Alice Skye #6

Veil's Fall

Rate this book
A powerful witch. A forgotten memory. A dangerous prophecy.

Alice Skye has come a long way since she was an inexperienced witch at the Supernatural Intelligence Bureau. Having fought monsters, ruthless assassins and a savage wolf shifter or two, she’s sure there’s no crisis too catastrophic for her to overcome.

But nothing could prepare her for what the fates have planned.

With vampires turning up drained of blood, whispers of an uprising and portals opening randomly across the city, Alice’s carefully constructed control is put to the test.

Her legendary power is growing once again, her inner fire twisting in turmoil, wanting to break free and destroy everything in its path.

Alice is on the verge of becoming War, a destiny she has struggled against her whole life. But there are those who would use the prophecy to their advantage, to tear the veil between the realms and shatter the delicate balance that has been there since the beginning of time.

Will the veil fall and release the horrors that are imprisoned in The Nether below?

Or will Alice rewrite her own destiny?

The hunt has begun.

Veil's Fall is the sixth and final instalment in this nail-biting, action packed Dark Urban Fantasy series by Taylor Aston White. Follow Alice as she battles her Daemons, and unveils dark secrets in a modern world of magic.

This is the finale in the series and personally IMO it felt dragged out. I was loving this series books 1 - 4 were great but from book 5 to this I really do not know what went wrong for me I felt a lot was repeated and Alice really needed to work on her dialogue, her main statement to everything was shit, shit, shit. Got kind of annoying after a while.

I have however got Kiss of Darkness on TBR List and I'm interested to see how it goes for The Guardians.

I was excited and terrified for this book because it's the end of the series which means that all my favorite characters are going to suffer a lot before it's over.
Anyway, after getting over my fear, I read the book and I could not put it down! This story has everything you need in a final book: there's action, romance, and a bit of humor. I really enjoyed Lucy getting more involved in this story and his interesting choice in wardrobe (and his critique of circles).
Another thing I enjoyed was the multiple POVs, the author can get into the voices of the different characters and it allows for more interesting storytelling.
I loved getting to follow Alice on her journey to saved the world and avoid becoming War. She's an amazing character and I'm sad to see her series end.
I cannot recommend this story enough. It's a fantastic ending for Alice (and Riley and Sam...) and I hope you enjoy it, too!!

Note: the entire series is written in British English and I recommend reading the previous 5 books in the series in order first before reading this one.

This is a brilliant read.
Wonderful well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start.
Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believable.
Great suspense and found myself second guessing every thought I had continuously.
Can't wait to read what the author brings out next.
Recommend reading.

I read a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest review.

„Veil’s Fall“ by Taylor White is the sixth and final installment in the “Alice Skye Series”, and the conclusion Alice has been (sometimes unknowingly) racing to for the very beginning, a wonderful and fully satisfying end to a highly enjoyable series. But I’m going ahead of myself. As everybody already knows in the beginning Alice Skye was Paladin Agent for the SIB (Supernatural Intelligence Bureau), who in the course of her adventures became an independent Paladin agent, working with the so-called Spook Squad, the supernatural squad in the local police department, and in special with Detective Brady, and subsequently has successfully fought Daemons, monsters, rogue wolf shifters, a corrupt Archdruid, some hellhounds and withstood The Council’s tribunal, but none of it could have possible prepare her for this final trial.

Alice has conquered Fate once and again, but this time Fate is out to get her: the Veil is falling, facilitating the random opening of portals all throughout the city, while drained vampire bodies keep turning up…. Alice control is about to break, which could be very, very bad….. The only way to stop the catastrophe is to rewrite fate, the only question being…. Is Alice really up to it?

This is the Alice greatest adventure, the whole fate of the world depends on her, the stakes are high, the danger is considerable, but the rewards are incommensurable. Taylor White’s writing style is – as always – captivating, crisp, and addictive; the story blends plot and character development into a single most coherent narrative string garnished with fast-paced action, dark aesthetics, a very high dose of mystery and dramatic tension, graphic situations, and the right amount of romance and chemistry to highlight the adventure without overshadowing the story.

My thoughts upon finishing the series...

I love Sam and Luci; they're great. I think the series has a lot of potential, but currently it just seems to be... lacking.

There's plenty of action, conflict, world-building, but it still felt like details were missing. As the plot unfolded it felt kind of choppy and I think there were some topics that never got the explanation they deserved. What happened with Nate? That whole plotline in this book was weird and just abruptly ended. What about Zander and the dark witch? Seemed like something was brewing there. And the aftermath of the Spook Squad bringing in Imani? She was introduced, showed up briefly, and then the whole team was just forgotten about. Lots of loose ends to tie up.

And the narration. I'm sorry, but it was atrocious. It didn't improve at all. The normal narration was perfectly fine, had emotion and intonation, and I really liked her voice. But everything else was awful: all of the character's voices. Alex was so high and squeaky; Riley always sounded annoyed or sarcastic with Alex (even when it was supposed to be romantic); half of the guardians sounded like pissed-off little gnomes; some of the council would alternate between higher and lower voices... The pet names were kinda cute at first, but they were overused (with everyone).

