The Mountain Man’s Mail-Order Surprise

Rate this book
Garrett Harding (Waabshkizi Mnidoo - Chippewa name meaning white spirit), was orphaned then found and raised by the Chippewa, whose camp is near Red Lake. His connections to the tribe and his birth heritage meant he was perfectly suited to move between the white towns and the tribe to trade. However, his confusion as to whether he is a white man as he was born, or Native American as he was raised means he never feels connected to either community. So, he lives alone, between the Indian settlement and the small town of Iron Creek and only goes to either one for supplies/to trade/or the saloon to gamble. But he’s lonely and so he advertises for a bride.
Katy Jones is young and alone in Mississippi. Her family have disowned her because she fell in love with the wrong man, married him and followed him from her home in Richmond, Virginia, as he had found work in New Orleans. He died in the 1878 Yellow Fever epidemic. Somehow, she managed to survive unscathed.
She is desperate with nowhere to flee in order to get away from the epidemic. She writes to a number of men, and Garrett is the only one who writes back to her before her fear of the disease forces her to flee.
Will Garrett and Katy form a destiny together? Or will a secret she is keeping jeopardixze their future together?

A sweet clean mail order bride novel

I was in quite a bit of pain today and needed something to distract me from it. This book was just the ticket. I really felt that I got to know the lead character Katy and Garrett and understand who they really were. There was drama in their story but nothing that seemed overly contrived. I loved how the author mixed two cultures and showed great respect for the Anishanaabe nation and Ojibwe people who had taken Garrett in as a young five year old and accepted him as one of their own. I enjoyed the book so much that I immediately bought the next book in the series.

a tough journey in tough times

An interesting journey towards a new life, but secrets might derail an almost perfect relationship. A good look into the lives of those people that straddle two worlds.

I truely enjoyed this historical romance novel. A young woman goes against her parents wishes and marries Jacob. They go down to live in New Orleans. But then there is an outbreak of yellowfever. Katy loses her husband to the fever. She cannot go back to her parents, so she has to plan a way to live. She advertises a Mail Order Bride. The man who answers the ad is named Garrett, and they send letters back and forth to one another. He sends her a train ticket to his town in Minnesota. When she arrives, she is very ill. Garret takes Katy to the people he grew up with, a native people of the area. Katy learns so much from his foster family. This is a very heart warming story.

I love reading historical novels and this one was hard for me to put down. Just wanted to keep reading and reading. I look forward to reading Karla Gracey's other novels.

Great Read

A great story of tragedy, love, forgiveness and redemption in two different human worlds. Garrett’s parents died in an accident when he was four and a wonderful Indian lady took him and raised him like her own. Katy Jones fell in love at seventeen and married against her parents wishes. Katy’s husband died of yellow fever and left her with child. Garrett gambled and drank while leaving his Indian bride alone for a year and she fell to
in love with his best friend & bore a baby by the friend. Both wife and child died. Garrett put a request for a mail-order bride and Katy answered and moved to Minnesota to be with him...yet she didn’t tell him she was expecting her husband’s baby. Both kept secrets but bit found live and forgiveness. A must read. Very exciting book.

ouph this was hard. I hate leaving low reviews. I did finish the book, though it was a massive struggle.
This book read like a plot outline:
She left home
she moved somewhere else
life was nice
then life was not nice
then this happened
then she went there

Not my style. And their was little substance in each item of the 'list'
Now I get that for whatever reason I purchased a 'clean romance' which wtf anyway but this was sappier than the hallmark channel. I can read all sorts but when EVERYTHING turns out 'oh so perfect' I just dont buy it. I mean who builds a house for a stranger- honestly- wtf- that doesn't and has never happened. And I'm not saying this as a pesimistic negative person- I'm sunnier than summer in Australia.
I have read that you shouldn't put yourself into a plot and critique it with 'yeah but I would never'. So I'm trying not to do that, however, in this the FMC is clearly going 'oh I should say X" but then doesnt and then bam the consequences of her own actions bite her in the butt. I have more of an issue with the fact that in HER internal dialogue she is critical of her actions.....but doesnt change them. And then our MMC is just not great. He spouts all the I'm here for you, just want to help you. But then he is self sabotaging, and frankly self absorbed. I just did not like this. perhaps the cowboy/ western romance I want is not to be found in these odd AI cover 'clean' romances that are clearly written for a different target market to me. I want a book with substance, genuine problems to overcome, that are then managed well, I am happy to have characters with flaws and prickly bits but it needs to be rooted in reality.

