When I saw this book on whatever sale day I got if from, it was the 'Medeiros' that made me click buy faster than I could finish reading the full name.
I'm not certain I ever recovered from that disappointment, so take that into consideration when you read this... review? diatribe? ・ ・ ・ ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 🕮⋆˚࿔✎𓂃 𝐣𝐨𝐢𝐧 𝐦𝐲 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐦𝐲 𝐟𝐮𝐥𝐥 𝐫𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰 ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Sarah Mapleton must marry to save her family from poverty. Her father has drank and gamble all of there money away. Now her father is in deep debt. Sarah's long time love interest breaks off with her because of her father is in deep debt and she has no dowry. Sarah vows never to trust a man with her love again.
James Hathaway has recently been entitled to Viscount. He has become one of the richest men in England. His uncle has died with no male issue. Once he meets Sarah he wants her to be his wife. So he makes a deal with her father to pay off his debts so he can marry Sarah. I wish there was more about how they first met.
This is truly a marriage of convenience. James tried hard to make Sarah love him . They have a successful marriage bed. The sex scenes were vague and not well done. To Vague like gaps were missing in the sex scenes. I think the author might be a little shy about writing sex scenes. There were also, gaps in the story. Like Sarah would be on her way to visit her in laws and the next scene would be her back at the manor. What happen to her visit!! Weird!!
But I really did enjoy the story of how these two strangers build there martial relationship and trust and love. This was a very good story overall.
I am amazed by the depth of this novella - it is a very emotional and well written story that encompasses the wedding and the first year of marriage between Sarah Mapleton and James, Viscount Hathaway.
Sarah doesn't want to marry James, but to save her mother and brother, she agrees. She has been burned by love and vows to keep her heart safe.
James has wanted Sarah since the first time he saw her, he knows that she was (and may still be) in love, but he hopes to win her for himself. He also knows that she didn't want to marry him, but he paid off her father's debts and she really had no choice. But he has hope that he can win her heart.
This is such an incredible book, it has a lot going on, but it always stays on point and reads like a full length novel. For a short book, it has a little of everything - insecurity, misunderstanding, jealousy, really steamy love scenes, family and finally soulmate type love. There is no way for me to write an in-depth review without spoilers, so just lets leave it at this - READ THE BOOK!!
This is the second book in the series, but it can easily be read as a stand alone title with no problems.
*I am voluntarily leaving a review for an eARC that was provided to me by NetGalley and the publisher*
Sarah Mapleton cannot believe her wedding day has arrived. Unfortunately, it is not to the man she had long expected to marry. Since Sarah's father gambled away her dowry, she is forced to marry a stranger, Viscount James Hathaway. Sarah is unsure of her marriage, but feels she must give it a chance.
James knows Sarah was all but engaged to marry another. Still, he has high hopes for their marriage. Ever since he saw her, he has wanted her. There is just something so unique and different about her. James plan on winning Sarah over with kindness and patience. He is certainly smitten. Can Sarah return his affections?
I love, love, love author Suzanna Medeiros. She never fails to capture her audience. Ms. Medeiros skill with a pen is visible all throughout her latest addition to THE HATHAWAY HEIRS series, LORD HATHAWAY'S NEW BRIDE. She has an eye for detail and her characters always have such depth to them. It is a breath of fresh air seeing the man taking a chance on love... even though it is one-sided at first. James is such a gentleman, giving Sarah the time and tender care he does. Their story is very read-worthy. I look forward to reading more of THE HATHAWAY HEIRS series. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars!
"James knew she only accepted his suit because her father had pressed her to." Not a great way to start a marriage but it was more of one of convenience was it not? James had inherited the title of Viscount Hathaway unexpectedly and the one good part was he now was able to marry Sarah because of that fact. Sarah on the other hand had grown up seeing how unhappy her parents had been and really had no intention of putting herself in that position ever. But as fate would have it, her parents and brother need money and she had the means to help them. This is a heartwarming story with several twists and both James and Sarah trying to make their marriage work. Sometimes the unexpected can happy and who knows? They might fight love!
The story starts on the wedding day of Sarah and James Hathaway. Sarah is marrying a stranger because her parents need the money and her father has gambled away her dowry. She’s miserable and fearful of their wedding night. James is infatuated with her and goes about initiating Sarah to their marital bed in the best way possible. They have no problems in bed but out of it they make only small efforts to connect. Despite this, they grow to care for each other but insecurities, past hurts and lack of confidence keeps them apart.
