The New York Times bestselling author pairs a woman in search of her family's truth with a hard-hitting professional treasure hunter in this taut and thrilling new book. As an unknown assailant stalks them across the treacherous Superstition Mountains in Arizona, they race to follow their treasure map’s directions to a hidden trove of gold, but will they survive the danger long enough to reach their prize?
When Abigail Holland awakes to the sound of a nighttime intruder in her rambling Denver Victorian, she knows exactly what the black shrouded figure is after—the map she recently inherited from her grandfather. Whoever he is, the man who grapples with her, then escapes, is willing to kill for the location of a treasure King Farrell hunted for more than ten years. The Devil’s Gold has claimed hundreds of lives, and it was her grandfather’s obsession.
With a killer pursuing her and her own family not to be trusted, Abby decides to take up the search herself. But she’ll need help to do it, and there’s no one better than renowned explorer and treasure hunter Gage Logan. Despite the instant chemistry between them, Gage is reluctant. Innocent people have been hurt on his watch before. But when Abby shows him a genuine gold ingot she found with the map, his curiosity is piqued. Before long they’re heading into the flash floods and brutal winds of the Superstition Mountains, straight into a passionate entanglement—and the dark heart of danger.

The Last Mile by Kat Martin 2nd book in the Blood Ties series. Romantic suspense. Can be read as a stand-alone. Abigail’s grandfather leaves her a treasure map in his will. She teams up with Gage to go on a treasure hunt where danger is around every corner.
Abigail makes it clear to Gage and the reader that’s she’s up for an adventure and brave enough to handle any issues. Gage has some issues to deal with from his past. The suspense throughout the book is steady and chilling. The romance is steamy. A great addition to the lineup.
Oh, oh, oh! I love Treasure Hunter plots! Love, Love, LOVE! Hot, really hot, romance, nail biting suspense and a plot twist or two thrown in. "The Last Mile" is almost everything you could want in your Treasurer Hunter experience. But it just didn't live large like a Treasure Hunter plot should. All I can say is that it felt flat to me.
Abigail Holland has just lost her grandfather, Treasure Hunter King Farrell, who didn't return from his last adventure. She is grieving and more than curious about a map that is part of her inheritance. King was a legendary explorer and Abby always wanted to go with him on an expedition, but the timing was never right and now he's gone. But he left her a map to the Devil's Gold in the Superstition Mountains in Arizona. A gold treasure that many have sought, and several died for, but none have ever found. Abby's map has others interested enough to break into her house looking for it.
Gage Logan is the head of Treasure Hunters Anonymous in the LoDo neighborhood of Denver. He has had a lot of success and has the wealth to prove it. Abby's grandfather spoke very highly of him, and she seeks him out to partner with her on the search for the Devil's Gold. Gage is intrigued, but he has a firm rule: no women on an expedition. He has his reasons, but Abby tells him: I go, or it's no go and I find someone else. When Abby shows him her map and a chunk of the gold, he's convinced. Gage still has his doubts, and he doesn't want to place another innocent woman in danger, but Abby has the fire and spirit to overcome his concerns. Not to mention the off the charts attraction simmering between them.
Their grueling trek into the Superstition Mountains is made even more dangerous because someone is following them. Using King's map they find the spot, but the journey to the gold is a long and winding path and it doesn't end in the Superstition Mountains and the passion between Gage and Abby is a danger all its own. 3 1/2-Stars
My thanks to Kensington, Publisher, and Kat Martin, author, for providing a complimentary digital Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) of this novel via NetGalley. This is my fair, honest and personal review. All opinions are mine alone and were not biased in any way.
This is a well-written, entertaining, steamy, romantic suspense novel. It has a brave, strong and capable female protagonist, adventure, intrigue, suspense, sizzling chemistry, relationship drama, twists and turns, and a happily ever after ending. I especially liked its message of following your dreams. This is the second entry in Ms. Martin's outstanding Blood Ties series, and it can be easily read and enjoyed as a stand alone. I am looking forward to reading the next entry in this series with great anticipation. Ms. Martin never disappoints her readers! NetGalley and Kensington Books kindly provided me with an ARC of this novel, and this is my honest opinion.
