Flight Risk

Rate this book
With my life turned upside down after my father's sudden death, I was scared, alone, and desperate to get out when I left NYC. I was never going back, that is, of course until my new boyfriend's sister decides to get married there. Ghosts from my past come to haunt me, but I can't let Brooks into this part of me yet, if ever. I don't want to leave him or the sleepy small town I've grown to love, but it might be the only option I have to keep us both safe.

She lit up my life like a million fireflies, but in the wake of Persephone’s absence, I am left feeling burnt by her betrayal. She vanished without a trace, without a crumb, and worst of all, without telling me she was leaving. Her lies continue to unravel around me, forcing me to consider if I ever really knew her at all.  I have to choose between my run-away girlfriend and my family, but something is just not adding up and I'm going to find out what before I lose everything I love.

I really enjoyed this book. It reads like a Hallmark Romance movie sans all the cheesiness. Very well written. And of course included the staple phrase, "released a breathe I didn't know I was holding." A must for any novel ;)

This book wow. I expected a solid 4 star read but it surpassed into the 5 star realm.

Seph is a woman trying to escape her past which leads her to Brooks. It starts with all the romcom feels in a small town and goes into a slight mystery read. I don’t want to give anymore away then that, because the turns this book took had me not putting it down.

The smutt is not there in this book, I think the author said it’s because it’s book one and her family will be reading (totally understandable) and she made up for it!

All I can say is I want a Brooks and Seph may be the strongest heroines I’ve seen in awhile.

“She’s a damn flight risk and all I want to do is keep her grounded and out of harm’s way.”

The author also has an amazing Podcast.

Wow. This story is full of twists and turns while somehow also weaving together a story that makes sense. Brooks is dreamy and made of the best parts of what a guy should be.

First of all, I could not put this book down. It was so engaging and exciting! E. L. has a perfect balance of fun, sweet, sexy moments between our two main characters and suspenseful, and even action filled moments that had me literally screaming (my fiancé came in our room to make sure I was ok lol). The banter between Seph and Brooks had me laughing out loud and smiling like an idiot the whole time. Personally, as a huge movie fan myself, the film references were placed so perfectly. I loved how they were sprinkled through out the dialogue and exquisitely called back to later!

If you want a book that reads like a movie with great characters, dialogue, romance without being overly smutty (finally a romance book I can recommend to my mom!!), and a suspense to keep you flipping pages, THIS IS FOR YOU!

Also as a side note, Brooks reads to me like a younger Matthew McConaughey, so if you want that image, I highly recommend picking this up.

I don't typically read "real life" romances because I tend to get bored, but man this one kept my attention. It felt a little miscommunication trope-y for a little bit (which I didn't love) and I thought it might be spicier but in the end - solid 4 stars. The author had great banter between the couple which really was a joy to read.

Couldn’t put this down. So wonderfully written. Not a huge romance book reader, or reader in general, but this kept me on my toes.

I want to start of saying I loved this book. It kept me on my toes the whole time. I especially liked that main characters who felt like normal people and the plot was very realistic. Highly recommend anyone who loves romance and suspense to read this.

This reminded me of a Hallmark/Lifetime romance movies and I was here for it!! I thought it had a great combination of romance and suspense. Although I was hoping for a bit of smut and the fade to blacks saddened me 🥺, only reason I bumped it down .5 stars.

I loved all the pop culture references!! And the way they both screamed THE BEATLES as the best rock band of all time had me dying, because DUH!!! 🥰 I found myself laughing so much with the dialogues between Brooks & Persephone. I loved their banter and chemistry.

I figured out the climax and was very pleased with myself 😆. I truly hated Harrison, Blaire and Brooks mom… also Brooks frustrated me to no end. Loved how everything came together in the end!!

All in all I’m super impressed by this debut!! Loved that she called the uncles “the cadre” (SJM/TOG reference). So excited to see what Erica writes next!

⛔️ Trigger warnings: physical abuse, forced physical contact, stalking, victim blaming, gaslighting, panic attacks.

I love this book from the bottom of my heart. As I read it, I could feel the love between Persephone and Brooks, and I fell in love with them as a couple the second I met them. It felt like true love as I read their relationship. I fell in love with the characters, and loved the suspense/mystery that came along that love story. This book was amazing!

I never write reviews but this book!!! I generally hate endings but was extremely satisfied with this one. Brooks is amazing and definitely swoon worthy! I stayed up all night to finish it. There are twists and turns! The romance will wrap you up so you don’t even see them coming. This is definitely going on my comfort reads shelf! I highly recommend!

Flight Risk is chock full of the wit, banter, and lil references that make it feel like such a natural connection between the characters. Seph and Brooks are so damn likable that I want to go on a double date with them. Just the act of judging a date by their food order hooked me. Their relationship was beautifully built, without the rush, just a good, realistic timeline. Sprinkle in a bit of drama and mystery, then add a dash of excellent banter--I can't wait to read more from E.L. DePinto!

This book was a pleasant break from my usual fantasy books and a great beach read!

It had the "lack of communication" between characters that often comes with a romance, which is always a bit frustrating, but the pay off was worth it in the end. The twist and turns were exciting and for once, ones I was not expecting.

A good read.