Throughout the story, the author conveys the emotions of the two characters so well that I was thoroughly engaged. The few sex scenes were lovely and well done. There were a few pages I was impatient with Sarah and James' inability to be honest with each other. I also would have liked to have read more about them getting to know each other outside the bedroom: sharing stories of childhood, books/music they enjoyed, etc. Overall a very good historical romance.
❤️❤️❤️❤️ 💋💋 The newest Of relationships is strained when you believe your wife still loves her former beau , but what if your wrong and your the one she has feelings for . The husband you have is not the one you wanted a year ago , but he seems to care , you won’t ever love again , or maybe it will creep up on you when you least expect. A great story of new marriage and the learning of each other , it’s never easy when your old love is still on the scene . I really enjoyed this book. Tender at times and tense at others . Lovely. I dare you not to fall for James , broody but wonderful hero . I received an advanced copy of this book and chose to submit a review
I will say I enjoyed the writing style and I liked the characters well enough. I think I would have rated this higher had it been a full blown novel and the author really allowed the characters to grow and really develop their love story more. The novel spans months with time jumps, but I think this novel had potential to go deeper into the romance between Sarah and James. A lot of reviewers thought there was plenty of development here for a novella, and I agree to an extend, but I still wanted more.
But, very worth my time reading and again I liked the writing style of the author.
Sarah married James reluctantly, and while she connected strongly with him on a physical level that's all there was to their relationship for her, for months on end. When James finds her alone with her former love Robert twice and gets angry about it, instead of being honest with him and explaining that she wants nothing to do with Robert, she says, "If you're worried about your heir, you needn't be. I know my duty and I'll make sure I'm with child before I look elsewhere." What a charmer! 🙄
We're told later in the book that she falls in love with her husband, but I never felt it.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I really enjoyed this one! It was a little different for me because in this story it is the female lead who is protecting her heart from getting hurt again and is very determined not to fall in love with him. Loved all the angst!
Lord Hathaway’s New Bride by Suzanna Medeiros is book Two in the Hathaway Heirs series. This is the story of Sarah Mapleton and James, Viscount Hathaway. I haven't yet read the previous book but so for me this was a standalone book. Sarah doesn't want to go through a heartbreak so she guards her heart with all her strength...and doesn't plan to change that when she has to marry James. But Sarah starts to learn quickly that James has a way of getting her to put her guard down...and now it may be to late to protect her heart. James has wanted Sarah from the first moment he met her and if he has to burn through her guard with passion to get to his most wanted prize from her he will. Enjoyed reading their story and hope to read more books from this author soon.
THE HATHAWAY HEIRS SERIES Book 1 - Lady Hathaway's Indecent Proposal Book 2 - Lord Hathaway's New Bride Book 3 - The Captain's Heart
An unusual but fascinating start to a story. It begins with a wedding! Sarah Mapleton has entered into a marriage of convenience story with Viscount James Hathaway, for her mother and brother’s sake. Her father has gambled away her dowry and she fears that her brother will have no money left in the estate, without the support of a wealthy husband. Sarah soon finds herself captivated by her husband but is reluctant to tell him of her feelings; James believes that Sarah loves another and that he is not enough for her. Their misunderstanding threated a marriage with so much potential. The story gradually unfolds, with James doing his best to captivate Sarah. A well written story that I wished was slightly longer, with two great characters. I received an advanced review copy from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
At novella length, Lord Hathaway's Bride is chocked full of passion, emotion and realistic characters. It begins and Sarah and James' wedding. Sarah is reluctant to wed after having her heart broken and James is triumphant to finally have the woman he wanted as his wife. They may be married but will it be happy? After an incident on their wedding day, James is resigned to the fact that Sarah isn't ready to give her heart to him and may never be ready. James makes Sarah's heart pound when they are together and never believes there will be anything more than passion between them. Most novellas barely skim the surface of a couple's emotional and physical connection, but this one is different. There was no shortage of emotions, passion and character building. Highly recommended for historical romance lovers, very good story, lots of passion and realistic, relatable characters.
