A dead man in a cemetery isn’t news—unless he’s found on top of a grave, with a bullet through his head. The body belongs to Jude Henley, who was supposed to be buried below. Instead, the grave contains the remains of Staci Gale, thought to have run away nearly three decades ago. Then an old VCR tape arrives at the sheriff station, showing Staci before her death—bound and terrified—with a note, claiming to be from the killer’s apprentice . . .
PRACTICE
Rachel Fisher’s job in cold case files has brought her back to Pike, Wisconsin—where she’ll be working alongside her ex-husband, Zac Evans. As Pike’s interim sheriff, Zac expected a low-key assignment. Instead, he and Rachel are racing to solve serial murders from decades past while a new monster goads them with a chilling promise. Every week there’ll be another old tape—and a fresh victim . . .
MAKES PERFECT . . .
In this small town a killer walks—twisted, ruthless, determined to continue his master’s work. And unless Rachel and Zac can find a way to get ahead of him, the nightmare will never end.
I'm not exactly sure when I fell in love with books. Probably on my mother's knee listening to her read Dr. Seuss to me. I do remember that I was barely old enough to cross the street by myself when I discovered the delights of the local library. Could anything be more wonderful than spending summer days surrounded by stacks of Nancy Drew mysteries? Over the years I fell in love with Victoria Holt, Jane Austen, Agatha Christie, and J.R.R. Tolkien just to name a few. I read poetry, essays, biographies, and plays. In fact, I read anything I could get my hands on.
Years later (no, I'm not admitting how many) I'm still an avid reader, and my tastes are still as varied as they were in my youth, which I suppose helps to explain why I enjoy writing regency historicals under the name of Deborah Raleigh, as well as my contemporary paranormals as Alexandra Ivy. For now that is enough to keep me busy, but who knows what the future might hold!
I do have a few other loves in my life besides reading and writing, the most important being my unbelievably patient husband, David, and my two sons, Chance and Alexander. Without their constant support and belief in me, I never could have been able to follow my dreams. They are truly my heroes.
Unstable by Alexandra Ivy 3rd book the Pike, Wisconsin series. Romantic suspense. Can be read as a stand-alone. Rachel works cold cases and Zak is interim sheriff of Pike. Together they investigate a history of gruesome murders they hope will lead to the current serial killer that is threatening the women in town.
I liked the dynamics between Rachel and Zak. Divorced from a marriage too young, they still are attracted to each other and protective. Having similar careers make their combined investigation seem almost seamless. I didn’t feel much heat between them but they do get a scene in their downtime. This town is cursed. This is the third sheriff, not to mention a third serial killer. It was also really intense and gripping and worth reading. A thriller with a dash of romance.
An unusual murder brings Rachel Fisher back to Pike Wisconsin where she’ll be joining forces with her ex husband Zach Evans. Pushing low ket assignments aside, the pair focus on a new villain who will send them a video tape every week with a new victim.
This monster is intent on finishing a murderer from years agos work. The duo must put aside old habits and new rivalries and work together to stop this menace.
I liked the premise of the book more than the actual book. While it held my attention and the action started off fairly early, I did not like the characters.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for this arc in exchange for my honest review.
Solid Romantic-Suspense. I love when the author can keep the baddie hidden right up to the end of the book and that is certainly the case here. The Pike, Wisconsin Series has been wonderful with its' classic Romantic-Suspense plots where the romance doesn't get in the way of the suspense.
Zac Evans had big dreams for his future and the woman of his dreams to share it with. Then his father becomes ill, and Zac is sucked back to the dying dairy farm and a life he never wanted. Now, his father had died, his mom has moved to town, he has sold the dairy cows and leased the land. He is embarking on his new job as interim sheriff for Pike, Wisconsin, a job he is well trained for and really likes.
When a dead body is discovered in the cemetery, on top of the plot and not below it is soon discovered that the body is that of Jude Henley and the plot he was found on was supposed to be his final resting place. Uncovering what happened leads Zac to what appears to be a serial killing spree. But this killer didn't off himself and soon Zac receives a package from the killer's apprentice and a woman from town disappears.