Sometimes I hate my OCD. Why the heck my brain doesn't understand that it ain't the end of the world if I don't finish a book. Why I have to torture myself? This whole book was torture. We have a hero with whom everyone fell in love and he's tortured by that. It's like the worst for him. His kind of girlfriend died on his watch. She was in love with him but he didn't return the feeling. And that's his troubled past. And why he doesn't do relationship. Boy imo you weren't doing relationship even thn. Stop blaming the girl. You're just a plain manwhore. Fucking accept it. He regret feeling anything for Abby cause she might die too. What do you want? A immortal girlfriend? Newsflash human being are mortal. Abby our heroin who knows her worth and refuse to be another of his many acquaintances. Next thing we know she's exactly that and she was the one pushing it. So much for your self worth. And what did she mean by not failing gage like Cassandra? How did Cassandra failed him? By dying? By falling in love with that asshole? By voicing her unrequired feeling? Which you also did at one point? How much low can you go. I just don't understand how the heck she fell in love with him. The only special something she get from him is sex. It was so frustrating. I threw the book away at page 376 when after all this she's the one chasing him again. He dumped your ass, cut you cold turkey have some self respect ffs. I can go on and on with how much I hated it but move on to the next point. You get news of your grandfather's death. Don't question how he died or where's his body? I don't know if it's a plot hole or what but it's another layer of stupidity. This book have lil bit of everything. Lemme mention some of them sexism, racism, problematic view of poor people and foreigners etc. So as I said, torture.

I know that Kat Martin is a veteran author of dozens of romantic suspense novels, but I haven’t read any of them, so I decided I’d jump in with The Last Mile, a story that promised to combine the excitement and danger of a hunt for lost treasure with a romance between an Indiana Jones-type seeker of lost artefacts and a young woman who has been left a treasure map by her late grandfather, also a famous treasure hunter. Well, the story delivered on the excitement and danger part and the plot is well put-together, if somewhat predictable. The romance, though? A total non-starter. There’s as much chemistry between the leads as between a pair of dead fish, and some of the pronouncements by the alpha male hero reminded me why I so rarely read m/f romance any more. And don’t get me started on the amount of mental lusting – it starts in the first chapter and Just Does Not Let Up. Ugh.
Abigail Holland is being targeted by someone out to gain possession of the map left her by her late grandfather – renowned explorer and treasure hunter King Farrell – that supposedly shows the location of two hundred million dollars’ worth of gold – Devil’s Gold – that King had spent the last ten years searching for. As it appears someone is willing to kill her to get hold of the map, Abby is more certain than ever that the gold actually exists, and has made the decision to finance an expedition to carry on King’s work and find it. To that end, she approaches Gage Logan, one of the founders of Treasure Hunter’s Anonymous, and asks him if he’ll take the job on. Gage is sceptical – most in the treasure hunting community had grown impatient with King Farrell’s obsession – but eventually signs up. He’s not keen on Abby going along for the ride – he doesn’t take his clients on jobs – but Abby tells him she’s going anyway, and that if he won’t take her, she’ll find someone else who will. Gage reluctantly agrees that she can accompany him.
The storyline here falls into two parts, the first in which Abby, Gage and his team travel to Arizona following the map; the second takes them to greater danger in Mexico with its corrupt officials and drug cartels who all want a piece of the action (or all of it!). It feels like your standard Hollywood adventure movie with plenty of action and really creaky dialogue, but it’s entertaining enough. For some reason, Ms. Martin decides to include a third PoV (a cartel boss) late on, which is jarring and pointless, and the book as a whole is over-long, with a final section that really isn’t necessary where, completely our of the blue, the author turns a bland bit-character into a villain.