What a perfectly lovely little book! I have many books by this author, but this is the first of hers I've read. Now I'm thrilled I have more. Usually in romances you have the falling in love first, and then marriage. Here the marriage comes first, which gives this story a nice twist. If you haven't read book one in this series, don't fret. This one totally stands alone. I loved the slow building of the romance between James and Sarah. At times I wanted to holler at them for their misunderstandings, but it eventually made the story all the sweeter. But not too sweet....there is definitely is some wonderful steam! Don't miss this one.
I received a copy of this book courtesy of NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are entirely my own.
I liked this book for the most part, but I never fully understood why he wanted to marry her so bad when she was obviously against it. Some of the misunderstandings also got a little old. Not sure if I’ll read the next book in the series but it’s on my list.
The Hathaway’s Heir series by Suzanna Medeiros, I had the opportunity to read the first book two months ago under The Novellas (A Collection) anthology. Lord Hathaway’s New Bride is the second instalment of this series. It follows the life of newly married Lord James Hathaway and her unwilling bride, Sarah Mapleton. Like any other marriage in this period, their relationship was shaky and uncertain. It will take as much time for the heartbroken Sarah Mapleton to trust and love another, as Lord James Hathaway configures his life as a Viscount. But James who fell in love at first sight desires Sarah the most. From this point onward, it was endearing to see their relationship built up and aches as much when incidents that follow up could easily prick their insecurities.
Sarah Mapleton is your common filial daughter who is also kind, caring, and a little stubborn. This can be seen by how she wholeheartedly agrees to marry someone she knew little of yet for love of her only young brother and mother, especially to clear the debts her gambler father accumulate so far, that she felt compelled to. As her character progressed, I see many qualities in her aside from what I mentioned above and some negativity as well. But that, I believe, would turn out before the story ended.
Lord James Hathaway, if I may say, he is an understanding man and firm in his judgement. He understood very well that their relationship still new and was not pushy. Yet he knew what he wanted, and tried as he could to make their relationship progressed. But among all, there seemed insecurities that lie underneath that understanding exterior in which plays most part in the overall story. That is my first impression for the first few chapters, thus certainly as story progressed, it will bloom rightly so. It took merely an hour or so by the time I finish this book. By now, I am fond of the writing style of Suzanna Medeiros as I had read several works of hers. It flows well and not at all awkward. Each of her characters was endearing and lovely as much as frustrating, that is on behalf of the antagonist.
The progress of each story was, in my opinion, carefully build up. But there is something that is missing that I fear I cannot give full 5 star rating. Oh, right, yes. It was heartfelt and lovely, but insecurity and presumptions play many parts as well in this story. I understand in this period that one marries another for many things, but rarely for love. In this book, it is said that they barely know each other at the earliest of their marriage. When I found little evidence of these two trying to get to know each other, it is a little disappointing. I would love to read more of their time together.
Nevertheless, as it is already such a lovely story with blossoming passion between these two, I do not regret reading and enjoying this book. I am inclined to read more of Suzanna Medeiros works. Historical romance is just right up my cup of tea! So before I finished this review, anyone who loves historical romance above the age of 18 will find this book as enjoyable as I do. It scored 4 out of 5 stars in my reading satisfaction.
Disclaimer: I voluntarily read and review a copy of this book via Netgalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I enjoyed this short novel. Hw a marriage of convenience started for Sarah Mapleton when she was broken-hearted by someone she loved & believed was going to marry. She decides to Marry the intriguing Viscount James Hathaway. Though she will keep her heart locked for her own protection. She vows to protect her heart at all costs.
Started with to people not knowing each other before becoming betrothed. Then getting to know each other in the marital bed. Though, Sarah realizes she just might have feelings for her husband. Could she be falling in love with her new husband? However, the new couple falls into some misunderstandings created by the past beau & jealousy. Which makes for the newlywed couple to be estranged for several months. During this time Sarah finds herself pregnant.
James Hathaway the new Viscount by a resent inheritance has loved Sarah from afar. He is determined to win her heart once they are married. James does just that... the passion, but he doesn't believe Sarah loves him. She is just doing her wifely duties to create an Heir. Wait! was Sarah is pregnant? Was this before we got married? Now that James knows that his EX wants her to have extramarital activities, James believes his wife is doing just that. Unfortunately, the doesn't allow Lady Sarah to confirm or deny the allegations. James just gets jealous & stays estranged from his wife. James is just broken-hearted over the outcome of his marriage. Or what he believes is happening in his marriage.