Such a wonderful debut novel! I loved the romance between our witty, wild beauty (Persephone) and her handsome southern man (Brooks). Their banter was fantastic and I loved how natural it was. In part two, I felt for my boy every time Seph ran away or shut him out. Poor boy was just out here trying to love her. 😂

I had an audible "OH SHIT" moment when all the dots connected on 187. I loved it. I live for the drama. This book had great balance and I enjoyed the overall flow while reading. Also, I deeply appreciated the several "I released a breath I didn't know I was holding" sprinkled in. Loved those little gems.

I honestly enjoyed my time with this book. It was a quick read, but sweet and suspenseful in all the right ways. Definitely recommend!

I absolutely loved this story. Seeing the love grow between Persephone and Brooks was heartwarming. Seeing it grow from puppy dog love to unconditional love and seeing they way the protected each other was really heart warming. Writing about a victim of abuse is tough but I feel Erica did it well. There is often so much shame in being the victim and I feel it was captured in a way that felt real without drawing it out too much.
Overall, a great read!

I released a breath I didn't even know I was holding

This book was so good! I tried so hard to hold out reading this book, to savour the first time reading it... I did not do that. Did I have other obligations? Yes. Work? Who is she? University? I don't know her. All I know is that I needed to read this book. And holy fucking shit it was so good!

I loved the characters, I loved Seph and Brooks, and their whole dynamic. I loved the plot, I am not one typically for suspense-romance, because I fell like I either don't care for the romance element, or the suspense isn't that suspenseful. But this mf book, was a freaking delight. I loved both elements and thought they worked so well together. The twists, were also done really well, I audibly gasped. And the writing was really enjoyable, it wasn't overly pretentious, or dramatic. All of it was so good. So, just read this fucking book!

this review is subject to change, because I finished this book five minutes ago and my thoughts are all over the place, and I don't think I can write a coherent review.

I’ve been thinking about what I want to say about this all day, so here goes nothing.

I absolutely devoured this book in two sittings (it would’ve been one, but I had to get some sleep), and I loved every second of it. Persephone and Brooks were characters I was rooting for, and I was able to feel for both of them deeply throughout their story. The thriller-suspense added to the romance of this story made it an excellent weekend binge and I’m so happy I read it!

I’d also like to say that I’ve had the honor of talking with Erica over the past few months and I was so excited for her to release her first novel. I look forward to reading more! 🙌🏼

Talk about a debut novel! This had me absolutely hooked from the very first page. I laughed, I cried, I sat on the edge of my seat in anticipation of what would happen next. Just the right amount of romance and suspense, this should be on everyone's shelf!!

It’s been a long time since I’ve read a book like this one. The main characters couldn’t have been written better, and the timeline that the author put together was freaking brilliant. Just when you think you’ve wrapped your mind around the whole book you get hit with a jaw dropping plot twist. I’m pretty random when it comes to my book selection. Only a few times have I been so enthralled by a book that I knew I would buy every single book that author put out. I literally stalk Natasha Preston’s releases and pre order anything that woman blesses us with haha. Depinto will definitely be an author I choose time and again!! Or should I say Bakos😉 In all seriousness though I highly recommend checking out this book. I’d be shocked if you didn’t like it.

Flight Risk had a great storyline with likable characters and sassy dialogue. I loved the plot and the way the two character’s lives were intertwined.

With a little bit more editing and polishing, this book could have been amazing, but I think it fell just short of my expectations. Some of the scenes were a little back and forth and there were a lot of choppy time frames and chapters.. I just felt like the story could have been better organized to hit my emotions a little bit harder and I think a few rewrites with an editor could have worked wonders.

Still, I loved the characters and once I adjusted my expectations, I ended up really enjoying it. I hope the author continues to write books because I think she’ll grow into a great romance author!

This book is 40% romance and 60% suspense and it does both well. The complex characters will draw you in and the fast paced plot will keep you hooked. Every time I thought I figured out what was going to happen next, I was hit with another incredible plot twist! The best part is that all of the little details tied together beautifully at the end and no holes were left in the plot. There were a few minor plot points that didn’t sit right with me but didn’t take away from my overall enjoyment of this book. The writing style was really beautiful and I truly couldn’t stop reading until I finished it. I am eager to read whatever Erica writes next!!!

Being a debut novel, I expected it to be fine, but lacking somewhat. It was so much more than fine though. The characters seemed realistic and their interactions were relatable, which is something I find to be missing with the more popular modern romance stuff these days. It was also refreshing to root for a MMC who wasn't a morally grey character. Seph and Brooks' relationship was beautiful and I don't doubt I'll inevitably pick it up to read again whenever I want another refreshing love story. I look forward to whatever else Erica produces!

I found out about this book from my favorite book podcast, Books N’ Betches!!

The big secret being dragged along for so long was very frustrating lol! Brooks not knowing anything ugh I wish Persephone had told him sooner 😫. The beginning was a little info dumpy. Hmm well I still enjoyed the book a lot. Brooks was so wholesome and they were so cute together. The sister was such a bitch. So was the mom.

It was a decent enough story. Some action a bit of suspense. Didn't take that long to read. There were quite a few typos or wrong words though which annoyed me. That was the Kindle edition.