The voices mixed with the writing made all the romantic scenes awkward and uncomfortable. Everything felt rushed, forced, and unnatural; no one seemed like they were actually enjoying themselves. I had to keep reminding myself throughout the series of the connections between characters because you couldn't feel it in their interactions.

I gave all the books 3 stars because I loved the concept, but it probably deserves much less. Character development needs work. And another round of editing/proofreading -- the repeated use of "opaque" in this book instead of "transparent" was terrible, especially after giving the description of being able to see through an object.

No book six spoilers

I am so excited for this author! I tore through this series, super excited when this final book released. I feel satisfied with the ending, and I really appreciate the characters growth! The romance was obviously a large part of the books but I never feel that it stifled the plot and the male lead only added to her strength.

The *TRIGGER WARNING* sexual assault and abuse that happened in book one with Rex was not something that any characters looked down on her for. I felt empowered by my own choices through Alice’s inner dialogue, her decision to forgive or not, to forgive the person but still never forgive the action has always been something I have tried to do as well. Even when she was back in contact with Rex, it’s actually common for a victim to remain in contact with their abuser, Riley didn’t judge her and stayed her constant support.

I cannot say enough how much I appreciated reading what Ms. White wrote. I’m hopeful that there will be a book on Kyra because she seems like a resilient woman but would be happy for any other arcane books!

good

All’s well that ends well…
As the veil begins to fall, Alice and her friends have to fight against both their unknown enemy and time, to prevent the end of everything; while Alice herself has to make sure that she’s not destroyed by those who think her death will prevent it all.

An explosive end to this series and story arc, though the author’s world continues in her spin-off series (thank goodness since we have some people we need to know more about!). Everything comes to a head as Alice, with Riley and her friends beside her, battles for the world!
There’s a LOT of action, adventure, death, and even some romance, as we see a number of loose ends knit together to answer some of the questions raised throughout the series.
Obviously, this isn’t a standalone story, it’s the final installment in an engrossing story arc that has to be read in order. Don’t worry though, it’s an enjoyable read that Urban Fantasy Fans (especially those who like their tales apocalyptic or on the darker side) will thoroughly enjoy reading.

I’m crying!!

But I don’t wanna let Alice go!!!! I’ve absolutely fallen in love with this series and I’m so not ready to let go. But I must say- this was an awesome wrap up AND there’s a spin off!!!!!! YASSSSSS!!!!!!!! I have a feeling who it’s gunna be about and I’m thrilled!

This series is very rich with a little bit of everything. It’s full of surprises and it’s here’s been so much growth from multiple characters. Especially Sam and Alice, and even Riley and even some of the guardians. The world building and thought process was great. Seriously, I’m full on cheering because it’s rare to have a great series stay great all the way through plus follow up with a fantastic ending! Well done!!!! I can’t wait to see what you’ve got in store for us next!!

Read books 2-6 in 3 days so kind of hard to separate them out into individual books so will talk about series as a whole. I really enjoyed the series - it had all the elements of what makes a truly enjoyable UF series for me. There is an overarching or bigger storyline to do with Alice's destiny of which we learn more in each book, along with a separate case for Alice to solve and romance, but the romance doesn't overshadow the plot and it is not the only relationship, Alice also has friends & colleagues. Alice is suitably kickass but not in an annoyingly Mary Sue way. She is relatable and the relationship between her and her best friend leopard shifter Sam is probably my favourite thing in the whole series.

I have read all the books in the Alice Skye series at least twice and will probably do so again in the future. I was able to be an ARC reader for the last 3 and because I want Taylor Aston White to keep at it, I also bought the books. I hate that the series is finished but know that the author will continue the world with more directed books on the other characters - I can’t wait!!

This was a fitting end and I love the way so many of the characters became intertwined. The plot is full of twists and turns, action, surprises and fun. If you haven’t read these books you are in luck because you will binge read for sure. No spoilers from me. Enjoy your read!

What an adventure!

I am so glad I started this series!

I love fantasy and sci-fi, especially when mythological history is thrown in the mix. Taylor did not disappoint, and I loved every minute that I did not hate this series!

I have three requirements to make my favorite list:

Did I laugh? Oh yes, and often out loud!
Did I cry? Multiple times, even in laughter and rage.
Did I get angry? Head-pounding FURY!

WARNING: There are multiple triggers in this series. While they do not detract from the storyline, they are potent for those with trauma in their past.

Definitely going on my top ten authors list!

I have been waiting to see how this will conclude and it doesn’t disappoint. Action packed from the start with lots of details. Alice is struggling and trying to stop herself turning into War, the veil is unstable and there are plans and counter-plans. So much happening and developing each time you turn the page! Fast paced and worth a second read. Really intriguing plot with dark themes that keeps you on the edge of your seat with an epic ending to this series.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Please authors... When you use another language, french for example PLEASE have a real french person to look at the translation.
Google trads is NOT good.
Every single book.