The Last Mile is an easy read, and I enjoyed the amount of detail the author provides as to the various locations Gage and Abby travel to, and to their thought-processes as they work through their ideas, the clues they’ve been given and the information they glean from various sources. It’s clear that this treasure-hunting lark is something that requires a lot of skill and attention. But oh, dear, the romance is dreadful and both leads have come straight out of central casting. Gage is your typical tall, dark and handsome commitmentphobe wracked by guilt over something that was in no way his fault and who therefore Will Not Love; Abby is a bit of a loner who has “never lusted for a man before”, is determined to focus on finding the treasure and will Not Allow Herself To Be Distracted, so Gage – no matter his off-the-charts hotness – is off limits. Gage doesn’t sleep with clients and doesn’t get involved with anyone, ever. But Abby Is Not Like Other Women – and he decides that, okay, hands off while they’re out on the search, but once back in Denver, all bets are off:
“I’ve dreamed of having you naked and spread open beneath me, dreamed of being inside you. Now that I know that’s what you want too, I promise you it’s going to happen.”
because
“I’m what you need, and we both know it.”
Ugh. Surely I can’t be the only one rolling my eyes and banging my head on the desk reading that?
I’m sorry Ms. Martin, but ‘Me, Tarzan You, Jane’ pronouncements are no substitute for having actual chemistry between your principals and neither is being constantly bashed over the head with page after page filled with lustful thoughts. The physical attraction we’re constantly told exists between Gage and Abby is at the forefront of everything they say, think and do, but I finished the book having no idea why or how they fell in love.
In the end, The Last Mile is just about average. The predictablity of the plot together with two-dimensional characters and a boring romance that totally lacks sexual tension means I can’t recommend it.
An exciting romantic suspense, The Last Mile follows Abby Holland and Gage Logan as they hunt for a lost treasure worth hundreds of millions of dollars. When Abby inherits a map from her grandfather that could lead to immense wealth, Abby’s life becomes endangered. So, Abby hires Gage Logan, a respected explorer and treasure hunter to help her find The Devil’s Gold, a treasure her grandfather searched for for years.
Gage and Abby have an instant connection, but Gage learned from past mistakes never to mix business with pleasure. As their journey becomes increasingly dangerous, Gage and Abby must find the elusive Devil’s Gold, avoid the targets on their backs, deal with their ever-growing feelings, and redeem her grandfather’s good name?
This was an engaging and suspenseful read with great characters and a wonderful romance. I love romances with a treasure hunting component, and Abby and Gabe’s excursions are rife with adventure, danger, and passion. Abby and Gage go on an epic journey – think National Treasure with more romance!! Their journey is exciting and dangerous, as nature and man test them at every turn. It’s an intriguing adventure with many heart-pounding moments.
Gage and Abby make a good team. They are both independent, intelligent, and capable, and they work together well. Plus, they have amazing chemistry!! However, fears that stem from past tragedies and heartaches stop the couple from acting on their feelings, and they try to keep things strictly professional. Gage in particular has some guilt that haunts him and prevents him from committing to one person. Deep-seated fears limit his romantic relationships, and he has to face some of these issues if he wants a future with Abby.
Abby knows of Gage’s reputation with women and wants more than a fling. She also fears that she is putting his life in unnecessary danger, and though she has admired him for years, so hesitates to act on her impulses. Through it all, they are drawn to each other, and their relationship grows as they learn to trust and depend on each other. They are both layered characters, complex and dynamic, and their romance is filled with sexual tension, angst, and passion.
I also liked the secondary characters and am eager to learn more about several of them. Though several were protagonists in earlier books in the series, I have a feeling that several of Gabe’s other friends, brother, and colleagues will be the focus of future books in the series (fingers crossed!). I believe Gage’s brother Edge is the focus of the next story. He is an enigmatic character, and I can’t wait to read his story!
I’m enjoying this series, as I enjoy all of Martin’s books, and I like that, though the characters are connected, their journeys and situations are all unique. The stories are engaging, the characters are compelling, and the romances are fantastic!! The Last Mile is no exception. I’m so thankful to Kensington Books and NetGalley for providing me with a copy of the book, and I would definitely recommend it to readers of romance and romantic suspense.
