The perfect meet-cute and then fall madly in love...That was how it was supposed to happen. Too bad I was the only that followed the plan. It was fine. I'd completely moved past the man. At least until he walked into my office on Monday morning.
Summer Dowell is a romantic comedy author on the side of her main gig which is being mom to her six children. She is obsessed with reading and creating stories in her free time. Her most noted other skills include making a mean peanut butter and jelly sandwich and doing massive loads of laundry. Summer holds a bachelors degree in Business Marketing from Brigham Young University. She currently resides with her family in Southern California.
I own this collection, but didn't finish all the stories in it and I got this one from subscribing to the author's newsletter. It totally hit the spot! I was having a hard day and it made me smile, laugh, cringe with secondhand embarrassment, and swoon. Summer Dowell knows how to write a sweet, hilarious, and engaging romcom. I only wish it was longer because the ending came way too fast and I wasn't ready to say goodbye.
STOP! Stop. STOP! That was the cutest novella and I’m SO glad I picked it up this evening! It was the perfect little pick me up.
I loved the office romance! And the running trail scene! 🤣
The characters were great! I almost wish this had been a full length novel, just so we could’ve gotten more of them. BUT! It was the perfect length in my eyes!
Looked like my perfect Hallmark-style meet-cute with true love wasn’t happening today.
I was just considering backtracking when certain male runner in a certain black shirt turned his head toward me. I did the only thing a sane person could do in this situation. I dove headlong into the trees.
And then he winked at me. He winked. No wonder girls were throwing themselves at him. It was winks like that that made them believe he wanted to pursue something more than friendship. How dare he wink at me, then expect me not to get heart palpitations that would make any cardiologist nervous.
The perfect meet-cute and then fall madly in love…That was how it was supposed to happen. Too bad I was the only one that followed the plan. It was fine. I’d completely moved past the man. At least until he walked into my office on Monday morning.
Sweet and definitely too short. I felt like the ending was abrupt. I would have loved to see a kissing scene. But it was still a sweet novella. 3.75 stars.

Reader’s Notes:
– this story was originally in the limited release romantic comedy collection Love, Laughter and Happily Ever After
– this is told from Hazel and Owen’s points of view
Review:
I really liked that Hazel was so awkward! She tried so hard to create different plans when it came to Owen, but no matter what Hazel did she just couldn’t get it all right 😂. And Owen being blind to what the women who he interacted with thought his different mannerisms was cool to see, especially since it was a close friend/family member to point it out to him. Plus he chose to take what they said and be more conscious of his actions to not encourage anyone he saw to think the wrong thing based on his actions. 🥰
Hazel likes to run on a popular trail everyday and has noticed the past couple of days that someone new, and attractive, has been running the same trail. After studying his trail habits, she comes up with a plan for the perfect meet-cute. Well, perfect until she sees him with another woman and embarrasses herself by hiding when they come near. But there’s no way she’ll see him again, right?
Wrong. In fact, Owen (the planned meet-cute participant) will be working with Hazel in the same office starting the very next day. And while he does not want to be in a relationship after his last disaster, he can’t seem to keep himself from spending time with and messing with Hazel.
With a charity event coming up, both wish the other would want the other as their date. But neither are ready to place their hearts on the line when they aren’t sure how the other feels.
Good thing they picked such great dates to accompany them instead😉.
Such a cute novella! It was such an intruiging read for a novella, packing in a whole range of emotions (the secondhand embarassment was strong with this one -- how did Summer Dowell come up with that trail running scene?!).
I loved the way that this followed the beginning arc of a romance without trying to do more than was possible within the length constraints.
The dialogue (both internal and between characters) was so witty! I especially loved the "I don't want to kill him [the roly-poly]" line and the 'insides-melting-like-pizza-cheese' lines.
My first read by Summer Dowell, but I'm intrigued enough to seek out more!
I just picked up this book for free the other day. I don't know where and start reading and realized I knew the story already. It is in a book set I bought a while ago. I liked the story so much I read it again and had many good laughs a second time. Hazel's meet-cute was such a disaster! I agree with Melody that the end was too quick. It should have had a least one kiss.
Cute story. Silly people need better communication. The “meet-cute” was pretty hilarious and I could see it in my mind in movie form. It was a great first chapter. I totally pictured the hilarious scene in movie form in my mind. Only issue with the story was a couple of the similes just stuck out as weird and unnecessary. I loved the internal dialogue. It was amusing. New to me author
This is the 1st book I read by Summer 🌞 Dowell. I enjoyed this book's storyline. This story made me laugh 😂. I really liked Hazel's character. I really liked Owen's character. I really liked the ending.
Read to try out the author's writing. The writing was not bad. The characterizations were a bit silly and flat, and the plot wasn't much to write home about either, but I might give this author another try if I see a book with a more interesting synopsis.
Good until the last scene where they started dancing. The story was witty, funny. Quip after funny quip. No exotic kisses. They had a boring confessional conversation during their dance and then scene ended there. Oof.
Oh my gosh I laughed so much-that opening scene was great! 🤣 I’m still giggling through the unexpected wit and humor and unfortunate events. Excellent story!
This book has the most awkward, funny opening scene. It’s not quite a meet-cute, but kinda is. But oh man, I was laughing out loud cuz it’s something I would probably do myself!
And the laugh out loud, hilariously awkward situations don’t stop there! You’ve gotta love working in a small office and all the funny things that can happen when you are trying to be unnoticed and just playing it cool.
Summer does such a fantastic job writing a lovely, concise, rom-com that will leave you satisfied, but also craving more.
Such a fun, cute, clean Rom-Com that you can read in a couple hours. If you have ever tried to meet someone by literally running into them, or if you’ve ever been locked in a closet at work, you will be able to relate to Hazel. And if men are really as swoony as Owen, and also as clueless about that fact as he is, that’s just not fair!!
Thank you to @summers_pen for the advanced copy of this novella. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Content: nothing bad, just awkward situations Romance: nice and clean, with a heart thumping almost kiss! 😘