So this is very much a case of poor book choice for me, coupled with very average writing
hard pass on any more in the series

The Mountain Man's Mail-Order Surprise is the first book in the Iron Creek Brides Series by Karla Gracey. This is an historical, western romance series with lonely bachelors, mail-order brides, adventure, challenges, sweet scenes, heartwarming moments, drama, and angst.
Each book contains its own ‘romance’, following its own couple as they find their HEA. A mountain man, a blacksmith, a sheriff, and a stagecoach driver all have their own mail-order-bride adventures. And as the stories play out, we get to witness life in the ‘old west’.
I did find it hard to fully connect with the characters and their stories because the characters inner dialogue/thoughts were quite frustrating at times, and then the stories lagged and dragged in parts making for more frustration. There was also a lot of repetitive information which kept pulling me out of the story in frustration. And while the stories have sweet and heartwarming moments, they are entirely predictable.
But if you love Historical Western Romance, and don’t mind a little predictability, then this is definitely the series for you.
Happy Reading…

Thank you, Karla Gracey!

Sweet, realistic story with original, likeable characters

I enjoyed getting to know the characters as the story unfolded. Our heroine, Mrs. Katy White, is both practical and good-hearted. She makes friends with every lady she rents a room from, with Garret through their letters, and with Garrett's mother, grandfather and the Ojibwe tribe through her extended stay with them. And of course, the couple she works for.

The four main characters are well-developed: Katy, Garret, and his mother. They each had challenges they had a hard time living with and/or resolving. (I would love to know his mother in real life!)

Katy and Garrett communicated well by letter and in person. Their hesitation to open up completely to each other was realistic. As well as how they each came to see the wider picture, which brought them insights, and thus, changes in what they told each other and how they took personal responsibility for their treatment of each other.

Beautiful, uplifting story.

Garrett and Katy

This is an extremely well written mail order bride tale, written by Karla Gracey. She has also done an exceptional job with the plot and the characters. Katy married her best friend and love,Jacob without her Mam and Pa’s permission and they disowned her. She looses Jacob to yellow fever and she in desperation answers a mail order bride advertisement. Garret’s parents died on their way to homestead leaving their young son alone in their covered wagon. He is discovered by a young Indian woman and she takes him to be her son. Garrett has never believed himself accepted by either his Indian family or the white people, leaving him to be walking on the edge of both their worlds. By the time Katy arrives to meet Garrett she discovers she is pregnant with Jacob’s child and fear causes her to tell no one. You will enjoy discovering how Garrett and Katy find their way to happily ever after.

Love list and found

Katy left her family to marry Jacob, who they thought was a loser. They were married until he died of yellowvfever.n Katy was so lost and scared. Everyone was dying from yellow fever. She saw can ad in the paper for a mail order bride. Garrett was raised by the Ojibwa when they found him as a five-year old. His parents had died in a wagon accident. He never felt like he belonged anywhere. Born white, raised Indian. He was so surprised when he received a reply to his ad. Katy and Garrett corresponded as she traveler from New Orleans to Chicago and finally to Minnesota. When she arrived she became very been sick. That's how Garrett first saw her. He wss so concerned about her health that he took her to his mother's tribe. Katy had a secret she was keeping b from him and didn't know how how to tell him. Did he find out the secret? Did they marry or did she go back to Chicago? A very nice story.

Interesting Story!
Karla Gracey is a new author to me but I see she has many books under her name.
I enjoyed the story itself very much but there was something which troubled me personally and this was the very unusual and unfamiliar Indian names (to me). These tended to distract me from the story itself as I kept trying to pronounce them.
The characters are endearing and I loved their individual stories, their struggle to change their lives for the better and I found that the way they worked at getting to know each other was interesting.
What I did love the most was the family knit of the tribe and its members which showed strength and wisdom.
I read an Advance Reader Copy (ARC) of the book and this is my voluntary review of it.

Katy's beloved husband is now dead, and she is pregnant. They had gotten married against her parent's wishes, and now Katy felt totally alone. Garrett was only 4 years old when he was traveling with his parents, and there was a coach accident, leaving his folks dead. An Indian woman had been hunting, and saw the wreck. She found the boy, and checked for the parents, but they were both dead. She hunted inside the coach for paperwork, hoping to find out who the boy was, maybe find relatives. The Indian tribe took him in, and adopted him. Years later, now he is full grown, but doesn't feel like he fits into either white nor Indian world. He had been married to an Indian girl, but she also had since died. This is a very good book, full of action and emotion.

Surprise? What an understatement!

This book is a sweet story of a woman who became a mail border bride after the death of her husband to yellow fever. She wanted to get out of the area infested with yellow fever and go to an area where she could give birth to her baby and raise it in a healthy environment. She wanted to provide a home and parent for the baby when it was born. She omitted the fact that she was pregnant in her letters. Imagine the surprise her mail order groom experienced when they met.

Read this book to learn the couple's resolution of the problem. Could they raise the baby together? Read the book to find out!

Loved it!