Rachel Fisher is Zac's forever love, but sometimes these things just don't work out. She is a detective working cold cases in the big city and one of her cases leads he back to Pike and Zac. It was just a matter of time and proximity, and Rachel and Zac are together in the race to solve both the crimes of the past and to prevent the murder of more young women.
My thanks to Zebra, Publisher, and Alexandra Ivy, author, for providing a complimentary digital Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) of this novel via NetGalley. This is my fair, honest and personal review. All opinions are mine alone and were not biased in any way.
BOOK: Unstable SERIES: Pike, Wisconsin #3 - can be read as standalone GENRE: thriller TROPES & THEMES: serial killer, mystery-solving, psychological thriller, light romance side plot, small town, second chance romance, grief CLIFFHANGER: no HOTTIE METER: 🔥 RATING: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ RELEASE DATE: April 26th, 2022
Picked this book up because of beautiful cover stayed to learn who is the killer...
Rachel comes back to her hometown to solve a murder. There her ex-husband is a sheriff and together they are caught in a web of solving current and cold cases intertwined in secrets, mistaken identities, complicated family relationships.
As with many thriller books, it is better to go in blind. So, I don't want to give too much away. You don't have to read previous books to read this one.
I loved the tension, pace of the story, and anticipations. Even though I like thrillers with romance subplots, this one didn't disappoint. The healthy representation of second chance romance with a couple who had to work through their past trauma and come back together while also working in the same intense field was very refreshing.
* Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for giving me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review
Unstable is Book 3 of Pike Winsconsin series by Alexandra Ivy. I do like this book more than the previous 2 books that I read. The storyline is more gripping and Ms Ivy kept throwing red herring to her readers that I kept changing my mind as to who is the killer.
We're back to small-town Pike, Wisconsin and this time we have second chance romance with a serial killer on the loose. I really do like Zac and Rachel, eventhough they're divorced their relationship was not toxic. Infact, both still harbours feelings for each other and especially Zac who regretted walking away from their marriage. I must say that their romance took a back seat and Ms Ivy concentrated more on the suspense and horror of an unhinged serial killer on the loose. The story is engaging and with very little downtime. I'm liking this series more and more, hopefully we will come back to Pike soon.
Thanks NetGalley for the copy, this is my honest review.
Unstable by Alexandra Ivy, which is the third book in her Pike, Wisconsin series, is a very suspenseful, chilling serial killer thriller. The plot is nicely paced and well-thought-out. The characters are well developed and the storyline flows smoothly. I enjoyed following along with cold case Detective Rachel Fisher and her ex-husband Pike interim sheriff Zac Evans as they raced to stop a serial killer and managed to rekindle their relationship. This was a fascinating read about a brutal serial killer.
Thought I'd never see a functioning, non toxic second chance romance sub plot in a thriller but here it is! This book is fast paced enough to keep you guessing and turning pages. It's also written from multiple POVs including the killers which adds A LOT to the whole unsettling experience..
There's nothing else to say really, I enjoyed the suspence so much I read the whole book in one sitting but I'd say it's better to go into this as blindly as possible. The less things you know the harder the revelations will hit.
Thank you NetGalley & Kensington Books for the digital ARC
Every time I thought I knew who was doing what and why, I was wrong – and I love it when an author surprises me.
The romance was nice, though comfortable (zingless?).
Readers should note that, although the book isn’t too graphic, you do get to experience some of the murders through the POV of the baddie and it’s intense and uncomfortable.
Altogether an exciting read that kept me turning the pages!
I went in this book completely blind as I totally fell in love with this gorgeous cover 😍!
It was better than I could have imagined! I had no clue this was a series, so it can definitely be read as a stand-alone…and to be honest, I feel I enjoyed even more starting with this book. I can now guess what the first two books in the series would be about, yet I am planning on buying and reading those now as well!
This is a crime fiction thriller through and through. A small town appears to have a copycat serial lady killer on their hands, that the town was unaware of the prior serial killer 30 years before.