The story is pretty cool but had real difficulties to like Alice. No real idea why.
Maybe because she doesn't feel real. We never really know if she is incompetent or really great.
Don't know.
The love story should be really awesome but it lacks something

I love all the other characters.
I would really like to read the story of Kyra/xander
Peyton is awesome
Luci and Kyle 🤭

Veil's Fall, the sixth book of the Alice Skye, Witch Detective series, is an ebook I borrowed through Kindle Unlimited (KU). After a disappointing third book, I skipped to the end of the series to get the answers without the side trips and the poor proofreading.

The story had a satisfactory ending, but was littered with possessive ess ('s) errors, dropped hyphens (e.g. tier one=tier-one), and questionable word choices--which I find extremely annoying and difficult to read. The writing has improved from the first book, but the author needs a better editor.

I'm actually writing a review here for the series. While it took me a bit to get into the first book...world building and all...and there were times in the series that some areas seemed to drag a bit , overall, I enjoyed this series. Luckily for me, I found and started it after the full 7 installments were finished, so I just rolled from one book to the next until the finish. That, in itself, is a statement that I wan't to finish the series to completion. The characters melded well, I loved Sam, and the storyline kept you intrigued. Definitely entertaining.

Wow, this has been one twisted adventure, read the books in order. Your think she is trying valianty to leave it unopened, what she has always thought of as a curse, only to find.. great adventures and wonderful charactors that you love, hate, full of twisted friends, enemies, frenemies and allies when it counts.
But there is one truth you can't -always -change your destiny or can you??
Read this you will find it hard to put down.

A helluva ride

I am not good with words. Lol…that’s why I read a lot. I absolutely love all the books in this series. The main fm is strong, fearless and trying desperately to not become War and start the apocalypse. The good. Of course there are those who want exactly for that to happen. There is nonstop action, love and most all magic! If you love, action, complicated romance and magic, you won’t be disappointed!

Just an observation that doesn’t only apply to this author but to so many of the books I read: People pinching their noses. I swear, I have never ever seen a person live or even on screen do this. The other quirk is people reaching up to tuck their partner’s hair behind his/her ear. Doesn’t anyone wear their hair straight down and not pulled back?

Lots of action, HEA and there will be more stories about these characters in the future. What’s not to love?

Great story telling

Taylor pulled it off again another great fantastic And the fantasy genre. World building was exceptional as was character building. She makes you fall in love with her characters. She also knows how to grab your attention and keep you riveted to each page. It is extremely hard to put it the book down once you begin to read it. I highly recommend this book to anybody that loves fast paced action and the fantasy genre.

I really enjoyed the series - but felt last book was stretching - trying to tie up too many loose ends? I got bogged down by introduction of characters who were not in the story again. (Nether kings?) Riley’s beast bonded with Alice and neither knew until last battle? Alice killed by Pandora yet brought back to life by Riley? Angel saying that shouldn’t be … never explained. This was second time she was brought back to life. Enjoyed the books - but wished they flowed a little better.

Great series, we need more heroes like Alice

Great ending to a fast paced series with a believable hero. With principled demons and self centred angels, Taylor Aston White develops characters whose flaws make you want to know what happens to them. All set against a strong story line incorporating myths and legends. I can’t wait for the next series.

Don't read too fast or you'll be sorry they are over

These were interesting stories with an original take on ancient stories. I was in right away. Though my favorite character was a secondary one who happened to be a leopard. I'd say the adopted father got a short stick on his ending story. Lots of rules to keep track of throughout.

Great read. I read all six.

I enjoyed the first book. So I started the second, then needed to read the third. The forth book popped up so I read that one. The fifth one I was hooked and had to read the sixth book. I would not be up set to see a seventh come along. I really enjoyed this series. I don't like to give anything away. I couldn't put them down.

Save the Veil

Three of the Horsemen are still alive. Pandora, what she calls herself because she can't remember her real name, is out for blood, Alice's blood! Well, actually Pandora is out to steal Alice's magic and destroy the world by releasing evil from the Nether. Can Alice and her Guardians stop her?

A Must-Read

This series is tightly written and highly entertaining. The characters are wonderfully flawed and their relationships fully fleshed out. I love Alice. She meets all of the usual requirements for a heroine without falling into cliche. Riley is every woman's dream. I appreciated that the love scenes were implied and tasteful. All in all, a series worth your time.

Alice is back and so is the action, danger, and humor. Things are falling apart as usual in her life but Alice is Alice and I loved seeing what she faced and had to see what she would do. The story kept me glued to the end and I loved it.

Book Six

I have really enjoyed this series. I liked all the detective work woven through the series. The author struck the right note with the romance and scenes were intimate and not the focus of the story line.