This was the first book by this author that I've read. I love mail-order bride stories, and this one was a bit different, which I liked - no cookie-cutter plot here. Not only does the book begin well before the 'mail-order' begins, which gives the reader insight into the characters, but it also includes an Indian tribe as an integral part of the story. The characters were very well-developed and the plot well-written. The meshing of Indian culture with the "white man's world" was very seemless and added much to the story. I have just purchased book 2 in this series because I really enjoyed the author's writing.

this is the first book in a new series. It moved slowly as it set up the characters & location for the ongoing series. In that sense, it was a good start for future books.

the characters were likable and had chemistry. It told the story of the developing romance b/w Katy & Garrett. it was short & sweet.

I liked the way the writer included interesting historical details throughout the narrative such as the outbreak of yellow fever in the South, making the trek west, and details of emerging large cities such as Minneapolis & St. Louis.

Katy’s husband dies of yellow fever before Katy even knew that she was pregnant. Now what should she do? She decided to move away from the fever. She was reading the paper and seeing all the ads for brides she decided to write. She wrote ten letters and got one answer. She just kept moving north waiting for an answer. Garrett had written to her on the advice of his adoptive mother. When they finally met she was sick and he took her to his adoptive parents who are Ojibwe. She hadn’t told him she was pregnant. He hadn’t noticed. It caused a rift.

This one made tears run down my cheeks on occasion. Two people--from different walks of life--end up-thankfully happily ever after.

Katy's husband died and she was left pregnant with his child. She answered an advertisement for a bride to get away from the plague ridden city. She made a connection and went to meet him. Garrett is a loner, brought up in two worlds-but never feeling he truly belonged anywhere.

Katy never told Garrett she was pregnant--and really could not find the right time to tell him--When she finally did--well--

Read this heart warming novel to find out!!

Great clean story.

The man is torn between his two lives. Garrett is a orphan white boy raised by the Chippewa Indians in Iron Creek, MN area. His adult life is falling apart not knowing where he belongs. Kate is abandoned by her parents because of her choice of a husband. Then she finds herself a pregnant widow with Yellow Fever ravaging the South and no where to turn. A wonderful story of perseverance and healing in the long journey they both must travel for peace and security, one is distance and one is mental.

The Mountain Man's Mail-Order Surprise from Karla Gracey is a well-written clean mail order bride romance. It's about a man raised as an orphan among the Indians and a pregnant widow who responds to His ad for a mail order bride. Although they both have the necessary baggage and it is not an easy road, these two brave people fought together. Way through this to each other. A very nice book to read, with beautiful characters.

The Mountain Man’s Mail order Bride

This was a great story.Garrett was an Irish man, found when he was only five years old by an Indian lady. Both parents were dead and she took him home with her to raise him. He was lonely and his Indian mother suggested he try the mail order brides in the paper. He started writing to Katy’s and the rest is the most important part of the story. Enjoy their journey.

This was my first experience with Karla Gracey's work and I enjoyed it. One of my favorite tropes is the mail order trope, and this story delivered with a great tale about a woman with a secret and a man who feels alone. I listened to this audiobook in one sitting and I am interested in acquiring more of the author's work. Gina Dobbs' narration was great and added to the story's entertainment. I requested this audiobook from Audiobooks Unleashed and I have voluntarily left this review.

"Family" becomes a strong bond that survives love and tragic events.

A country torn apart by unceasing illness turns peoples lives upside down. There are those who will not survive and others who run to save their's. Two lives come together that may never have known each other. Differences of cultures strain some relationships and bring others together. Both seek only to love each other.

Love a good western love story.

I loved this book. There is so much happening. Mail order bride with long overland travel, life wasn't easy for women at that time. Katy is a strong woman who needed to make hard choices for her and her baby. Both her and Garrett had to steel themselves to their past to become the strong characters that they are. Can't wait to see what happens next.Enjoy!

Very, very, well done. I loved it. There is so much feelings in this story. The heartache of loss, from Kathy's parents, and her husband's passing. Kathy had a lot to worry about also. So much happened but it was a excellent story. I received a complimentary review copy of the book and I am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

Wonderful to read

My Mother was not nice to me. She always said my younger brother was the best one. Add too more siblings and I was always the baby sitter. Never did I have a life of my own. Then I left to go to Texas and work. I eventually came back home and Mom was just not loving. I left and never went back to see her.

This was a rollercoaster ride read. This is one of the few books that goes deeper into the Midwestern type Indian's lifestyle without obsessing over it. A man living away from people up a mountain, does not make him a mountain man. He is fifty years in the future to be one. I didn't really like this book, but would like to check out some others by this author.

She knew she had to follow her heart even losing her parents

She followed her heart and married in spite of her parent's saying they wanted nothing to do with her or the marriage. Everything was going well for the two lovers until the yellow fever took him. Now she was with child and needed to at away from the fever.

the hidden baby

A wonderful story with lovable characters. The blending of two cultures was the basis this story was founded on. It was refreshing to read the truth of Native culture and see the love this community expressed to everyone. I loved the mail order bride story and the twist that brought them together as a total family.