Add some romantic heat in the mix as the detectives on the case were previously married and you have a winner of a book.
Romantic suspense, when it’s done correctly, is one of the best genres to get your pulse-pounding and flipping pages in anticipation and heightened need to finish fast.
Alexandra Ivy has wiggled her way to my top 3 list for romantic suspense authors by far with this smash hit!!
UNSTABLE is the third instalment in Alexandra Ivy’s contemporary, adult PIKE, WISCONSIN slightly romantic, suspense thriller series focusing on the people of Pike Wisconsin. This is thirty year old , Pike Wisconsin interim Sheriff Zac Evans, and cold case Detective Rachel Fisher’s story line. UNSTABLE can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary.
Told from first person perspective (the killer) and several third person perspectives UNSTABLE follows in the discovery of a body long thought buried and dead. The identity of the body in the local cemetary reveals the victim was a man thought to have died close to thirty years earlier but the exhumation of his grave exposes the remains of a woman who disappeared years before. Enter cold case Detective Rachel Fisher, interim Sheriff Zac Evan’s ex-wife, and one-half of an investigation team that will expose the resurrection of a possible serial killer. As several local women go missing, and their murders are recorded for posterity, Rachel and Zac struggle to unravel a series of clues that date back close to thirty years, clues that affirm a possible copycat killer in Pike, Wisconsin. With each murder, a new videotape is released, a videotape that may or may not be connected to the current killer or a killer from the past. What ensues is the rebuilding relationship between Zac and Rachel, as our couple begin to suspect a number of residents, as well as one or two of their own. Like many small towns, Pike Wisconsin’s dead refuse to remain silent, and the victims begin to talk from the grave.
Rachel and Evan’s marriage imploded years before but working together pushed our couple to remember what was and what will never be. As the number of missing and murdered women begin to climb, more than one person is suspect, and a long forgotten piece of information reveals a secret that is about to be exposed.
UNSTABLE is a story of murder and abuse, obsession and fixation, history and family, forgiveness and love. The premise is intriguing and riveting; the characters are energetic, colorful and curious; the romance is passionate but limited, taking a back seat to the search for a killer.
I read this bc of the second chance theme, but it wasn't even really used as a plot point. The author seems to be phoning this series in. Three stars are for writing alone and the fact that I didn't figure out who the bad guy was by mid-way through the book. Also, how many serial killers can you plausibly have in a 20 mile radius with this series? Happy for now ending. I will not be buying the series again or in all probability even seeking the books out to read. A shame really, it started out so well.
A divorced couple both in law enforcement find themselves up against a serial killer. I have enjoyed this authors Pike series although perhaps struggle with the idea of so many monsters living in the same town. Yet again it appears that history is replaying as new victims are discovered and the race is on to capture a brutal killer. Red herrings abound although I admit I certainly had worked out who the newest killer was. I don't mind at all that the romance felt secondary but do wish the murderer had been less obvious. Nevertheless it was fun to read, dark at times and as usual a joy to follow. This voluntary take is of a copy I requested from Netgalley and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair
The body of a supposedly long-dead man is found on top of his grave, and an exhumation reveals the remains of Staci Gale, the local vet's absentee mother. Pike's interim Sheriff, Zac Evans, is further surprised when Rachel Fisher, a cold case detective and his former wife, arrives with information that Zac's bodies are related to a series of unsolved murders. Is there another serial killer in Pike?
Series note: Although set in the same small town as book #1, the characters and plot are unrelated to previous books.
Similar to the first two books in this series, the focus is on the suspense plot and the romance is secondary. Ivy's writing flows; the action is suspenseful, and there are some solid twists along the way. That said, the descriptions of the murders are graphic (although not nearly as detailed or gruesome as Tess Gerritsen or Karin Slaughter). The killer's identity is pretty obvious mainly because the red herrings may as well be labeled with flashing neon signs.
Rachel and Zac are likable as individuals, but their second-chances romance is the weakest in the series. The reasons for their divorce are never fully explained, and their reunion is very proforma without much chemistry or emotion.
