columbus Moving Picture Show in May 2022.