Abby's will be looking for a treasure that her Grandfather left her when he passed away. She gets with another treasure hunter Gage. Love is in the air. I think every page had a reference to being hot and bothered by her or him. I know this author is a best seller but the sex got in the way of the story. This was an ARC book from NetGalley, the publisher is Kensington Books.
I was delighted to receive an advanced copy of Kat Martin’s, The Last Mile, Blood Ties #2, even though romance novels are not my favorite genre.
The tale is one of suspense and adventure taking readers from Denver to Arizona’s Superstition Mountains, to a hacienda in Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula.
In the first chapter, the protagonist, Abby Holland, is fighting off an assailant who wants the treasure map her grandfather, King Farrell, bequeathed to her in his will. King Farrell was a well-respected, treasure hunter. He had finally located the legendary Devil’s Gold. It was up to Abby to finish the hunt to preserve King Farrell’s reputation.
Anytime someone is chasing gold, other people will be after them and Abby Holland is no exception. Attackers turn up in almost every chapter—a cousin, a museum worker, a Mexican politician, the Mexican cartel, and a Mexican hacienda owner who had fallen on bad times. Almost half the characters in the novel are after Abby and the gold.
The romance part is when Abby hires Gage Logan to accompany her. He’s the “Indiana Jones” character of the story. A third of the novel is spent with the two lead characters trying to focus on finding the treasure. To do this, they must fight off their lust for each other. This is, of course, fails. Every time Abby moves a body part, Gage fights his inclination to grab her. The same is true of Abby. Everything Gage does turns her on.
Okay. I feel too much of the novel is devoted to the physical attraction between them. For instance, there are several parts in the saga where either Abby or Gage almost die. They are being chased by assassins. Instead of that being their primary focus, they are still wondering when’s the next time they can have sex. My point is, it’s overdone. If people are trying to kill you, that’s probably going to occupy your thoughts more than any physical attraction you have for your companion. It’s a survival instinct.
There are also some typos. Most of them involve Gage’s first name. Sometimes he’s called Gabe. One time he was called Gaze. Perhaps the author was considering naming the lead male character, Gabe, and then changed her mind. I’m not sure. It didn’t detract from the overall tale, except for the fact I had to go back and reread a few sentences to make sure the author wasn’t introducing a new character with a similar name.
There are other moments that made me pause such as, “Abby stared at the diamond spray of stars overhead.” I could picture gazing up at the stars in a desert sky and imagining they sparkled like diamonds. Maybe those moments are worth more than the gold Abby was chasing.
I also give the author credit for creating a female character who is as strong and determined as any of her male counterparts. She doesn’t quit or expect anyone to save her.
I’m certain that fans of Kat Martin’s other books will like this novel, too.
NOTE: A special thanks to Kensington Publishing & Between The Chapters Book Club for my advanced reader's copy.
I absolutely loved this book! It was exactly what I needed to get me past the book slump I have been in lately.
This book was fast paced, exciting characters, just an all around great read! I didn't know what to expect from one minute to the next, definitely had me on the edge of my seat.
This is book 2 in the series so now I am going to have to pick up Book 1 and see what I was missing! Will definitely recommend this to friends!
Well paced and high action, The Last Mile by Kat Martin doesn’t disappoint. I have not read the first book in the series and didn’t feel like I missed anything, so I’m confident in saying this works as a standalone.
The plot appeared basic in the beginning but as the story progressed layers built and it kept me engaged from start to finish.
What didn’t I like? The romance was a little too over handed and took away from the plot. The trope is overused and formulary in the genre.
Thank you to the publisher for sending me a copy to review.
Thank you to the author and the publisher, Kensington Books, for sharing with me an ARC of this amazing book through NetGalley!!!
Please note this is the second book in a series about the Logan brothers but you don’t need to read the first one to understand this one (although you should because they are amazing !!!!!)