All in all, Pike is turning out to be a small-town nexus for killers of all types. I definitely won't be moving there.
First off the previous books in this series were ok and I went into this one expecting ok what I got was edge of your seat suspenseful greatness!
Zac Evans is a small town sheriff with a serial killer in his backyard. When a man supposedly years dead turns up murdered in a local cemetery the puzzle begins.
The student becomes the master.
Rachel Evans is Zac’s ex wife and in charge of cold cases. Word of this murder leads her back to Pike. The killer is playing with them.
Let’s add some spice to the game. I’ll give you 24 hours to find us. Tick tock.
Little bit lacking in the romance department but that doesn’t take away from the story at all. The ending was a total shock and creepy as he** This story knocked it out of the park. It was outstanding.
Unstable, by Alexandra Ivy., Although this suspenseful book seemed to move slowly it still was able to give me all the qualities of a good book. The story offered so many twist and turns of who could be the killer. Those were a few of the good parts to the book. The flashbacks of returning to previous murders was a added plus to the story. Having Zac team up with his wife was awesome too. I like that Zac was the lawman of his town and was able to keep track of nearly everyone, meaning he new what was happening in his town. The book is a good story and I look to more to read from the author.
What a thrilling read!! The mystery surrounding the gruesome murders was fantastic. I love it when the crime makes you do a double take. Very well done!!
I enjoyed the romance as well. Grateful that it didn’t overshadow the suspense. Zac and Rachel get a second chance and it was pretty sweet.
Loved the small town of Pike with all its secrets and gossips. Made for an entertaining read!!
Alexandra Ivy is one fabulous author.
Thank you NetGalley and Kensington Books for the e-ARC in exchange for my honest review.
a very good suspense read, though lacking a bit when it comes to the romance angle sadly. I am enjoying the series for sure, but was hoping for more of that.

Let me start off by saying that this was the first novel in this series that I have read, so while there may have been a bit of background involving Zac and Rachel that I might have missed, I had no problems understanding this story (including the nature of their relationship which I will touch on a bit more later).
Overall, I enjoyed the "mystery" part of this story. I felt that the tapes and murders from the past being tied in to the murders currently taking place was an interesting concept (especially when you consider how in at least once instance the tape was delivered in a way that would make the victim easier to identify). I also enjoyed getting a look inside the killers mind, I always love when an author takes a chance on showing us their mindset. Filled with some red herrings, this book kept me guessing until the final reveal.
On the flip side, I didn't feel as though the romance between Rachel and Zac was believable. They were divorced, with a lot of unresolved issues surrounding their marriage and why it failed. And while they worked well together, and it was obvious they still harbored feelings for one another, they did nothing in regards to even talking about the issues that separated them the first time. They just kind of went "well I almost lost you and I love you, so we're going to make this work". I would have liked for there to be some sort of conversation between the pair to make that fresh start seem less thrown in just for the sake of a happily-ever-after.
If you enjoy engaging thriller novels with just a dash of romance, than I think this one will appeal to you!
DISCLAIMER: I received a complimentary copy of this novel from the publisher. This has not affected my review in any way. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are 100% my own.

Synopsis: A dead man in a cemetery isn’t news—unless he’s found on top of a grave, with a bullet through his head. The body belongs to Jude Henley, who was supposed to be buried below. Instead, the grave contains the remains of Staci Gale, thought to have run away nearly three decades ago. In this small town a killer walks—twisted, ruthless, determined to continue his master’s work. And unless Rachel and Zac can find a way to get ahead of him, the nightmare will never end.
My Thoughts: The chapters are average length. The POV of the books is from Zac, Interim Sheriff of Pike. With a serial killer lurking in town, Zak and Rachel has to find to a way to stop him before more women are murdered, the clock is ticking. Even though this a third book in a series, I was able to follow along with no issues, making this a great stand alone book. The author created these characters, primarily Rachel and Zak, that work well together, even though they are divorced, it just works. The descriptions the author portrays in the book is so vivid, you feel like you are right there investigating with them. The author keeps you engaged, fast-pace, chilling thriller. This was a great read and makes me want to go back to the other books in the series. I recommend you pick up this book that is already out.