Lady Sarah has fallen in love with her husband & isn't given the chance to tell him. She has never felt this way about her past (so-called love) The passion, desire & ecstasy that James has given her is what Sarah needed in her life. Not to mention a kind, caring, considerate gentleman. Sarah realizes this is what love is. Unfortunately, due to the Lies, lack of communication, jealousy Lady Sarah believes her Viscount has a mistress. He is never home, & when he is he stays away from her at all cost. The newlyweds finally get thru one hurdle- when they communicate that Sarah has never been with another man, let alone pregnant prior to their wedding. James is just thrilled & believes they can start a life together. Until something happens with the baby. James decides he must pull away from his wife to protect the child. Well, a lady's emotions during pregnancy can give many different interpretations of something that is going on? Or the fact that nothing is going on. Now Sarah is jealous & believes her Ladies Maid is having an affair with her husband. She catches her husband semi-dressed & the maid has gone into his chambers. What is a wife to do? Everything that Sarah was afraid of happening is occurring. She has allowed her husband in her loving heart; now James has cracked it right open & broken it into a million little pieces. Can they win each other's hearts? Can Sarah find the truth & then have her husband provide the pleasures he has provided when creating their child together. Read & find out what happens to Lady Sarah & her handsome husband Viscount James Hathaway!
3.25 stars A short and sweet romance; nothing too profound or complex. Felt more like a novella than a full-length romance. Sarah is forced by her parents to marry James, because James will take her without a dowry and pay off all of her father’s debts, which are numerous. James has wanted Sarah since first meeting her, though she was indifferent to him, not least because she was already understood to have an agreement with a neighbor, Robert. Robert casts her aside when he finds out about her father’s debts though, and she’s left heartbroken and determined to never trust another man (so sick of that trope, for both the hero and heroine).
James and Sarah have a strong physical connection from the beginning and despite their lack of intimacy outside the bedroom, inside it things go quite smoothly. James is uncertain in his new position as viscount and knows about the prior connection between Sarah and Robert and due to some misunderstandings, comes to believe his wife is still in love with him. Sarah, for her part, acts a little stupidly sometimes and doesn't try enough to set things right between them.
Much of the complication stemmed from misunderstandings, which are among my least favorite thing in romance books. Well I guess in all books, but they're more of an issue in romances than others.
Overall an inoffensive romance that I could take or leave.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for an ARC of this book!
Lord Hathaway's New Bride by Suzanna Medeiros is a sweet Regency Romance ...I have read many books written by Suzanna & would like to say she doesn't disappoint her readers ... her writing is simple & uncomplicated ... All her stories r very well written , characters strong , concepts though predictable clear ... Her stories r all straightforward ,a no nonsense attitude still they some how touch your heart ... I have always loved her books & they are a quick read ...
This book is about James who has inherited the title of Viscount Hathaway unexpectedly and Sarah who her parents and brother need money and she had the means to help them. This is a heart warming Marriage of Convenience story where through many misunderstandings, insecurities, misconceptions ,circumstances both James & Sarah try to make there marriage work ...
I loved the character of James who is so humble ,modest & understanding .... also the book is not lengthy or descriptive so if u like a sweet, cozy Regency Romance this is the book for u ...i recommend it is at least a once read...