“The gold was there. King knew it. Abby intended to find it.”
“Looks like we’ve got a deal - partner”
“He was Gage Logan. It was like superman was sleeping in her living room”
There are really not many words to describe this book … apart from amazing, great, mind blowing, breath taking!!! Fans of Indiana Jones and the Seventh Scroll this book is definitely for you!!!!! The disappearing of a grandfather who has just left a mysterious map to his granddaughter, in order to find the treasure I set his life on finding, with the help of an amazing, handsome treasure hunter ???? COUNT ME IN !!!! Adventure, treasure hunting, archaeology and romance … what more can you ask for?? Do you know what they are also some amazing romantic trope !!!!!! Like forced proximity, being forced to work together, and a slow burn with growing mutual attraction!!!! Abby and Gage are just the perfect couple, not just because of the spice of their scenes and their physical attraction. They’re great together because their story is about being partner before anything else !!!! That’s what you love !!! I know only read this book I devour it and I will never complain!! It was a spark of adrenaline. It felt like the excitement never stopped and there were twists and turns everywhere!!! I’m not going to lie the presence of a romantic theme between the main characters was definitely a plus but the main plot with the discovery of a secret treasure no one believed existed was definitely what drew me in !!! Please read this book because I swear you would never regret your decision!!! And, which is more, I can’t wait to read something about another Logan brother that really really has a promising story!!!!
“He wanted to make a story with Abigail Holland. He wanted to remember her naked in his bed, her golden red hair spread out on his pillow”
“King Farrell was no fool. And neither was his granddaughter.”
“… nothing, he vowed, was going to keep him from protecting Abigail Holland”
The Last Mile is the second book in the "The Logans" series. The series follows the three Logan brothers. This one is Gage's story. It works perfectly as a stand alone book. Some characters from the first book show up in this one, but, you don't really need to know any back story.
That being said, I enjoyed this one a bit more than the first one. It has a lot of action that starts fairly early on in the story. I loved the treasure hunt and adventure portion of the story. It was a lot of fun; full of danger and intrigue. I did figure one thing out early, but the rest was a surprise. As for the couple, I like both Abigail and Gage together and as separate characters. Gage held a lot of guilt and I was happy that Abby was able to make him see reason. Abby had a great head on her shoulders and she was a great match for Gage. It was just a fun romance all around. I highly recommend this one.
This Series Keeps getting better and better! Gage Logan. Lost items recovery and treasure hunter could go toe to toe with Indiana Jones! Danger surrounding his current client brings up old trauma and adds to his determination not to fall in love. But Abby doesn't make it easy! Love their journey, how close proximity and challenges as they hunt for the Devil’s Gold and her desire to restore her grandfather’s name build a strong relationship between and make it impossible to deny emotions and attraction. Even if he knows they are perfect together, getting passed the guilt he carries to make it last is one major conflict that stands between them. Lots of action, so many greedy factions drooling after the possibility of the gold, willing to kill for it, along with the Dangerous terrain, keep the pages turning! After the reunion of the Logan Brothers in book 1 and their appearances in book 2 I'm more than excited for Edge's book, One Last Chance!
It's no secret that I love books with Uncharted vibes. There's just something about a roguish treasure hunter teaming up with a smart woman and fighting off enemies together to save the day. I'm happy to say that this book delivered. Gage had MAJOR Nathan Drake vibes and Abby definitely had vibes of Elena Fisher.
Abby, who has just inherited a map from her grandfather that supposedly leads to $200 million in gold, teams up with Gage, who owns a treasure hunting business(!). Normally, Gage does not bring civilians with him, but Abby insists and the two follow the map while fending off enemies who want the fortune for themselves. They become very much a team which I liked. Abby wasn't a damsel in distress, but was more than able to hold her own.
This is described as an adventure romance, and while I love stories like this, the romance felt a liiiitle instalovey to me. Both Gage and Abby are instantly attracted to each other. I would have liked a slower burn buildup, but that's just me. I also could have done without Abby drooling over Gage's biceps and abs every five seconds. But those are minor things. Overall, I really enjoyed this one and I would definitely recommend it to those who enjoy adventure romance.