Now even though this is the third book in a series, reading it as a stand-alone like I did, gave me no issues or confusion! So don't let that hold you back. I loved how Ivy made this an easy, but fast paced suspenseful thriller that kept you interested and curious! The tension is never lacking in this one. You get swept up in the story & the clues and plot. Zac is the interim sherif in Pike, Wisconsin and has his first interesting murder case. An abandoned truck on the side of a cemetery, a dead body belonging to Jude Henley, only to be laying across his own tombstone. Zac's ex-wife Rachel, works on cold cases and comes across a hit in her database connecting Jude and an old case of hers. Working together to figure out the intricacies of their cases, leads to something more sinister and taunting every week with tapes. In a town so small, who could be the killer? And why? With the subplot of some romance I didn't mind that and it didn't take away from the crime which I love! I even appreciated the fact that Ivy had some POV from the murderer of what was happening that I found unique!
Thank you to NetGalley & Kensington Books (Zebra) for this DARC. Release Date: April 26, 2022
This the FIRST book in months where I couldn't predict who was the killer and the backstory of the murders. It was absolutely refreshing though!. Honestly, the whole storyline was great. Everything flowed smoothly and connected very well.
Rachael and Zac's relationship after their divorce was interesting to read. They are obviously super familiar with each other that at moments you get confused that they are still married or in a relationship. This part adds more drama into the story. Would love to see more books with these types of MCs because it creates more "spice" (the nonsexual kind).
Unsure if the book is meant for teenagers or young adults because some of the stuff mentioned is a little messed up. But, Alexandra Ivy outdid herself with this one! Would totally read sequels or other books by her now :)
I don't know why Isaac was in his 50s in my mind 🫤 so it was off putting when everything was revealed. The incompetency from the people in this book 🤦♀️ it was so annoying. And all the people with a fascination to be difficult and hide everything to hinder the investigation 🙄 it could have been easier if people stopped lying without reason. And the romance. Rachel and Zac divorced 8years ago cause Rachel was too ambitious of her work and Zac had to leave her for his family farm and Zac's mother is territorial. In the end we see Zac was ready to sell the farm but we don't know how he came to that decision. Rachel created a balance between her work and personal life (I wouldn't say so but whatever) and that's it they're back together. They did not really had a talk you know. A proper discussion of what happened and why from their pov. So it felt lackluster.

Unstable, the third instalment in Alexandra Ivy’s series set in Pike, Wisconsin, is action-packed. Rachel Fisher returns to Pike when the dead body of a man is discovered atop a grave. Her ex-husband, Zac Evans is a sheriff there and they will work together in a spider's web of current and cold cases laden with secrets, mistaken identities and familial relationships.
A compelling second chance romantic suspense tale with great, well-constructed characters and an interesting plot, I'm keen to pick up the two instalments I've missed.
I received a complimentary copy of this novel at my request from Kensington Books, Zebra via NetGalley and this review is my unbiased opinion.
You know.... I keep getting sucked into these trilogies !
I requested Unstable, after obsessing over the cover. Then when I was approved I realized it was Book #3 in a series. So, of course I had to go back and download the previous two books, Don't Look and Faceless.
This is an incredible series and although Unstable is book 3, it could be read as a standalone but why would you want to do that to yourself? Book 1 and 2 were equally as great and also builds foundation.
Filled with twists and explosive secrets, this book is jam packed with suspense that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Alexandra Ivy does an incredible job narrating this story.
OMG! This was one scary book! I literally jumped out of my seat several times while reading. If my hair wasn't already white, it would've turned that way after reading this. Word of warning, some scenes were pretty grisly, and I had to skim through some of those pages. I also skimmed some of the lovey-dovey stuff. Not my cuppa. Otherwise, this would've rated a 5. PS: I did not guess who the killer was, which is unusual for me. Wow!