Sarah Mapleton has already had her heart broken once. When she finds herself compelled to marry the intriguing new Viscount Hathaway so that her father’s debts will be settled, she vows to protect her heart at all costs. After unexpectedly inheriting his uncle’s title, James Hathaway discovers that the one thing he wants above all else is Sarah. He hopes to win her love, but until that happens, he vows to have her passion. A marriage of convenience or so it would seem but James loves Sarah. Sarah soon realises she’s fallen in love with James but there are misunderstandings & circumstances that mar the way to their HEA. A well written, charming book which I read in two sittings, the characters are well fleshed & likeable, both James & Sarah are insecure each thinking that they aren’t good enough for each other. They are just starting to have the hope of a happy marriage when misunderstandings come thick & fast & neither will broach the subject. I look forward to more books in the series
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
I received a copy of this book to read from NetGalley in exchange for a fair review. Lord Hathaway’s New Bride is the second book in Suzanna Medeiros’s Hathaway Heirs series. This sweetly steamy novella (120 pages) about a marriage between strangers that grows into something more. Having been disappointed by both her father and the man she thought she was going to marry, as well as being witness to her parents unhappy marriage, Sarah Mapleton enters into marriage with Viscount James Hathaway with a great deal of trepidation a determination to protect herself from further heartache. James Hathaway never expected to inherit his uncles title and struggles to adjust to his new position in life. The one thing he does know is that he wants Sarah and hopes that despite their rocky start they can make a true marriage. This book can be read as a standalone but Suzanna Medeiros writes enjoyable stories so I would recommend reading them all. Published on April 27, 2018 #LordHathawaysNewBride #NetGalley
Sarah has problems, a father who has gambled his family into deep debt and a marriage that will fix that. A marriage she doesn't want because there was an understanding that she would marry another but he thinks Sarah is not good enough. Viscount Hathaway is approached by Sarah's father and he is agreeable to the marriage. Lord Hathaway had land and wealth, and now has "the one thing he’d recently discovered he desired beyond all else— his new wife" There may not be love but Sarah is prepared to do her wifely duties. Lord Hathaway shows Sarah passion that she didn't know existed. Her ex is prepared to become Sarah's lover since she is now rich and off the market. Will passion be enough? Will Sarah decide to take a lover? In this sexy part two of the series The Hathaway heirs, there is intrigue, passion and love. Will definitely read the rest of the series. I received this book from Net Galley and the publisher for an honest review.
Lord Hathaway's New Bride by Suzanna Medeiros is yet, another amazing story in her "Hathaway's Heirs,#2", but can read as a stand alone. This is the story of Sarah Mapleton and James, Viscount Hathaway and a marriage of convenience. A Novella. Steady paced, masterfully written with interesting and engaging characters. The plot is unpredictable, intriguing with misunderstandings, secrets, steamy passion, jealousy with a HEA.
A captivating story where James sets out to win Sarah’s heart but loses his own along the way. Ms. Medeiros writes captivating storylines with passion, and engaging characters and romance. Impressive story, which captured my heart, James and Sarah's story was a bit frustrating at times, but they finally come to terms with their feelings. Fans of Regency Romance, passionate kisses, marriage of convenience and greatplots will enjoy LORD HATHAWAY'S NEW BRIDE. I received a complimentary copy, however, all opinions are my own.
Lord Hathaway's New Bride is a great little novel. It does not start off in the typical romance novel way, by building up to the wedding, it starts right at the wedding! Sarah Mapleton finds herself compelled to marry James, Viscount Hathaway after her father has gambled away her dowry, and brought their family into incredible debt. Sarah has had her heart broke before, so vows not to let it happen again, but sometimes you just cant predict the feelings you will have for someone, no matter how hard you try.
I did really enjoy this book, it was filled with lots of passion, tenderness, love, even friendship. Sarah and James had many hurdles to jump before they could really come together, and it made you want to cheer for them and fight for them. Again great read, would definitely recommend it.
How... ahh, how does this book have an average of four stars?! It was 200 pages of a lot of repetitive nothing. There was so little interaction between the main characters and they for sure didn’t fall in love because they were never together except for night time sex which was mostly just talked about with a couple scenes thrown in (and those were disconnected and boring to boot).
The characters were so flat and just brooded over the same things the whole time. Both characters even thought to themselves that THEY NEVER SPEND ANY TIME TOGETHER, so how could they even get to know each other, much less fall in love? They can’t. They don’t. And they’re stupid and boring.
There was so little dialogue, so little action, and way too much description of irrelevant things. Like “did the previous viscount’s wife get to have any say in the gardening?” Whaaa?
A steamy story. A marriage of convenience where the bride had been dumped by a neighbour she’d expected to marry, but when her father’s debts came to light…. The Viscount she marries is newly ennobled, never expecting to inherit. She swears never to trust or lose her heart to another man, and he desires her but does not know how to express his feelings properly and jumps to a number of wrong conclusions, and the same goes for his wife. I quite liked the story. The Viscount was a bit of a pain. He wanted so effectively bought Sarah, and the did not put the effort in to explain his feelings, just decided she was obviously trying to cheat on him. And why Sarah did not tell him she had been previously been effectively promised to a neighbour defies me. So is it a 4 or 3 star? I think I will go with 3 but it was nearly 4 - if only there had been a little bit more depth to the characters.