Another good one in the series. Typical Martin details (which is why I'm a fan of the writer): great characters, captivating story sexual chemistry build-up romance suspense mystery some humor
I liked the characters. Enjoyed the story but it did take a few pages for me to get into it. The suspense/plot builds up over the course of the narrative until you reach the exciting conclusion. I liked the supporting characters as well. Martin does a great job of just enough character development for them that you want to see what happens with them as well.
I look forward to Edge's story next. Or perhaps Jack Foxx? Either way, I'll continue reading this writer & this series.
I came back a couple days later to be mad about more stuff - my new additions are in italics lol.
Couple things we need to get out of the way - Martin loves writing an absolutely incompetent and stupid heroine. Non stop incompetence, she goes from stumbling into a rattlesnake and shrieking to falling down a tunnel to being able to offer absolutely nothing of any worth to the expedition except stubbornness. I cannot believe our main dude would want to bring her along on other expeditions. she's pathetic. I'm sorry but I cannot be cool with a woman who literally doesn't handle a damn thing. she shrieks, she screams, she's so damn naive that it is EXHAUSTING. I will never understand authors who decide to write a romance where one of our mains goes from one "I need a hot man to save me" moment and then literally repeat this every other page. main man never needs her to save him of course. then we end up in a situation where he's all sad and traumatized blah blah blah because he had a past girl die on an expedition. and its like he's right. you shouldn't be on this trip, you don't know how to do anything
Our main man is of course competent, ruggedly handsome and has jealousy red flags sprinkled every where.
Sprinkle in some racism, lots of thoughts on corrupt southern American governments with plenty of impoverished people (but do they give any of the poor the treasure that belongs to them over our two mains?) absolutely not. so much racism, from an Indigenous "tracker" stereotype, to a poor Mexican community, to plenty of white saviorism, to lots of gross "darker skinned men panting after our pale skinned princess
That and the reference to snow skiing really had me screaming internally. I cannot handle snow skiing as a thing. NO ONE SAYS THAT IN DENVER. these people apparently grew up in Colorado. I understand there are regional differences to things (though ive spent a lot of time on the east coast with people who ski and have never heard it referred to as snow skiing) but OH MY GOD I CANT
It was fun during the treasure hunt but I can’t help but feel like the last 50-100 pages could’ve been shortened without the drama between Gage & Abby. This is my first “treasure hunt” focused book and it was quite an adventure! I liked the fast pace. Specially leading up to and during the finding of the treasure.
I wish King’s exit was a bit more intimate and detailed. And I despised the whole Gage / Cassandra tragedy. Gage, please get over it. It wasn’t your fault. Goddamn it.
I felt like I was watching one of those 1.5 hour movie starring some popular actor/actress combo where they have a clear goal in mind - where their adventure is the whole plot of the movie. Anyway it was a solid 3 star read for me!
Lara Croft, move over because Abigail Holland is on a treasure trail. This second book in the Blood Ties series keeps the pace fast and intense. There is a race to find a hidden treasure of un-imaginable amounts of gold. I love a good treasure hunt book with action, betrayal, and a major payload. This story delivers all and more.

With spot-on pacing, this romantic thriller has all the hallmarks of a great summer read: fast-moving and fun with equal amounts of sexual tension and suspense. It’s the second in Martin’s Blood Ties (The Logans) series but can be read independently.
Kat Martin's books are always fast pace adventures with morally strong, brave, smart, skilled and of course handsome characters. Most of the the books I have read, one of the main characters was a body guard, protecting a client or friend. But this one is totally different, as both main characters are looking for adventure and deliberately head into danger, which I had a hard time relating to, but still, they checked all of the characteristics that I listed above.
Abigail Holland was very close to and admired her grandfather, treasure hunter King Farrell. She is devastated when she is informed by his lawyer that he died and left her his house or his treasure map, but she had to chose which. She chose to sell the house to pay for the exploration to find The Devil’s Gold. He had hinted that she should hire renowned explorer and treasure hunter Gage Logan. Because of the lost of a previous client, Gage is very reluctant to let Abby to come along, but she makes it clear that if he doesn't, she will find someone else to guide her. There are several attempted assaults on Abby, so he moves her into his apartment, while they prepare their quest, both fighting the strong chemistry between them, but they must remain professional, right? lol
This is a page turning adventure, because one adventure morphs into another and we meet Edge, Gage's other brother, hero of the next book (?) and the woman that he is interested in. Note like I did that Abby never seemed to have questioned the lack of King's body.
I read an ARC offered n NetGalley.com. This is my unbiased and voluntary review.
WELL, hell. I wasn't aware that this was going to be a romance novel. It wasn't that bad but certainly reminded me of some B grade movies I have seen, Raiders of the Lost Ark, but more of a Lara Croft: Tomb Raider kind of book.
The book was supposed to be suspenseful, but really it was just entertaining. The main character, Abigail Holland is a young woman who was left a treasure map by her grandfather. He had been a famous treasure hunter, but not good enough to find the treasure. But she takes the map to a "real treasure hunter" Gage, who is a hunk (you expected that).
The evil treasure map-stealing group tries several times to steal the map and threatens to kill everyone. There is whip snapping and fist flying and bada bing bada boo and the treasure is theirs! This was a simple, predictive read and I sort of enjoyed it. I skipped the girl misunderstands boy and they tussle stuff that is required in romance novels... all the stupid things that men are supposed to say, stuff like gonna rock your world all night long... you know...
In the end, it was a less-than-average read for me, but I am out of my genre so if you love that type of romance novel, this might set your blood on fire. I was thinking the whole book that it would be a great b movie!
Gage and Abby definitely kept me guessing along the way. Would they find that which her grandfather left clues for? Would they find forever with each other? Heck, would they even survive this adventure? From Denver to Arizona to Mexico, we followed them through danger and lust and greed and maybe even love. But when all seems to finally fall into place, another wrench is thrown and everything turns upside down.
I enjoyed Gage and couldn’t even be too angry at his reluctance to let his heart get involved. Abby had to remain a job and partner, but he couldn’t feel for her. He couldn’t love her. Not after what he’s been through. But Abby wasn’t weak. She wasn’t some sad little girl who would be content with throwaway affection and some time that made her toes curl when she could have love. And I loved her for not compromising or shying away from that. So she was the stronger of the two in my eyes. Sure, they saved each other a time or two, but Abby laid it all out there for Gage to take or break her heart and she didn’t regret it, even if it had the potential to blow up in her face. It’s a good thing Gage has some reason somewhere in his family tree to help him figure out what he truly wants, too. Because I worried a bit there.
But thanks to this story, the adventure of a lifetime for more than one person, and the prospect of a better life, everyone wound up exactly as they should have. New friends had a future, new loves had happiness, and maybe Edge will have a story to tell of his own soon enough.
Abigail (Abby) Holland inherited her grandfather's Victorian home and a map of a treasure better known as The Devil's Gold. King Farrell was once a great treasure hunter, but rumors circulate that he was insane. Abby knows better!
She believes that her grandfather found the gold and the map will lead her to it. She just needs help from Gage Logan, whom her grandfather spoke highly of. Gage is not just good at what he does, but he's also a known womanizer, never staying too long with one woman.
Gage believes that he is the reason for others being hurt on his watch, and although the chemistry between him and Abby is off the charts, Gage has rules. Although one rule about Abby staying behind is broken when she refuses.
As the two form a partnership to seek the gold, they find themselves battling more than just the weather elements, and somewhere along the lines the rules stop applying but can Gage stop battling himself when their partnership ends?
I enjoyed the fast-paced mystery of seeking a buried treasure of gold and the dangerous element involved not just with the hunt for treasure but the encounters Abby was met with. It kept me guessing who was behind it. There's a surprise reveal for Abby and the near ending caught me off guard. I wanted to wring Gage's neck because I didn't think he was being reasonable with his self-assessments. I found this to be an entertaining read!
I requested & received an ARC from NetGalley via Kensington Books and I have voluntarily reviewed this book.
I didn't realize this was part of a series, but no worries, it worked well as a standalone.
Abigail Holland has a treasure map and the drive to find the treasure her grandfather never found. She enlists the help of Gage Logan (what a name! Seriously, I wanted to call him Logan Gage the entire book because that name didn't work for me). He's an adventurer who's been treasure hunting before.
There's an instant attraction here that they let simmer for a while, which was really great. The search for the gold is fraught with thieves and cartels and just about anyone who knew King Farrell knew about the Kings Gold so there are lots of suspects.
Gage has some baggage from a past expedition that keeps Abby at arms length, even though he really wants her. He just can't give up some idiotic sense of blame for his past, which keeps him from having a future. Abby shows she's the one who really has the spine with this couple, and I loved her for that.
Overall, a fun treasure hunt and a alpha romance with a dash of vulnerability, and it was all good. Looking forward to the next Logan brother's story.
Book two in the series sees Gage Logan, second son and treasure seeker, meet his mate and match in this story filled with secrets, adventure, gold, and romance. Will Logan find the treasure Abigail Holland believes is out there or give up on the incredulous myth he believes it probably is to explore further?
What I liked: * Abbigail Holland: strong, resilient, intelligent, loving, kind, sensual, and her grandfather’s only hope of proving he has truly found a lost reassure of Gold…she is also kind of taken by Gage Logan * Gage Logan: treasure seeker, brother, gorgeous, has women flocking to him, interested in Abbigail but also doesn’t mix business with pleasure…usually… * Seeing the brothers of Gage again…Kade from book one and Edge (probably in book two) * The fast pace * The US and south of the border settings * The mystery and myth and more * That there was more than one baddie * The chemistry between Abby and Gage * Mateo: great addition to the team…wonder if he will show up again * Knowing there is another book (at least) in the series to look forward to * All of it really except…
What I didn’t like: * Exactly who and what I was meant not to like * Thinking about how greed, corruption, and evil is so prevalent in the entire world and the impact it has on all of us
Did I enjoy this book? Yes Would I read more in the series? Yes
Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington Books for the ARC – This is my honest review.
This is book 2 of the Blood Ties series and the third book of the series and is an exciting romantic suspense by Kat Martin. The Last Mile follows Abby Holland and Gage Logan as they hunt for a lost treasure worth a fortune based on a clue her grandfather left her. Gage and Abby have instant chemistry but he learned long ago to separate business and pleasure and keeps his distance as much as possible even as the danger level in their expedition increases. The couple are well suited and likeable even if they find reasons to avoid each other. Gage has some relationship baggage and Abby is aware of his reputation, but they are drawn to each other. Their characters are complex, passionate and compelling and the storyline is riveting and engaging. The other characters in the book are also fascinating and I hope they will re-appear in their own books. Great story that keep the reader engaged in the adventure. Thank you to the publisher, author and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Who doesn't love a treasure hunt? A treasure hunt with danger, action, and a steamy romance? What's not to like? I like how Martin's romance novels have a lot going on besides just the romance. I'm not a huge reader of romance novels but the occasional one thrown in the mix is fun. This checks that box as well as providing an intriguing mystery, and the added bonus of taking place (partly) in my hometown, Denver.
This series involves 3 brothers (and their friends) with each book focusing on a different brother/friend as they all find love. It can absolutely be read as a standalone. This one follows Abby who is left a treasure map by her well-known treasure hunting grandfather. She is determined to find this last treasure, his white whale, but she needs help. Cue professional treasure hunter, Gage Logan. Together they track down The Devil's Gold and find love along the way.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Kensington Books for providing me with an advanced copy of The Last Mile in exchange for my honest review.
